[newbie] Deleting icons from kde desktop

Could someone please tell me how to get rid of some of the icons on the kde
desktop. I have tried deleting them from the desktop and from the desktop file
in /home/user/desktop but when I logoff then logon again all the icons
reappear. I have deleted icons as root and they have not returned to that
desktop. Am I missing something?

Thanks

[newbie] firewall rules

1999-12-07 Thread Bjorn Fahller

Gotta be a FAQ but I can't find it.

I've wondered where firewall rules should be stored, but just found the
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall file, which has some sample rules (fairly decent
for a start too.)

The problem is that this file isn't referred to from anywhere in my
installation. I could edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/network to source the file,
but it doesn't seem like a good idea, since I'd lose the change the
moment I upgrade the system. Where's a better place?

Re: [newbie] Getting rid of the penuin on bootup

1999-12-07 Thread Matt Stegman

Commenting it out just stops rc.local from overwriting it at boot time.
The penguin is still in there. Try

echo -n /etc/issue

This will clear out /etc/issue. Next time you logout, you should get only
a login prompt. Then, when you reboot next, you'll not get the penguin.

I don't think this is the solution you're looking for, though. Before
showing the login prompt, something (mingetty?) clears the screen. This
will wipe out the last of the boot messages in any case, whether or not
the penguin is displayed.

Re: [newbie] Installing Downloaded Files

1999-12-07 Thread Thomas J. Hamman

On Mon, 6 Dec 1999, Jonathan Jackson wrote:

This probably sounds a little weird, but I'm just starting Linux...

Not weird at all.

Q: How do I install files I downloaded??

Well, if you install an rpm program then you can install it by typing at
the command line:

rpm -ivh filename

For example:

rpm -ivh xmms-0.9.1-6mdk.i586.rpm

(That's the xmms package on the Mandrake 6.1 CD.)

Another way you can install RPM's is to run kpackage and GnoRPM, and then
you have a user-friendly graphical environment to install and uninstall
rpm packages in.

Now, if you download source code in the form of a tar.gz file, things get
a little more complicated. (A tar.gz extension on a file means that the
files were archived (i.e. many files put into one file) with tar and then
compressed with gzip. It's used as often in Linux as zip is in Windows.)

First, uncompress and unarchive a tar.gz file, you would type this:

tar zxvf filename

For example:

tar xzvf xfce-3.2.1.tar.gz

That would extract my copy of XFce.

Usually what's going to happen when you extract something in that manner,
is it will create its own directory under the directory you're in and
extract all your files there. (You can use tar tzvf instead of tar xzvf
to see a list of the files and where they go.) I would strongly suggest
picking one directory specifically for extracting programs from, so you
keep your source code organized under one directory. Personally, I like
using /usr/local/src for that purpose.

Now, once you've extracted the files with tar xzvf, switch to the
directory that was created. Assuming you have the source code of a
program, you probably also have either a text file called INSTALL, a text
file called README, or both. READ THOSE. One or both of those files will
contain information about the program you just extracted, and the commands
you need to use to compile and install the program.

You'll USUALLY have to use these three commands:

./configure
make
make install

And the make install will have to be run as root. (You'll have to be root
if you untar the file in /usr/local/src, too.) Definitely read the README
and/or INSTALL though as sometimes there are variations on the commands
you use.

If you found the stuff concerning tar.gz files confusing (it's not as
complex as it looks from this E-mail--I'm just very wordy!!), then try to
stick with only downloading programs that come in RPM form until you get a
little more comfortable with Linux. I strongly suggest making a point of
becoming comfortable enough to handle untarring and compiling source code,
though. It's like most things in life in that it's scary the first couple
times you try it but then it's easy afterward. :)

Re: [newbie] Installing Downloaded Files

1999-12-07 Thread Matt Stegman

First, you'll need to be sure you downloaded everything under the
/Mandrake directory. This, and the right boot image, is all you need to
install Mandrake Linux. You can get a boot image from the /images
subdirectory. Be sure to take a look at the README file; it explains how
to use the boot images, and which one is right for you.

Once you've created a boot disk from the appropriate image, you can boot
from this, and it will step you through the installation. Be sure you
have some unpartitioned space on your drive.

I tried connecting with pppsetup from Linuxberg.com. After answering all
that correctly, and editing the resolv.conf to have the proper DNS
numbers, and editing /etc/ppp/options to remove the usepeerdns line, it
still wouldn't connect.
I do have ELN/name in properly also.
It dials up properly, the modems handshake- then silence. No message
that I connect- my modem just drops carrier after about 10 seconds.
Almost like a DNS problem, but not.

