Sometimes I've seen strange results when not installing as root (just due to permission problems), but this pretty much rules that out. I seem to have more recent versions and I also have Mandrake 10.1 community. I suppose that could be making a difference also. I could remove the later versions of the C compiler and install your versions. Would you suggest that? - Jack Sometimes it depends on what version of gcc your kernal was compiled with. On Saturday 16 October 2004 10:08 am, Boyi Zeng wrote: Hello, Yesterday I tried to install mandrake linux 10.1 to my notebook. The installation process is smooth. But I got problem at the startup after installation. The error message is like that: checking root partition: fsck.ext3: unable to resolve 'LABEL=/' I had windows XP in my notebook before. Now I used Grub to boot both systems. The configuration of grub is default, and there is no such string as 'LABEL=/'. Is there any one know what the problem is? Thank you Hi Boyi... You're saying that the grub configuraion file (menu.lst) has no reference to 'LABEL=/'? How about /etc/fstab? Typically, the root directory is mounted in read only mode first, then remounted in read/write mode. If it's trying to reference a label in fstab that isn't actually on the partition, it would certainly cause this problem. First, check your fstab file for something such as: LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1 If that shows, then it means it's trying to reference the boot partition by the label. You might have to figure out which partition is actually the boot partition, and then you could either: A) Change the line in fstab to read: /dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 (just for example) B) Set the label on the partition: # e2label /dev/hda5 / or # tune2fs -L / /dev/hda5 To see if the label was actually set (or what it currently is set to), enter: # e2label /dev/hda5 (or whatever you believe your root partition is) My default installation of Mandrake 10.0 Official made use of the /dev path instead of the label (which I would assume is much safer). I am not sure why yours went sour like that, but maybe you'll be able to fix it wihout reinstalling Mandrake... -- Take care, Randall Hobbs Programmer - System Administrator - Chip Castle Dot Com, Inc. [newbie] Trouble with konqueror again.
I have a task to retag approx 50 disks of mp3 files this is due to a poor download technique and various download patterns. The basic problem is konqueror's response to changing disks. When a disk is changed previously the display would change to reflect the new disk contents. That dosent happen if the old disk has a folder say 'jazz' then the new disk has a folder labled 'jazz' when the folder is clicked it usually reflects the contents of the disk. But if the contents are transfered to HD and retaged then some files are shown with a lock. When you try to access these files there arnt there (dont exist) which they shouldnt be there names were changed. Question is why dosent konqueror accept the new name? [newbie] Does Epson Perfection 2480 Photo work with Linux?
Hi all, I'm planning on buying a scanner for my Mdk 10.0 system. Most Epson scanners seem to be well supported by the Sane project (www.sane-project.org). Support for the plain Epson 2480 model is described as Good (CVS), but the 2480 Photo model isn't on the list. Does anyone here have any information? Alternatively, what are some other scanners of comparable quality and price? TIA, Björn Olsson Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Moving System / Upgrading.... Help!
Aftenoon :) The time has come. I am finally in a position (technically) to upgrade this computer (Mandrake 10 on a P2-300mhz PC (384mb ram, 25gb Hdd, CRRW) to the chassis of an AMD1300 (384mb ram, the rest transfers over). Just need a bit of guidance and advise before I continue... Please :) Part 1. Now. I heavily use Kontact, Konqueror, Kopete, and occasionally Mozilla. I'm working at backing up and moving as much as possible into a storage area (hard drive or CD) while I do the change. What else have I missed? All personal files will be moved over to storage anyway that I can. But I don't want to lose any email. Obviously the filters will change anyway, and I'll have to setup spamassassin again! Part 2. Spec. The following spec is the new machine. Can anyone see any problems that may present itself ahead of time. It's about a year old, but all should be recognisable hardware by now (Please!) The information was stripped from Belarc Advisor. The host hardware is currently looking after a soon to demise XP installation. Re: [newbie] Installation problem: unable to resolve 'LABEL=/'
Hello, Thanks for your reply. I reinstalled mandrake, and choose LILO as the boot loader, and then it worked. Since I installed Linux from hard disk. there seems to be no method for me to edit the menu.lst or the fstab. Anyway, the problem is solved. Thank you. On Sun, 17 Oct 2004 07:40:32 -0500, Randall D. Run the file like so: ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --add-this-kernal This will add your current kernel to the setup, and it will generate a new NVidia driver file. After that, go into init 3: # init 3 Then run the newly created file: ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1-custom.run This will install the driver, and all you'll need to do is modify the XFree86Config-4 file to load the 'nvidia' module. Hi Randall I cant seem to get it to build the new driver. I do ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel and I get permision denied no matter how I do this as root or user. [newbie] Gaim-Fixed Problem
The fix is disappointing. I urpme'ed the mdk that urpmi installs, then dl'ed the gaim-1.0.1-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm from sourceforge. It installs and runs properly as far as I can tell. At least I can login now. Thanks to the person who suggested sourceforge in the first place. It would have saved me another couple of hours of mdk frustration had I listened. On Sunday 17 October 2004 10:04, Hoyt Bailey wrote: If your machine is like mine and you have a single cdrom/dvd drive, then Mandrake may have only created the /dev/cdrom link rather than the /dev/dvd link. You can fix this by creating a symbolic link in /dev from /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd as root ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd When I do the above I get a file exists error, and in /dev the file is '/dev/dvd@'. Then your system is NOT like mine. I usually only get one device created and that is cdrom. You can change the default settings for Mplayer, Xine, etc to use /dev/cdrom instead of /dev/dvd or you can create a symbolic link from /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd. However, if your system already has a symbolic link to /dev/dvd, then this doesn't apply. -- Bryan Phinney Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
