Re: AW: [newbie] newbie books

2000-03-21 Thread Jon Hunter

I hated Unix for Dummies! It was the only Unix book in my town and I needed
to look up some commands. After being told I was to stupid to learn the
command I was interested in and that I should go find a Unix Guru and offer
him pizza, it hit the wastecan at high velocity.

Drazenko Djuricic wrote:

It's a lot of fun to read but it can also teach you a lot.
 Meanwhile I'm a UNIX admin myself :-)
Still lots to learn, though, but with the " ... for Dummies"
books it's at least fun and amusing and gives you an easy start.
You should give "Linux for Dummies" or "Unix for Dummies" a try.

Re: RV: [newbie] 3Com 3CXe589E PCMCIA ETHERNET CARD

2000-03-21 Thread Jon Hunter

You have discovered the answer to your own question!
Use kpackage to open the RPM for the kernel you have installed and you can read
it for yourself.
Install the kernel marked kernel-2.2.14-15mdk.i586.rpm instead.

Carlos Salazar Mtz wrote:

Hi, I've been spending 2 weeks trying to install my 3Com 3CXe589E PCMCIA
ETHERNET CARD on a TOSHIBA 2500CDS with MANDRAKE 7.0, and just can't do it.
FIRST, at linux installation (when it asks if you want to configure the
net),it recognizes the card and actually it is supposed to make it work in
order to download something (crypt...) from an ftp site. It says pcmcia
probe found 1 net devices, found driver for 3c589_cs
 insmod /modules/pcmcia_core.o.insmod/modules/3c589_cs.o
... it finishes installing linux succesfully and restarts..
WHEN it tries to find module dependencies it shows nothing about pcmcia, and
when it comes up to network inicialization it says:
 network inicialization delayed...[failed]
AFTER logging in, if I run "cardctl ident" it says "no pcmcia driver in
/proc/devices", and when I run "cardctl config" it says the same thing, when
it is supposed to say something about the cards it detects.
WHAT i think is that this kernel version (2.2.14-1mdklinus) does't support
pcmcia or at list doesn't have the correct modules, because it doesn't even
 have a "pcmcia" subdirectory (/lib/modules/2.2.14-1mdklinus/pcmcia) where i
can find "pcmcia_core.o" and "3c589_cs.o" in order to run:
 "insmod [directory] pcmcia_core.o"
 What I tried is:
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o, and the answer was:
 "kernel-module version mismatch
 /lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o was compiled for kernel
version 2.2.14-15mdk while this kernel is version 2.2.14-1mdklinus"
BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT MY VERSION (2.2.14-1mdklinus) DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING
LIKE "pcmcia_core.o" or "3c589_cs.o" IN ITS LIBRARIES.

 PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Take a look at your Adapter (In my case Novell 2000
Adapter).
You are interested in IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default
Gateway, DHCP Enabled (yes or no), DNS Servers (at the top).

Okay, now open your browser and look for proxy info, if you
find any copy it down.
(Netscape is under edit, preferences,advanced,proxies,
Manual proxy configuration (on mine))
(In Internet Exploder I will not even try to suggest where
it might be, they change location like I change my sox)

Open your email client now and look for name of mail server
(Something like mail.home.net)
Open a command window again and ping the name they give,
write the name and number down!
example: ping mail
 reply from 192.168.0.50
  ping news
  reply from 192.168.0.51

If your mail server is named mail and not
mail.something.somethingelse then your provider has an ALIAS
on his DNS server and you either must use his DNS numbers or
manually put in the ip number for "mail" yourself. I
suggest you use his DNS numbers because they may change the
numbers for the alias "mail" and then your mail will stop
working. Reasons they might have to change number? Server
crash, load balancing, just because they can...

Same kinda thing goes for news.
Remember, if this alias exists it is not a real address. If
you go to another machine and try to get your mail you will
have to put the numbers in manually.

Ok, now that you have all this info boot up linux and put
all those settings into linuxconf.

If DHCP Enabled said yes then use it in linuxconf, probably
not a good idea to static your address if under Windoze it
was dynamic.

After close of linuxconf you should be able to ping your
mail and news servers by name. If not, try by number. If
you can ping by number but not by name then go back into
linuxconf and fix the DNS entries. If you can't by number
either then ping your "Default Gateway", Still no joy? Do
ifconfig and check numbers for card.

Open up netscape and input proxy server settings if any.

If you are going to use Netscape for mail and news you can
set up the servers now. If you want you can edit /etc/hosts
to make your own alias to mail and news.

192.168.0.50mailmail.home.net
192.168.0.51newsnews.home.net

Since Netscape will not let you remove the default of "news"
you might as well use it for your news servers name.

