basculethe image of your /etc/lilo.conf is fine. Sure I can tell you what the p command is, print the partition table, but the m command (help) will tell you the same thing as well as all the other available commands. Don't worry about executing fdisk because it doesn't change anything till you do a w command (write table to disk and exit). So if you want to run the program to see something about the partition table then you simply exit with a q command (quit without saving changes). Re: [newbie] LILO installation help .....
Mungalformat it as a linux native primary partition. You would need to copy the /boot directory and add a new entry to your /etc/fstab file. You'd need to create a /etc/lilo.conf file (and delete the contents of your current /boot dierctory) and then execute /sbin/lilo. Instead, I'd re-install if it were me, unless there is so much customization done to the current installation that you don't want to lose. Alan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear all, I have PC with one 40G hdd. I split the HDD into two partitions. Partition 1 of 20Gb and has Windows98 installed on it. Having acquired Partition Magic, I have created a small partition 9~15Mb) at the start of the HDD by moving and shrinking the windows partition. The questions I have are: 1. How do I format the new partition for use by Linux. 2. What software do I need to copy into the new partition (which I persume will be the /boot partition). 3. How do I install LILO as I don't have /etc/lilo.conf Many thanks for your help. Regards Mungal.
[newbie] Apology and findings...
Hi again, I received this off list from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (thanks) Here is the source of your last message: since you wrote them in html (grrr), an ActiveX applet has managed to worm its way in - it looks to me like a virus of some sorts. As you can see, it mentions autoexec.bat and the registry - get virus checker please! In the mean time (actually always!) write in plain ASCII! Well first, sorry to everyone for this scare. I guess MS Outlook did something that I was not aware of...first send messages in HTML. Sorry, I didn't realize that it was doing that. I know how annoying it looks, but at the time is was the only e-mail program I had. As for the Active X thing, I'm afraid I don't even know what it is or what to do about it. I do have a anti-virus program (Norton AntiVirus) but it didn't pick anything up. If anyone can send me some information about how this happened or how to stop it, I would greatly appreciate it :-) For now I'm using a different e-mail program that sends in generic ASCII (thank goodness). I'm attempting to send e-mail to myself to try and catch MS Outlook in the act. Again, apologies to all! Evan Holt

[newbie] Virus warning
Hi there, Thanks to Jayce Steadman's carefull eye, the virus has been detected. It only effects users with Microsoft Outlook 4.0 or 5.0 and the patch can be found here. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms99-032.asp Here is the technical blurb on it... The worm appends itself to the end of legitimate outgoing messages as a signature. When receiving the message, the worm will automatically insert a copy of itself into the appropriate StartUp directory of the Windows operating system for both English and French language versions. The file created is named KAK.HTA. The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole, Scriptlet.Typelib, so that a viral file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system. Another apology to everyone. That's the last time I'm using MS Outlook ever again! Evan
[newbie] Re Active X on Evans Messages
I recently received the KAK.hta worm through an innocent email from my brother. It was on 4-23-00, I had not recently updated my virus files, needless to say I have now. It is easy to tell if you have it, it only works in OutLookExpress, click on tools, and then options, and then signatures, look to see if the box is checked that says 'use signatures', then look in the lower text window for the default signature file of KAK.htm or KAK.hta. If you have it, it will be there. It is not that hard to get rid of though, but it does take quite a few clicks as the worm goes into several different areas of your system. b/web

[newbie] tulip.o and squid
Hi all, from Edinburgh. I have a couple of questions. First of all there's my netgear fa310 nic and the driver for it. It can use the standard tulip.o but this seems to be slower compared to the tulip driver supplied with the card which I managed to compile on my previous redhat 6.1 dist. So I tried compiling the same driver (tulip.c) on mandrake 7 and it comes up with pages of errors (parse errors amongst others) and doesn't produce the tulip.o at the end of it all. I have been led to believe that it's because mandrake 7 has a newer version of glibc (could this be the cause?) and netgear have backed away from it. My other question regards internet connection sharing. I am running squid on my main machine and have a win 95 client connecting to it which picks it's internet connection up through the squid proxy running on my main machine. Is there a more efficient way to share a connection over the network (ie not have squid eating up memory and cache space) ? Thanks in advance Keith Salter

