Re: now way OT was Re: [newbie] semi OT redhat battles the evil empire?
I can't resist. As for what RedHat is or has been attempting I can say that regardless, of motives many, in general I mean, feel Linux-Mandrake, SUSE, etc are better desktop compared to RedHat who has pretty much just made a presents, but hardly seems to be promoting themselves as such. Here is an example. At my local mega electronic store where I get my software, hardware, and accessories Linux-Mandrake had pretty much disappeared from the shelves. RedHat dominated alongside WindowsXP. I asked why there wasn't any Mandrake and the reply was not enough demand to keep them on the shelves. Most Linux users either get RedHat or SUSE. Saw two kids when I went for mounting brackets and cabling. They had RedHat and LM 8.2 which the store decided to sell. I heard them talkng about it. They were about mid teens. The first said to the other to the effect. Dude, go with Mandrake for everyday stuff and some ***. RedHat for server and some serious **(these two parts I couldn't make out as I was eaves dropping) then go with RedHat. It gives the impression that RedHat seems more heavy duty. Like buying a $200 accounting software just to balance your checkbook. Like I said I just couldn't resist. - Original Message - From: shane [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, May 11, 2002 1:35 PM Subject: now way OT was Re: [newbie] semi OT redhat battles the evil empire? Re: [newbie] Mandrake's financial situation
Every Linux distro I have and used has been bought. Primarily because downloading any of them is not feasible with my dial up connection and the users who want to go online. If I had a high speed connection then, honestly speaking, would download Linux for free. The donation part is a little goofy side, again speaking frankly, so I tend to believe that my purchasing 4 Linux distros from $40 and up is helping. Please don't get offended with my remarks on the donation part as a way of contributing to the Open Source Community. I can imagine having to work hard and be paid by donations would make me and maybe many others very insecure with their financial future. Its a harsh world and money is a part of it. Still, though this is a bump in the road and don't see it effecting Linux in the whole. Linux-Mandrake on the other hand is having business woes which every company who wants to compete is and has to go through. The management will have to adapt and make the necessary changes to keep alive and eventually grow. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Mandrake's financial situation
You make a very interesting point and I think I can follow up with an example. I live near a huge electronic store called Fry's Electronic. I have purchased everything from my laptop, the parts for my own gigahertz tower, two monitors, iMac, Linux-Mandrake 7.0-7.1 and 8.0, WindowsME and XP, digital camera, cabling up the whazoowell needless to say I get all of my toys there. Up to the release of Linux-Mandrake 8.0 they had stockpiled most of the well known Linux distros. Last trip I was told when I asked about where and when the 8.1 would be available and realized that Red Hat had dominated the shelves. Corel was gone so was Linux-Mandrake and Suse had been cut to a 1/3. BSD had now joined the fray. The store clerk told me there was no point in keeping Mandrake since there was a vast majority flocking to Red Hat and BSD had been demanded for a while. There are other stores where they are still keeping Mandrake, but they have mentioned the same thing. For the immediate area there is not much demand for it. Re: [newbie] Minimizing the cult factor
My two cents. First, Gimp is a great alternative, but more importantly a great application on its own. I have for both Linux-Mandrake 8.0 and WindowsXP. Great application. Game: Not all of us care to play them or have them on our machines. (note I am excluding simple ones like solitaire and etc.) Easy to install: I had no or very little difficulty with either Linux-Mandrake 8.0 or WindowsXP. Some troubles just involve ill prepared users. Occasionally, maybe some hardware issues which are, you guessed, hardware issues. Only the Mac is easier, but then again your paying a Mercedes premium for that kind of ease. As for the Cult Factor: I am on three user groups for Mac, XP, and Linux-Mandrake and I see nothing, but fanatics. Not all I should say, but very evident to some degree. You see fanatics for movies, games, platforms, sports, arts, music, and even foods. Met this nice guy who loves BSD and nothing but. If I mention Linux, I get earful of BSD over Linux. Occasionally, he will email me an image of his fanatic love of BSD. Last one was with the BSD devil mounting a surprised Tux. Can't please everyone. I think that IS the funny part Hans N. I got three email directly from the desk of Ms. Cleo, spam mostly, and it never mentioned anything about the attacks especially with two cousins living in Manhattan since January and my Mother who was suppose to fly this past Wednesday to Michigan to visit and return with my aging Grandmother in mid October. [newbie] Linux box for Mandrake Linux
I haven't really contributed much to this list mostly since my Internet connection is a joke due in part with the phone company screwing around with 30 year phone lines they want to rebuild to provide DSL service and on top of that the cable company is digging up old cable connection to also provide fiber optic for digital Cable TV and Internet access. I usually just read the post from others on my cellphone with Internet Access. I have avoided many troubles from others experiences and posts. Thanks to all who contribute and share. The point of this email post is I want to build a Linux only box since I want to give Linux its own home, that and the fact I love building boxes for fun. Again the point to this post is I went PC case shopping and found a case built similarly to the Apple G4 tower. The side panel flips down with the motherboard attached to it. The case is about mid size and has additionally a front door panel that conceals two USB ports and 2 mini jacks for headphones and microphone. It handles 5 PCI slots, but is typical beige colored with gray trim around the front latch door. The store was CompUSA which sells for $60-70 and has a 300Watt power supply. I hope this is of some great interest to some or maybe all. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Linux box for Mandrake Linux 2
I saw the penguin box before. I have seen two others mostly just pointed. The only that really interested me with the box I mentioned was the easy access to internal chassis. Although, thinking about it I am surprise no one has made an Iceberg looking one with a Tux painted on there somewhere riding it. Something to think about. Re: [newbie] curious ....
