dovresti entrare direttamente in modalità testo.
O non ho capito esattamente la domanda?

Vuoi partire direttamente in modalità console, senza interfaccia grafica?

comprende l'installazione generale? (mi sa di no!)

Qualcuno sa come aiutarmi?
Ciao a tutti e buona giornata.

http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html#Database

[newbie-it] Aggiornamento dalla 9.0 e... altre domande!

2003-03-31 Thread Paolo T.

ho seriali solo usb e pcmcia.

Grazie infinite a tutti quanti

automaticamente vedere i cambiamenti.

Comunque dovrebbe bastare cambiare l'fstab in effetti.

nell' aggiornamento dell'hardware.

[newbie-it] Scuse + consiglio

2003-03-31 Thread Gaetano

automatico e mi dimenticavo ogni volta di levarlo (me ne

accennato all'inizio.

Ciao

Gaetano

Thanks so much. That installs it, huh? Cool.

When you download a .bin package you have to make it executable before you can
run it. Right click in konquerorProperties.

Having to manually make a downloaded file executable is a protection against
attack by worms or viruses.

BTW: Any file name in linux may be executable. They do not have to end in
'.bin'
Also where possible try to use RPMs instead of binary installers. The reason
being that your RPM database will be accurate as to which applications are
already installed. It is also harder to uninstall a application installed as
a binary executable. Popular applications like Sun Java and Netscape 7 are
available as RPMs if you look in the right places.

Thanks so much. That installs it, huh? Cool.

When you download a .bin package you have to make it executable before you
can run it. Right click in konquerorProperties.

Having to manually make a downloaded file executable is a protection
against attack by worms or viruses.

BTW: Any file name in linux may be executable. They do not have to end in
 '.bin'
Also where possible try to use RPMs instead of binary installers. The
reason being that your RPM database will be accurate as to which
applications are already installed. It is also harder to uninstall a
application installed as a binary executable. Popular applications like Sun
Java and Netscape 7 are available as RPMs if you look in the right places.

Thank you, Derek. I was wondering why I was getting the message permission
denied when logged as root. I was installing Java and they only give it to
you in bin format in the place I was directed by Netscape. Maybe I didn't
look in the right place, but I was mainly concerned with downloading the

If you upgrade 9.0 to 9.1 you'll still have the 9.0Nvidia kernel around you
boot with now.

That way you can get the 9.1 kernel working with nvidia at your own pace
knowing you can fall back on the old working one. There isn't a real nvidia
problem, just some extra work 'cause propietry drivers aren't on the Download
CD's. Find them at nvidia, mandrake-club or wait for the boxed set which will
include and install them automagically.

Good luck,

Just don't format your /home partition. If you've not set a partition
aside for your /home, backup everything in your /home directories, blow
out the entire thing, and start fresh.

Get the latest NVidia drivers (ooNVidia is soo nice) and

Watch Rincewind.

Look at him. Scrawny, like most wizards, and clad in a dark red robe on
which a few mystic sigils were embroidered in tarnished sequins. Some might
have taken him for a mere apprentice enchanter who had run away from his
master out of defiance, boredom, fear and a lingering taste for
heterosexuality. Yet around his neck was a chain bearing the bronze octagon
that marked him as an alumnus of Unseen University, the high school of magic
whose time-and-space transcendent campus is never precisely Here or There.
Graduates were usually destined for mageship at least, but Rincewind--after
an unfortunate event--had left knowing only one spell and made a living of
sorts around the town by capitalizing on an innate gift for languages. He
avoided work as a rule, but had a quickness of wit that put his
acquaintances in mind of a bright rodent.

As someone else discovered recently. Upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1 does work, but
if you are using the closed source Nvidia drivers, the old drivers from 9.0
will not work in 9.1 and as a result X will be broken until you reconfigure
the XF86Config-4 file.

