[newbie] Samba PDC with Win2000 clients/Any help welcomed!!!
A big Hello to the list... I'm facing this problem for about 1 week now. Trying to join the domain I created with Samba as a PDC for my 3 Win2000 clients. No joy. I've read much of the excellent documentation from Samba.org and other sites but, to tell the truth, I'm a bit confused..Having problem to correctly put the accounts needed in my Linbox so the Winclients can join the Samba domain...that's the one part. How to correctly set Samba to be a wins server to answer to netbios queries that's the second part... Any help more than welcomed Greetings ### Dimitris Ioannou-2.4.20-8/The OS that wears a hat! ### Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Hi Guys, This month, I have emailed 3 different hardware manufacturers asking if they had linux drivers for their product (I pick one product from their site and email them about it.) generally the answer in most cases is no.. but thats not the point, if we all send 2 or 3 of these emails a month,, how long would it be before they start considing their lost market?? what do you guys think of this idea??? [newbie] Rebuild kernel 2.4.19-16mdk to get ACPI support!!What am I doing wrong??
Hello Folks! Mandrake 9.0 Dolphin I've recently got an Compaq Pressario 705EA-notebook that is-, 256 RAM, 20GB hard-disk Phoenix-bloody_bios, Conexant Softmodem(I finally got it to work), and Via On Board Sound chip-it works out of the box. Only thing that drives me nuts is that system gets stuck whenever I reboot it or halt it. The screen just stays there and the only way to bring it down is to unplug it and take the battery off. I know its the ACPI support which still is experimental as I hear. I tried , after installing kernel-source RPM in /usr/src to rebuild the kernel with ACPI support included. Two observations of mine: in /usr/src there are two directories: linux (which has a kernel files allright and I suppose represents the kernel installed) and 2.4.19-16mdk directory (which also has kernel files in it. I tried in both directories at no avail. What I did: make oldconfig (to get the configuration of my running kernel) Is that right or have I misunderstood it? Then, make dep, make modules( I saved my modules directory before that) and finally make install. I got in both times a kernel installed by the name 2416-16custom. In the first case I got the message that the Kernel was too big and as a result it could boot. I had to reinstall Lilo from the CD typing rescue. In the second case it told me that the ACPI modules were in but with modprobe it just told me it couldn't find the kernel for which it was compiled for. What am I doing wrong? Re: [newbie] PPP/PPPOE and on-line woes
10 2002 23:50, / [EMAIL PROTECTED] : Try this, it might help Install linuxconf, and after you install it go there and make it detect your modem. Save, make the changes linuxconf tells you to do by pressing the button Do itand try to connect again. For me it always worked. Hope it helps Cheers Dimitris Folks, I hope someone has a solution to what may be a ridiculously simple problem. I'm using 8.1 on a Compaq Presario 1250 laptop, and to make efficient use of my PCMCIA slot, I bought a combined modem/network PCMCIA card (Lynksys). When I installed Linux on the laptop, I initially set the system to access the web through ADSL, using the pppoe software. Lately, however, I've been traveling and have needed to use the modem on the road. When I try to log on using the Gnome ppp program, I get the right noises from the modem, I get a connection (as evidenced by the noises and the flashing lights on the modem), but my browser acts as though there's no connection. I try to ping a site and get nothing. Using Mandrake's network configuration utility, the results are worse -- a quick connection that gets bumped off almost as soon as it's made, then endless automatic repeats trying to reconnect. At least Gnome gets me on once and keeps me there until I click on the disconnect button. Interestingly, on my Gkrellm monitor, the ppp0 window comes up when I'm on ADSL but not when I connect with the modem, even though ppp0 shows up in the Gnome dialer window. Using the ifconfig command, I find a ppp0 text block while using ADSL, but not when using the modem. Also, when I do a simple route command with ADSL running, I get two ppp0 entries, but get none when I'm merely trying to run the modem. I suspect the fix is simple, but so far it's eluded me! (I believe both services -- ATT-Worldnet and Verizon On-line -- assign DNS numbers on log-in) Any thoughts? Re: [newbie] 2 Q's about KWord: persistent margin settings; word count feature
Hello Alan You can create a template from a document name it something (eg.Alan for example) and whenever you open KWord it asks you which one to open A4 or anything else you tell it to open an Alan doc. from the template you just created. As for the counting of words there is an option. Go to File}Statistics and there you have it. You can adjust this option to be called by giving it a shortcut on keybord (I use Ctl+M, which is unique and not global or something like it) you can fix this by going to Tools}Configure Shortcuts}Statistics}Custom Key}Select Ctr+M or anything you like as long as it doesn't mix with something already used by the system globally or other application. Re: [newbie] windows 98 installation
