Re: [newbie] Kinda OT... port forwarding?

2004-09-16 Thread Cdrack

I'm not absolutely shure about windows doing port forwarding, because i did investigated for another application and didn't found a native solution. But i had success with Cygwin and the ssh.

Basicly wath i did was to use ssh over the windows box with the Cygwin version, then ssh has the ability to do port forward and also encrypt the comunication betwen boxes.

Yes you can, all you need to do is port forward port 80 on the windows
box to port 80 on the internal IP of the mandrake box.

I haven't used 2000 in a while, but I did once use it that way, and
right clicking on the network interface in question and selecting
properties is how to find the place to set the port forward.

I'd imagine google would be quite handy if you can't find it yourself.

Okie day, seems simple enough. I found some basic how-to's via google,
and supposedly got port 80 forwarded to my Linux box's IP. Problem is
it seems to make no difference. supposedly I should just be able to go
to http://[my.internet.ip]:80/index.shtml or whatever and get apache...
right? I know apache is working okay because I can go to
http://[my.local.ip]/index.shtml and it pops up with it's placeholder.
 what am I not doing?

It all depends whether MDK built PHP with freetds. If it was, when you

I am hoping to find something like QuakeMap under M$ for Linux. QuakeMap
is a utility for displaying Terraserver topo and aerial photos in a much

stores maps in case you need them while out in the field and offline.
Waypoints and routes can be imported or created and displayed on topos,
aerial photos, or aerials with topos superimposed.

I'd like to find something that runs on Linux with these capabilities.
Is there anything out there that would do this sort of job?

Re: [newbie] Hard Drive Question

2004-08-27 Thread cdrack
Hi BJ.

In my opinion the size of each partition are given
acord the use you intent to give and of course the
size of youre disk. i.e.

if you have let's say a 80 Gb Hdd. then if youre
computer is just for personal usage... the Mandrake
Linux Normal instalation will use a partition named
/ wich is the root of the operative system... (don't
get confused about the root user, that's another
thing). so into this partition can be alocated all
the other directories that the system needs like
home, var, usr tmp. But the main reason to
create partitions for this directories is to limit the
size of each one to an especific maximun size. .i.e.

/ = 20 GB
/Home = 40 GB (because is the home of each user and
have to hold the user's documents like music, imgs,
etc.)
/swap = recomended 2x RAM Memory, let's say you have a
512 DDRAM dim, so create a 1 GB swap partition.

/tmp = 5 GB 's

and that's all ... there are no especific size or
directive that any of the prior directories must be
partitions on youre hard drive, but is easier to
mantain in case of dissasters or even back up
operations. i.e.

If for any reason you have to reinstall youre Linux
box and you created separated partitions to hold /
and /home then you just have to format the /
partition and youre documents will be safe on the
other partition and ready to use after youre
instalation.

Re: [newbie] Forgot the swap partition...

2003-12-12 Thread cdrack
as you should now, the swap partition acts like an
extra ram storage... When you run applications, they
alocates them code into the ram memori, but if you
have varius applications running at the same time.
(usualy... like network handler, video
handler, database servers, and so) Each one of them
will claim some memory space to work on. and if you
don't have enough to bring them, the system will slow
down and maybe hang.

Because not all the programs work at the same time,
there are memory alocated that is not nesesary to keep
with the actual information and may be used by active
applications, so here becomes important the swap
space. At this point the SO takes the memory from the
inactive applications and places it's information on
the swap partition, feeing memory to use by active
applications. When the unactive applications become
active then the SO find's the new inactive aplications
and does the hole thing again.

The SO can use a non swap partition for this job, but
the performance will not be the same, because the swap
partition have's a diferent file sistem and method to
access to the information.

So if you are able to reinstall or install a extra
disk to use it for swap job... go on.

If you like the GUI, you can use the Mandrake Control
Center to assign the mount point or create the new
swap partition. When you finish the MCC will ask you
if you whant to whrite the changes to the fstab file.

