[newbie] questions: pppd/kppp; dbm and apache
Still no luck with kppp, but I have my /etc/ppp scripts working, so at least I'm not switching to win95 to get online any longer. However, I have to run the scripts as root, or else pppd tells me it does not have permission to open /dev/ttyS1. Changing permissions on ttyS1 doesn't seem to work -- it eliminates the error, but nothing happens. Any ideas on that one? It doesn't bother me too much to use root to dial in to my ISP, but I would like to keep the system pretty transparent for others who use my computer. And, one other question. I'm pretty new to apache -- do I need to recompile apache with venus to run dbm? I'm trying to run some dbm cgis, but having no luck, and I'm not familiar enough with apache to know if I need to rewrite my scripts or if I'm just not telling apache to enable dbm. (To be more specific, can I continue to use commands like "dbmopen" in my cgi files, or do I have to work with dbm files differently than I have in the past? If I can continue to work with dbms as I have been, do I need to reconfigure apache in some way?) I hope that second question makes some sense, because I'm feeling pretty inarticulate right now. Re: [newbie] Multiple questions...Personal menu....libforms...
Good day! I took a stab at your questions. I hope I can be of some help: - Original Message - From: (BXTC) [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Multiple questions...Personal menulibforms... First let me tell you that I have used Red Hat linux for about a year, so I am used to linux(although not KDE). My first question is how you get the "personal" menu to show upI have setup 2 machines right next to eachother, and I think I did everything the same, except one of the machines has a "personal" menu which lets me run a lot more apps. I know I have all of the same programs loaded on both machines, but can't run some of them on the machine w/o the "personal" menu. As you've probably read already, KAppFinder will hunt down some applications not in the K-menu for you. The menu it creates is called "Non-KDE Apps" (as of Mandrake 5.3, I haven't tried this in 6.0) This problem also means I can't run some programs such as Licq...In RH5.1 I could type "licq" in an nxterm and it would open it up, but this is not the case hereis this me, or mandrake, or KDE? I don't think licq is installed by default in Mandrake 5.3. You'll have to go out and download it (http://licq.wibble.net). In 6.0, I am not sure. Try 'rpm -q licq'. If it prints out something like licq-0.70.1 then licq should be installed. If licq is installed, and typing 'licq' at a command prompt does not run the program, you can search for it. On your K Menu there should be a "Find Files" entry. This will bring up a dialog similar to Windows' Find Files dialog. If you can find licq, then it's directory must not be in your path. You may want to move the executable to a directory that is in your path (like /usr/bin) or add that directory to your path- I think it's defined in /etc/profile. Also, several of the programs I try to install off the CDs (I have the powerpack) call for libs, such as libform.** I have not found these on the CDs. Am I just not looking in the right places, or what? You can use the "Find Files" to check the CD, too. They're probably in RPM format. And my last questionIn AfterStep I could make the "feel" of the desktop "windowish", which would let me "glide" from 1 desktop to another(or halfway inbetween)...is there any such feature in KDE? And if so how can I activate it? As far as I know, this feature does not exist in KDE. Thanks for any help, I hope I helped. You're welcome. (BXTC)

ok, now I'm screwed. I didn't update lilo, for my own experimental reasons. what I got was a pc that wouldn't boot - when lilo tried to boot the old kernel (which I presumed I still had) it would lock up immediately. So I booted from my backup boot floppy, no prob. I tried correcting the lilo.conf file to boot the new kernel (I found that most of the old kernel files were now gone from my /boot folder, although I had the impression they would still be there in case my new kernel wouldn't boot). when I rebooted I still got the same problem - locked up as soon as it said the word "linux" under the lilo prompt. So I booted from floppy again. Now I mounted the cd-rom and did the following - I removed the new (.27) kernel files by uninstalling them with rpm, and I reinstalled the old (.19) kernel files from the cd-rom. when I rebooted (after re-editing my lilo.conf file to boot the .19 kernel once again) I can now boot and run just fine, as you can see. That way, if you do have a problem with the new kernel, you can still boot with the old one. [newbie] error loading RAMdisk
