Re: [newbie] how to move mail from KMail (MDK10) to windows

2004-10-09 Thread g2
Thanks folks.

Yes, I thought I might get more flack for my message than I did.
As far as the port, I have since looked at the site for thunderbird, which BTW
works on win/mac/linux and it looks like it should be easy to move the mail.
I haven't tried it yet, and will certainly return here if I need help with it.

I do appreciate peoples willingness to offer help, even though the purpose is
unsavory.

I will give you a short idea of why I am thinking of moving back to win.

I came to mandrake linux from being a long time mac user and occasional
windows user. I was using an ancient mac with ancient OS and wanted a much
faster computer. So i built a a very modest box which is vastly better than
what I came from. I would have stuck with mac if I had the money, but not
really NEEDING any highend mac software (video, sound editing etc) I decided
to give linux a try. (yes, I know there is a tons of great linux software.)
The experience has been good and in a lot of ways I really liked mandrake.
However I had a lot of problems installing new software and generally trying
to change things around. It was terrific when I used the software that came
with the installation. But installing other things was really difficult for
me. For instance, I got my ipod working under mandrake but I couldn't
transfer aac files. I successfully installed a program that aloud me to me
encode to aac but it appeared not to be compatable with the program I needed
to move the files to the IPOD. That is there seemed to be two different
software programs that aloud for use of AAC files. I installed one of them
and got the encoding to work. But then I seemed to need another one for
GTKPOD to be able to transfer the files to the ipod. This is just an
example. I know there was a solution and I am sure people would have helped
me to find it eventually, but this is the kind of problems that I was having.

I can definitely reccomend Mandrake to people switching who want to do basic
computer functions and not install allot of new software and change things
around. Installation was easy and the system and software were very usable.

Unfortunately I never tried the mandrake club service. I understand that
might have helped allot in providing ready made rmps of a lot of software. I
did want to try it but was just never ready to spend the money on a six month
subscription. I wish they offered a very short trial subscription so that
one could see its usefullness. I certainly would have paid $5 for instance
to use it for a day or a few days in order to try it out.

Thanks again!

PS: just out of curiosity, is there a way to have both mandrake and windows
running at the same time on a single processor? I realize that this would
greatly affect system resources, if it is even possible, but I was just
wondering. I currently have a dual boot setup.

2004-10-09 Thread g2
Anne,

Thanks for your message.

Yes, I had set up urmp with some additional sources, I am pretty sure
including a plf source. However I still found it difficult to browse for
software. What I found myself wanting, no doubt from my past experiences
with other OS's, were lists of software by type with easy to understand
explainations of what they did. I found this quite dificult.

I will check out urpmi.org/easyurpmi

I am not completly giving up on linux.
I am however probably switching my primary OS to win xp.
I will keep the dual boot and continue to play around with linux when I have
the time. Perhpase I will switch back sometime.

Thanks again!

PS: does the rmp software depository at the mandrake club offer something
important over that of other sources, such as ones I might find at easyurpmi?
Perhpase just beyond MORE software? Such as easier browsing, better
catagorization etc?

As I'm sure you realise, linux is not only good for basic needs. However,
the problems you have met spring largely from having pre-conceived ideas
(we all have them if we have used a different OS) and having to learn new
ways of doing things, as well as being adventurous in trying things out.
Sometimes things get broken that way ;-) There's usually plenty of help in
sorting them, but, of course, it takes time.

I wonder if you had sources set up for additional programs? There are many
more available in rpms for Mandrake than those on the cds. If you are
interested in looking further, you might like to try urpmi.org/easyurpmi to
get additional souces - in particular plf, which is a repository for apps
that cannot be included in the distro for licensing issues. There are
other useful ones, too, and I'm sure people will give you urls for them if
 you want them.

You can run much of windows software, using wine, win4lin or vmware, but
they will only work if you have the hardware working under linux.

 Good luck!

