setiathome-2.0.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar is the one that you want. Don't
download any of the 1.xx versions as they will be unable to work with any of the

Hello Benjamin,
If you really have absolutely no need to ever print in color, AND want a
quiet printer, why not consider an inexpensive Laser printer. HP has a couple
that can be had inexpensively. They're usually quiet, fast, and in the long
run LESS expensive because you get much more use from the cartridges. (at
least that's been my experience). They usually work well as postscript
printers too. Why not check prices at CNET or some place like that, and, of
course, check the linux compatability sites before plunking down your cash.
Just my $.02

[newbie] How to mount floppy or CDR on Laptop ??

2000-01-22 Thread nilo

I just installed Mandrake 7.0 on my laptop where I can have either a floppy
drive or a CD-ROM drive. The install went on OK (it was an update from 6.1)
but I discovered the following problem: apparently both the CD-ROM and the
floppy are "automounted" in the fstab file: this creates no problem when
logging in but freeze the system when loggin out (apparently it tries to
umount a device which is not mounted e.g. the floppy when the CD-Rom is
inserted). I must then switch the power of and I have to through a full scan
at the next log sequence.

Any idea on how to fix this problem ??? Could the log procedure auto-detect
the mounted device ? Is it possible to swap the drive without login out ?

Thanks for your help

If its a raid thing, you may not be able to turn it off without going to a

Well, first off, try looking up information on the telnet daemon, i.e.
'telnetd'. This allows you to be a telnet 'server', and allow telneting
into your box from outside. Try 'man telnet' for the client side, or

[newbie] A couple suggestions for the DrakX installer

2000-01-22 Thread Thomas J. Hamman

I like the new installation, it's nice and easy (not that the text-based
installation was difficult), but I have a bit of a problem with choosing
packages in Expert mode.

A lot of times when I click on a + symbol to expand a category of packages, the
expanded stuff isn't visible. I have to scroll down until it's off screen,
then back up, to make it visible. Very annoying as I have to do this dozens of
times by the time I'm done with all the categories.

Of course, my real problem is that I never actually can get done with all the
categories. After expanding/collapsing categories and choosing packages for 15
minutes, and not even being a third of the way through, I gave up and went back
to use Custom instead of Expert. Choosing packages in that format just takes
WAY too long. Also on a couple of occasions, after finishing choosing all the
packages I wanted in all of the subcategories of a large category, I
accidentally clicked on the name of the category instead of the symbol to
collapse it. This caused ALL packages in the category to be chosen, so I had
to go through and pick the packages I wanted in that category all over again.
VERY frustrating.

Could we have an optional package listing that just shows all of the packages
in alphabetical order, instead of categorized? That way you just have one list
to go through, and no categories to expand/collapse. It would be much faster,
especially to those who already know what they want.

In addition, it would be really nice if we could put a list of all the packages
we want into a text file, put the text file on the boot disk (is there room for
that?) or somewhere else where it could be read during install, and have the
installer optionally use that file to automatically select/deselect packages
depending on what's present in the file.

That would be especially useful if you already have the selection of packages
you want installed, and you want to reinstall for some reason (or do the same
install on another computer). You could just do an rpm -qa packagelist or
whatever to get the list of packages for the installer.

[newbie] A couple problems in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Thomas J. Hamman

Okay, I'm having a couple odd minor problems with Pine, and a bigger problem
with procmail and/or postfix.

When running Pine in a terminal, I cannot highlight text with the mouse. I
have this problem no matter which term I use (xterm, rxvt, konsole, etc.).
This is a problem since sometimes I need to copy text from an E-mail and paste
it in a different program.

Also for some reason the text color in Pine isn't consistent. I run my xterms
with a black background and gray text (I like it to look as much like the
console as possible), but when I run Pine in xterm it switches to bright white
text, and in rxvt it uses an ugly yellow-grayish color that I can't describe
very well.

More importantly, my procmail filters aren't working. All my mail just
disappears (good thing I tested with fetchmail -k first!). :( This is odd
because I actually got two different results in two different installs:

In the first install, I chose (using Custom option) an install size of 850MB.
Several typical packages weren't install--it didn't install Pine, fetchmail, or
either MTA. That was fine, I installed Pine, fetchmail, and postfix on my own.
I WAS able to receive mail, and it filtered fine. (I also kept my home
directory from M6.1, BTW.) However, I could not SEND mail with postfix for
some reason.