Hi Graham, Winds##t have to be installed first (if we're talking about the 9X series 95,98,ME) because they need to write the boot sector during installation, otherwise setup won't continue.Something that won't happen when you install XP or 2000 or NT4 even, I think. Now, in the case that someone has already installed Linux and needs to install Win98,or 95 or ME he will face the following situation. When his computer boots it will boot only in Winblows. To overcome this he should ,before installing Winblows, create a floppy-boot disk from Mandrake Control Center and keep it. After the installation of Windblows is finished he should boot from the floppy and then the Linux will boot normally. Then as root in a terminal should be typed /sbin/lilo. That's it. Everytime the computer boots the Lilo welcoming screen will appear asking the user whether he wishes to boot in Linux or in Winblows. Somebody more knowledgeable is welcome to correct me on this but I have always understood that it is only possible to run Windows if it is installed on the first sector of the primary hard disk. Re: [newbie] Can't save StarOffice Files
Brian hello my friend, If you insist on keeping OpenOffice, that's OK, but if you want to give SO 6 another try,I have and I can send it to you, a small batch file that you put it one level up from the dir where you have new fonts to be installed in X and executes the mkfontdir and assign commands automatically, also it creates a fonts.dir.txt file that the Xfont server can use to assign the fonts to itself. Using this and following the method I pointed previously you can get SO6 to run without no problems and with Winfonts installed and working perfectly well. I can assure it's not buggy at all. I have given it very hard times writing my wife's documents(she's a journalist) and faced no problem at all, {I had to transform them later in M$Word format, put graphics in it, many pages,etc...}, so trust me it's worth it. [newbie] Audio CD,No Sound Revisited!/FIXED!!!Thanks Charles!
Thanks Charles, I opened the box just to find out that the cable that connects the audio from CDROM, well DVD-ROM actually, was pulled out from its proper place on the sound card. Pulled it in and everything works perfect. Thanks again, it seems that sometimes one misses the obvious things and starts looking in more complexed places. I read your letter yesterday. I confess, I'm a bit confused. Don't really understand what you're up to. If you're aiming to pass the message that Linux has to be a lot easier for people with non geek-knowledge, I think you've succeeded that. Now, a question: are doing this effort because you believe in this certain distor LM, or in Linux generally? Surely you have ended up very misunderstood by everyone. Not by me though, except for that first time. My friend, I believe, you are really something! Stubborn, if I may say? Don't know, maybe that's the way to pass your opinion through. Think I am myself a little. Anyway, Mandrake distro is on its way to the non-geek community. It's the first distro ever understood that common people need a simple operating system, reliable and steady to work. Civileme, may be as stubborn as you, but if you don't believe strongly in something how can you ever succeed in doing anything? In this part you are the same both of you. I'm happy you both are out there. In other cases you could be friends, though fighting all the time. I live in Greece, 30 o C temperature right now, and a very nice day. I'm working in a software company based in Windows NT 4 which everyone's using as a terminal to an OS/400. Very tiring for me since every person working there are stuck with the OS/400 telling me all the time how good this operation system is and I should stop occuppying myself with the Linux thing and everything. But I keep on, just like you keep on telling everyone your thoughts, and just as Civileme is rejecting them and disagrees with you. Wishing you a very nice day John. Hello to you Richard From what I have read visiting Mandrakes home page I understand that they really are in trouble so I hurried and subscribe myself to the Mandrake Users Club and intending to buy the new 8.2 Release to support them more. They face, I think, the dilemma of cutting out personnel in order to cut their expenses which are by far bigger than their revenues. It goes without saying, that this will affect the development of their future releases. I think everyone should support an excellent OS like LM since everyone benefits from the use of it, or it's existence, whatever you prefer. After all, the cost (60USD per year is too little compared to what one should pay when using M$ XP for instance. Regards Dimitris P.S. Re: [newbie] Answers to the Geek vs the rest dilemma.