Hopefully this got it for you. You now know more then many
1st tier Tech Support people. (The ones YOU get to talk to)
Usually He/She has a database of common problems dealing
with M$ Windoze and very little knowledge of his/her own to
work with. If they are asked a question not in the database
they might call 2nd tier, who knows a little more, etc.

Are you saying that you are able to reach into the iso image and grab

 Subject: [newbie] Weird Networking Problem!!

   Hey everyone!

   OK, heres my weird story:

I have a home network, with windowz NT as a domain controller. I was
always able to get linux up and running on the network, using "linuxconf".
Well i had to re-install NT. This happened the day before my Mandrake 7
arrived in the mail. I get NT up and goin, and now I go to install Linux.
 I
set up the network stuff, and low and behold, no network!! I cant even
 ping
other computers, and they cant ping the linux box. So i figure, "Hey, it
must be Linux's fault", so i put redhat 6.1 on, and still get the same
 problem.

This has me sooo confused!! Is Linux or NT the problem??

   Please help!!!

   Thanks alot in advance!

If you can't ping the numbered address (192.168.etc) then it is not a Join the
Domain kind of problem. It is a configuration problem with the NIC. You say
other computers so I am assuming that you have checked the "other computers"
against each other (Including the new NT install) and that they will ping and
answer each other. To me this means to check the linux box.

Pinging an address (not a name) has nothing to do with M$ Workgroups or Domains.

Re: [newbie] RPM

2000-03-15 Thread Jon Hunter

That would not be an AMD 5x86 133 would it?

I have one of those in another box. Here's the deal

This is the fastest 486 chip (That I know of) that was ever made.

Your system bus speed is 33mhz but the chip itself is running 133mhz.

The name is a bit of "slight of hand" from AMD. It was put out when Pentiums
were first coming out. To the uninformed it would look like 586 (Meaning
Pentium). So if this is your chip, no you can't run mandrake. And no, you
can't just "Stick a new chip in" either. To use Mandrake you will need a
whole new system, (Or at least a new motherboard to go with the new
processor). Don't throw this thing away though, it will make a great
fileserver!

I love my old 486 because:

The one that I hand built and a Compaq Deskpro 2000 sitting side by side.

Deskpro (Compaq's "Business Solution") =

Pentium 200
64 meg ram
2.1gig Western Dig HD

Homebrew =
AMD 5x86 133 (A 486)
64 meg
1.08gig

Both running Windows NT Server 4.0 with same services running, the 486 was
faster in everything but drawing the opengl screensaver.

Had I upgraded the graphics card it probably would have kicked butt there too.

Your next suggestion might be to see if the mouse is connected, but I've

  james

"mouse@" is something called a symbolic link, its not actually the
device but it points to it. Mine points to /dev/psaux 'cause its PS/2.
if you "ls -laF /dev/mou*" it will show the device it actually points
to. MAke sure that device is listed in /dev. Then make sure that device
is what you're actually hooked up to. If its serial it will be
something like ttyS0 or ttyS1 for com1/com2 respectively. I think the
mandrake install programs usually setup XF86Config to the actual device
and not the sym links...but I've never used 6.1 just 6.0 7 so I cant
 be sure.

To double check the exact protocol, there is a list in the man page "man
XF86Config" about a dozen pages into it. Make sure the
spelling/capitalization is correct. Note that all these protocols might
not show up in configuration tools.

Did you _ever_ have a mouse in console mode? This could help narrow
down the problem to X specific or the whole Linux box in general.

XF86Setup should be in your path, but if not it is probably located in
 /usr/X11R6/bin. "locate XF86Setup |more"
could help you find it. You could also use "xf86config", which is a
text mode tool and less user friendly. Both have their strenghts, the
latter is better for setting multiple resolutions and color depths. But
for just changing mouse settings "vi /etc/XF86Config" would be my
 choice.

I don't think that you would get this error if the mouse wasn't
physically plugged in. You just wouldn't be able to move the pointer.
You could have done something inadvertantly last time you were in X, and
just didn't notice it until you tried to go back in. Take a good hard
look at the /dev directory and your device line in XF86Config. It
really won;t hurt to double check the protocol either. Let me know if
 you get it.

Hi Ronald!