And allso if you have created one swap partition and
if you now the adecuated code to insert into the fstab
file... go ahead. But if not, i recommend you the
GUI way.

I don't get it, if you have a line into the linux
comp and a line out then you
have to have two nic cards eth0 and eth1 in order
 to connect two cables to
that computer. If that is the case then you have
 one nic that is not
functioning. So if one is a built in to the
 motherboard it would seem that
it may need to be activated in the bios. If it is
 active it should show up
when you do ifconfig in console. Also you should
 see the active light on

yes, there are two cards, but the one built in to

is not activated, so we can just forget about that
 one. I`m olnly using

 fitday.com

I don't know of any dedicated software, probably

However, something like that should be fairly easy
 to set up in OpenOffice.

Re: [newbie] Moving from windows to linux in the enterprise

2003-12-10 Thread cdrack

Ok, from the begining is not an easy work to move from
a windows based company to a linux one, and you must
be more than a newbie to get that job.

I have like 5 years of experience working on linux,
making diferent tests, implementing database servers,
web servers, proxys, file servers, autentication
servers and moving users form windows to Linux. But
none of them was an easy thing because you are not in
a home proyect to see if it works... you are into an
enterprice and youre boss hopes you now wath you are
doing and hope no more than success from you.

Nevertheless i offer you mi help to guide you to a
scaled migration from one to other system.

My recommend is going first with

 C) Linux servers with windows desktops.

and if you solve all the users request from the
servers... then most of the job have to been done.

there are Oracle solutions for Linux servers so you
have to investigate a lot by youre selve before going
to youre boos's office to show youre solution

for an easy wine configuration, you can use the
winesetuptk programm. It have a graphical enviroment

Re: Re[2]: [newbie] Modem troubles

2003-12-09 Thread cdrack
The first thing... about the modem... there are a lot
of information about the real modems and the winmodems
(or toy modems)... and because the winmodems are not
based on standards of hardware and communications but
on them own cheap technologi... is hard to make every
winmodem works on Linux.

The external modems (real modems) are built with
hardware and software standards for communications so
if you programm a driver for the standard
communication protocol.. you can be shure it will work
with all external modems... but if you try to programm
a driver that aplyes only to some kind of hardware...
there are no wharanty that this will work with all the
hadware.

Nevertheles if the driver you found says that works
with youre specific winmodem... maybe you have to get
deeply on its docummentation or get a real
modem...

The Second thing.

Is not that MCC desn't save youre internet
configuration .. is just that you are overwriting
this.

Let's think that youre modem allready worked... and
you configure something like kppp to make a dialup
connection or any other... so if you done well you
will be connected to the internet any time you dial
and youre configuration will be saved. But if you use
the wizzard... any time you get into, will be
overwriting youre configuration.

If you need more help with any of this isues just
mail us.

Thanks for your help everyone. I ran the install and
 got a message
saying everything installed, so I assume it
 worked, although I have
no idea where it installed to. I never got asked to
 select where I
wanted it installed as I would have in Windows.

Unfortunately nothing works still. My modem is
 listed in HardDrak(SP?)
but there is now no configuration tool* button
 available for it for
some reason. I have no idea whether it is configured
 correctly or not,
or even where to go to do that.

The other question I have is, when I go into MCC and
 look in the
Internet section. I have to re-enter my connection
 details in there
each time I go in to try to get this working. It
 doesn't seem to save
my connection information anywhere. I would have
 thought that once I
hit *apply* and *OK*, those details would stay there
 and would still
be visible next time I log in and look at them.

This really doesn't work like Windows does it?! ;-)

Thanks for your help people. Might be time for yet
 another break ...
 I'm finding this incredibly frustrating!

Re: [newbie] How to get Wine working?

