[newbie] 10.1 sound volume 'problem'

2004-09-28 Thread Azrael
I just did my first fresh install of 10.1 (keeping my former /home), and
everything is working well, except for an issue with the volume.

In xine, or mplayer, when I try to change the volume, the volume does
not get quieter or louder. If I use the gnome volume panel applet,
ditto, can't change the volume. Also the gnome volume control, none of
the sliders seem to control the volume.

I have a sound-blaster live card, and it is using the snd-emu10k1 driver
module.

Can anyone offer suggestions, advice?

[newbie] Verbatim USB Drive 512MB

2004-09-28 Thread Phil Savoie
Hi All,

I can't seem to get the USB drive/stick to be writable. the fstab entry for
this is:

none /mnt/removable supermount
dev=/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,exec,--,umask=000,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,dev,codepage=850,suid,kudzu

0 0

The umask is set to 000 but when I try to write as a user or as root I get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] removable]# pwd
/mnt/removable
[EMAIL PROTECTED] removable]# cp /etc/fstab .
cp: cannot create regular file `./fstab': Read-only file system

Why is this? It's awfully frustrating especially since it was recognized and
configure during the boot process.

Any insight would definatley relieve my stress level

Thank you

Phil

Comment out all the lines for your usb-stick in fstab. Reboot your system one
time. If the stick is recognized correctly, and it probably will be, and
your new entry for it is added to fstab by Harddrake/kudzu, go to the MCC and
turn off Harddrake--uncheck the box for starting on boot. Reboot. If the
stick is still working you can leave Harddrake off, unless you install some
new hardware. Harddrake is a cool tool, but I never leave it on once I get
my system working because it can mess up and discover hardware that I already
have installed. It is especially bad about re-recognizing USB components.

As for your CD/DVD--aren't those scsi emulated?? I haven't got one, but I
thought that DVD drives were /dev/scdX not /dev/hdX. Either way, you may
have the wrong dev number.

RE: [newbie] Club iso vs. Download iso

Hi there,

I would hazard a guess that the mandrake club CDs have slightly
different splash screens during the installer (ie the static images that
are displayed while installation is being done.) and also I would guess
that there are hdlists for CDs 4-5 aswell.
Perhaps these small differences may account for the different md5sums?

I don't know exactly which programs are required, such as

I read some and also saw a rndc errror when shutting down.
  I read up

I'd also like to add that from the control panel all my networking
info looks to be set up how it should be. I have a FQDN as the
hostname, 2 IPs for my DNS servers and my IP, Gateway and
  Subnet Mask.
All that looks right to me.

I did read the docs. I read the How-Tos and all that, I'm just dumb
enough to not find the answers I am looking for.

   Thank you!

I'm not quite in the clear as to what your setup is but in my
  case setting the
firewall/gateway as nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf sufficed

Frankly I never use the control panel, just type :echo nameserver

Thanks for the reply John, though I am afraid it wasn't too useful for me :(
I am not concerned with the volume being too loud or too quiet. The
problem is that I am unable to change the volume in mplayer or xine to a
reasonable extent. I am not sure which exact 'volume meter' is being
changed when I use mplayer/xine volume control, but I can't put it to 0
and have no sound. The change is very little, and only on one channel.

Yes I can use alsamixer to change every conceivable volume item. But I
don't want to resign the rest of my life to having the volume set at
that level.

Indeed, using alsamixer only the 'Wave Surround' item seems to do the
job I want.

So I guess the question, is how do I make the mplayer/xine/anything else
volume controls manipulate the 'Wave Surround' item rather than whatever
other item they seem to be controlling.

The whole volume thing was not a problem in 10.0, so I don't know
exactly why 10.1 is different in this respect, but I'd like to resolve it.

thanks again, and thanks to anyone else who can offer a suggestion

in English, but can't find how to switch it to English. How do I do
 this?

I just had the same problem with a fresh Mdk 10.1 install. I presume that it's
the new version of OO that comes with 10.1 that is the problem. Have you
installed updates since the last time you used it?

Anyway, I don't have a solution yet either. I was trying to guess my way
through the configuration dialogs to set it back to English, but no luck yet.

