basculethe image of your /etc/lilo.conf is fine. Sure I can
tell you what the p command is, print the partition table, but
the m command (help) will tell you the same thing as well as all
the other available commands. Don't worry about executing fdisk
because it doesn't change anything till you do a w command
(write table to disk and exit). So if you want to run the
program to see something about the partition table then you
simply exit with a q command (quit without saving changes).

GLX module:

Stop fiddling then with Fetchmail. I use GETMAIL, a simple little Python

# This is a sample .getmailrc file
# Comments begin with '#' and so can't appear in usernames, passwords, etc.
# Leading and trailing whitespace is ignored.
#
# To preserve leading or trailing whitespace on an option value, quote it with
# single or double quotes, e.g.
#
# password = ' this is a password '
# or
# password = " this is another password "
#

# Blank lines are ignored.
#
# Accounts to retrieve mail from are specified, one per section in this format:
#
#[section_name] # Make them unique and meaningful to yourself.
#account=popusername
#host=pophost.isp.com
#port=110 # Optional, defaults to standard POP3 port (110)
#destination=path # Maildir or mbox file for mailbox accounts, and
default
# # destination for domain mailbox accounts
#password=POP3password # Optional. If not supplied, getmail will
# # prompt for a password.
#delete=(yes|no)# Optional, delete mail after retrieving.
#readall=(yes|no) # Optional, retrieve all mail or just new mail.
# # 'delete' defaults to 'no'.
# # 'readall' defaults to 'yes'
#type=(mailbox|domainbox) # Optional, defaults to 'mailbox'. 'domainbox'
# # is a domain mailbox, also known as a multidrop
# # mailbox.
#email=destination[:username] # For domain mailbox accounts, specify lines with
#email=destination[:username] # email=destination[:username to change
# ownership of
Maildir files] pairs
#[...]

#
[Demon] # Any unique identifier
type=mailbox# Not necessary, this is the default
account=pagan # Leading and trailing whitespace is ignored
host = pop3.demon.nl# Whitespace around the '=' is OK too
destination=/home/paul/Maildir   # my maildir
password =
delete=yes # Delete mail after retrieving
readall=no

ok and for pine i got it set up and it sends msgs but of course cant read the
mail cause nothing is in /var/spool/mail/LeadingEdge

I use this with pine, together with Qmail to send out the mail (Sendmail
is a pita.) Works wunnerful for me!

Mungalformat it as a linux native primary partition. You
would need to copy the /boot directory and add a new entry to
your /etc/fstab file. You'd need to create a /etc/lilo.conf
file (and delete the contents of your current /boot dierctory)
and then execute /sbin/lilo. Instead, I'd re-install if it were
me, unless there is so much customization done to the current
installation that you don't want to lose.

like a virus of some
sorts. As you can see, it mentions autoexec.bat and the registry - get
virus checker please!

In the mean time (actually always!) write in plain ASCII!

Well first, sorry to everyone for this scare. I guess MS Outlook did
something that I was not aware of...first send messages in HTML. Sorry, I
didn't realize that it was doing that. I know how annoying it looks, but at
the time is was the only e-mail program I had. As for the Active X thing,
I'm afraid I don't even know what it is or what to do about it. I do have a
anti-virus program (Norton AntiVirus) but it didn't pick anything up. If
anyone can send me some information about how this happened or how to stop
it, I would greatly appreciate it :-)
For now I'm using a different e-mail program that sends in generic ASCII
(thank goodness). I'm attempting to send e-mail to myself to try and catch
MS Outlook in the act.

Again, apologies to all!

[newbie] Virus warning

2000-04-28 Thread Evan Holt

Hi there,

Thanks to Jayce Steadman's carefull eye, the virus has been detected. It
only effects users with Microsoft Outlook 4.0 or 5.0 and the patch can be
found here.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms99-032.asp

Here is the technical blurb on it...

The worm appends itself to the end of legitimate outgoing messages as a
signature. When receiving the message, the worm will automatically insert a
copy of itself into the appropriate StartUp directory of the Windows
operating system for both English and French language versions. The file
created is named KAK.HTA.

The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole,
Scriptlet.Typelib, so that a viral file is created on the system without
having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message
will cause the virus to be placed on the system.

Another apology to everyone. That's the last time I'm using MS Outlook ever
again!

