Yeah, theoretically both should work. Sometimes I've seen strange
results when not installing as root (just due to permission
problems), but this pretty much rules that out.

I seem to have more recent versions and I also have Mandrake 10.1
community. I suppose that could be making a difference also.

I could remove the later versions of the C compiler and install
your versions. Would you suggest that?

Sometimes it depends on what version of gcc your kernal was compiled
with. If you can figure that out it might help to switch to that
version.

Many people know a great deal more about NVidia drivers than I do. For that

You do have a file called /dev/dvd?

If not try creating one. (or actually a symlink)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] bnl]$ ls -la /dev/dvd
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 30 okt 17 12:22 /dev/dvd -
ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

I created the one above, I think as root.

ln -s /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd /dev/dvd

then run ogle again.

To check that noting else is wrong run ogle with path to dvd as in

ogle /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

or if you have ripped a film to disc

ogle path/to7dvd/VIDEO_TS

I had windows XP in my notebook before. Now I used Grub to boot both

string as 'LABEL=/'. Is there any one know what the problem is?
   Thank you

Hi Boyi... You're saying that the grub configuraion file (menu.lst) has no
reference to 'LABEL=/'? How about /etc/fstab?

Typically, the root directory is mounted in read only mode first, then
remounted in read/write mode. If it's trying to reference a label in fstab
that isn't actually on the partition, it would certainly cause this problem.
First, check your fstab file for something such as:

LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1

If that shows, then it means it's trying to reference the boot partition by
the label. You might have to figure out which partition is actually the boot
partition, and then you could either:

A) Change the line in fstab to read:

/dev/hda5 / ext3 defaults 1 1 (just for example)

B) Set the label on the partition:

# e2label /dev/hda5 /

or

# tune2fs -L / /dev/hda5

To see if the label was actually set (or what it currently is set to), enter:

# e2label /dev/hda5 (or whatever you believe your root partition is)

My default installation of Mandrake 10.0 Official made use of the /dev path
instead of the label (which I would assume is much safer). I am not sure why
yours went sour like that, but maybe you'll be able to fix it wihout
reinstalling Mandrake...

I think the sky is blue because it's a shift from black through purple
to blue, and it has to do with where the light is. You know, the farther
we get into darkness, and there's a shifting of color of light into the
blueness, and I think as you go farther and farther away from the
reflected light we have from the sun or the light that's bouncing off
this earth, uh, the darker it gets ... I think if you look at the color
scale, you start at black, move it through purple, move it on out, it's
the shifting of color. We mentioned before about the stars singing, and
that's one of the effects of the shifting of colors. -- Pat Robertson,

[newbie] Trouble with konqueror again.

2004-10-17 Thread Hoyt Bailey
I have a task to retag approx 50 disks of mp3 files this is due to a
poor download technique and various download patterns. The basic
problem is konqueror's response to changing disks. When a disk is
changed previously the display would change to reflect the new disk
contents. That dosent happen if the old disk has a folder say 'jazz'
then the new disk has a folder labled 'jazz' when the folder is clicked
it usually reflects the contents of the disk. But if the contents are
transfered to HD and retaged then some files are shown with a lock.
When you try to access these files there arnt there (dont exist) which
they shouldnt be there names were changed. Question is why dosent
konqueror accept the new name?

The following is the permissions on the file in question:
-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] cdrom]$ ls -la
total 58554
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 Dec 31 1969 The_Poor_Orphan_Child.mp3/
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2667216 Aug 28 2002
The_Spirit_Of_Love_Watches_Over_Me.mp3*
And /etc/fstab
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto
umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

[newbie] Does Epson Perfection 2480 Photo work with Linux?

2004-10-17 Thread Björn Olsson
Hi all,

I'm planning on buying a scanner for my Mdk 10.0 system. Most Epson
scanners seem to be well supported by the Sane project
(www.sane-project.org). Support for the plain Epson 2480 model is
described as Good (CVS), but the 2480 Photo model isn't on the list.
Does anyone here have any information?
Alternatively, what are some other scanners of comparable quality and
price?

TIA,
Björn Olsson

[newbie] Moving System / Upgrading.... Help!

2004-10-17 Thread SME Server Admin
Aftenoon :)

The time has come. I am finally in a position (technically) to upgrade this
computer (Mandrake 10 on a P2-300mhz PC (384mb ram, 25gb Hdd, CRRW) to the
chassis of an AMD1300 (384mb ram, the rest transfers over). Just need a bit
of guidance and advise before I continue... Please :)

Part 1.

