[newbie] komba2 dependencies
hi, i have downloaded komba2-0.72-1.mdk.i586.rpm ( i forgot if this is from the cooker or from the stable branch). using rpm -iv --test i showed that it needs libpng.so.3. a quick search in rpmdrake failed to yield a package containing this so file. i did a search in rpmfind.net and got the libpng3-1.2.0-3mdk.i586.rpm package which i have installed together with komba2 without any problems. the problem is that komba2 keeps on spewing up this message upon start-up libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.0 libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.12 libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.0 libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.12 libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.0 libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.0.12 libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.2.0 and a bunch more. the application runs but whenever i use it to mount a share i get a segmentation fault. i think it is safe to deduce that the problem is in the libpng that i installed. the question is where do i get a compatible libpng.so.3? i currently have my internet connection cut-off (only allowed during lunchbreaks 8-( ) so i have to rely on you guys. thanks! -- "Programming, an artform that fights back." === Anuerin G. However, in 8.0, the software installer used to do that automatically (i.e. when more than 1 disk involved in a software install, the installer used to open the tray in which the expected CD had to be placed. Re: [newbie] staroffice 6 install
Just to rule a line under this - I have now successfully installed. The problem was a couple of corrupt downloads. Sun have published checksums for them on the news group for staroffice 6 beta, so I recommend that anyone installing checks them after downloading. It seems that corruption - at least the type I saw - results in some sort of loop in the installer which can fill up your disk. Depending on where you are installing, that can be nasty! /Brian On Thursday 06 December 2001 1:05 am, you wrote: > Just a quik question, here. Why use StarOffice when Openoffice runs much > better? [newbie] Network question....I think.
Hello again, Okay, I'm new to the Linux world but want to become dangerous. I am also new to the world of Networking, but I'm still building my courage in that field! I have a dual boot system up and running with Win'98 and LM 8.1. On the Win'98 side I have my machine networked with two D-Link DFE-530TX+ cards with the wifes machine across the other side of the room. She has Win'98 installed also. I have the printer connected to her machine, and we have Internet Connection Sharing setup also. I want to be able to print to the printer, access her computer, and share the Internet connection from inside Linux Mandrake 8.1 here on my machine. Can this be done? Someone told me to go buy a big book on Samba! I told him to go stick it, real men don't dance! Where do I start??? Thanks Mick Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Well Google will provide much more info, but I believe their are some. The ones I've seen were worm specific tho. Example is last year when some (like ~10) Red Hat 6.x servers were infected with the 'li0n' worm. Out of curiosity, I d/l'd the script an took a look at it, even ran it. It was basically, IIRC, just a system search for a few specific files, and if found it prompted you to remove 'em. > > there is a market there for them if someone was to release one.,. > they could probably use their existing scan engine with a special > pattern file update for them.. > Frank If there isn't an all purpose generic rootkit/worm/trojan app, I suspect it's for lack of demand/need. In the case of li0n, there was a security update from Red Hat six months before the worm appeared. So only sloppily administered systems were vulnerable. Which is almost always the case with Linux and open source, as possible exploits are discovered and fixed before any exploit exists. If systems are compromised, it's the users fault. Much the same as the introduction of closed source, binary only drivers and software into a Linux system is the users responsibility/risk/fault. M$ OTOH, goes to great lengths to try and hide/censor any vulnerability info for their OS's and software, and fixes rarely appear till after the vulnerability has already been exploited. Somethings are very slow, to never fixed. M$ just call's those items 'issues'. So users are SOL, and only at fault if they're not aware that M$ products can't be secured, but naively think they are or can be. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/22614.html -- Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay, USA Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] PReemptive Strike #2: Memory usage
civileme, Thanks for the explanation -- very helpful and understandable! Could you carry it one step further and explain a little more about the use of swap. When I reboot Linus (Mandrake 7.2) on my system with 128 MB RAM (and 300 MB swap), initially there is some unused RAM and no swap is used. As you describe, gradually (not very long actually), almost all of my memory is used and then I start to see swap usage. The swap usage gradually climbs -- right now I'm at about 190 MB used -- is there a point when I should start to worry about swap usage? RE: [newbie] PReemptive Strike #2: Memory usage
Here, here! This needs an entry in the FAQ's for LM. This causes so many misconceptions that people normally post the "memory leak" questions at least once a week. Re: [newbie] staroffice 6 install
OK - here's an answer to my own question. Sun have published checksums for all the files on the newsgroup for the beta program. Turns out that two of my files are bad even though the byte count is right, Downloading /Brian On Wednesday 05 December 2001 9:00 pm, you wrote: > I know many people on the list are using the staroffice beta, so I'll ask > here because I haven't set up to participate in the news group specific to > this. > > When I attempt to install, the directory into which it's writing grows to > 2.2GB then it fails always on a file called ladder.wmf > > The installer assumes the disk is full, but it's at less than 40% used and > none of the other disks are much higher. Schwebel Paul, regex is a geek-speak for regular expression. what it referes to is a search function used in Unix/PERL/C/C++ and other high level languages, both interpreted and compiled to find alpha-numeric string patterns. since i'm most familiar with the way PERL does it i'll show you an example for PERL. regular expression == s/pattern/replace s = substitute /pattern/ = what you're looking for /replace/ = what you want to replace with once you've found the pattern s/a-z/A-Z/ ( this regex would change everything in lower case to uppercase. Pattern-matching Operators -- m/pattern/gimosx m = matching /pattern/ = the pattern being searched for to be matched /gimsox = the operators to be used to dictate the terms of the matching search modifire | meaning -+-- g| Match globaly i.e., find all occurences i| Do case sensitive patter matching m| Treat string as multiple line o| Only compile pattern once s| treat string as single line x| Use extended regular expressions this is how it is explained in O'Reilly "PERL in a Nutshell" Desktop Quick Reference. With bash scripting and Unix needs it's much the same but does vary according to application. it would be best to get to know exactly the needs of the application, but this is the basic idea of what regex is. -- daRcmaTTeR =/\=??? |%C++ Registered Linux User # 186492 "We love and desire the things most that will kill us!" [newbie] staroffice 6 install
I know many people on the list are using the staroffice beta, so I'll ask here because I haven't set up to participate in the news group specific to this. When I attempt to install, the directory into which it's writing grows to 2.2GB then it fails always on a file called ladder.wmf The installer assumes the disk is full, but it's at less than 40% used and none of the other disks are much higher. I am guessing that one of the download files must be corrupt, but which one is the question? Does anyone have any other insights or know how to look inside these .bin files to see which one might be screwed up (if indeed that's the problem)? thanks in advance /Brian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Shuting down Mandrake causes auto-restart !
Hi, I have installed Mandrake at home on my PC, along with windoze98. I am using the gnome desktop. Everthing is okay, EXCEPT when I shutdown the machine, it closes Linux but then auto-restarts (like windoze when you ask it to restart) ;-( The only way I can safely turn off my machine is wait for the machine to auto-restart, enter windoze (rather than Linux) and shutdown from there! Is there a setting (somewhere) to disable this feature ?? I look forward to your help. Colin Thomas Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Fed up with trying to get gnomeppp to work, I installed the RedHat rp3 dialer which works flawlessly in Redhat, but I can't figure out the permissions to get it work in Mandrake. I can get it to run, minus the full applet functions, as root, but not as normal user. I've searched and searched for an answer, but to no avail.
