Once you've go Go!Zilla installed, you can just download the iso image.

well, I didn`t know this and now I have downloaded /Mandrake and /images
directories !!

I do NOT intend to download also the iso image (620MB) now, because I
already have been online quite a long time! :-))

So, does it work just downloading the directories /Mandrake and /images and
then install it?

thanks,

worked with the hard drives the previous version wouldn't touch (36.5 gig

I am trying to install a program using a ./configure script and I am getting the
following error.

configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create

Is this a problem with my compiler? Which is a version GCC that I downloaded from the
Mandrake 7.0 distribution.

Is it a problem with the ./configure script or the package I downloaded?

Also I am using Mandrake 6.1 so is it possibly an incompatibility between my version
and the GCC I have installed?

I have tried reinstalling the GCC. I have added the dependencies GCC-CPP and GCC-C++.

One problem I did have to begin with was that all the standard libraries could not be
found. Libraries such stdio.h and the like. I found them in the GLIBC library
directory so I copied them all to the /usr/library directory which seemed to fix that
problem.

The package by the way is KMPLOT from the KDE scientific applications directory.

Sorry for the essay.

[newbie] Hello- Installation Question

2000-01-19 Thread Mike Lee

Hi there.

Last night I tried to install Mandrake on a clean hard drive, 13 gigs, I
got to select packages, after selecting the packages I wanted to install, I
continued the installation process.

It seemed to be loading the packages fine, but it was taking forever so I
left it to finish the installation of the packages and I figured when I got
up this morning I could finish the installation by configuring the rest of
L-M.

Well, when I got up the machine had frozen, it seems, in the middle of the
package installation. It asked for me to press any button to continue, I
did,and it rebooted and began the installation process from the beginning
again

Has this happened to anyone else? And, if so, what did you do to correctly
install it?

Thanks!

Subject: [newbie] two problems
Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 01:09:00 GMT

Hi all

I have just installed mandrake Linux 6.5

First and hardest: Is that Disk Druid has trashed my partition tables (my
machine also runs mainly OS/2 warp 4) such that I am unable to run either
Partition Magic 3.05 or fdisk from OS/2 although my disks are booting
normally I
am unable to modify my partitions or my Bootmanager (which looks a bit of a
mess)

Second: I have 3 IDE buses and 2 Soundblaster soundcards so far I have been
completely unable to sort out my isapnp.confg
Soundcard 1:
Soundblaster AWE32pnp also uses gameport and IDE_2 (numbered 0-2) for
auxiliary CD ROM (I don't mind if this has to be disabled)
on OS/2 this runs
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SBAWED2.SYS /C:1 /D:3 /H:5 /I:7 /A:240 /B:24 /M:330
/N:SBAUD1$
/P /G /Q

which means:-
Card: 1
Lo DMA: 3
Hi DMA: 5
IRQ: 7
I/O address: 240
MIDI I/O: 330

Again it would be nice to use the card as it is good but if I have to
disable
it, it would be tolerable it is plug-n-pray therefor the parameters my be
changed providing no conflicts arise.

Soundcard 2:
Soundblaster 2 an old 8 bit card set up as standard for DOS games and
is set
the proper way (with jumpers :-))
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SBD2.SYS 2 5 220 8 /N:SBAUD2$ /Q

which means:-
Card: 2
DMA: 1 (only available)
IRQ: 5
I/O address 220
The Game port is disabled

If someone can point me to the correct documentation or a good pnp set-up
utility I think an acceptable solution should be found.

Thank You.

Bernice :-)

I haven't yet tried bastille (the hardening scripts for RH 6.0),
but I would presume that they are effective. SuSE 6.3 includes
several kernel modules, cron scripts, etc. aimed at tightening
up security and preventing certain attacks. In addition, harden_suse
is a (perl?) script that asks you 9 or 10 questions that will allow you
to selectively lock down your box. Luckily it provides a log file and
an uninstall script so you can 'undo' this if you got too much security
(i.e. not enough usability). Obviously, once you are satisfied w/ your
security in this case, you would remove (i.e. archive on a floppy) the
logs and uninstall script so as to prevent any tampering, though you
have to be root to run them anyway.