With all due respect I keep hearing that remark about Apple. That initially it is expensive but in the long run you save money. Frankly, a BMW and Volvo are expensive at first but in the long with the quality and safety you save money. Of course you have to be able to afford it. You either have the large down payment and make those large monthly payment or you have the credit line. I do a lot of home video editing the total cost of my own built machine is still 1/3 of what a high end Mac costs. Exclude the iMac which at their cheapest, or affordable if you like, is still a $1000 without a rebate. I don't use anything smaller than a 17 monitor since my eyes are going ka ka. The iMacs is not an appealing or an option for me personally. I like the PowerMacs but all of the ones I have seen even with rebates are still out of my range and many many people. I guess like any luxury if you willing to eat spam and bologne use the toothpaste until the tub is rolled flatter than paper than great. Just curios does anyone run Linux, without third party software, on a Mac? I saw a package claiming to run Red Hat Linux on any Mac. Just curios to see how that is done with or without a third party software.
[newbie] Bryan Tyson is right
I agree on the WindowsXP licensing deal. Utterly ridiculous. I was also amazed to hear Caldera was going the way of Microsoft with their new licensing deal.
Re: [newbie] curious ....
LOL...on the bicycle as your alternative mode of transportation. I see nothing wrong with command line but most are daunted by it and could careless if they ever learn it. I don't see the futue dealing much with command line and GUIs. As long as Linux offers what it has now without going completely GUI like Mac and Windows then its future is secured. Realistically, though if you think about it Mandrake and others won't just deliver to the this crowd indefintely. They want to tap into the larger pie of PC consumers. I keep thinking that eventually Linux will be as plain as any Window flavor. Just a an opinion please no hate mail. I have already been banned by Window and Mac newsgroups I might end up creating my own little OS just to have someone to talk to.lol By the way here is an irony. Just as I was typing the above Linux I had a bug with my wireless keyboard, literally a bug. Well, struck me as funny as heck personally.
Re: [newbie] curious ....
I think it is great and I haven't been black listed so farlol I am just expressing a thought but I am certainly not bashing Linux anymore or less than Mac and Windows. I have gotten alot out of this mailing. Even though there is the occassional upset Linux user who might interpet it otherwise.
Re: [newbie] curious .... My last comment on the subject.. Great suggestion for Mandrake.
Whoa, just to clarify my comment I meant nothing about Linux being suitable for the desktop or for the average user, whatever that might be. Just for the record I think of Linux as a much more sophisticated and complex OS than Windows and Mac. By no means do I think otherwise. It is not an easy click and go as can claim Mac. It isn't what most PC users use and care to know. I am glad it is exists as an option. But a standard would simplify Linux and create a large community among different distros as it started out to be. Now though it seems that they are all drifting apart. I have heard about this kind of suggestion and the vast majority of response are very angry in tone. I guess some don't like Linux being changed from what it is now. There are of course exceptions to every rule. Things are a little disorderly but I hope things will work themselves out.
Re: [newbie] curious ....
Well, I meant that my bug with my keyboard was litterally a bug, as in a spider crawled out from between the keys and nearly freaked me out. I did't relay that apparently since I was typing about 3:00am and half asleep. Just ot elaborate.
Re: [newbie] curious ....