I recently received the KAK.hta worm through an innocent email from my

needless

It is easy to tell if you have it, it only works in OutLookExpress, click on
tools, and then options, and then signatures, look to see if the box is
checked that says 'use signatures', then look in the lower text window for
the default signature file of KAK.htm or KAK.hta.

If you have it, it will be there. It is not that hard to get rid of though,
but it does take quite a few clicks as the worm goes into several different
areas of your system.

HI Evan,
It is time you switch to linux. The windoze environment is crawling with
virusses. You sent a copy of the KAK virus. Not sure how to get rid of it,
but I am sure that the www.nai.com or www.symantec.com sites know about

You got it as an e-mail attachment, prolly indeed through Outlook. That is

[newbie] tulip.o and squid

2000-04-28 Thread keith salter

Hi all, from Edinburgh.

I have a couple of questions. First of all there's my netgear fa310 nic
and the driver for it. It can use the standard tulip.o but this seems to
be slower compared to the tulip driver supplied with the card which I
managed to compile on my previous redhat 6.1 dist. So I tried compiling
the same driver (tulip.c) on mandrake 7 and it comes up with pages of
errors (parse errors amongst others) and doesn't produce the tulip.o at
the end of it all. I have been led to believe that it's because mandrake
7 has a newer version of glibc (could this be the cause?) and netgear
have backed away from it.

My other question regards internet connection sharing. I am running
squid on my main machine and have a win 95 client connecting to it which
picks it's internet connection up through the squid proxy running on my
main machine. Is there a more efficient way to share a connection over
the network (ie not have squid eating up memory and cache space) ?

Thanks in advance

Keith Salter

Re: [newbie] LILO: The 1024-cylinder limit has been removed by a patch

2000-04-28 Thread Anthony Huereca

Is it possible to upgrade LILO on a machine currently running the older version?

Of course, that's how most geeks (read: Linux guru's) will upgrade. You can get
it from here: http://www.freshmeat.net/appindex/1998/12/04/912827201.html if
you're brave.

If you're doing a fresh install of Mandrake, can the new LILO be substituted for the
old one?

I don't think it can be. However, if you want to set up a Linux distro beyond
the 1024 limit, you can install it past that. Just make sure you make a boot
disk during installation. Then, after you finish installing, use the boot disk
to get to Linux. Then download and install the new LILO, and you're set.

 Regards,
 Nathan

I was going to comment on this news too, I'm excited about it. Finally you can
put Linux at the back of the drive with no worries at all. The 1024 limit also
confused a lot of Newbies (including me) when they first heard about it, so now
that won't be an issue anymore. I wonder if Mandrake will put it in 7.1

Hey dude is there a way to make certain web pages
(or the browser) stop grumbling at you when you
don't have an active x plug-in?

Maybe something I can put in my plugger config file?

By the way, I "swiped" comic sans ms font and now have it
as one of the defaults on my linux machine, hehehe.

On Fri, 28 Apr 2000, you wrote:
First off, ActiveX is a type of programming used in M$ products to enhance
the html experience. An example would be using the meta tag in a web page
and assigning it the 'transition' or 'blend' attributes; you can make one
page fade to another. The problem is that you can write your own ActiveX
controls and yes they can be malicious. However, it does not make ActiveX
'evil' anymore than C++; I happen to use ActiveX on my own web page and it's
quite cool! Unless you've changed something in your Outlook settings, by
default you will have the correct settings to keep from running 'unsigned'
ActiveX controls ('medium' should do it). You can probably tell, I'm not a
'hardcore' Linux user. I do enjoy Linux very much and would like to someday
be able to use it for all my computing needs; however, I still appreciate
the advancements made in the computer world today. I think that 'text only'
sucks! That's why I use Netscape under Linux and Internet Explorer under
Windows, I like the pictures! If everything were text only, you wouldn't
even have embedded links! Imagine having to type that whole 300 character
web address everytime you wanted to send a link! (o.k. maybe that's a
*little* exaggerated) Anyway, the people I've seen whine the most about
html messages are the same ones that have this .signature file that takes up
3 paragraphs of quotes and ASCII pictures! What's the difference?! You're
still wasting my time with all that extra junk... it's called personality.
O.k., maybe it's not the best thing for mail lists, but let's have a show of
hands - how many people REALLY use pine or equivalent ONLY? If the majority
use html enabled browsers, then why try to make everyone conform to a
standard that's dated back to the day when 'text only' was the only? This
is just my opinion, so PLEASE, don't everyone jump to flame me. If you
don't agree, that's fine, but I think running someone into the ground and
suggesting that they be 'kicked off the list' is just a *little* harsh.

