Try 'ps ax|grep httpd' to see if apache is already running. If it is,
point your browser at http://localhost.

Many places will host your sites. Network Solutions and others
maintain the registry of the domain names.

Emilio library problem or a video problem. Can somebody help me?

Are you running X in 24 bpp?

Try (while X is running), this:

alt-F2. (You ought to get to a login prompt.)

login (with your username and password, same as usual)

at the $ prompt, type

'startx -- :1 -bpp 16' (no quotes) or

'startx -- :1 -bpp 32' (no quotes)

try to run WordPerfect. Do the images and other parts of the display
still appear odd?

If when running under 16 or 32 bpp they appear ok, you need to switch
to one of those modes. Use XF86Setup or Xconfigurator as root, from a
prompt, without X running, to change the mode to 16bpp (or 32).

The 'startx -- :1 -bpp 16' or 'startx -- :1 -bpp 32' commands start a
second X server on your same machine. You are able to switch between
the 2 or 3 or however many X server by doing

ctrl-alt-F7 ctrl-alt-F8 ctrl-alt-F9 etc.

Start as many X servers as you want by incrementing :1 to :2, etc.

[newbie] CD-ROM Install Problem

I've downloaded Mandrake Linux 7.0 and burned it to a CD with the ISO image.
I created a boot floppy and booted the machine with it. I've attempted to
install my CD ROM device, but my device is not recognized. I have a Mitsumi
(I/o 310h and IRQ 10). I've specified the parameters mcd=0x310, 10 but the

Re: [[newbie] Ram Problems]

2000-03-11 Thread Mark Irving

Okay, one more time. You should not just blindly add the line 'append="128M"
' to lilo.conf. You need to test it first. To test it, when linux first
boots you will have a boot: prompt.
-boot:
-Type at the prompt linux mem=128M
-This sets the RAM manually for this session (until you reboot only)
-When I did this I achieved kernel panic, so I rebooted and tried mem=127M
this worked fine.
-I now went to lilo.conf and added the line append=mem="127M" rebooted
-When I rebooted it still only recognized 64MB of RAM
-What I discovered was that I already had an append line in lilo.conf
'append="ide=scsi" for my CD burner. Linux only recognizes one append line
in lilo.conf
-I edited this line to read 'append="ide=scsi mem=127M" ' rebooted and all
is well.

As a side note to this PnP thread...be very careful what you do in there..if
you get curious and start making all kinds of changes to things like Memory
timing's or playing with other setting's...you can very easily break things.
But there is an easy fix for this...:) Reset the BIOS using the jumper/solder
point. If you are comfy with the adjusting the BIOS settings...go for it...if
not..just change _ONE_ thing at a time and save/restart the PC to check the
result.

Does your boot floppy work to boot the hard drive?

If all else fails, you could try to do an upgrade instead of install and
it should rewrite lilo to point at the right boot image.

I don't think that you can. The best you can do is maximize the app,
then go into it's settings to see if you can save them. Then the app

Are you running postgresql on startup?

# ps ax |grep postgresql

If yes, do you need to?

If you do not need to, disable postgresql by doing

# /sbin/setup (as user 'root', going in to 'System services')

Then to halt any existing postgresql process, do

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql stop

Then rm the .pid

(If you're running postgreql and needn't, you may experience a system
performance improvement after doing the 'stop'. Postgresql likes lots
of memory.)

BTW, sending mail as 'root' is a Bad Idea.

 Hi all,

I've been trying (for about a week) to install Mandrake versions 6.1 and
7.02. on
 the following:

 Tyan 1854 motherboard
 pentium PIII-600
 128 meg ram
 IMB 13.Gb HDD
 MATROX G400max
 SB 1024 soundcard
 NE2000 comp. ethernet card

 he problem is as follows:

After booting up from the CD, I presume the following process is hardware
detection, what happens is when it gets to IDE0 and IDE1 the system hangs
for a while and then reports operation timed out and something along the
lines of IDE0 not found (not responding) and the same for IDE1. Carrying
on with the installation after this the process cab't get past the
formatting of
the Linxu partition. The same also occurs trying to install Redhat 6.0.
I've
tried the fips fdisk route as well with no success.

I've managed to successfully install 7.02 on another machine (only real
 difference being the motherboard)

 Anyone have any ideas

Depends on your BIOS (BasicInputOutputSystem). This is what ultimately
controls your hardware. PNP is Plug 'n Play which is exactly that "plug
it in and it's ready to go". This is really only true for Windos. When
your computer boots, you'll probably see a logo for your BIOS
manufacturer (Such as Award or American Megatrends) and maybe something
that says "hit this key to enter setup". You only have about 2 seconds
to do it, so be quick. Mine is del and my mom's Compaq is F10.
 Hope this helps.

RE: [newbie] ata66

2000-03-11 Thread Albert

That's correct.

UDMA/66 only functions under the correct conditions.

(1) BIOS enabled
(2) Proper Hard Drive - enabled by factory or utility
(3) Proper 40-pin 80 wire cable
(4) Operating System supports it.

Mandrake installs with UDMA disabled - it must be enabled by hdparm.
However, this will only support Ultra-DMA Mode 2 with the current Kernel.
To get Ultra-DMA/66 you must patch the Kernel. This patch is in testing and
should ONLY be used on test machines.

The patch is for hpt or Promise. Those of you with the 810, 810e, 820, 840,
596B, 686A must wait for Kernel 2.4... or a different patch.

We've written this article that includes instructions for hdparm.

http://www.linuxtests.org/articles/harddrives/udma/index.htm

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions on how to imrove
the article. We'd love your feedback.

There are also links to the Mini-HOWTO on Ultra-DMA and links to
http://www.linuxnewbie.org which are extremely valuable.

[newbie] LILO and timeout/delay

2000-03-11 Thread bosco

Hey,

Here's an interesting one for you.. I needed to try that mem= b/c I
was running with only 65 when really i have 192.. So here's the deal..
I run Linux on my second hard drive and consequently have LILO on that
drive..

Well I use Bootmagic to choose between Linux and Windows.. When I boot
to Linux it then boots LILO and goes straight to kernel loading.. I had
once before been able to add the command to make it wait but was unable
to recently..

I read in the Lilo manual it was delay=... then I saw in someone
else's lilo.conf they had timeout=xxx... either way neither one of them
worked.. But, I added mem=192M to the append line ( after I had tested

I wanted one that kinda...compares to the windows counterpart...
with that one, all you have to do, is save a file called : kit.crd
for example, with all your input/data/cards. I've seen a couple
acting as address books...but, I always have trouble installing
tar.gz files. I'd like to get one in RPM format, if possible.

Yes you are correct - there is an image on the CD - and I've used that to
get the
system running - however - I suspect there may be something a little different
about the distrib boot disk because it just doesn't even begin to detect
the sound
card, the modem or the my network card.

OR maybe - there's another method for doing this once I have Linux installed ??
I'm not exactly new to massaging operating systems - but this implementation
does seem to be a little ??different??.

My knowledge of unix is rather old now (10 yrs or so) - So I have a heap of
re-learning to do.

Any help on this would be much appreciated...

Subject: [newbie] KiKbd error
Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 16:30:55 PST

Good evening,

searched the archives and the internet.

Running KDE as root and then exit is one error.

KiKbd:X11 error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)

It only happens as root and not as another user.

Looking at the process manager, KiKbd is running in root,
but is not running as another user.

I share the same XF86Config, but haven't discovered where X is starting
KiKbd as root but not another user.

Eliminating KiKbd on root X start may not fix the error, but I hope so.

Can anyone tell me which file it's in?

Thanks!