Since you are quite new, I would suggest the simplest course of action is to
do a new install (but without formatting your /home partition if you have
one)

9.1 will then come up working with the open source 'nv' driver.
You can then install the closed source 'nvidia' drivers from Texstar's site. I
have posted recently on how to add Texstar as a urpmi source.

I have not tried it myself, but I hear Texstars Nvidia RPM will do all the
configuration file edits for you.
Texstar also has RPMs to install java, flash, and RealPlayer
I have not tried them because they I use the ones from Mandrake Club

You can find which RPMS a urpmi source has by using Mandrake Software Manager
to show rpms 'by source repository'

When installing Texstar RPMS you will get a signature error This is because
RPMS can be signed with a key to prove they were made by the person claiming
to have made them. You can either ignore the error, or install Texstars
keyring you will find here

what the FS was when the partition was created and used.

Also, following some crashes and unfortunate recovery

Then you have a bung install, simple as that. Linux
 does not
crash...repeat after me, does not crash, I have been
 using it for 2
years, so I know (others far longer, and they agree
 with me). The only
way it would is if you were trying some exotic
 kernel or beta software
 or similar.

:), I can't argue with this ...bung install ... I
don't feel I did something wrong during the install as
there was not much I could've done. Linux can freeze
or lock up, I've experienced it myself and I've heard
others say that too. Of course it has always been some
apm related stuff. I don't think I'm doing anything
exotic :).

 very

much e.g. suspend or hot swapping of my cdrom

floppy ain't working to the same extend as with
Windows (sometimes after wakeing it up, display
wouldn't get in sync at all etc etc), fonts in

Sounds like an XFree/Video card problem to me. Pop
 in Knoppix and try
the same thing, it may configure your video better
 than Mandrake does,
it has on some of my boxes.

 There

is still a lot of software I need in my day to

the same hassle as getting help for MS issues.

 Um, no, I disagree.

Sorry, I know everybody is trying to do best they can
but nobody is gonna die for you if you're in trouble,
right ... either way most of the time you're on your
own.

Martin

When I buy a PC it comes with Windows and I dont

 have

 to pay anything extra, right?

Yes you do, it's bundled in with the price (ie.
 Windows Tax). Buy a
whitebox and save between $100-$600 depending on the
 bundle.

   So ... what's the

 point

to do format c: and go for Linux?

If you still don't know all of the benefits, I'll
 post them again at the
 bottom of this email.

Hope I didn't upset anybody, just like to hear

 your

 opinion.

 Ok, you got it.

 Cheers

 Jason

PS, My PERSONAL reasons for using Linux/OSS:

Freedom - the freedom to use, modify and in general,
 play with my
software with a level of transparency simply not
 available with Windows.

Modifiable - Being able to modify most things on my
 computer through
simple, text editable text files, without the
 worry/hassle of a
 registry of any kind.

Value/Cost for performance - in my experience, Linux
 and OSS offer a
price for performance return that Windows doesn't
 even come close to.

Community - I like being part of a community of my
 choice, rather than
being a slave to a company in Redmond that uses my
 net's back channel to
report my usage behaviors and buying decisions - all
 for my own supposed
 benefit.

Helping others - I can help others by introducing
 them to Linux for
almost no cost without feeling like I am

Ok,

so let's take your your's by the horns and give win2k something to worry
about.

First we'll need to know what Mdk version you installed. I'm betting 9.0 cause
you're mentionning lousy fonts in Mozilla.

Then what laptop i.e. make, cpu amount of RAM.

And what exactly did you mean by hot swapping of my cdrom with

Of course mileage will vary on different hardware but as you didn't mention an

[newbie] Replace Metacity with Sawfish on 9.1?

2003-03-31 Thread Keith Christian
The Sawfish window manager does not seem to be in the list of packages
shipping with the 9.1 download edition.

1. I see that Metacity is now the default WM for Gnome, is there any specific
technical reason why Sawfish was displaced in favor of Metacity?