I found your post very interesting. Here is my 2 cents if you don't mind an outside opinion. First, I never gave a second look at a Mac. First off at that time APPLE was on the bottom and looking like it wanted a bullet to put it out of its misery. My first PC was a HP7170 Pavilion. I was amazed on its features, of course it had only a 133Mhz Intel, 2GB harddrive but for a first timer I was impressed. It had Windows95 which I had heard about but never really gave a look since at that time the PCs were still too expensive. That Pavilion also ran HP's own interface or Operating System. Needless, to say it was a joke and I uninstalled it since I didn't see any point in keeping something I didn't want. Then came Windows98, 98SE, and currently Millenium Edition. I am not imressed but I hae enjoyed software so much that I could care less of the comments MS haters have to say about Windows, and every variation of the name. Two years ago I heard about Linux for a consumer easy to use version. I went and bought the Corel Linux as at that time I heard it was the easiest to use. I have since then learn that every loyalist of a Linux flavor believes their favorite is the easiest and best. Needless to say it wasn't easy and I never could get past the splash window. Then came Linux Mandrake's Linux for Windows. I have heard the remarks from many of you about how inferior or a bad choice. Frankly, it is not and gives a raw newbie and idea of what Linux Mandrake can offer and is all about. I agree it is not for replacing or migrating away from Windows but it is an easy taste by comparison of all Linux distros. I went the way of Linux 7.2 full distribution and partition my drive to house both Millenium Edition and Mandrake. I am happy with both and really wish there was a way to have all three OS on one machine(Windows, Linux, Macintosh) and switch through with ease. There are software but far too much complication at this time. I enjoy Linux and I have spent hours learning and playing with it, but frankly and with all due respect to others in this forum and lovers of Linux, you just can't really get any work done with it. I am either having to install patches or make adjustments every time I need to do something or want to do something. Thats the real flaw with Linux not support or application choice but you just don't boot up click click and get something to work tha easily and quickly. Many of you have provided so much help to us newbies but your past experience and with some of you with a formal UNIX education go through command lines as if they were just plain englsih(or perspective native language). Personally, I don't get excited and find command lines boring and unnecessary. With a GUI it is point and click and so on. It is not lazy or an aide to the stupid. Frankly, not everyone who has a car wants a manual transmission or work on it to make the adjustment so that car runs the way the owner wants it to. The future for Linux is in Limbo, personal opinion, and it has nothing to do with Microsoft or the ignorant comments on Linux and the Open Source. There is no standard and most hardcore users like that but there is such chaos over such a system. Sometimes hearing hardcore Linux users is like listening to the hippies of the Hasbury, if I spelled that correctly, days talk about the movement of love and peace and taking down the system and powers that be. Most are probably drivng BMW's and hold stock options with a large corporation about now. I know for the most part Linux for the the average consumer is still so so very young. The Open Source community has done wonders and have worked to bring Linux to the common user who is not interested in getting under the hood of their OS. I guess that is the point. Why does Microsoft have the largest share of the market, aside from the monopoly? The vast majority don't care. They just want point, click and go. I have read Linux newbies who have given Linux Mandrake a shot and have decided to go back to Windows and maybe Mac if I recall correctly. The first comment I hear is let the Windoze baby go back to their mindless. Its a choice and at least there is a choice now. I love Linux but I can honestly say as unbias observer Linux is not for the common person. So far all the usrs I have encountered are techies, wanna be techies, hackers(as in enjoyers of software and not a cracker) and those with a formal UNIX education. As Linux moves to become easier I think it is losing that thing that has given the rise and recognition. Still though evolution has a funny way of throwing a monkey wrench into the mix now and then. I am curious to see what the future holds for all OS. Again just my two cents I invite others opinion but not insults. Thank you
Re: [newbie] curious ....
I agree comletely, Linux is still very young and developing. My twist on the car analogy is like this Windows is the average car which the vast majority drives and get from point A to point B. There are lemons depending on everything from quality and price but they get the larger slice of the consumer pie. Macintosh is the BMW and Mercedes...etc. You pay for the high quality and since everything is included your less likely to have problems again barring any X factors like quality control and bad management. Linux and other althernative OS, whichever term you want to use, is the kit car. The old Chevy or Ford you want to tweak to run and look like you want it to. You can remove the air conditioner to boost engine performance. Get rid of manufacturer settings again to get that boost you want. Doing whatever you want to make it run, look, and feel just the way you want and to reflect your individual personality. The only problem this is a small market there are problems with making those tweaks. You can problems but the point is to make the changes you want. Macintosh and Windows don't and may never do that, personally they won't since their user base is so much different than Linux. I do a lot of home video editing. Windows sucks for this even with Windows2000. Apple is excellent for this but has a history and the experience that has given it this result, but the price is ridiculous and just out of my means. Personally, most of the Apple designed machines I find ugly especially the Flower Power iMac which I would find humilating to be seen using.lol Linux has stability and is pretty much a clean slate for developing. I do not hold any OS as my religion. I just can't see it as such but I like the open source and I like Linux. Heck, I crash Linux 3 times more than I do with Windows since I am constantly looking through and fiddling with. I don't trust Linux, Windows, or Mac but I do have hope for Linux compared to the other two. I wonder do those who prefer command line will ever move to a GUI or do they just stay in a command line enviroment within a UNIX platform since thats all they want?
