Re: [[newbie] Ram Problems]
Okay, one more time. You should not just blindly add the line 'append="128M" ' to lilo.conf. You need to test it first. To test it, when linux first boots you will have a boot: prompt. -boot: -Type at the prompt linux mem=128M -This sets the RAM manually for this session (until you reboot only) -When I did this I achieved kernel panic, so I rebooted and tried mem=127M this worked fine. -I now went to lilo.conf and added the line append=mem="127M" rebooted -When I rebooted it still only recognized 64MB of RAM -What I discovered was that I already had an append line in lilo.conf 'append="ide=scsi" for my CD burner. Linux only recognizes one append line in lilo.conf -I edited this line to read 'append="ide=scsi mem=127M" ' rebooted and all is well. ---Mark Irving--- - Original Message - From: Michael Scottaline [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2000 6:55 AM Subject: Re: [[newbie] Ram Problems]

As a side note to this PnP thread...be very careful what you do in there..if you get curious and start making all kinds of changes to things like Memory timing's or playing with other setting's...you can very easily break things. But there is an easy fix for this...:) Reset the BIOS using the jumper/solder point. Matthew, if you are talking about disabling PnP for the instal, don't be overly concerned with it I think. RE: [newbie] ata66
That's correct. UDMA/66 only functions under the correct conditions. (1) BIOS enabled (2) Proper Hard Drive - enabled by factory or utility (3) Proper 40-pin 80 wire cable (4) Operating System supports it. Mandrake installs with UDMA disabled - it must be enabled by hdparm. However, this will only support Ultra-DMA Mode 2 with the current Kernel. To get Ultra-DMA/66 you must patch the Kernel. This patch is in testing and should ONLY be used on test machines. The patch is for hpt or Promise. Those of you with the 810, 810e, 820, 840, 596B, 686A must wait for Kernel 2.4... or a different patch. We've written this article that includes instructions for hdparm. http://www.linuxtests.org/articles/harddrives/udma/index.htm Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions on how to imrove the article. We'd love your feedback. There are also links to the Mini-HOWTO on Ultra-DMA and links to http://www.linuxnewbie.org which are extremely valuable. [newbie] LILO and timeout/delay
Hey, Here's an interesting one for you.. I needed to try that mem= b/c I was running with only 65 when really i have 192.. So here's the deal.. I run Linux on my second hard drive and consequently have LILO on that drive.. Well I use Bootmagic to choose between Linux and Windows.. When I boot to Linux it then boots LILO and goes straight to kernel loading.. I had once before been able to add the command to make it wait but was unable to recently.. I read in the Lilo manual it was delay=... then I saw in someone else's lilo.conf they had timeout=xxx... either way neither one of them worked.. But, I added mem=192M to the append line ( after I had tested it of course ) and that gets recognized?!?! Any ideas? Is LILO being selective in what it accepts from me.. LOL.. thanks, bosco(). ( at any rate all is well and working like I wanted, but I was nonetlheless still curious.. )

[newbie] Compiling error - Qt 2.0.2 Qt 1.44
Greetings all, You guys sick of me yet? Umm, ok, here's the deal.. When I try and compile a program now, i.e. LICQ 0.76 or a tutorial in K Develop, I get an error that says something like, Failed to compile a simple KDE application. Check if your compiler is installed and if you have used the same compiler to compile Qt and kdelibs as you did use now. any ideas... I sort of need K Develop to work.. I'm a MSVC head.. :) thanks, bosco().

[newbie] floppy disk problems
All, I am having problems with my floppy disk and was wondering whether anyone had encountered this previously or whether anyone knew of a fix for it. WHen I try to access my floppy under a console window using a cd command I get the following error: [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# cd floppy bash: cd: floppy: Input/output error [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# Then, if I try to format the FD I get the following: [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# fdformat /dev/fd0H1440 Double-sided, 80 tracks, 18 sec/track. Total capacity 1440 kB. Formatting ... ioctl(FDFMTBEG): No such device [root@F11-pc-3B022-1 /mnt]# I have used the drive about one hour ago and it worked fine. WHy now do I have these problems and what does it mean? Wayne Wayne Petherick Criminology Department Bond University
