[newbie] No Modem after Bastille?

2002-02-02 Thread Mick

Hi List,
I setup the simple bastille firewall the other night. Then the next time I
logged in to KDE the Kppp dialog box was open and waiting for me! (I used
to manually click on it to open it up) It does this all the time now
(strangely) and reports an error 'cannot find modem' when I try to get
online. Even when I select /dev/modem in the setup, it still can't find it.
I tried using tty0, and tty01 etc and so, but now Kppp can't dial out for
me! Is this a side effect of setting up a firewall? I'd appreciate any help
here.
Thanks.
Mick

[newbie] Pre-download email checking in Linux?

2002-01-29 Thread Mick

Hi folks,

I want to check my email on my isp's server before I download it. I had a small
program (back in my Windoze days) that did just this and more like allowing you to
delete emails if you didn't want them etc...
If someone on the list is familiar with such a utility, I'd sure appreciate a little
pointing in that direction.
Thanks.

[newbie] Startup sound has stopped?

2002-01-28 Thread Mick

Hi list,

I am using KDE in LM 8.1. Each time I logged out I had the option checked to save and
restore session next time. Then one evening, logging out in a hurry I accidentally
unchecked it. the result was the next time I logged in my startup sound didn't play,
and all the background images were gone on the desktops. I realised I had used the
default option when I logged in.
So now the question is, how do I get the startup sound to play again, (I liked it) and
do I have to set the background images and so forth again also? Or, is there a way to
access a log file lurking somewhere?
Thank you.

[newbie] Security and services that are running?

2002-01-21 Thread Mick

Hi list,

Being new, and currently enjoying an installation that's up and running (even if it
did need a few tweaks here and there) I came across an article about 'Armoring Linux'.
It was all about how default installations leave a lot of unneeded services running
and provide access for 'undesirables' to wreak havoc if they so choose. This article
has kinda scared the bejeepers out of me, as I could've sworn I just said yes to most
of the default questions during (the most recent) install.
The article referenced a lot to do with the Redhat distro, and I found myself at a
loss on some of the more technical points and instructions about what to do.
So, here's my question. Where in LM 8.1 do I start to find out what services are
running? I am not using my Linux box as a server or anything 'technically heavy', just
home use with email and browsing, MP3 playing etc...
Will I need to setup a firewall? And of course, how do I start to shut off the
unneeded services?
Mick (nervously awaiting!)

Hi there,
I was just loving using Kmail as my email client, and then it started to act up. I
started having problems sending to this list, my emails all of a sudden had SMTP
errors while trying to send. A helpful individual here on the list suggested I use a
different program. There is a few to choose from in LM 8.1. So I've started using
Sylpheed. So far it's been great.
There's also Mozilla, Netscape Mail, Evolution, all waiting to be discovered.
Have fun.

[newbie] CDROM access from the icon?

2002-01-07 Thread Mick

Hi List (and Randy)

I have edited my lilo.conf and fstab files so as my cd burning software can
see both cdrom drives and use them as reader and writer.
Now when I try to access the cdrom drive through the icon on the desktop it
claims two things. First, Unsupported action list dir. Then if you try to
click on the icon again, now it really gets mad, Could not mount device, the
reported error was: mount dev/scd0 already mounted or mnt/cdrom busy.
Okay, why is this?
I was kinda hoping this icon access would be an easy way to see data on my
disks. Don't say it.I know.nothing is easy!
Any help would be great.

[newbie] Cannot get into system, how do I rescue Lilo?

2001-12-16 Thread Mick

Hi folks,

A dual boot system. I was trying repair an earlier
problem, and of course made it even worse. Now Lilo will not boot up. It gets to
LI and just sits there blinking. How do I re-install Lilo so as to access the
system again. I have tried booting into the boot cd and typing 'rescue', I can
then get to a prompt. After looking at an article about basic Unix commands I
used 'ls' to see my directories. Whoopee, I can see then 'til I'm blue in the
face. I swear I am going to take a course in basic Linux commands after I get
through this!
I did also try to reinstall the whole kit and
kiboodle, but each time I try, it gets as far as installing packages and then
just quits, with two minutes to go! The activity lights on the cdrom
drive and HD just die. I've tried waiting for ages! Nothing! I tried using the
Plextor burner as a boot device and to load the OS from but with the same
result.
Here are some tech details that may
help.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated, as I'm
kinda' dead in the water here. (Posting from the wifes machine here,
sshhh...)