2. Should I want to install Sawfish as the default WM is there a good
procedure written up somewhere on how to do it? Or is it as simple as using
RPM to remove Metacity and installing Sawfish from the RPM's instead?

Thanks,

==Keith

Hi Toran,
How are you using konqueror to extract the tar? If you mean using konqueror
to read and extract a tar archive via cut and paste, you will often get
'expected directory, found file' errors. Always open a terminal and tar the
archive via the command line; this way you will also be able to use the
arguments as you see fit.

Dear Mister Language Person: I am curious about the expression, Part of
this complete breakfast. The way it comes up is, my 5-year-old will be
watching TV cartoon shows in the morning, and they'll show a commercial for
a children's compressed breakfast compound such as Froot Loops or Lucky

essentially the same claim if, instead of Froot Loops, they put a can of

Not really - it's a kludge or a cf to get Sawfish running - but what
you CAN do is to run gconf-editor and find where it has the wm in the
Windows-like registry - then run the Session Manager, and find
Metashitty in the list of startup programs - replace that with Sawfish
(of course, AFTER downloading and installing Sawfish) with the same
running defaults, then open a terminal and do:

killall -KILL metacity ; wait 10 sawfish

...and if that chokes and pukes, just restart Gnome2 and you should have
Sawfish as the wm - the first few boots of Gnome2 will be flaky, but
after that it should stabilise a bit...

use mc

midnight commmander

type mc in an xterm or console..

then browse to the tar or tar.gz and press enter..

there are two panels.. left and right..
have the opened tarball in the left and the target directory on the right..
press F5 to copy from the tarball to the target directory..
works flawlessly and with no typing or params to remember..

mc can do the same thing with RPMS, as well as installing or upgrading them.

Hi Toran,
How are you using konqueror to extract the tar? If you mean using konqueror
to read and extract a tar archive via cut and paste, you will often get
'expected directory, found file' errors. Always open a terminal and tar the
archive via the command line; this way you will also be able to use the
arguments as you see fit.

2003-03-31 Thread m
It's IBM T20 P3 700MHz, 256M RAM, 12G HD, Mandrake9.0.
What I meant by 'hot swap' is replacing cdrom by
floppy drive in T20 bay on the fly (there is just one
bay so you can have either cdrom or floppy drive in).
I found on www.linux-laptom.net this ain't working but
you can first suspend it, change drives and wake it
up. It works but ... sometime after wake up LCD is out
of sync so I switch to other console (ctrl+alt+f1) and
even there I see screen devided to 3 section
vertically and has prompt 3 times. When I try to
switch back to KDE, I either find it ok or still out
of sync. The same happens when I suspend it by closing
LCD few times during a day if I have to go somewhere.

 win2k something to worry

First we'll need to know what Mdk version you

you're mentionning lousy fonts in Mozilla.

Then what laptop i.e. make, cpu amount of RAM.

And what exactly did you mean by hot swapping of
 my cdrom with
floppy ain't working to the same extend as with
Windows (sometimes after wakeing it up, display
wouldn't get in sync at all etc etc), they're
pcmcia or USB devices or what?

Of course mileage will vary on different hardware
but as you didn't mention an

high to come out on top.

[newbie] gpm causes mouse lockup after X run once - both 9.0 and 9.1

2003-03-31 Thread Guy Rouillier
(I apologize if this comes through twice - it got bounced back to me as
undeliverable, so I'm trying again...)

RedHat 8.0 is able to use gpm (console mouse) without a problem, but
Mandrake doesn't like it. If I enable it, after the system boots up, I
can go into X one time, and the mouse works. Exiting X and then going
back in, I have no control of the mouse. It's there on the screen, but
I can't move it. If I exit X using ctrl-alt-backspace and kill gpm, the
mouse is freed up. So I edited services and turned gpm off again.
System is dual Pentium 233MMX.