It would be wise to set your internet security setting to such a level that activeX scripts cannot run, unless you give them explicit permission. [newbie] Problems with my aha 1505
I just install Mandrake 7 on my system. I know that linux don't have module for my aha 1505, but i have a rather old pc (P150) and no more free PCI slot. So I try to load the module for aha 152x on the command line (modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x140 , 11 , 7 , 0 , 1 , 1 , 100 , 0) and all is ok. But, to use the command line every time i boot my pc, is not a very 'elegant' way to load my scsi card. So my question is : what the way to automate this procedure at boot time ? Sorry to have a so stupid question, but i discover linux for less than 2 weeks now. I know pretty well the m$ os (98 and nt) but it don't help much. Thx for the help [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] LILO: The 1024-cylinder limit has been removed by a patch
Is it possible to upgrade LILO on a machine currently running the older version? Of course, that's how most geeks (read: Linux guru's) will upgrade. You can get it from here: http://www.freshmeat.net/appindex/1998/12/04/912827201.html if you're brave. If you're doing a fresh install of Mandrake, can the new LILO be substituted for the old one? I don't think it can be. However, if you want to set up a Linux distro beyond the 1024 limit, you can install it past that. Just make sure you make a boot disk during installation. Then, after you finish installing, use the boot disk to get to Linux. Then download and install the new LILO, and you're set. Regards, Nathan I was going to comment on this news too, I'm excited about it. Finally you can put Linux at the back of the drive with no worries at all. The 1024 limit also confused a lot of Newbies (including me) when they first heard about it, so now that won't be an issue anymore. I wonder if Mandrake will put it in 7.1 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= the webcam to end all webcams http://jennings.yi.org/webcam -- Anthony Huereca http://m3000.1wh.com Computers are not intelligent. Everything worked just fine, but unfortunately I had forgotten the ppp = no internet, so compiling again (bzImage). This time I had a lockup = system halted. Re: RE:[newbie] Active X on Evan Messages
Hey dude is there a way to make certain web pages (or the browser) stop grumbling at you when you don't have an active x plug-in? Maybe something I can put in my plugger config file? By the way, I "swiped" comic sans ms font and now have it as one of the defaults on my linux machine, hehehe. On Fri, 28 Apr 2000, you wrote: First off, ActiveX is a type of programming used in M$ products to enhance the html experience. An example would be using the meta tag in a web page and assigning it the 'transition' or 'blend' attributes; you can make one page fade to another. The problem is that you can write your own ActiveX controls and yes they can be malicious. However, it does not make ActiveX 'evil' anymore than C++; I happen to use ActiveX on my own web page and it's quite cool! Unless you've changed something in your Outlook settings, by default you will have the correct settings to keep from running 'unsigned' ActiveX controls ('medium' should do it). You can probably tell, I'm not a 'hardcore' Linux user. I do enjoy Linux very much and would like to someday be able to use it for all my computing needs; however, I still appreciate the advancements made in the computer world today. I think that 'text only' sucks! That's why I use Netscape under Linux and Internet Explorer under Windows, I like the pictures! If everything were text only, you wouldn't even have embedded links! Imagine having to type that whole 300 character web address everytime you wanted to send a link! (o.k. maybe that's a *little* exaggerated) Anyway, the people I've seen whine the most about html messages are the same ones that have this .signature file that takes up 3 paragraphs of quotes and ASCII pictures! What's the difference?! You're still wasting my time with all that extra junk... it's called personality. O.k., maybe it's not the best thing for mail lists, but let's have a show of hands - how many people REALLY use pine or equivalent ONLY? If the majority use html enabled browsers, then why try to make everyone conform to a standard that's dated back to the day when 'text only' was the only? This is just my opinion, so PLEASE, don't everyone jump to flame me. If you don't agree, that's fine, but I think running someone into the ground and suggesting that they be 'kicked off the list' is just a *little* harsh. If you've gotten an IP range assigned by your service provider, you can use a public IP address. If you're using NAT (masquerading) on the Internet gateway, you'll need to use the private address ranges you listed above (as well as configure the gateway to forward HTTP packets to the proper internal machine). Simple situation: put private IP addresses on client and server machines, put them on same network and away you go. If you're not fond of typing IP numbers to connect to the server, add the server's IP and hostname to /etc/hosts on the client machine (or you could configure DNS on the server and point the client to that for name resolution -- which is better depends on network size and how often it changes).