2003-12-04 Thread cdrack
Hi, for an easy configuration but less optimizated
you can use the WineSetupTk configuration tool, i'm
not shure if it is on the Mdk 9.1 cd's but if not try
to findint on the net. or use the winetools that you
can find at www.winehq.com

 Hi all,

I installed Wine on my system from the cd (mdk 9.1)

to proceed. In the documentation on Wine HQ all
 sorts of configuration
tools and scripts are mentioned that I just can't
 find. Can anybody tell
me what to do or where I can find a clear tutorial.

My goal is when all is running to install TopStyle
 and give it the
ultimate test, so if any of you out there have done
 this, don't hesitate
to tell me how you did it...

Re: [newbie] windows networking

2003-12-03 Thread cdrack
Hi, on my prior Mandrake sistems (9.1,9.0,8)
if you whant to use the DHCP option, you must have a
HDCP server that provides you the control of the
addresses over youre net.

So if you don't have it, the easyest thing you can do
is use the static ip address assigned by youre selfe.

For using the linux PC as a server it must have the 2
network cards on it and one must be connected to the
adsl device and the other to youre network hub or
switch. then use the DrackGW option of the mandrake
control center on Networks and Internet. This is and
wizz that will guide you to the sucssesfull internet
sharring.

(my english isn't good at all but i'll do my best to
help you.)

 98SE in a peer-to-peer
network configuration. One of them also supplies an
 ADSL connection to all
PCs in my network (I used to have 3 running 98).
 The ADSL PC runs WinRoute
Lite, acting as a DHCP server, to accomplish the
 internet sharing.
(Ultimately, I'd like the Linux PC to do that and
act as a firewall as well,
but one thing at a time here!)

I am having a hard time getting my Linux PC on my

nothing of getting it internet access. In the LAN
 configuration screen, I
set my NIC to DHCP and click Activate, but I get
 nothing. I must be
missing something... any ideas? Is there a good
 tutorial available somewhere
that tells me how to accomplish this? Any common
 problems I need to be
aware of? Linux is completely foreign to me!!!

 Thanks,
 Chris

[newbie] Linux behind proxy

2003-12-03 Thread cdrack
Hi people, i have installed Mandrake 9.2 and i need to
use the internet access over the network. A server on
the net is administrating the internet over a proxy
server, and i wath to connect with it, but i can't
find where to especify the port of connection.

At the internet options there are an option to specifi
the addresses for the http and ftp but there are no
option to specify the port to use with it.

 Have some one any idea...???

 tnx. Cdrack.

you are rigth with the browser thing but the mail
client like evolution or kmail, doesn't have this

I've never had much luck with MDK's internet
 connection wizards, I find
it easier to configure by hand. There are various
 places where to
 configure the proxy.

For Mozilla, you go to the
 Edit-Preferences-Advanced-proxy and
specify there the name and port of the proxy. I
 guess there's something
 similar for Galeon/Konqueror etc.

For command line programs like wget/lftp you set up
 some shell
 environment variables, like

 ftp_proxy=http://proxy username:proxy
 password@proxy.name:port number

(my proxy allows only ftp over http, that's why I
 have http there). You
can put these entries in your .bashrc configuration
 file. I can be more
 precise if you need.

Re: [newbie] windows network connected

2003-12-03 Thread cdrack
just a thing... the linux secure option from the boot
loader means some thing like on windows fail proof
mode... where you have running only the escential
services and is used to fix some thing that doesnt
work... like video settings or services that hang the
system.

the secure option doesn't mean about information
security.

Thanks for the replies. I have my linux PC
 successfully connected to my

 selecting linux-secure
from the bootloader instead of linux. That locks
 everything down doesn't
it? If so, that was my problem. Now on to Samba!

 the only time I

Shouldn't be any other reason than that the rpm

Thanks for the advice but ...it complains that
 rdiff_backup.Main is

So I installed mdk 9.1 on my spare drive...it works
 without complaint.
I will ask some questions on their maillist.