I sat down and installed Linux-Mandrake 7.0 (Air) last night, and I was
fairly impressed w/ the security provisions, at least at first glance.
If you do the customized install, you get three security options, i.e.
low, medium, and high. High is recommended if you want to use the box
for a server. If you do the expert install, you now have 5 choices,
ranging from Level 0 (annotated as 'Hello Hackers!' ;) ) to Level 5
(Paranoid). Switching back and forth btwn the main install screen and
the syslog screen, I noted a blurb that in level 5, root needed to add
specific users to a group ( the exact name escapes me at the moment) so
they could even use X. Cool! I took a brief i.e. 5 min tour thru the
install and user guide, and there is a section on security, titled
MSEC, or something to that effect. In level 5, I believe pretty much
everything is closed and the administrator must deliberately open
specific ports. Shades of OpenBSD! (Actually, Turbolinux 3.6 was
somewhat similar, just not this extreme, in this aspect). Next big
suprise was that once you configure your network, you have the option
to download and install crypto software, including openssh, openssl,
pgp, gnupg, pgpgpg, lynx-ssl, mutt-i, and some (i believe) apache
modules. Again, shades of OpenBSD! Sorta like downloading the
sslUSA26.tar.gz package during install in OpenBSD. Also, to add the
icing to the cake, you can install a hardened kernel w/ several of the
known security patches already installed during the initial install.
Yahoo! Now before the *bsd fans get out their flamethrowers for my
comparing Mandrake to OpenBSD, let me just say that I do not believe
for a minute that _any_ linux distro has the benefit of the close
attention to detailed security that OpenBSD has benefited from.
Linuxes have always focused more on new features and usability. But if
Linux-Mandrake 7.0 is a sign of things to come, that may change in the
(relatively) near future.

Monte

Please do, I'm interested to know what others say about it.

This does sound like the problem that occured with the version of Mandrake 6.1
that was on the front of PC Answers in the UK. This does, however, go back to
seven weeks ago. I, for one, am still awaiting the replacement CD from PC

install the package. So when I tried to correct the
error by checking for the package in the CD (as ppl in

CDRom (see below), so I had to reinstalled the whole
thing.

Now, my problem is (I could swear I saw this problem a
few days ago, asked by someone else, but I must have
deleted it :( ), everytime I try to mount my cd rom,
this error comes out:

mount /mnt/cdrom
hdd: driver not present
hdd: driver not present
mount: /dev/dcrom is not a valid block device

Could anyone help me with this?

Also, everytime init starts, a message to the effect
of :supermount, not supported by kernel, appears.
Would someone explain this to me?

Thanks.

[newbie] mdk 7.0 install problems

2000-01-19 Thread Anders Mårtensson

Yo

I'm trying to install 7.0 but after the ramdisk is loaded the system
reboots. I've tried harddisk installation, cdrom installation, expert mode and
finally text mode. None of them works. I've tried making a boot disk as well but
that didn't help either.
I've tried fiddling with the config files as well on the boot disk. At
first I tried setting ramdisk=0 but that didn't work. Then I erased the whole
ramdisk bit and then the installation went better. That time I could see the
cross and all, but then it rebooted again.
I've got mdk 6.1 installed already and that works fine. I had no problems
installing it what so ever.

Am I the only one with this problem?

[newbie] Will my CPU work?

2000-01-19 Thread John Bilecky

Hi,

I was thinking of buying Mandrake to use on an older PC, but
was wondering if it will work with its CPU. I had read that
Linux can work well with older CPU's. Mine is an AMD 586,

past problems that it does not read Pentium instructions.

Will Mandrake 7.0 or 6.1 work with it?

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 -- Disk Druid Hang-Up

2000-01-19 Thread Valued Customer

Disk Druid won't let me install a swap partition (of any size), for no
reason that I can figure out.

When I try to "Add" the swap partition, I get an error: not enough room on
the partition (63 ??). I am installing the swap partitian on a 2nd hard
disk (1 GIG; slave) - hdb1 - that has WIN98 on it currently. (I intend to
wipe out '98.)

Oddly, Disk Druid allows me to install the root partition no problem.

I don't want to use the Mandrake included fdisk utility because the hard
disk in question is not the master, and the install notes warns against this
explicitly.

Maybe the o/s managing program (phytechsoft multiple o/s manager) I have
installed that is screwing up Disk Druid - but I doubt it.

Any suggestions?

the bottom of the kwvdial window it says I am connected. I know I am

Again it would be nice to use the card as it is good but if I have to disable
it, it would be tolerable it is plug-n-pray therefor the parameters my be
 changed providing no conflicts arise.

 Soundcard 2:
Soundblaster 2 an old 8 bit card set up as standard for DOS games and is set
the proper way (with jumpers :-))
 DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SBD2.SYS 2 5 220 8 /N:SBAUD2$ /Q

 which means:-
 Card: 2
 DMA: 1 (only available)
 IRQ: 5
 I/O address 220
 The Game port is disabled

Did you try sndconfig for either of these cards and manually set them up
in there?

If someone can point me to the correct documentation or a good pnp set-up
utility I think an acceptable solution should be found.

 Thank You.

I had downloaded the directories /Mandrake and /images and /dosutils
and created a boot disk. Everything SEEMED fine and it started the
installation (graphical, very nice...) :-)

At about the sixth or seventh point it told me that it couldn`t install all
packages. It continued though. Then, there was another error message, but
still continued. However, I ended up that there was STILL Mandrake 6.1 and
not 7.0 installed.

I *guess* that the problem is that I downloaded the directories with
Go!Zilla and it did NOT create any symlinks. Could that be?