Ignorance is ok, we all start somewhere :)

If you are using a floppy to boot this please check which
image you used.
I think you need to change your boot disk image, sounds like
you are attempting to do a network install. As for the
numbers:

NFS stands for Network File Server (Usually a Unix / Linux
server)

The numbers a normal disk based install would ask for are

DNS (Domain Name Server)
an IP Address for the box
netmask (255.255.255.0) probably
gateway (your router)

ipconfig /all would give your these three but not an NFS
number

Almost true, What I would do if I had a clean disk is start the linux install
just enough get a shell by doing alt F2 - F6 until I found a console that would
allow me to type

fdisk /dev/hda

I would make a 16meg linux partition at the front of the disk. and then I would
reboot and use Windoze fdisk to make my WinDOS partition as big as I wanted it
(Fat32 doesn't care about the 1024 cylinder boundary) Set up windoze and then
set up Linux. When it asked me where to put lilo I would then put it in
/dev/hda1.
NOT the Master Boot Record. You want to set the 16meg linux partition to mount
at /boot.

I say almost true because lilo wants to be within that first 1024 cylinders.

I think I *finally* figured this out. Here's my hypothesis:

Note my 2 different prompts with different machine names... the first
was from a konsole window and the 2nd was from the virtual console. I
had my machine name automatically change when I log onto the 'net (via
kppp). I log onto the net from a x session I start from "localhost",
but then the name changes to "fdialup185". When I then try to open a
window my x server (presumably) sees the request is coming from
something other than localhost and basically says "get the hell out of
here, you can't use that!" I then quit X, and restart it as fdialup85.
It then expects requests from fdialup85 and subsequent requests to open
 a window are granted.

The thing is that I don't know (can't remember) if it always failed on
me right away or all the time I guess time will only tell if this
fixes it. I'm interested in hearing any thoughts from anyone in the
meantime, like whether I am making any sense here or am just overtired.
;-) Does anyone else have their machine name change?

This still doesn't explain why kpanel died, or other little things in
kde like the viewing of archives... any ideas there?

Man, it's midnight already, I need to get up early, and I still haven't

Is there a way to tell zip to treat all shortcuts (links) as only links,
  not as files and directories?

Example, when I go to zip a directory that has multiple links it adds
all the directories and files under the links as well. This makes for a
rather large zip file since I can have 10-20 copies of directories and
files because of all the links I have. I basically want to make mirror
copy of a directory structure in a zip file. That way I can restore it
in a directory on my 27 gig hard drive and move the necessary
directories, sub directories, files, and links to the 4 gig hard drive
(thus restoring what was messed up or lost).

When I am done, I will have a zip file for each directory on the root
level. That way I only would have to restore what I need. I need to be
able to restore all the links as links, not as actual files and
  directories.

If this is not possible with ZIP, could you possibly suggest a good free
utility that I can use to accomplish this. I just want to use zip since
I can also open the file on a windows based machine upon need and also
  for the space savings.

  Thanks in advance

Don't know about zip, but you can do this with tar and tell it to
compress so you get a smaller archive (you hope) than the actual data.

 Something like:

 cd /27gig/week1backupdir
 tar --same-owner -czvpf week1.gz /whateverdir /anotherdir /etc

Check out info tar. I don't remember if man tar has all the switches
and what they do. I believe p is the switch you want, but check the
 docs.

 Ron,

When asked for your IP address during install linux wants the address to
be give to that machine not those of your ISP's. There are a set of IP
addresses that can be assigned for a private network however I don't
recall what they are off the top of my head. You should be able to
search the 'net for them though.

192.168.0 though 254.1 through254
255.255.255.0

my box is 192.168.0.1

also open is

10.0 though 254.0 though 254.1 though 254

There are others but I think the first is enough...

If you are on a private network with a M$ win98se or W2k box with "Internet

252 other addresses in that range.

Re: [newbie] cannot mount ZIP

2000-03-10 Thread Jon Hunter

Here's a couple of things you can try.

fdisk /dev/sda

now hit p to "print" to screen the partition table. Preformatted zip disks
come from the factory with a primary fat partition of 4, hence /dev/sda4.
However, now that we know a little history of the disk we can see that the
previous owner HAD to change to partition table on the disk and then
reformat it. Since it was done with linux he may have put the partition
number to anything he had a fancy to, and then formatted it to anything he
wanted to. Ext2 comes to mind... Once you figure out which partition he
changed it to, try:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/zip

Change the 1 for whatever you saw it was in fdisk. If this doesn't work,
use the -t and try it with ext2,vfat,msdos etc.

 to my card ?

5.How about the clocks ? Mysterious world isnt't it ?

Why is SO difficult to write an extensive guide on this ? I've already
check the Linux Documentation Project.AND my books.AND the FAQs

The best results with mandrake 7 is an 800x600@60Hz/256 colors.I won't
get blind by using my screen in such a refresh rate...so please help.