[newbie] Kaj Haulrich, lost your address!!

2001-12-14 Thread Mick

Hello list,

Last week, I posted a question about getting CD Burning up and running on a
new LM 8.1 system. Mr Kaj Haulrich answered my questions and then sent me
example files to work from. To make a long story short, my Init file
somewhere on my system became either corrupt or lost. My system could not
boot up. My level of experience with Linux didn't allow me to save anything
from my setup including the files I'd saved from the CD Burning questions. I
re-installed the OS. Mr Haulrich if you read this, please send me your email
address, so I may once again setup my two CD-ROM drives for Burning.
Thank you much,
Mick Duffy

[newbie] No floppy drive, now what?

2001-12-07 Thread Mick

Hi list,

I had installed LM 8.1 last week and thought all was well. Today I went to
view some files on a floppy disk and Linux reports 'device unknown' .
Now how can this be? I thought the install procedure with LM 8.1 had
progressed so far as to make this just a forgone conclusion. A floppy drive
is one of the most basic hardware items in any machine. Oh well. Enough
bitchin' and whinin'!
How do I 'enable' my floppy drive in LM 8.1?

PS
I looked in 'Hardrake', no floppy listed.
What next?
Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Network question....I think.

2001-12-05 Thread Mick

Hello again,

Okay, I'm new to the Linux world but want to become dangerous. I am also new
to the world of Networking, but I'm still building my courage in that field!
I have a dual boot system up and running with Win'98 and LM 8.1. On the
Win'98 side I have my machine networked with two D-Link DFE-530TX+ cards with
the wifes machine across the other side of the room. She has Win'98 installed
also. I have the printer connected to her machine, and we have Internet
Connection Sharing setup also. I want to be able to print to the printer,
access her computer, and share the Internet connection from inside Linux
Mandrake 8.1 here on my machine. Can this be done? Someone told me to go buy
a big book on Samba! I told him to go stick it, real men don't dance!
Where do I start???
Thanks

[newbie] Thank you for the answers about CD burning!!

2001-11-29 Thread Mick

Hello again list,

Jeez, you guys are fast and good! Thanks so much to all for the answers on CD
burning stuff. I swear, as soon as I sent the message to the list I looked
exactly where you people all pointed to! It had already found my burner, and
so I dived right in and burned a few files using two of the three apps
listed. I must admit there is a lot of intimidating stuff in these apps, much
more so than any windoze burning app. But that's good. MS treats it's users
like dummies, Mandrake-Linux appears to know we're not!
Thanks again, and keep up the great work.
Now my next question is....?

[newbie] Re: New LM 8.0, Not much joy!

2001-06-04 Thread Mick

Hi again List,

I think the root of my problem is this clock timer error. It reads: Clock
timer configuration lost: Probably a VIA 686a motherboard: Restoring chip
configuration.
This error writes itself across the screen every few seconds. No matter where
I am. Logged in as root or user, or not at all. Even during trying to run
XFdrake. I am beginng to think I should try to install all over again.
By the way, my bios is set to boot into the cdrom drive first, but when I try
to get the install to start all over again, it just keeps booting into the
hard drive. I wonder what's the best way round that. Maybe mount the cdrom
from the prompt?
Thank you all for replying about how to shut down Linux from the prompt. I
have now become an expert at shutting down!
I think this is the devious thing about Linux, it throws you a bunch of
errors and curve balls at first and forces you to learn a few prompt
commands! I suppose it can't hurt!

[newbie] New LM 8.0 Box, not much joy! Help!!