I am now about to download the iso file but this will take me another
day... or so.. :-)

which program is best to burn? Easy CD Creator or Nero Burning?

I just can download the iso file and burn it on cd, right?! That´s it... ok.

Re: [newbie] install 7.0 problems

2000-01-19 Thread Bobby Welch

I downloaded the iso and used Nero to burn the image onto a CD. The
install went without a hitch .. even got my usb mouse working =)
If you do use nero to burn the CD, you must note that Nero (version 4.0.7.5)
is unable to open a *.iso file and properly recognize it(or at least I could
not find out how to do it ... still a newbie at all this). So, what I did
was rename the file with a .nrg extension (extension that nero seems to use
for a CD-image), opened the file up with Nero, and burned the imagethis
worked for me.

Subject: [newbie] install 7.0 problems

I had downloaded the directories /Mandrake and /images and /dosutils
and created a boot disk. Everything SEEMED fine and it started the
 installation (graphical, very nice...) :-)

At about the sixth or seventh point it told me that it couldn`t install
all

That´s it...
ok.

 thanks,

 marc

[newbie] 7.0 Setup

2000-01-19 Thread Karl Anderson

I am kind of new to Linux and just installed 7.0. I have gotten my cable
modem to work but now every time I boot it states that http: fails and I
need to run servername manually. What do I need to do to correct this?

Also how do I setup up my zip drive (parallel) to work with Linux.

Also need ssh to login remotely to work, where can I obtain this?

Thanks,
Karl

[newbie] FONT Q: blocky text in Netscape?

2000-01-19 Thread Derek Sivers

Not new to Linux, but new to Mandrake.
Installed 6.3 and I remember hearing it came with some
truetype fonts built in or something.

But when I opened Netscape, and went to some websites
I had designed, some text was big and blocky like a
Xerox logo or something.

(You know - where the letter A looks like it's just 8
big Lego pixels.)

Any clue what it might be? I know the website was
looking for the fonts in this order: Verdana,
Trebuchet, Arial, Helvetia, sans-serif.

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks...

[newbie] mandrake 7 installation

2000-01-19 Thread Alexandre Fedorinchik

I hope this is the right place to send this...

I tried installing the new Mandrake 7 but I ran into some issues:
The first time I installed it I selected the Rage Fury card and
ViewSonic G773 monitor which I have but it couldn't accomplish the
test. And it booted with failures concerning mounting as well.
The next times the installation aborts when I come close to finishing
copying files and simply says that it is safe to reboot.

What would you suggest I do?

-thanks

P.S. I tried installing Redhat 6.1 and it worked but I couldn't get X
started because I didn't have drivers for my Rage Fury card(it said it
couldn't find displays for it).

Re: [newbie] Modem Problems

2000-01-19 Thread Chris Reeder

After reinstalling 6.1 the other day, I had the same problem-- modem busy. .
Cause: I had forgotten to add
#setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0x6200 irq 11
as directed in my modem's user manual (Actiontec 56k PCI call waiting modem)
to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local
file. I don't know what the numbers mean except the irq, but they might be
different for you.

On Tue, 18 Jan 2000, you wrote: I did
everything you guys said, now I have "modem busy" with Kppp. When I do a

I cat /etc/mandrake-release I get "Linux Mandrake release 6.1 (Helios)"

I have a Gateway pentium III 450 and windows98 and Linux
 and 64MB of RAM.
and I changed the config.sys so to boot either

This seams to be a greate fault. I've had the same problems with my laptop.
Some people told me that it is a good idea to burn a new mandrake cd
without the mouseconfig-package. Then you can install mousesupport after
the basic-installation. Unfortunately my installations hangs at the next
point; the automatic graphiccard-installation. :-(( Perhaps you are more
successfull.

Go to rpmfind.net for the rpm for ssh rpm or www.ssh.fi for the ssh homepage
and download the source code tarball. As for the cablemodem did you name
machine what the cable company told you to?

[newbie] Multi-session CD

2000-01-19 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello list,
I am asking this question on behalf of another member of our LUG who is
not connected at present, so please bear with me if I don't get the
wording exactly right. He wants to know how to mount/read a
multi-session cd, which he has burnt in Windows, in L-M6.1 using KFM.
He has tried to mount the cd but is unable to see it in linux, whereas
he can in Windows.
TIA.

Re: [newbie] problems with gcc commands

2000-01-19 Thread Derrick Judge

Make sure that you have the gcc compiler installed, and make sure it is in a
directory that is in you PATH.

If all else fails use this command, it might take a while depending on the
speed of your computer but if it exists it will find it:

find / -name gcc

I have an HP 693C, and the 600 range is listed as supported under
PrintTools; When I test it from PrintTools it only works from the option
to print directly to the port, the other two only result in a message that
it's printing to the print spool. When I try to print from Netscape or
another application, it says something about access denied. Thanks!