Another note : I'm currently setting up dialup Remote Access into my
works network.Thought a Linux server would be cool so I've tried a few
minutes ago find related informationbut no luck.

{Question : would YOU recomend an OS that you can't install properly at
 home to your boss for Remote Access ?}

Any help will be greatly aprpreciated :-)

Re: [newbie] mail server

2000-03-08 Thread Jon Hunter

Time to throw my oar in...

Cable modems give you an address via the DHCP protocol. Some of the numbers
they give you are:

IP address
DNS server ip address
gateway

The Domain Name Server address they give you gets you on Their Server. Their
server has an alias for "mail" and "news" to point to their mail and news
servers. Netscape comes with an account set up for mail at "mail" and news at
"news". You can open a command prompt on your WinDoze box and type ipconfig
/all to get all the numbers given you (Win98, Win98SE, Winnt, Win2k). For
Win95 you must use winipcfg.

Once you get this number, you could put it into /etc/hosts

If you have noticed your netscape will not allow you to erase the server
"news", you can use this trick yourself to just use the unremovable default to
make your connection (Rather than have two servers listed).

Without the DNS server, there is nothing "Local" about anything on a LAN.
Your machine won't find anything without an address server of some kind. Even
if this is only an entry in /etc/hosts.

Here is a funny: On one of my Mankdrake 7.0 boxes my /etc/hosts file reads

127.0.0.1localhost.localdomain

and when I start X it complains it can't find it's own address. Simple fix
but I find it amusing...

I'm not sure what you mean by this either.. But in my netscape in Windows
it just says "mail", for news it says "news". It's because with cable
modems it's similar/the same as being on a LAN and you wouldn't need a DNS
appropriate address to access the "local" mailserver..

When you say "mail" you mean "mail.netscape.net" right?

  Greetings again,

Here's yet another problem. I'm an @home user. In WinDOZE the mail
server in Netscape is merely "mail". Well I've tried this in Netscape in
Linux to no avail. Anyone know what to do?! Currently I am using
netmail.home.com as my mail server, and it works mostly, but I'd like to
use the "intended" one if possible.. Thanks!

Re: [newbie] re : Explain this if you can

2000-03-08 Thread Jon Hunter

An easier way to fix this is to go into KDE and use the "Desktop Switching
Tool"

or

instead of using Startx use KDM

I love KDM as it allows you to browse through the different managers and
choose the one you want for that session. It remembers your last choice and
displays it in dropbox for the next time you log in. Log out and your machine
is locked 'til an authorized user logs in, and it has a shutdown button right
there.

i had the same problem. i e-mailed mandrake support to ask what was
going on, the answere they gave was. If you want mandrake to boot up
with a different GUI use the custom install.

now i could be wrong but wasn't the point of mandrake the integrated kde
  interface?

anyway, i think there is a program called startkde that will, well,
  start kde.
but i don't think the server install actually installs kde anyway so you
will have check and see if it did then you may have to install the rpm's
  off the install cd.

Re: [newbie] FTP install issues

2000-03-06 Thread Jon Hunter

Two suggestions:

1. Try ne2000 for your nic driver
or
2. Copy the kernel off the disk onto your small DOS partition and use LoadLin

 Here is the situation:

I got an old laptop from a friend and am trying to get Linux running.
The real issue is that the floppy/cdrom bay is in NO way hot swappable.

So, I was trying to use a ftp install, but the NIC isn't in the pcmcia
 support disk. (linksys etherfast 10/100)
So, I tried copying the cdrom boot disk onto the HD, but of course, that
 won't boot

I have a fair bit of investigating as to how to get my NIC working, but of
course, I can't compile the module until I have Linux running.

Anyone with any suggestions (other than just go buy a different NIC =P ), I
 would greatly appreciate them.

Re: [newbie] X problem

2000-03-06 Thread Jon Hunter

At the lilo prompt:

linux single

log in as root and change /etc/inittab to go init 3 (Read this file, it is
interesting)

Sounds like you are converting an old Compaq. I have one I use as a file
server. Works much better in Linux. Major crash every 3 months under
Windoze.

Hasn't crashed yet in Linux...

I just did a new install(custom, server) that's set to automatically
start X, and must have misconfigured X. The system boots smoothly, but
when it shows root login and the mandrake logo the screen goes black and
the system locks up. Reboot causes the same thing to happen again.

Is it possible or how do I get the OS not to launch X, and then how do I
reconfigure it to the proper video card(S3 Trio 3D) and monitor? My
monitor is an old Compag Presario 1500 and I'm not really sure what the
right resolution and refresh rate is, so I think setting it to standard
 SVGA 800 x 600 should work.

 Any suggestions appreciated,