In the second install, I chose a much larger install size, and I also first
renamed my home directory so I could start over with a fresh one and move over
old config files to the new one as needed (I like to do this sometime to purge
my home dir of config files for programs I don't use and make sure I'm
receiving any new changes to standard config files like .bashrc etc.)

I noticed postfix was installed instead of sendmail, which surprised me a bit
but was fine with me since it kept me from having to switch. I can also send
mail with postfix now.

...But now my procmail filters aren't working and my mail just gets trashed if
I dare trying to receive it with fetchmail. I have fetchmail, postfix, and
procmail installed, I moved over my .procmailrc to my new home directory and
made sure it was set world-readable. What could I be missing?

Any help would be appreciated, I can't stand kmail anymore. :)

Tom

In my system I have an older 12x CDROM drive which mounts fine with the

[newbie] 7.0 howto's?

2000-01-22 Thread Monte Milanuk

Does anyone care to enlighten me where the HOWTO's in Mandrake 7.0 are
hidden? So far I haven't even been able to find them on the CD that I
burned from an *.iso file.

Thanks for your time

Re: [newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (read only!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Richard Yevchak

I had a similar problem. First make sure you can mount the CD-RW manually. I
think the installer is smart enough to determine the drive is CD-RW, so it
sets up the SCSI emulation for you. It just doesn't change fstab to reflect
this. Try (assuming you want to mount it on /mnt/cdrom2):

mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2

You may have unmount /mnt/cdrom2 first. If this works, change the following
line (again assuming fstab is trying to mount your CD-RW on
/mnt/cdrom2/):

mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2 0 0

to:

/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0 0 0

You are changing the "dev=" portion to point at "/dev/scd0".

Hope this helps.

What line would I edit?

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.9-19mdk

Also, Seung-woo Nam ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) told me to run "sbin/lilo" after I
edit the "lilo.conf" file. What does running the "sbin/lilo" file do? Many
thanks to Seung-woo, and John.

it would be in your /etc directory and it would be called lilo.conf, If
you are
just wanting to change the default OS there should be a line called
default=linux or something like that, just change it to one of your
available
entries. Any text editor will do, vi, gedit, gxedit, text editor, emacs,
any.

[newbie] Sorry, here is another MODEM question.

2000-01-22 Thread Hitoshi Onda

Hi,

I installed Mandrake 6.1 about 2 weeks ago. Now,
almost everything is working fine except internet
access. From my reading of this mailing list, I
suspect my internal modem (PCI) won't work under
Linux. But, before go for shopping alternative (ISO)
modem, I would like to double check with people if
my PCI modem is indeed hardware based and can work
under Linux. A faint chance!? Anyway, here's a bit
of info.

My computer is Compaq Presario 5838 (AMD/Athlon500MHz)
with Conexant HCF V90 56K Data Fax PCI internal modem.

On Windows, it is said to connected to Port COM1 at
address and set to use FIFO buffers (requires 16550
compatible UART) and RTS/CTS flow control by hardware.

Now, on Linux, I set modem device to /dev/ttyS0.
The 'setserial -G /dev/ttyS0' command prints out
"/dev/ttyS0 uart 16550A port 0x03f8 irq 4 spd_normal
skip_test".

With this settings, kppp does not work after the
status
changes from "modem ready" to "initializing modem...".
This is ehrn I turn off flow control settings. If I
select CRTSCTS, then the kppp connect attempt
returs "modem does not respond" immediately.
(In either cases, even if I set the modem volume to
maximum, I do not hear any dialing noise.)

I wonder if I miss any other set ups. Or, simply
HCF V90 56k DataFax PCI modem is not usable on Linux.

I appreciate any input/help.
Hitoshi

Wondering if any one might offer a suggestion has to how I can get linux
to
work on my machine. Just had a relatively easy install using Mandrake 6.5,
but my computer hangs about a minute after booting. I get the KDE or GNOME
or XFREE to boot, and as I begin to look around, freeze. Every time. Only
thing that doesn't crash is selecting the Failsafe option when loggin in.
But the GUI's would be preferable.

 Anyway, thanks in advance!

Re: [newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (readonly!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Tom Barraza

Thanks Richard, I seem to have solved my problem a little while ago,
and here's how I did it:

1) I edited the /etc/conf.modules file and took out the 2 lines
   dealing with SCSI emulation:

alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
...
post-install supermount modprobe scsi_hostadapter
...