Perhaps Bernhard can help me with this problem (or anyone else). I have had basically little problem installing Mandrake 5.3 or RedHat 6.0, but things go wrong with Mandrake 6.0 (Venus ) installation. I get through the basic questions about keyboard type and installing from harddisk up to the location of the Mandrake files. From there it says loading RAMdisk, then I get the message 'Error loading RAMdisk' and the installation halts. I have tried using the updated boot.img and even RedHat 6.0's boot.img to no avail. Does anyone know the reason for this error? Is there a way around it, or do I need to wait for another updated boot.img? Add the line 'alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi' to your conf.modules file. Sorry, but where are those .conf files? This one's easy - one file '/etc/conf.modules'. Edit as root. I'll add on to that by mentioning that most system-wide configuration files reside in the /etc directory. :) For future reference. (if you have another adapter - in my case an aha152x - add another line 'alias scsi_hostadapter1 aha152x' followed by any options lines). I have IDE HP CDWriter+ 7200 on my Mandrake box. So far it's working only as a cdrom. How I could set it up also as a cdwriter? Which adapter should I use? Not so easy (maybe) - the only experience of i HPSureStore's is with parallel port versions and i wouldn't know where to start with that (it may not even be possible yet under Linux - anybody know?). Which model do you have ? HP 7200 is on cdrecord's list of supported drives, and he said IDE, so it should work fine with the directions you gave for setting up SCSI emulation. -Tom
[newbie] installing 6.0
Help I've tried upgrading from mandrake 5.3, clean installing 6.0 and still can't get it to work. I got the cd from cheapbytes. Everything seems to install correctly, but when it re-boots I have nothing but problems. It goes thru boot until after the hard drive optimizations then I get the following errors. Creating /mnt/disk /bin/mkdir: /bin/mkdir: cannot execute binary file [FAILED] INIT: Entering runlevel: 3 INIT: cannot execute etc/rc.d/rc INIT: Id "1" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "2" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "3" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "4" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "5" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: Id "6" respawning to fast: disabled for 5 minutes INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel Then every five minutes it repeats the INIT respawning lines The only way to exit is to do a power down. Any ideas. Do I have a bad cd? Lyndon Lininger Sr.
Re: [newbie] download mess-want WP8 more than most things
Well, here's a secret... if you have shell access, use LYNX if you can ONLY get it via HTTP, or if you know the FTP address, download it to your shell account via FTP and then back down to your system. That solves two problems: 1) what else do you do while your system is (pretty much ) tied up downloading a HUGE file (after all, do you REALLY want to share your precious bandwidth with something OTHER than that download???) 2) how to make sure you get it ALL w/o getting kicked off. BTW, it would probably be best to telnet in after establishing a PPP connection, otherwise you're still stuck doing nothing while you're downloading the file. ;-) John - Original Message - From: Steve Winston [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 1999 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] download mess-want WP8 more than most things Hy, thanks for your reply. I've tried to install Mandrake 6 probably 15 times, ad I've been very fortunate if I even got it to boot. Maybe you could provide your hardware specifics? Hi guys, I hate to add a "me too" but I have to. I installed 6.0 (from the Cheapbytes CD) and thought all was well until I left the machine for a few hours and upon my return the box was locked up, a la Windows 9x. After a few aborted fscks 6.0 was running again only to suffer the same failure an hour later. I installed Venus from a CD I burned myself from the .iso file. I tried doing an upgrade over 5.3 but that wasn't much of a success. When I did a clean install I had no problems at all. In fact, some things are better. I've gotten my SB AWE64 Gold to work without having to use the OSS drivers that I had bought for version 5.3. Perhaps there is something amiss with those CDs? [newbie] kppp and accessing the internet, help
help!!! I finally have venus 6.0 to dial out to the internet and stay connected, the only problem that I have now is when I run netscape or lynx or any K desktop window it will NOT connect to any site!!! as If I am not connected, like the browser is not finding the internet, it is quite annoying, anybody had this problem and solved it please help!!! RE: [newbie] installing 6.0
I setup 6.0 from the Linux Mall CD's and it went Fine. I upgraded from 5.3 on my work computer and clean installed my home one. I think you should stick with the Linux Mall and get the CD's from there. That is where I get all of mine. I noticed that many people have had problems with LSL and CheapBytes CD's. I too bought a version of 5.3 from cheapbytes and Linux Mall to see. The Cheap Bytes one kept failing and the Linux Mall ones where fine. Goes to show you I guess. James J. Re: [newbie] download mess-want WP8 more than most things
If u find yourself having to download again after u have downloaded abt 99.9% adn the line gets cut off (we all know how it feels)..u can try using wget (if u know the url)...if i am not wrong wget comes with the stock red hat and thus mandrake..i hope they did not pull it out of venus/rh6...wget supports resuming so it will download from where u left off previously...(if the download site supports it)..
