[newbie-it] Rockwell/Conexant modem

2001-12-02 Thread Fabio Manunza

Salve a tutti.
Data,Fax,Voice,Speakerphone PCI.
Da qui il primo conflitto. A chi dare
ragione?
Ringraziamenti anticipati a chi vorrà
aiutarmi.

R: [newbie-it] mdk8.1 e permessi partizioni windows

2001-12-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In /etc/fstab puoi usare alcuni parametri specifici
man mount). Alcuni in particolare servono proprio
 per risolvere questo problema:

 umask, uid e gid

umask=sequenza numerica dove sequenza numerica e'

funziona, grazie. Come fai a smontare DevFS?

ciaoMatteo

[newbie-it] Zip Floppy? Si grazie!

2001-12-02 Thread CyberPenguin

Ciao a tutti,
utente.
Ovviamente se mi loggo come root è tutto a posto. Ma se, da
utente in Kde clicco sui 2 collegamenti specificati ottengo come
messaggio: /mnt/floppy directory inesistente oppure /mnt/zip
directory inesistente.

/dev/hda5 on / type ext2 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
none on /dev/pst type devpts (rw,mode=0620)
/dev/hda7 on home type ext2 (rw)
/mnt/cdrom on /mnt/cdrom type supermount
(rw,fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom)
/mnt/cdrom2 on /mnt/cdrom2 type supermount
(rw,fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2)
/mnt/floppy on /mnt/floppy type supermount
(rw,fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0)
/mnt/zip on /mnt/zip type supermount (rw,fs=vfat,dev=/dev/zip)
[giovabb@localhost giovabb]$ /mnt/floppy type supermount
bash: /mnt/floppy: Permesso negato

Cosa sbaglio?
... ma soprattutto come posso rimediare?

Thanks.

[newbie-it] OT: ATTENTI AL VIRUS!

2001-12-02 Thread Daniele Micci

Ciao a tutti,
W32/BadTrans. A me ne sono già arrivate 4 o 5.
virus conosciuti...
Come sempre, buon Linux a tutti!

[newbie-it] configurazione stampante

2001-12-02 Thread CyberPenguin

di no.
questa noiosissima trafila :-||
a capo.

I suspect it has something to do with the Ext3 filesystem I have.

[newbie] Problem in Changing to Single User Mode (runlevel 1)

2001-12-02 Thread Mandrake Newbie

Hello, gurus!

I was trying to change from my default runlevel 5 to single user mode (runlevel 1)
using the command of:

# telinit 1

but I think, I hanged up. What could be the problem with this?

I am using Mandrake 8.1, default kernel 2.4.8.

BTW, I am planning to upgrade to kernel 2.4.13 (mdk.rpm) from speakeasy.rpmfind.net.
How do I upgrade on this? Do I still have to change from my default runlevel 5 to
single user mode (runlevel 1)? What is more appropriate rpm command in upgrading my
2.4.8 to 2.4.13 kernel, the rpm -ivh package_name or rpm -Uvh package_name? If
I'll issue the command of:

# rpm -ivh or -Uvh package_name

do I still need to configure or something or it will automatically set up?

Thanks for your help.

God bless you...

[newbie] Problems with cable modem

Hi:
I'm looking for some help. I am running Linux Mandrake 7.2 on a Pentium

ethernet card. Mandrake lists the card under the config menu but I don't
seem to be able to configure it for some reason. The Ethernet card is from
SMC Networks, WZ Card 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Card and the cable modem
is a Motorola SurfBoard SB4100. Any idea what I should do about this or how
I may get it configured so that I can access the internet through Mandrake?
Thanks in advance.

From personal experience, I have to agree with Tom here. Everytime I've kept
my /home folder, and migrated/upgraded to a newer Mandrake version, I've had
problems...that were always fixed by backing up all my important stuff, and
doing a full and clean install, including formatting -all- my 'Nix partitions.
Like Tom said, YMMV... ;-)

PR I'm no expert on Wine and wine debugging, but I would suggest you
PR download the latest CVS builds from http://wine.dataparty.no . These
PR will always be the latest version every day. And they are easy to
PR download/install. I have had them running with no problems (though I
PR still can't open all the programs I would necesarily like to). I have
PR ehard of people running starcraft successfully with wine, but have never
PR played any games myself.

PR Good luck.

PR -Paul Rodríguez

Yes, forget about the mdk wine rpms. The ones coming with the default
MDK 8.1 are not working, and dont waste your time trying to fix it.
Just remove the wine and wine-devel packages, and install a wine
 package from wine.dataparty.no  or linuxeasy.com/daily .

The rpms in wine.dataparty.no do not have opengl support compiled in.
You can play starcraft with them, but no opengl games. I have sent an
email to the maintainer, maybe he will fix it. But if you dont wat to
wait, you can get the source from the same site and compile it on
 your own.