2001-06-03 Thread Mick

Hello List,

Just got back from purchasing the new Linux box.
I got an Asus m/b A7A266, an AMD Athlon T/Bird 1 ghz. 512mb of PC-133 Memory.
I thought I was okay in the assumption that most ATI video cards would work
in Linux, especially LM 8.0, I got an ATI Expert 2000 AGP w/32mb.
The new HD is a Quantum Fireball 40 gig 7200rpm.
I then loaded up the new LM 8.0. Everything appeared to go well until setting
up the X Server. This brings up my first question about LM in general.
Why is the setting up of the X Server and the video and monitor hardware left
to be the very last thing in the line of items in installation?
>From reading problems day after day on the list it appears that this is the
main problem that arises 95% of the time during installs.
Anyway, to get back to the new install, the first error occurred after my X
didn't come up. At the prompt I ran XFdrake. The first thing I noticed was no
ATI Expert 2000 AGP in the list to choose from.
If that wasn't bad enough then came the second very annoying error:
Probable hardware bug: Clock timer configuration lost. Probably VIA 686a
motherboard. Restoring chip configuration:
This keeps coming up every few minutes. Hmm...I wonder if I shouldn't have
had chose the GMT time zone option?
And then if that wasn't enough, you'd think that after all these weeks of
using LM 7.2, that I'd know by now how to powerdown from the prompt! I have
always used a GUI login and logout! I have tried HALT, POWEROFF, EXIT, TERM,
and many other words I can't repeat here!
Please, what is the Linux command to power down and off?
Many thanks,
Mick

Re: [newbie] Tape Backup drive?

2001-05-22 Thread Mick

Okay, sorry 'bout that. I'm not sure if it is IDE or not. It's defintely not
SCSI! The data ribbon cable (from the tape drive) connects directly into the
data ribbon cable on my floppy drive. It uses QIC 120 mb cartridges. As for
the question "Have you tried using any standard devices in /dev?" well shoot
how would a NEWBIE know they were even there?? I did ask WHAT was the
proceedure for setting up a tape drive in Linux in my original post, because
I didn't know!
Now that you've mentioned it, I will go try that. Thank you for the input.

[newbie] Tape Backup drive?

2001-05-21 Thread Mick

Friends, Romans, Newbies, Lend me your ears...

I had an old Conner backup drive (Backs up onto 120mb QIC tapes) that I have
installed into my machine running LM 7.2 and Win98. I ran Hardrake and it
didn't find it, I tried installing Arkeia backup software but that won't let
me log into it? What is the procedure for setting up a tape backup drive in
LM?
All help gratefully appreciated.

[newbie] Fwd: KDE2.1 and sound

2001-03-09 Thread Mick Featherstone

I have recently upgraded to KDE 2.1 following civileme's instructions and
noting other information on the list.

I have a problem with sound:
Previously it worked fine with KDE 2.0,
I have a Soundblaster live player 5.1,
I get no sound on start up,
System sounds do not work, however directly playing the wave files works,
Real Player plays real audio files,
The microphone works.
The mixer shows 'Creative SB live, the volumes are turned up,
Trying to configure in Hardrake, the wizard opens showing the correct card
but when trying to play the sound file, no sound is heard,
I've tried sndconfig, but that gives a message which I can't remember, but
says something including modprobe and resources being used,
System sounds work in Gnome.

Help!!!

[newbie] Keyboard Problem

2000-06-09 Thread Mick Spice

Hi,
I have recently installed the Mandrake Gold Pack version of Linux, and
most things seem to be working fine.

I have two problems.
1) My sound cards is new, and not on the supported list(s). I realise that
I will need to replace this with something that is supported. Any
suggestions as to what to buy would be appreciated.

2) [and more of a problem] is the fact that system seems to think that I
have a US keyboard, whne in fact I have a UK keyboard. This makes life at
the prompt a problem :-( with no 'pipe' character readily available.
I assume that there is some way (short of a re-install) that I can fix this ?

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

[newbie] Install Error

1999-08-06 Thread Mick Peterson

I have looked through the FAQ's and cannot seem to find my problem -- but it
must be common.

An error occurs during the step "install bootloader". This is on a Gateway
P5-133 with 1.2 GByte IDE Hard Drive and 64 MByte of Memory -- no unusual
hardware attached. I have tried it with no printer and no network card (it
usually has a generic NE2000 compatible). I assumed the problem was with
the partitioning -- but I have tried a number of approaches and nothing
helps. No windows partition on the machine.

Thanks