Thanks for the reply John, though I am afraid it wasn't too useful for
me :(

I am not concerned with the volume being too loud or too quiet. The
problem is that I am unable to change the volume in mplayer or xine to
a reasonable extent. I am not sure which exact 'volume meter' is being
changed when I use mplayer/xine volume control, but I can't put it to
0 and have no sound. The change is very little, and only on one channel.

Yes I can use alsamixer to change every conceivable volume item. But I
don't want to resign the rest of my life to having the volume set at
that level.

Indeed, using alsamixer only the 'Wave Surround' item seems to do the
job I want.

So I guess the question, is how do I make the mplayer/xine/anything
else volume controls manipulate the 'Wave Surround' item rather than
whatever other item they seem to be controlling.

The whole volume thing was not a problem in 10.0, so I don't know
exactly why 10.1 is different in this respect, but I'd like to resolve
it.

thanks again, and thanks to anyone else who can offer a suggestion

Hmm,
Well, in that case you seem to be saying that you are only getting maybe
2 channels out of 4 or more ( you have suround sound ?) in which case
it's likely a sound driver configuration problem.

You need to determin the sound card and chip and whether the website
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ that helps people install and
configure sound has anything to say to achieve that.

I know that I have had a similar problem with my MD10.0 OS in that my
Mobo sound chip which is a 5.1 sound channel chip doesn't work too well
with my 2 channel stereo speakers because I have been unable to combine
the 5 channels into 2 and as such I'm only geting a certain distorted
level of harmonic output, not really noticeable with system sound sets,
but very noticeable when playing a quality audio CD. I know that in the
windblows OS's you can pass a command to tell the chip to combine channels.
The question really is whether the same is possible in linux, maybe ?

Maybe yours is a similar problem ?
Just a thought

I have Mandrake 10.0 installed, with all available updates.

Anyway, I don't have a solution yet either. I was trying to guess my
way through the configuration dialogs to set it back to English, but
  no luck yet.
Well, I know a smattering of German, and there's nothing in the menu
dialogs to control the language at all. There must be something else
 somewhere.

Ron, here's what I've done to solve the problem.

 1. I removed all of OpenOffice entirely.
 2. Using my Mdk 10.0 cd, I selected OpenOffice.org-1.1.1 to install
from scratch using Mandrake Control Center.
 3. Before clicking on `Install', I examined the available files, and
what had been automatically selected. I found that the i18n package for
German (de) was automatically selected, but not the one for English, so
I manually selected it.
 4. I Clicked on install.
 5. After the install completed I tested it by starting oowriter. It
started in English, as it should.
 6. Next, I exited oo, and used Mandrake Control Center to install
updates. It showed that OpenOffice.org-1.1.2-8.100mdk and the library
rpm were available as an upgrade, so I selected them both and clicked on
Install. It showed 5 packages total were actually installing, (those
two above, an English help file, and two i18n files.)
 7. Next I tried oowriter again, and this time 1.1.2 is starting up in
English, just as it should.

My conclusion is that if your copy of OpenOffice is starting in German
instead of your system's default language, it's probably due to a
missing i18n file. Try this to see what you have installed:

rpm -q OpenOffice.org-help-de OpenOffice.org-l10n-de \
OpenOffice.org-help-en OpenOffice.org-l10n-en

I now get the following response to the above command:

package OpenOffice.org-help-de is not installed
OpenOffice.org-l10n-de-1.1.2-8.100mdk
OpenOffice.org-help-en-1.1.2-8.100mdk
OpenOffice.org-l10n-en-1.1.2-8.100mdk

If you don't see the last file with the `-l10n-en-' part, then try
installing it. Same for the `help-en' file.

I consider this to be an install issue: on install your local language
should determine which i18n files to install rather than defaulting to
the programmer's personal language preference. Perhaps a German
programmer did this as a slap in the face to English-language
programmers whom are guilty of consistently ignoring this important
point. (I often hear of programs defaulting to the English language in
systems set to use another language - it's usually a programmer's fault
when this happens.)

Hi folks.

I'm stuck with this one. I'm trying to make gdesklets work 'round here.
I've tried gdesklets' 0.26 rpms for mdk 10.0 and when I tried to start
gdesklets server it hanged.

I've tried 0.30 and server did work but sensors' didn't (0.30 is for
10.1).