Now. I heavily use Kontact, Konqueror, Kopete, and occasionally Mozilla.

I'm working at backing up and moving as much as possible into a storage area
(hard drive or CD) while I do the change.

What else have I missed? All personal files will be moved over to storage
anyway that I can. But I don't want to lose any email. Obviously the filters
will change anyway, and I'll have to setup spamassassin again!

Part 2.

Spec. The following spec is the new machine. Can anyone see any problems that
may present itself ahead of time. It's about a year old, but all should be
recognisable hardware by now (Please!)

The information was stripped from Belarc Advisor. The host hardware is
currently looking after a soon to demise XP installation.

Processor

1.30 gigahertz AMD Duron
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
64 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board

Board: Matsonic MS8308E
Bus Clock: 66 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 062710 07/15/9

Bus Adapters

SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller

Multimedia

MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
SiS 7018 Audio Driver
Standard Game Port

Controllers

Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]
SiS PCI IDE Controller

Display

NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 [Display adapter]
SiS 300/305/630/540/730 [Display adapter]
Relisys RE767 [Monitor] (14.6vis, February 1997)

Communications

SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Network IP Address: 192.168.0.7 / 24

Other Devices

USB Human Interface Device
Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
Microsoft PS/2 Mouse
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

I don't think there will be much of a problem with that. The onboard video is
not being used, the other onboard things are what are worrying me because
it's all on the motherboard :(

Cheers, Elwyn

Hi guys,
My old printer died last week so after a suitable period of mourning, I

Epson used to have a page on their website where it listed printers that work
with linux, and giving a download of the package iscan - rather like xsane -
but it doesn't seem to be there now. Perhaps iscan hasn't been recoded for
2.6 kernels, so they pulled the plug. It's definitely worth asking them. I
wouldn't expect the knee-jerk 'what's linux' reaction from Epson.

I had windows XP in my notebook before. Now I used Grub to boot both

Thank you

 LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1

I have found that the password saving function in the past few
versions of GAIM are flaky at best; with Yahoo! delete and then recreate
the account - do NOT save the password - and it should work without
flaw; I thought at first that someone was logged into my Yahoo! account,

[newbie] Needed: libtrash.so

2004-10-17 Thread JoeHill

I installed libtrash from source to work with a ROX app, and it would not work
for me. The 'make' command provided no uninstall routine, so I did something
*really* stupid. I deleted the shared libraries in /usr/local/lib called
'libtrash', assuming they were a result of the source install I did. Nope. In
deleting /usr/local/lib/libtrash.so, I can no longer run any command from the
shell. I'm afraid to even close an app or log out, only to find my system is
hosed.

If anyone knows where I can get this file, or is running 9.2 and can get me a
copy of this file, greatly, greatly appreciated.

Okay, really, I'm going to bed. Turns out that file *was* part of the source
install I did. Shell commands would not work in that particular term because I
had issued this command:

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/libtrash.so

Closing that term and opening new one, all seems well.

BTW, anyone ever get this libtrash to work? I followed the instructions to the
letter, it's supposed to create a ~/Trash dir, but no go here.

This will add your current kernel to the setup, and it will generate

Then run the newly created file:

 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1-custom.run

This will install the driver, and all you'll need to do is modify the

Hi Dan. Out of curiousity, what's the permissions on the
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run file? Do the following:

# stat NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run

[newbie] Gaim-Fixed Problem

2004-10-17 Thread Lee Wiggers
The fix is disappointing.

I urpme'ed the mdk that urpmi installs, then dl'ed the
gaim-1.0.1-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm from sourceforge. It installs and runs
properly as far as I can tell. At least I can login now.

Thanks to the person who suggested sourceforge in the first place.
It would have saved me another couple of hours of mdk frustration
had I listened.

Re: [newbie] playing DVDs

If your machine is like mine and you have a single cdrom/dvd drive,

the /dev/dvd link. You can fix this by creating a symbolic link in
  /dev from /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd

  as root

  ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

When I do the above I get a file exists error, and in /dev the file is
 '/dev/dvd@'.

Then your system is NOT like mine. I usually only get one device created and
that is cdrom. You can change the default settings for Mplayer, Xine, etc to
use /dev/cdrom instead of /dev/dvd or you can create a symbolic link
from /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd. However, if your system already has a symbolic
link to /dev/dvd, then this doesn't apply.

Problem is gaim says incorrect password when I try to check in. I

 Any ideas?

Lee,

In Linux, passwords with spaces cause problems. Are you sure that your
password does not contain spaces or strange characters?
