Hey Mark, how ya doing today. your message is repeating itself. I think there's an echo on the server, or a BIG hicup. didn't get anything all night and now...well, now getting some old messages. weird, huh? Hmm, well I can't say if something's wrong with the server since I might have sent this mail twice accidentally (cos I sent it two days ago and it didn't appear on the list), but according to the mail header it is the same mail twice. I even got *your* mail twice, but not Kelly's, so I don't know. If you are on ICQ, maybe it would be easier to talk on there. My # is 3795801. Concerning the old messages - I received 74 today and I haven't been here for one day, so that's pretty few, since the day's average is about 100, which means I expected about 200 messages to come. Re[2]: [newbie] OT Linux gaming OT
Hey Larry, Since this mail was probably directed mostly to me, I'll try to reply to it. I can hardly believe this thread. There is no way in hell that any os company (even ms) can have enough time and resources to write drivers for all the hardware out there. I repeat ... not even MS. As Jon Robertson said (and I agree), it is not the OS companies' job to make the drivers. It's the hardware poducers job. Off the top of my head, x86 Linux has better hardware support then any other os except ms win95/98. See, and this is one of the reasons why it is more used than Linux or W2K or NT or Be or any other OS. what about ce? I guess CE doesn't need to, the same way as it doesn't need to run a web server. Third, if you can't wrap your mind around the idea of partitions and mount points then there just isn't much hope for you. In my initial mail I said it was at the point of installing Linux. At that idea I had no idea what they were and there was no help in the install program that would tell me or at least give me a hint. Ever upgraded or reinstalled a MS system (seems like I can't go more then 3 months)? Yes, I did once on my old computer, from W95 to W98. That was about two years ago and it still works fine. On the other hand, I must admit that on my new computer I had to reinstall windows twice already because of flashing new BIOSes three times, changing IRQs of BIOS devices and my graphics card. It should work now, though. At least I don't have to reboot after using it. It seems to me that the biggest complaint about windows is rebooting (apart from BSoD). IMNSHO this is because of misconfiguration of the system. Old drivers, bad settings, small swap file, etc. If you would take the time to learn windows the same way you are learning Linux I think then you would have windows stable, without BSoDs and reboots. This is not a personal attack, just my opinion acording to what I have read on this list. It took me some time to get windows running smoothly, but now it does. I guess it would be the same with Linux, but so far I haven't seen a compelling reason to change to Linux. I have it on my system in dualboot, but as you guys say, "Don't change a winning team.", which has been windows so far for me. more rantYou can't keep your applications on another partition, reinstall the os, and expect them to work with that freakin' Satanic registry./morerant Have you tried to export their registry keys ? Fourth, a bit closer to the original posting. Granted, a V5 What is a V5 ? isn't going to be the easiest thing to get working at this point, but in two or three months every distro will have X4.0 with fairly modern 3d drivers ... That means downloading 650 megs again. (I am currently downloading MDK 7.1) sarcasmYou mean there are problems with some games in Linux ... oh dear, I can't ever seem to recall any articles in either PC Gamer or MaximumPC bitching about broken games and patches for windows. Although I haven't said much about games, but as you say, "patches for windows". At least there are patches for windows. I wonder how I can get Aliens vs. Predator or StarCraft runing under Linux. WinE ? Fact: there games are just as broken as ours. OK, but I rather take broken games with the hope that I can have some patch soon than no (OK, few) games without much support for Linux. Does the win98 install give you either an easy install Easy install - I would say yes. What have you found difficult about it ? or much choice? Don't think so. Can Win98 install over a network? Nope. FTP? You are right, it doesn't. It wasn't designed for that, it was designed for the home/office desktop user, not for really heavy duty network jobs. Ever had a win98 system setup with 5 or 6 comilers/languages; all the internet tools you can use; graphics programs; multimedia players; mp3 rippers/encoders in under a hour? Compilers/langs - you are right, it doesn't and they are very expensive, too. Other things - internet tools - I don't know, since I don't have inet at home so I haven't tried them. Graphics programs - what other programs are there for image manipulation apart from GIMP ? Not saying that there are any for windows (the omnipotent mspaint not included), but you said "programs", not "program". Multimedia players - the reason why I like WinAMP more than XMMS is that plugin writers support it more than XMMS. That means that my favorite plugin (Geiss, www.geisswerks.com) runs with WinAMP and not with XMMS. Is there a way to make it run under Linux ? Is there any area in which XMMS (or any other MP3 player) is superior to WinAMP ? Cos I don't see any sense in using it if I already have such a thing (WinAMP) which I like more. MP3 rippers/encoders - haven't seen or used them (under Linux). Apart from that - I lacked a file manager at least equal or superior to Windows Commander. Is there anything under Linux that can offer me WC's power and effectivity ? A week?

Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking
Hi Greg, I never did see my first post so I,m sending again. I don't think I have an IRQ conflict -NIC is IRQ 10 , External Modem on serial port 2 s/b IRQ 3,I have set for ttyS1. I played in the BIOS with pnp but that didn't help. I went to ppp/plip/slip and found ppp0 I don't see anything to change?I did try seting some options but didn't help. I installed pmfirewall again and choose "not' to start at boot" ,---but to start on" successful ppp connection". Didn't help! It doesn't seem to find ppp0. I found something at /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.11/scripts that mentions about adding "usepeerdns" to /etc/ppp/ip-up.local I can't fine this file. It said something about having to create an executible script. Is this anything that might help? If i don't keep using Kppp what would you advise trying? Thanks for help Bob - Original Message - From: Greg Stewart [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 21, 2000 10:04 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking OK, it sounds to me as thought you do not have you modem set up correctly. Maybe an IRQ conflict with eth0 (if you have to take one down to bring the other up), try switching slots if you can and see what happens...do you have Plug-nPlay enabled in your bios? You may want to tun it off (or on, as the case may be). Then go into netconf, or linuxconf and check all your setting for PPP/PLIP/SLIP...if you don't have your modem configured here (ppp0), that could be the problem also--I remember back about a year or so ago, when I actually used kppp for a month, that it has its own configuration, apart from the system networking configuration. If you decide to continue using kppp, you'll also have to add a script line to execute pmfirewall start after a connection is made I don't think it uses /sbin/ifup to call the ppp scrits in /etc/ppp. And that is where pmfirewall puts itself for ppp dial-up (in /etc/ppp/ip-up.local). Since you modem and NIC are conflicting, we need to figure out why they "just can't all get along" before we can get packets to pass through the firewall. --Greg Hi Greg, I did as you advised except"portsentry". Haven't tried that yet. I installed pmfirewall, and checked /etc/hosts.allow and /et/hosts.deny After installing pmfirewall I did ./pmfirewall restart and it showed my dns numbers allright but it said about ppp0 "device not found" also under ipchains an "invalid mask message" at the end it showed External ppp0 / Anyway Kppp still fails. The only time I can get Kppp to connect and :reach out" is when I disable eth0 and my DNS number. Under Kppp Statistics It will say Local Addr 6x.xx.xx.x Remote Addr. 208.223.199.240 What do I try next? RE: [newbie] Why are these ports open?
If you are networked, it's probably best NOT to run these services. Go to your /etc/inetd.conf file and comment out every line you don't need. After you make the changes, you'll have to restart inetd (header in inetd.conf should tell you how). If you want telnet and ftp type services, your best bet is to use a secure shell implementation. Look at www.ssh.com or www.openssh.org. I've been reading Maximum Linux Security recently, and it's helped me a lot -- you may want to invest in a Linux security book if you'll be doing mission critical work (or if you just don't want the hassle of being cracked). --Bryan -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Goldenpi Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 1:03 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Why are these ports open? Without trying to plug myself ... I contributed to a book on the GIMP for Linux. Prior tp being involved I though it was quite bare for features dont let the simple interface fool you though its an extremely powerful tool for doing almost any graphical manipulation including picture touching (removing red eye etc) www.gimp.org has some great links to some documentation regarding using the app as well as a few books that are out there. The base for GIMP as far as my understanding, was actually Photoshop so the interface might feel close to home. Lonny Selinger

Default services are included with a default installation (although some durring configuration at setup can be stopped). most of these are probably run right from inetd so to stop them... open /etc/inetd.conf and comment out the services you would like to NOT be running and kill -HUP inetd. Rescan should show the ports unbound. Got the following error: Booting 'linux' kernel (hd1,4)/boot/vmlinuz-smp root=/dev/sb5 Error: File not found What to do? More importantly, what did I do wrong in the upgrade to cause this? Are there explicit instructions somewhere on how to upgrade the kernel using RPM? -- Anthony http://binaryfusion.net Computers are not intelligent. They only think they are.
Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking
I'm still thinking...but what's on /dev/ttyS0 (serial port 1)? Can you try moving the modem there? Also, have you tried removing the NIC and starting the machine to see if all goes well? Did you try switching the PCI/ISA slot in which you have the NIC? It's very strange that you have to take one device down to get the other to intialise...It reeks of an IRQ conflict, but the two devices are defintely not sharing the same IRQ. Is there anything else on IRQ 3? I haven't used an external modem at all so I'm not familiar with how the system recognises it, nor how it's driven. But I can't figure it's that difficult to get going. Is the modem brought up at boot? If so, maybe change that. pmfirewall should have no trouble seeing the modem when it does come up, even if pmfirewall is in the boot script--yeah, you'll get messages up arse in /var/log/messages, but you can ignore that if you don't mind a large log file. I'm assuming you shutdown daily? For the "usepeerdns", of which I'm unsure, you can add a file in /etc/ppp called ip-up.local if you simply open it in vi. su to root first, vi ip-up.local, and andd whatever lines were suggested tou you. save the file and exit. Then do chmod +x ip-up.local. The ip-up script already has a line in it (well, it should) to call ip-up.local. This is for user configuration, as they suggest we leave our hands off ip-up. All I can think of right now, is that if you haven't areadly physically changed the position of the hardware (move the NIC to another slot, and change serial ports for the modem), then do so. Try booting with one out, then the other out, and see what happens. If you can do this, and give me as much detail as possible about the resultsm and any log entries, that might help think. Sorry I don't have more for you to work with right now. --Greg Hi Greg, I never did see my first post so I,m sending again. [newbie] 7.1 Install freezes at IDE config
I'm trying to install Mandrake 7.1, but it consistently freezes at the "configuring IDE" installation stage (I have to hit the 'reset' button). I've tried booting from the CDROM and launching from w/in Win98, lin4win and full install, graphical and text install, PnP BIOS off and on, always with the same result. Any suggestions as to how to fix this (or information resources on the web that deal with installation troubleshooting--haven't found much of that)? I should admit that I know practically nothing about linux, but thought that the reportedly idiotproof Linux-Mandrake would be a good way to learn. Re: [newbie] Loading the on-board NIC tulip driver
I believe it's the following steps. Try it first without the insmod command, that may be done for you by the ifconfig step. insmod net/tulip In /etc/conf.modules... alias eth0 tulip ifconfig eth0 up {ip address} DougC wrote: Hello all, I installed 7.1 yesterday but during configuration, it did not list my 10/100 Linksys Ethernet card for my cable modem ( not a PMCIA card - just a regular card). I went to the linksys website and they explained that the on-board (already in linux) 'tulip.o' driver is compatible and should work. How does one exactly 'load' this tulip.o driver? I found this file buried under a bunch of subdirs. Some YES/No Questions: 1- Must I be at Admin level to do this step? 2- Will any command line 'screen' allow me to do this ? 3- Must I be in the subdir where the tulip.o file/driver is located. 4- Are there straight forward command to load it? Re: [newbie] how to restart
Ok...Ed, here's what ya do. At the LILO prompt type 'linux single'. Where I have typed linux you type what ever you've named that partition. Like on my machine I like the label name to be short. Mine is 'lin'. Anyway, at the prompt type 'linux single' without the quotes of course and then hit ENTER. This will take you to a bash prompt. at the bash prompt you can start linuxconf and take care of your problem. the first thing you want to do is to turn off the ipchains service that is at the moment set to start up at boot time. when linuxconf comes up open 'control panel' then 'control service activity'. find the 'ipchains' service in the list, choose it from the list and set it's status to either 'manual' or disabled. either one will work for you. now, close linuxconf, and at the bash prompt type 'reboot' and hit ENTER. at the LILO prompt type the label name for the linux partition , 'linux 3'. this will take you to run level 3. which is the console login screen. from here you can log in as root, run linuxconf and clean up the mess. I would suggest that you do this in console so that you don't raise any more dust than you have to. if you need to navigate around your system and you're not proficient at doing so in a terminal window or the console you can use the file manager named Midnight Commander. On the command line type 'mc' and hit ENTER. A DOS like screen will start up and from there you will instantly know what to do. MC has the ability to edit, view, copy, delete, so and so forth. It is a very powerful console file manager/editor/viewer. I can't do without it. In fact I use it more than any of the other file managers on my Mandrake 7.1 system. Good luck and remember...breath in...breath out. Repeat this process until everything looks better. Then dive in and before you know it you'll have everything back to normal. -- Mark ** =/\= No Penguins were harmed | ICQ#27816299 ** _||_ in the making of this | ** =\/= message...| Registered Linux user #182496 On Wed, 23 Aug 2000, Ed Tharp wrote: I was playing around with trying to get ipmasq and ip chains running, and screwed up so badly now I can not restart linux. anyone got any ideas? not even with linux 1 will it boot.