[newbie] Computer Freezes under Linux 7.2 WindowsME
I just recently added an additional 512MB (2x256MB DIMM PC133) for my video editing needs. Both Linux and WindowsME recognized it and life was good and my video editing dreams were coming true. BAMM! Then Linux starts freezing up and so does WindowsME. Couldn't figure it out then I checked BIOS and realized that it was set to PC100 by default. I checked on my motherboard for jumpers but this motherboard does these changes through BIOS. So I changed it and then for a week everytime I playback one of my videos the system freezes even in LINUX! I went back to the store where I got the RAM and they told me it was probably a compatiability issue. I exchanged them for premiums and still get the crashes but this only happens when playing back any .mpeg or .avi file. Under WindowsME I am used to this but until recently LINUX never gave me that trouble nor have I seen it freeze before. Any help would be appreciated since I have looked everywhere else. Thank you
Re: [newbie] [Newbie] Linux for Windows??
I run Linux4Windows and I am happy with it. By comparison though it is nowhere as fast as a full Linux 7.2 installation on a dedicated parition. Currently, I have WindowsME on a 4GB drive and a slave with 30GB which I use for raw video, music, and still photos for my video editing hobby. I want Linux on its own drive but I am waiting after April, Taxman was very cruel to me. I haven't gotten a chance to try Linux with the Interent since I have a "winmodem" which Linux doesn't work with, with very few exceptions. When I can I will purchase an external "hardware" modem. For the most part since I run with 512MB RAM and Athlon 1GHz I really don't see much loss of speed compared to Windows but compared to Linux on its own partition well I do see a performance difference. Linux4Windows is good and if harddrive space is at a premium and you don't want to repartition it does the job.
[newbie] Installing Linux on laptopdesktop on....
Just to share this with those of you interested. On a cable channel called TechTV they will be installing a Linux OS, don't know which distro, on both a desktop and laptop on the air. The intent I guess is to give hints and or show what you may encounter trying to install a Linux distro. You can check their website for exact time since all I know is they are planning it on a Thursday and Friday next week. The shows name is Screen Savers.
Re: [newbie] Documents about Linux
I will look for it this weekend, thanks.
Re: [newbie] Documents about Linux
I too would appreciate the same documents. So far most of the ones I have go right over my head with no info on commands for me to get familiar with first before actually typing them in and sitting back to see what happens. Thank you in advance.
Re: [newbie] Penguin Case
Thats very cool apparently, Apple isn't the only one with a flair for style for the rest of us PC users.
[newbie] No mail in a week
I have read several other posts about odd stop of mail from the linux newbie mailling list. I have two accounts, msn and prodigy. I use MSN Explorer to read the list and Outlook Explorer to respond in plain text in courtesy to those who don't want HTML format. I get sporadic email through MSN Explorer but haven't seen any of the email from there through Outlook Explorer connected to Prodigy. Just curious.
Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Well, I followed the link you provided me and wrote down the info for my modem listed under WindowsME. Logged into Linux under root. I am completely new to Linux so terms like "terminal" and the like have no meaning whatsoever. Nevertheless, I did figure how to get into terminal and typed in the first command line. There I saw the info that Linux could display. But when it came to cd /root and the rest of the lines I had to type it I was completely lost. I did managed to type in the setserialcommand but the link stated to edit with "jed or a similiar editing program". I don't know if I even have such a program on my box. After all of this typing I went to see if anything worked and when I tried to connect Linux told me my modem was busy. Any further info is appreciated.
Re: [newbie] I got it working
I am not clear on this DNS. Do you mean I have to type in the configuration window the Domain Name Server as in this example. Prodigy.net Or am I missing something and need to go out and by a Mac to get a clue...lol
Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
Well, tried configuring the system to get my modem working but Linux tells me that "Sorry, the modem is busy". Apparently, I might have to breakdown and get another modem that is compatiable with Linux.
Re: [newbie] Installed ppp daemon
I appreciate the help your link although turned out to be a dead end with an error message about the site no longer existing. I was hoping, what my last sentence meant, to download any patch up or Linux driver for my modem. The modem is less than a month old and would hate to replace it just to log on to the net through Linux.
[newbie] PPP daemon missing
I finally got a Linux distro installed on my newly built system. I played with a bit and was very impressed more so that it finally installed and loaded the desktop like advertised. My problem is that I want to connect to the Internet and update 7.2 if needed. I put the CD in the tray and tried figuring out how to find ppp daemon which Linux tells me is missing and needed to configure my Internet connection. I also need help with setting up my modem. I have a Creative Labs Blaster modem and it is not listed within Linux. There is a name there but nothing I recognize. Remember I am a complete newbie I have no clue about command line within Linux or familiar with the tech talk most of you use when dealing with configuring Linux. Also on the plus side I was very very impressed on how Linux recognized and installed my HP 682C printer faster than Windows and Macintosh; this is through a parallel port connection which is why I was so impressed. The test page was very clean and although I was a bit skeptical with the problems with CUPS so many users have had. Thanks in advance.