On the other hand, there are rpms at linuxeasy.com/daily . These ones
support opengl, but they dont seem to be updated for a few weeks,
since winehq anounced it as a usable version. (11.01 I guess)

I have the same setup here, and have seen this error. For what it's
worth(which ain't much)..I suspect it has something to do with the kernal
patch which must be downloaded from the win4lin site in order to work with
8.1 a corrupted download perhaps. I'm using win4lin ver. 3.0 btw.

My personel fix for this was to uninstall win4lin and go again,I may have
re-installed 8.1 as well somewhere down in the process but I'd suspect that
the 8.1 install is probably ok.

Re: [newbie] very very very basic question about ls

2001-12-02 Thread Anuerin G.Diaz

hi navin,

from what i gather this is what you want to do:

you have a directory like this

   a-b
-c-b
-c-d
-c-d-b

and you want to change the permissions of all instances of b (sort of they fill a
certain naming requirement, right?). if this is the case then you can use a recursive
script that i got. it goees something like

   #!/bin/bash

#note that this script is stored as $HOME/bin/recscript
   # $1 is the target directory

   cd $1
chmod +x b # or whatever files in there

   for entry in `ls`
   do

 if [ -L $entry ] then
#this is a linkfile so I dont follow
 elif [ -d $entry ] then

$HOME/bin/recscript $entry
 else
# regular file. do whatever you want. you can even put
# the chmod here if it would be cumbersome above
 fi
   done

   #end script

ok so it may be a little brutish but it gets the job done (like removing core files,
*.class files before archiving, and that sort). feel free to use it as you please.

ciao!

permissions with chmod +x to directories. It workds but not for
subdirectories. It is very cumbersome to go into each subdirectory and do a
chmod +x. And I do not want to do chmod -R +x * - for obvious reasons.

Now I was trying to cook up a small script which would go into each directory

Can anyone please solve my problem with the chmod OR with the ls.

[newbie] gnomeppp pppd daemon dies

2001-12-02 Thread erylon hines

I haven't used gnome ppp before (I use kppp), but I was forced to not install
kde on a system because the machine has 3 small hd's, the largest is 600M and
the other 2 are around 200M or less. So, since the smaller footprint is
Gnome, and since the Gnome panel works with Xfce (my favorite small footprint
gui), I decided to install it. Setting up the dial-up has been problematic
because I'm not familiar with the interface. As far as I can see the setup
is correct, however it appears that I have a permissions problem. This
problem is not confined to the one Gnome-only system, however--the same error
occurs when I attempt to use gnome ppp instead of a working kppp dial-up on
other machines. Anyway, I hit the connect button on gnome ppp and
immediately a crash message appears that the pppd daemon died unexpectedly.
My log files show only that pppd 2.4.0 started by eryl, uid 501 followed by
failed to open /dev/modem: Permission denied, followed by Exit. The
error message is identical on both the Gnome-only machine and the machines
with a working kppp.
Can some Gnome guru out there (I know you're on this list) PLEASE tell be
what I have misconfigured, and why it's only a misconfiguration with Gnome
ppp.

Thanks,

eryl

Where are the apache permissions placed?

Re: [newbie] apache public_html help needed

2001-12-02 Thread Michael Viron

In order for apache to be able to access the directory, you must have a
minimum of permissions 0711 on all directories above the 'public_html'
directory. 'public_html' must be at least 0755 permission, and all files
underneath need to be at least 644.

(0711 == user read / write / execute, group execute, other execute
0755 == user read / write / execute, group read / execute, other read /
execute
0644 == user read / write, group read, other read).

If you still have problems beyond that, take a look at the error_log file
under /var/log/httpd that apache uses.

[newbie] Mount error during boot (aka: no more Mandrake :-()

2001-12-02 Thread Charles Darcy

Hi,

When I try to boot LM8.1, I get these errors:

mount: error 22 mounting reiserfs
well, retrying read-only without any flags
mount: error 22 mounting reiserfs
pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
kernel panic: no init found. Trypassing init= option to kernel

The kernel needn't panic, I'm doing a good enough job for the both
of us (:-).

Luckily, I was about to do a full re-install of LM8.1, and had just
finished all the preliminary backups. The only unusual activities were
the copying of several very large (650MB) files from Linux to windoze. I
also made a LM8.1 Install disk in windoze, whose floppy properties
showed '0 bytes used', but when I looked in the folder itself, the files
appeared to be there.

So I no longer have a Mandrake system. Windows still works (I'm in
it now *ugh*), and I wonder if it might have been involved with the
problem. Before I began the install (from HD, with the ISO's on the
windoze FAT partition), I left windoze to do a check of the LM8.1 ISO
md5sums in Linux, which was when the trouble struck.

I decided to try the install anyway. DiskDrake complained that it
couldn't read the partition table, continue at own risk and showed
only a single 'hda' partition covering the whole 15GB disk. Not willing
to risk losing the windoze partition, I aborted the install.

Can I repair whatever damage has been done ? I tried to boot with a
LM8.1
boot floppy, but with no success.

If I try a full install with the dodgy partition table, is there a
chance I will lose my windoze files ? Is my /home partition gone (I was
intending to keep it intact during the install) ?

As you can imagine, any help will be *greatly* appreciated.

thanks,

Charlie.