Now I've compiled 0.26.2 and I've tried running it with :
gdesklets
gdesklets start (it's something like that in 0.30)
gdesklets --display=:0

I've tested this on simple clock and calendar displays.
Now I'm stuck.

I've almost forgot. When I've tried running it with start there appeared
some message saying that the screen (free translation from polish) or
display cannot be added 'cause it doesn't exist.

Some suggestions onthe frontend:
rekall - probably your best bet
  knoda - also good
kexi - still in early developement but very promising

While most db frontends on Linux require a db server in the background like
mySQL, postgreSQL or Firebird, some frontends now come with support for
embedded db's like sqlite and xbase.

Helix Player only plays open codecs, RealPlayer 10 plays the proprietory Real

As players, there's not much to either of them.

As others have mentioned, MPlayer and Xine both play Real if you install the
Real codecs from PLF.

It should take care of *any* logfile. Lot more complicated than just
setting a cron job to delete the file if that's all you want to do, but
good to know how to use (been meaning to learn myself, which is why I
suggested it, not because I'm an expert at it or anything).

Well, got logrotate setup to archive the old .xsession-errors file and
create a new one, very easy, however, the new .xsession-errors doesn't get

 Hi folks.

I'm stuck with this one. I'm trying to make gdesklets work
 'round here.

When I've tried running it with start
 there appeared
some message saying that the screen (free translation from polish) or
display cannot be added 'cause it doesn't exist.

I have had this running before, im not at my computer atm but I think
the first time you run gdesklets you have to tell it to run a display as
well something like gdesklets calendarwhatitis os something along
those lines. It then adds the display to the gdesklet window for the
next start. When I get to my computer I will send the proper command if
you havent already figured it out.

does not get quieter or louder. If I use the gnome volume panel

I have a sound-blaster live card, and it is using the snd-emu10k1

Can anyone offer suggestions, advice?

John

I have a sound blaster live (platignum), it is 5.1 and I have 5.1
speakers. And it worked perfectly on every version of mandrake I can
remember (i.e. 9 onwards). Really is weirdly annoying

I am assuming that you want to burn CD's wityh the downloaded files.
If you are using Mandrake linux and have K3B installed when you click on a
ISO file it should automaticaly open in K3B if that does not work right click
the file and ckick ofen with and select K3B. K3B should automaticaly detect
it as a ISO file and make the correct adjustments to the process.
Make sure that you manually adjust the CD burning speed to 1/2 the burning
speed of your CD burner or 8X witch ever is less. SLOWER IS BETTER for
burning ISO's.
K3B also has a menu that you can scroll down after youn select a ISO file
and K3B opens. If you scroll down the menu you will find that K3B has run
MD5sums. Check to see that the output from that matches with the MD5sums
figure that was downloaded with the ISO images.
Needless to say if you used windoze to download things will be a bit
different but 1 of the windoze CD burning utilities should handle it 1 way or
another.

   Good luck
Enjoy 10.1

[newbie] Adventures in 10.1

2004-09-28 Thread John Wilson
Hi all,

There's an amazing lack of screaming about 10.1 CE which is very promising
indeed.

I've downloaded it and shared out till I've had the time to update which is
today.

The installation went very smoothly with everything setting up beautifully
with the exception of a networked printer and I already know how to fix that,
I hope.

One immediately seen disappointment, though not a big one, is that as near as
I can tell CD 5, which someone said would have KDE 3.3 on it, doesn't. The
KDE as installed is a mixture of KDE 3.2 and 3.3 and seems to work just fine.

Most packages don't seem to all have the 10.1 identifier on them. A lot still
show 10.0 and a lot don't have it at all. Not a problem just an observation.
Might make things interesting when OE comes out but I'll deal with that then.

Mandrake Update comes up with a list of alleged update mirrors, none of which
either exist or work. Not sure what is up because Mandrake Update says they
exist and the Club says they don't. So I tossed in a 10.0 OE update site in
the hopes that that will catch something. I'm starting to get used to
Mandrake Update being borked but this is getting a bit tiresome, you know?

Now comes the fun part and trying it all out. Except, once again, for the
update mirrors problem, it's an excellent job and everone involved needs to
be congratulated.

Now if Warly can just leave the mirror structure in peace for a while. :-)

There are two ways:

Use session management. In KDE you can save your session by setting up the

2) drop a symlink(shortcut) to the app you want to start in the