 Mike =)

  Hi there,

i have attached the following that is in his messages...this is a
malicious script...i think he needs to be kicked off the list...

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.. First I would like to ask what
on earth this Active X bit is all about? I have no idea where on earth it
came from or what it even is. All I can say is that it must be something
that Microsoft Outlook is doing, so I have switched e-mail programs in
hopes that it stops. Don't you think that you should have asked me first
what it is rather than writing slanderous messages about me?

I know this might sound a little bit freaky but I really need to do
 this.

You _really_ need to kill the HTML and the huge signature.

It's a shool project which must simulate a conection to a WWW Virtual
Store (a Linux-Mdk 7.0 PC with Apache) from a Win machine. But I
really don't know where to start working on. My 1st question would be
what is the proper IP Address for the Server? (does it have to be one
 of the privates [10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255; 172.16.0.0 -
 172.16.255.255 o 192.168.0.0 al 192.168.255.255])

Depends on the situation. If you've gotten an IP range assigned by your
service provider, you can use a public IP address. If you're using NAT
(masquerading) on the Internet gateway, you'll need to use the private
address ranges you listed above (as well as configure the gateway to
forward HTTP packets to the proper internal machine).

Simple situation: put private IP addresses on client and server
machines, put them on same network and away you go. If you're not fond
of typing IP numbers to connect to the server, add the server's IP and
hostname to /etc/hosts on the client machine (or you could configure DNS
on the server and point the client to that for name resolution -- which
is better depends on network size and how often it changes).

I really appreciate if someone could tell me the steps to achieve my
 goal. (very briefly I'm not asking for a detailed networking tutorial;
I actually have some theorical knowledge in networking, It's just I
don't have practical experience at all).

Unless you've skipped something in the description of the problem above,
there's not much practical networking going on... :)

Re: [newbie] supermount?

2000-04-28 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Mogens, I hope the following will help you a bit.

Here's an example from /etc/fstab :

/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd00 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermountfs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0

Here's the Man Document:

SUPERMOUNT(8) MandrakeSoft SUPERMOUNT(8)

NAME
supermount - Enable or disable supermount feature

SYNOPSIS
   supermount [OPTION]... disable | enable

DESCRIPTION
supermount allows system administrator to enable or dis¡
able the supermount feature offered in recent kernels.
This feature automatically manages mounting and unmounting
removable medias when needed. The script simply adds or
remove the supermount option from within the entries of
the /etc/fstab file. Without option -i the modified file
   is printed to stdout.

supermount has to be launched with one of the following
   arguments:

enable in order to enable supermount feature on relevant
  drives (cdrom and floppy drives),

   disable
in order to disable the supermount feature on all
  drives.

OPTIONS
   -f=FILE, --file=FILE
Indicates an alternate file where to make modifica¡
  tions. The default is /etc/fstab.

   -i, --infile
Modifications are made directly to /etc/fstab or
FILE specified through -f option, instead of being
  outputted to stdout.

   -h, --help, -?
  print a short help message.

 hi sevatio
i reinstalled without supermount and then enabled from a command line,
it seems to be working for the cd drives but i still get no joy for the
floppy, i get an error message saying either bad fstype, too many
mounted filesystems, bad superblock on /dev/fd0
i have put both vfat and ext2 into /etc/filesystems but unless i got the
format of this file wrong it makes no difference even when not using
 supermount and doing it manually,
i notice that the error message that i get appears immediately i attempt
to mount the floppy even though the floppy drive light stays on for a
 while

I doubt supermount ever worked when installed by the mandrake CD. For what I'm
about to say, there should be a newer solution
for
your problem. I just installed Mandrake without the supermount option. Then I
activated it later. Also, you should go to the
MUO
area in mandrake's website. It should cover these issues. Check for a newer
version of supermount.
While you're there, get the newer version of NumLock because the one that came
with the CD doesn't work very well either.

Hej there

I don't quite understand your problems - I have got the 7.0-set, and the supermount
works just fine - until I start changing the
system
(like configuring the kernel). How do I activate it from a commandline?