I hope that this poisoned letter of yours comes only because you tried very hard as a Linux newbie to install and get some things working (apps) and obviously you didn't succeed in doing so. You will never make it, trust me. Never, as long as you are carrying in your back and in your mind the M$ philosophy of get things working. Obtain some, cathedral, as you name it thinking and then, maybe , things will work out for you. Think of something. If they work, they will, by far, work better than in Windows. As for the vulnerability of the Unix like systems ( I read the whole article in the link you pointed) I can assure you that it takes a hacker with balls like stone to attack at any Unix system even with the security hole mentioned in the article. There not many out there. When in M$ Window$ a 14 year old kid can run a simple script that just found in theweband just make a whole network based on NT servers to kneel down. [newbie]
I have just installed (after downloading the rpm's) the KDE 3BETA2, doing urpmi --force since I was not able to satisfy the dependencies and got it installed in /opt/kde3/bin. Problem is, I had already KDE 2.2.2 installed and KOffice 1.1.1 too. Now, I can't login to KDE 2.2.2 anymore. Only to Gnome. Of cource I can start KDE 3 from cmd with kde3 command. But the KOffice already installed does not start anymore. It crashes. I reinstalled it but nothing. I would be very grateful if someone can direct me telling me how I can (details won't be bad at all), correctly install KDE 3BETA2-should I remove KDE 2.2.2 first and then install KDE3 or I could have both without removing KDE 2.2.2. If there is no other way I'd like to stick to the KDE3BETA2 and also have it as my automated login environment and of cource have my KOffice 1.1.1 working. After installing KDE3 I got the messaged "Remember to add /opt/kde3/bin to your path". How can I do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thank you Dimitris IoannouDo You Yahoo!?ÁðïêôÞóôå ôçí äùñåÜí óáò @yahoo.gr äéåýèõíóç óôï Yahoo! Mail.

Go t! o http://www.mandrakestore.com If I understood correctly you need to find a way so your Linux-box can read your lost partition. If you already have a windows partition */mnt/windows, /mnt/win_c or whatever, boot to windows and use Partition Magic 7.0 to scan your partition from windows and reformat it into ext2 which is the Linux standard filesystem. When you do so successfully boot in Linux and from Mandrake Control Center or from picoing /etc/fstab add a new mount point for instance /var. If this is not the problem, then (pay attention to this), login as root look if you already have a /home file in the basic catalogue. If you do have, open the Kdiskfree and look at the mounted partitions. Dismount /home. Go to the Linux Control Center and mount your unseen so far partition as /var or as /home. If you mount it as /home you wont be able to see your data stored in the previous /home that you have dismounted from Kdiskfree even if you mount it again. Are there any otherclients for gnutella or fast track that work well. Thanks, Go to www.kazaa.com and download kazaa client for Linux. Its about 256k. I am using the 6.0 beta and Iseem to have messed up the database integration some how, or perhaps I'mjust not sure what I should look for if it is working properly. The StarOffice installer told me it couldn't find thedatabase and that if I wanted those features I should run thatinstallation.