[newbie] difficulty reconfiguring Kwallet under mdk 10.0

2004-06-22 Thread g2
I am running Mandrake 10.0 Official.
Somehow I accidentally set a password for the Kwallet, despite really not
needing one. Now each time I start up kmail, the mail program I use
regularly, I have to enter in the kwalltet password. I get a dialog box
explaining that the application has requested access to the kwallet, and
prompts me for the password.

I would like to get rid of this extra step so I don't need to enter this.
Before it was a minor annoyance not worth the effort to get rid of, but now I
want kmail to launch apon boot, so i really need to get rid of the password
problem.

I tried getting into kwalett by accesssing it via the menu under kde
system:configure:other:kwallet.

The system seems to be trying to do somthing for about a minuet, and then
nothing ! Not sure whats wrong, why I cant get in to it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS once I get this problem solved, how do I set kmail to automaticly launch
apon system startup?

Thanks a bunch.

urpmf libfaad will list all packages containing files with that string in
them. As you see that are four different packages.
 libfaad2_0-static-devel, libfaad2_0, libfaad2_0-devel and vlc-plugin-faad

libfaad2_0 is the actual library. We know this because it contains the file
libfaad.so.0 The 'so' means 'shared object' i.e. a library. You need this
installed to use any application involving libfaad.

The two 'devel' packages contain the header files of the libfaad library
and are necessary if you want to compile any application that requires
libfaad. The 'static' devel package is used when you want to integrate
libfaad inside the application you are compiling so it is not necessary to
separately install the libfaad package. This is known as 'static' linking.
The other 'devel' package is used to compile dynamically linked
applications where the libfaad package has to be separately installed.
Dynamic linked applications are smaller in size than static ones because
they do not need to contain all the dependency libraries.

When compiling apps we normally use dynamic linking, so in order to compile
your application install just libfaad2_0-devel. You will also need to
install libfaad2_0 in order to actually run your application.

The last package vlc-plugin-faad contains a library to use faad with the
Vlc media player (available from plf)

The fact that urpmq lists these packages at all means that your plf source
is correctly set up. You can install them either using the software install
GUI or from the command line (as root)
 urpmi libfaad2_0-devel libfaad2_0

If the install fails, then it may be your database for plf is out of date.
 Refresh it with
 urpmi.update plf

If you want to try out the Vlc player (which supports aac), then :-
 urpmi vlc vlc-plugin-alsa vlc-plugin-faad kvlc

 derek

Great, Thanks for the clear explanations.
I appreciate the primer.

The fact that urpmq lists these packages at all means that your plf source
 is correctly set up.

Doesn't it show that those files are already installed on my HD?
I did do a refresh of urpmi. and Installed the Vlc player, which is working
fine.

I tried installing faad from the command line:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] g]# urpmi libfaad2_0-devel libfaad2_0
Everything already installed

Yet when I ./configure

I still get:

...
checking for main in -lfaad... no
configure: error: *** FAAD library (libfaad) not installed - please install
first ***
[EMAIL PROTECTED] aacplugin-1.1.4]#

Now when I do the ./configure
I am ussing the same folder that I tar(ed) before installing a bunch of these
packages.
Thats fine, right? Its the ./configure command which is rechecking my system
to see if i have everything needed, and STILL NOT FINDING FAAD !

In addition, neither libfaad2_0-devel or libfaad2_0 finds anything when
searching from rpmdrake. I tried each of the three search methods, by name,
file name, and descritpion. Is it not finding anything because I already
have them installed?

[newbie] cant synch to palm pilot; MD 10.0 OFL

2004-05-13 Thread g2
I am not getting my palm pilot to sync.

I did a clean install of 10.0 official and would like to get my palm pilot to
work. Its a clie peg sj22, it connects via usb. I was able to do some type
of sync under 9.2. I'm not sure I had that working 100% correctly, but i
know it was at least syncing to some degree.

