Re: [newbie] fresh install?
Yes, that's what I do for all my upgrades. Just install like normal, but make sure you don't format your /home partition during the install. Currently, I have /home on a separate partition. Is it possible to do a fresh installation, as opposed to an upgrade, without any changes being made to /home? [newbie] Re: I want Micro-EMACS (fwd)
Thanks David for the directory listings and for taking the trouble to respond, but there is no sign of emacs in Linux Complete. I bought the 4-disk boxed set with a disk of upgrades and emacs is nowhere to be found. Xemacs consists of three files on the second disk in the RPMS2 directory: xemacs-21.1.12-2mdk.i586.rpm xemacs-extras-21.1.12-2mdk.i586.rpm xemacs-mule-21.1.12-2mdk.i586.rpm I can live with xemacs but I cannot reproduce all the key bindings which I had been used to under emacs for ten years. [newbie] weird happenings
Howdy im running 3 mandrake systems in my lan with very good experiences . First i have a small 150 mhz intel with 32 MB RAM and two networkcards one going to my cable modem the other going to my hub acting as firewall running mandrake 7.1 for over a year nonstop with no probs at all . The second machine is a fast 700Athlon (the real athlon) with 3x64 MB RAM a geforce2, firewire adaptor a quantum 8G HD booting windows 98SE (cause of the firewire adaptor which doesnt show up under MDK 8) and a seagate 20G HD booting MDK 8 . The third is a Sony Vaio 505 with external pcmcia cdrom (which i dont use cause the slot is busy with a NIC) on this one i run MDK 8 aswell using blackbox cause i have only 32 MB RAM. Well i have a few probs on the main machine (athlon) first : when i download big data (an iso image of mdk) via ftp it wont take it to the end actually the downloads always succeed but it wont stop, it stops moving at 100%, lets say 650 of 650 MB are in but the transfer still shows stalled at the last byte. [newbie] Permissions Problem
Hi, I'm newish to Linux. I've got Mankdrake 7.2 installed and working fine apart from a little permissions problem. I'm using my workstaton as a web server as well for local development. I also use my workstation at work for the same thing and in order to keep current copies of everything I'm working on I use a zip disk and swop it between computers. I have the apache root set to be /mnt/zip. My problem is that I need the zip disk to be owned by nobody so that the web server will work properly (i.e. when I try to upload files via PHP, I get permission denied), but the zip disk is always mounted as root. How can I have the zip disk owned by nobody but still be able to edit the files on the disk without having to change user? I'm using supermount (or whatever). Thanks for any help, Cheers, Jord
Re: [newbie]OS idenity,Dhcp Eth0 and more!!
Phil, I am one of the lucky ones. I am using the Road Runner service, and I have had no problem connecting with Linux. I got my connection working by going to DrakConfNetwork and Internet Configuration and then selecting 'Configure cable connection'. If memory serves me, I did have to go into Linuxconfig and set the DNS info manually. I also re-booted to make sure my changes took effect. (Can you tell I'm a windows convert?) Now, I'm no expert, but a couple things come to mind; 1). Is it possible that your RR franchise has given you a static IP address, and is not using DHCP? 2). You may need to set a specific host name. Check with customer support. 3). I'm sure you've already checked this, but what the heck, I'll ask anyway. Is your network card supported under Linux? If you have everything set up correctly, you may just have to wait a while for the dhcp server to dole you out an IP address. Hope that helps, Andy On Monday 16 April 2001 00:22, you wrote: Any comments thanks in advance?? When i run ifup eth0 I get an error message unable to get ip info via dhcpcd. RE: [newbie] Linux programming languages
The answer is quit simple. The Linux kernel is written in C. Also, most of the GNU utilities are written in C. The choice of which language to use is really a matter of the intended application requirements. For speed and small size, C is best. For scripting and GUI based applications, Perl or Python are good choices. One nice thing about using Perl or Python is that the application does not have to be recompiled for each target platform as it does with C or C++. If you are interested in learning to program, the choice of language depends on what you want to do. If you want to work on system level code, then learn C. If you want to write utilities or GUI based applications that are not speed critical, then learn Perl and/or Python. -Original Message- From: stevel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 10:33 AM To: linux mailing list Subject: [newbie] Linux programming languages What language is used by most linux programmers? Emacs is further provided in X11 and non-X11 versions. The X11 version can also be used on a terminal, but the non-X11 version cannot be run in X. From the above I would think that all you need basically is the emacs-20.7.9 and the emacs-X11 package. Or I could just install emacs from my old RedHat disks. [newbie] Powerchute -- ttyS0
howdy, i'm trying to set up powerchute for linux to run with an APC back-UPS 500 so that it will shut down my system if the power goes out. it is attached on com1 / ttyS0 it is working under windows just fine the powerchute for linux installed good except that the software requires total control of the port that it is on, and it seems that there may be something else using that port which would explain why i can not communicate with the UPS. so my question is -- how do i go about finding out what is using ttyS0? if someone can at least point me to the command or program that would do this i can probably start to puzzle it out. no need for long detailed instructions -- yet -- let me mess it up first, then i'll be back.=) thank you much Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes they make software modems work under linux but they feel the best use of such devices is automated telephony. Fax software there is aplenty in the regular distro. Re: [newbie] Kmail and Proxies.
Sorry Chris,...My bad! Should've mentioned in previous post, I'm using Mandrake Security. It uses Bastille, and Squid. There aren't any pop or smtp servers in-house. All handled by the ISP. So, I have to be able to use my proxy's port to get out of my LAN and get to the ISP to collect email. The problem is that there aren't any settings in KMail for proxy settings. That's what I'm curious about. We're running 50% Windows (Yuch! Ptewey!) and 50% Mandrake (WooHoo!) workstations. Outlook express handles the proxy by using whatever you setup in IE5.5 . Netscape handles the proxy fine, but only if you're running 1 - POP3 account. You can't run multiple POP3 accounts on 1 PC with Netscape, unless there are multiple users, which requires that you re-login for each. Thanks anyways for the help. So in the e-mail program you just enter your Server's IP address for all your pop3 and smtp servers instead of mail.blah.com, in my case 192.168.0.1 ( A common configuration) and the port is however your server is set up, 25 for smtp in my case and 110 for Pop3. [newbie] Intelligent Installs: a suggestion to Mandrake
I'm posting this here initially because this suggestion might be a bit naive and I don't specifically want to bother Mandrake if it is; I'd rather bother you folks :P I installed 8.0 last night, and as per many suggestions in the past I didn't to an upgrade I just did a full blown re-install of everything but /home However, I was thinking, would it be too terrible hard for Mandrake to do an intelligent installation where it would remember the following small list of items when doing an install: - what keyboard you are using - what time zone you are in - what kind of mouse you are using - keep your /etc/hosts file and not have to ask you again - or maybe it would ask you if you would like to retain these settings before continuing. Besides that, 8.0 seems really nice, those pictures during the install were really quite amusing...