2) I then edited my /etc/lilo.conf file and took out the line that
  also dealt with SCSI emulation:

 ...
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda11
append="hdc=ide-scsi"-- Took this line out!
read-only

3) I ran lilo -v (as root) to update the boot record
4) When I rebooted, some auto-hardware detection program complained
about me disabling the Yamaha CR4416E, so I chose to have it keep
the existing configuration, but not warn me in the future about it
being disabled (or something to that effect!)

Now I am able to mount either of my CDROM drives at will from the KDE
Desktop!

What still bothers me, however, is that I am now getting those pesky
messages that I got in RedHAt 6.1 in the /var/log/messages file:

Anybody got any clues on what's going on wrong here? Is this drive still too new
for Linux drivers to have caught up?

Thanks,

I just installed 7.0 and I have two problems, the first one is that 7.0 found
my HP 7200i plus cd r-w drive and put it on the desktop as cdrom 2 but when I
try to access this drive it tells me " mount: /dev/cdrom2 is not a valid block
device" and I cannot use this device at all in linux, but, if I run XCDroast it
will "see" the HP 7200i plus and try to set it up?? unusual

also 7.0 did not "see" my atapi internal zip drive, there are no entries in
fstab for it or anything, I would love to be able to burn cd's and use my zip
drive, any help would be appreciated

Re: [newbie] Edit LILO Boot Order-More Help

2000-01-22 Thread Tom Barraza

Rick, usually, there is a line that states "default=linux"
(to boot Linux by default with LILO), but it isn't necessary. Read
the man page on lilo lilo.conf for more details ...

In short, LILO will use the first image in the list as the default
if it is not specified with the "default=OS" statement.

YES, you do want to run /sbin/lilo -v (verbose switch) after making
changes to the /etc/lilo.conf file!!! This is the step that actually
makes the changes you're making in /etc/lilo.conf update the boot
record on your hard-drive. I would recommend making a backup first,
of course!

Good luck,
Tom

it would be in your /etc directory and it would be called lilo.conf, If
 you are
just wanting to change the default OS there should be a line called
default=linux or something like that, just change it to one of your
 available
entries. Any text editor will do, vi, gedit, gxedit, text editor, emacs,
 any.

I would recommend making a backup first,
 of course!

Uhh, I meant a backup of the /etc/lilo.conf file, that is!

 Good luck,
 Tom

Well, I don't have the line in my 'lilo.conf' either. Unless you want to
change your default OS to Win95 or something else you don't need the
line.

Also, Seung-woo Nam ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) told me to run "sbin/lilo" after I

I guess it just verifies your 'lilo.conf' file so that next time you
boot the system, lilo would work correctly. If you get error messages
when you run '/sbin/lilo', you have to correct the errors.

Re: [newbie] Sorry, here is another MODEM question.

2000-01-22 Thread Jon Schwartze

I had pretty close to the same problem with my modem. I found out that
there was a Hardware conflict between my Modem and Soundcard (both PCI).
They both had the same ICQ. So I deleted Linux...and reinstalled. So
this time, I didnt configure my Soundcard, so now, my modem works
beautifully :)

 Hi,

suspect my internal modem (PCI) won't work under

I had used tar to archive some files on a floppy. I hadn't known that I didn't

does that automatically.

HCF indicates a software modem, I believe. This relies on the OS (winxx) to
perform some of the functions usually carried out by real hardware. If I'm
correct about this, it will NOT work w/Linux. Why not go for an external
modem? (e.g., USR faxmodem 56k V.90 or a Courier V.90)

[newbie] Same Old Telnet/FTP Problem With 7.0??

2000-01-22 Thread Bryan Moorehead

Just finished a clean install of 7.0. Got squid, ipchains etc,
working. I seem to have hit the old telnet/ftp brick wall again. Does
the Server installation NOT install telnet/ftp as in 6.1? Do I need to
download and install?
I have inetd, httpd running at bootup, so I would think this would start
telnet/ftp if it were on the system..

Any ideas? Do you need more info?

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: [[newbie] Sorry, here is another MODEM question.]

2000-01-22 Thread Joe Bruchis

If it's a PCI, it doesn't matter. What matters is if it's a "Winmodem". These are
usually
very small short cards that rely on software to carryout the responsibilities of
hardware on
normal modems. If it is a winmodem it absolutely will not work, and the linux open
source
developers say they promise it will never work in Linux. Your best bet if you go
shopping is
an external modem, as it uses standard com ports and IRQ's. 99.9% of them work with
Linux
and are inexpensive.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that will take a bin/cue
file combination and turn it into an iso like BinChunker does for windows?

If so, I'd appreciate the link, or even a few good search terms.

Thanks!