I have tried under both jpilot and pilot.
I have received the message:
Warning (gpilotd)
Unknown pilot- no pilots matches ID -1073745932
Use gnomecc to set pilots ID

Whats that? How do I get there? Is it referring to pilot under the
applications:office:communications menu? I tried that. I tried getting ID
from pilot. Doesn't seem to work. I haven't tried sending ID to pilot as I
would still like to be able to sync with me windoZe machine.

I tried copying the full message from jpilot, but i could not figure out how
to copy the text. ctrl c didn't seem to work and there was no copy
function on the menus.

I also got the msg:
Could not open /home/g/.jpilot/saved preferences

pilot settings do say usb.

After nothing worked, I tried
ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot
as root.

Now when I get id from pilot and then push sync on the pilot itself,
something seems to happen because the pilot says its syncing, and then it
says finished, cleaning up and that its all been synced. But when the
desktop returns to control, there is still no ID in that field, actually it
fills in a zero. But now the pilot doesn't just hang without a connection,
so it seems like something is happening, but it isn't syncing.

Any advice would be appreciated.
yea, I'm a newbie :)

[newbie] Sudden Logouts

2002-07-24 Thread g2

hi,

I haven't fixed my KDE 3.0.2 Sudden Logouts that is why Im switching
temporarily to GNOME, the problem is, I find KDE more user friendly than
GNOME for example in creating shorcuts to applications, I cant seem to
figure out yet how to make one in GNOME without dragging from
Nautilus, unlike in KDE where i just have to right click and voila, a
create link to application menu.

Switching between desktops sucks, just when i get used to KDE, that darn
sudden logouts occur. is that a known bug? or am just one of the few
lucky user to experience that?

what's the latest stable version of GNOME? I read GNOME 2 is just on a
beta version.

Im sure you'll be having no problem. When you're through, just
uninstall it then reconfigure your Mandrake.

Plus ofcourse, it helps if you do a disk defragging so the available
spaces are intact and together

Well, I know there is, I've just never tried it from Linux. Don't know
if telnet would do the job, if not there are some tools with tty in the
name (like mintty, etc.??) that might do the job.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will answer you!

hi I happen to experienced that problem, try using minicom, a very good
terminal emulator that can connect to your serial devices.

you have to configure it first by running #minicom -s. if you have any
problems using it, Ill be happy to help.

[newbie] Japanese Input

2002-06-24 Thread g2
Hi,

its me again. i successfully installed kinput2 and freewin RPM on my Linux
Mandrake 8.2 as well as the Japanese fonts, but shift+space and ctrl+/ is
still not working. how can i input hiragana, katakana and kanji? what
applications do they usually can be used for? i tried it on advnace editor
and kWord but still not working. is there something i missed? my default
language is English and I just like to make Japanese available for my
console cause my job requires some Japanese documents.

also, i already configured my keyboard to 106 japanese but none of those
extra keys work. I tried to edit the key binding configuration but it cant
detect the extra keys. is the windows key really not working in mandrake?

any suggestions?

last. how can i have my own Linux User number? Do i have to pay for that?

thanks!

[newbie] external USB Logitech HD cant mount

2002-06-24 Thread g2

hi,

im having problems mounting my Logitech HD connected thru USB 1.1. i
already installed USBview and USBmodule RPMs on my Mandrake Linux 8.2
and it was detected successfully.

the problem is, i cant mount it. there is no /dev/sda file only
/dev/usb/ but its not a valid mounting file. I run, service usb start
and /etc/init.d/usb start, and it said the status was ok.

is sda file for that device or should i mount another file? do i have
to install a driver because i dont have one for linux right now. I read
the howto on USB, it said it treats USB lik SCSI but then how come i
dont have sda* files?

How can I also use my USB Logitech:logicool webcam? are drivers still
needed for those? if so, does Linux have a drivers list on the web.

any suggestions?

thanks!