SO! I try kppp!
I put all the information as I have seen in message to a couple
different people and let 'er rip. kppp dials, handshakes and it even
says Connecting to Network. Then the little connect window minimizes
itself on the desktop. Bingo. I think I have a connection... but now no

I was confused... then I hear my modem disconnect in the background, and
mysteriously my programs will open now. WHAT AM I DOING???

myself, I (as well as many others) have downloaded many new/different
programs, most in RPM but quite a few in tar.gz. In most cases the tar.gz's
that I download mostly DO NOT seem to compile to a working program. I use the
built in KDE archiver to extract the src's to their own DIR and then read the
INSTALL/README's for the method of complie. I use the suggested method and
voila...NO installed program :( I get assorted ERROR msg's (none that come
readily to mind). Is it just me, my system, or the tarball that is at
fault???
TIA

If you found the stuff concerning tar.gz files confusing (it's not as
complex as it looks from this E-mail--I'm just very wordy!!), then try to
stick with only downloading programs that come in RPM form until you get a
little more comfortable with Linux. I strongly suggest making a point of
becoming comfortable enough to handle untarring and compiling source code,
though. It's like most things in life in that it's scary the first couple
times you try it but then it's easy afterward. :)

Re: [newbie] Netscape -- 128 Encryption

1999-12-07 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Audrey:

Netscape has 56 bit (normal) encryption and 128 (strong) encryption
versions available from their site.

HOWEVER, I recommend you skip Netscape's 128 encryption, get the normal
56 bit encryption version (which is probably what you already have) and
fortify it to 128 encryption with a free product called, appropriately
enough, Fortify. It will give you 128 encryption EVERYWHERE on Net, even
at sites that do not support 128 encryption. Netscape's 128 encryption
will only work at sites that DO support 128 encryption, which, at this
point, is limited in number.

For full info, go to:

http://www.fortify.net

(notice the ".net" extension)

Be sure to read their README file THOROUGHLY. Everything is explained
there, and it includes ways to test your browser, etc. And it's all free
for non-commercial use.

Then select "linux" from the middle of the page that pops

I know they are publishing the secure server edition of 6.1

Well, the saga continues.

Bingo. I think I have a connection... but now no
program will load, whether invoked by desktop icon or through the KMenu.
I was confused... then I hear my modem disconnect in the background, and
mysteriously my programs will open now. WHAT AM I DOING???

Re: [newbie] Installing Downloaded Files

1999-12-07 Thread M Thompson

It's not a weird question. Once you install the OS, you typically want to
install additional applications. I would probably think you were weird if
you were completely content with your OS and it's applications as it comes
"right off the shelf."

To answer your question, check out:
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/basics/index.html

It explains how to install applications that are packaged in either RPM or
tarball formats. An RPM file is vaguely similar to a Windows
self-extracting installation file. A tarball is vaguely similar to a DOS
zip file. An RPM is packaged to work with a particular Linux distribution.
All Redhat RPM files will also work on Linux Mandrake.

You should probably do more than 'glance' at the how-to files for Samba.
Most *nix apps require more effort than that. Having said that, there is
a great book out called 'Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours'. I Have it and
its a good read. Samba comes with several quite detailed sample smb.conf
files as well; they should be a big help if you don't want to buy the

You've got funny mailheaders that pine dislikes just so you know.

If you get sound as root(during sndconfig) but not as user(playing audio
in kde), the most likely cause is the user is not in the audio group.
Now you maybe tempted to chmod the audiodevices, _don't_ add the user to
the audio group, for two reasons 1 pam will just change it back 2 you open
your self to a really ugly D.O.S.

1. Turn off html. I found the red text to be difficult to read. Thank you :-)

2. Using Samba to access NT shares is pretty easy.
1. Go into /usr/bin or wherever you samba binaries, su to root and do
a chmod +s on smbmount, smbmnt, and smbumount
2. Then just do this: smbmount //server-name/share-name /mountpoint
-I put the ip address of your server here then enter your
password when it prompts you to. To unmount just do a smbumnt
  /mountpoint.

The easiest thing to do is to write a couple of small shell scripts to do the
mounting and unmounting for you. I think you can even put in the password
automatically as smbmount has a -P option as I recall.

As far as making Linux shares avaliable to NT, I don't know how to do that,
never had much desire.

Oh, also make sure that you have tcp/ip bound to the netbios stuff in NT,
otherwise Linux won't be able to use the shares.