[newbie] How to restrict access to users using winscp2

2003-03-31 Thread Stephen Jeppesen
Before I go too far and mistakenly allow somebody to delete files off my
server, is there a way I can restrict access to certain directories for
someone using winscp2?

I have so far created a user account and given that user a password (in
which I will show him how to change his password using putty first)
and now I want to only allow this user to have read only access to two
separate directories - and no access to any other directories (/
including!)

The same two directories are shared between Win and Linux clients using
smb and nfs.

Win clients (smb) have read only access and Linux clients (nfs) has
read-write. What restricts read access using ssh though? hosts.allow
does not appear to control access to individual files/directories.

I have a feeling I should create a sshusers group, but not too sure
that will solve what I am attempting here.

TIA

If someone is using SSH to access the box, it should hold true that the
user would have the same perms as if they were local. You can create a
particular group for this (or other SSH users) and restrict access that
way - that should do the trick, mate...

RPM's, You can choose Debian-based Distro. Is apt-get so powerful why
many distros I have seen at Distrowatch.com using RPM's ?. Only few
distros are Debian-based such as Libranet, Xandros. Sorry too many
asking. As a newbie, I need to learn a lot.

 Hi Folks,

I know this is a wide open, there's-no-real-answer question,
but what is your favorite shell these days?

Way back, i liked tcsh the best, but i get the feeling most
 people use bash.

 Any suggestions?

 thanks,
 huff

Re: [newbie] HELP-BIOS can't recognize new HD

2003-03-31 Thread Ian Trickett
The latest beta BIOS for the P5A and the P5A-B will recognise large hard
drives. I'M running one of each with 40Gb Maxtor discs (Under W98) with no
difficulties.(other than the MS related ones!)
The BIOS is No 1011.005 and can be downloaded from
http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P5A

Be warned that the ASUS site is probably one of the most annoying that you
are likely to come across - it seems to be designed to hide the information
you are looking for and each page takes an eternity to load! If you can
find your way into the German FTP site things go much quicker. There's also
more to choose from.

Todd, another option be to get an add-on pci ide controller card.
Since they operate with there own bios they would be able to bypass the

You can find them online for $25 or less.

[newbie] KDE and Gnome hangs

2003-03-31 Thread Bobby Patel
I did a fresh install of 9.1, and then I get prompted for a
username/password and sesison type I would like to use.
The sesison type choices are KDE, GNome, IceWm, failsafe, and defualt. The
only things that work are failsafe and IceWm. When I try to login with KDE
or Gnome, the cursor turns to a busy cursor and the background is the splash
screen and I can hear the hardrive reading and writing, but this goes on for
more than my patience (which is 20 mins).

I went through IceWm and through the system configure tools and installed
all packages under the Graphical Environment (KDE, GNOME) (45 MB in all) .
But still the same problem.

Any ideas? I'm totally new to installing linux, so I'm totally lost.

[newbie] trouble with locale/fonts

2003-03-31 Thread Vahur Lokk
Hi!
I happen to live in a corner of the world that does use latin alphabet but
also does add quite many letters that are specific to our language
(Estonian).

9.1 seems to have broken support for this locale:
- KDE is mostly OK, except for some apps
- Fluxbox menu has no special letters at all, in most cases just one letter is
missing, in some cases whole word after this letter is gone, thus making the
menu unreadable.
- in Gnucash I can enter everything as I like but my old datafile has lost all
special letters and reports do not show them anyway.

I read that 9.1 uses UTF. Maybe that is the problem? How to change it?

Also, fonts in KDE are really beautiful but GTK apps look very bad.

Wahur

NVIDIA has announced an automated shell script which will automagically
check your machine, select and install the right drivers. See

I haven't tried it but a friend at work who is on day two of his linux

 executing the script.

 Good for Nvidia!

I reckon if it's that easy, I won't trust it. Going to write my own
driver for their card in assembly code which should take about two years
of time.
