My idiot sheet says:
make clean bzImage modules to build the kernel
make modules_install install to install the kernel.

Hopefully this this put the new kernel in your bootloader, and set it to the
default next time you boot. I have had occasional trouble with the default
bit. Hopefully it will work!

Subject: [newbie] Compiling the 2.6.11 Kernel ?

I am trying to compile my first kernel (2.6.11) using the
 source. The distro this
 is for is Mandrake 10.0.

I have had a look through the README file but reading this
has me unsure on the correct process.

Firstly I untar'd it an placed it in '/usr/src'

From there I ran 'make configold' as root and make the
additional changes as required. Once this was complete I did
 a 'make' then 'make modules_install'

All as gone great so far with no reported errors.

 I copied the'bzImage' from ../arch/i386/boot directory and
placed this in /boot as vmlinux-2.6.11

From here doubt has crept in - am I meant to copy anything
else into the /boot directory ?

I then edited the lilo.conf and added a line to look at the
 'vmlinux-2.6.11' image,
now what about the line that has the initrd=...what
do I need to do here ?

Thanks in advance for the help.

 Pete

I'm not at a Linux machine at the moment, but my recollection from when
I have done this is that there is no need to copy any files anywhere.
The make has an install option for the kernel as well as the modules.
Something like make install modules_install. My recollection is that
the order of the parameters is very important - but I cannot remember
what that order is!
If no one gets back to you, I'll try to post something in 9 or 10 hours
time

BTW Where did you download your 2.6.11 source from?

Which Digital TV card are you asking about?

I don't know - something that is easy to set up with Mandrake!

Mandrake 10.1 will work out of the box with some cards
 (e.g. Avermedia DVB),
but will require compiling of new modules with others (e.g. new style
Hauppauge Nova-T) The situation is complicated by
 manufacturers changing the
chip sets of their cards without changing model names.

Mandrake 10.2 will support many more cards without having to
 recompile the
 kernel.

Personally I would recommend a card based on a late model
 chip set such as the
Connexant cx88 chipset. The Hauppauge Nova-T DVB card works
 better for me
than the Avermedia card did. (better signal quality)

What software do you want to use with the card?

I currently use KDETV with an analog card. I did a 'click and install'
of Myth TV, and it didn't run.
I put it on my list of things to look at later - the list that gets put
in a corner and never acted on.
This may be a good reason to look at Myth again, in which case I would
be most grateful for your rpms.

I can heartily recommend MythTV. It is absolutely fabulous.
There are RPMs for it on plf, but they are out of date and
 not compiled for
digital TV (DVB) cards. I can supply you with a set of RPMs
 of the latest
 version compiled for Mdk 10.1.

A weekly/monthly 'tips' newsletter, if it is easy to subscribe to it at

Just unplugging the power can cause interesting problems sometimes. It

they don't have power. I have seen it where you could not access the

Thanks. I have now the following question: how can I commute the

If you use the Cable Select method, you have to set the jumper to Cable
Select, and the position on the cable sets whether it is master or slave.
There are many reasons, though, why I do not use that method.

The other method is to set the jumper on one drive to master and on the other
to slave. Most drives have either moulded-in markings 'MA SL CS' close to
the jumpers or printed on diagrams to indicate where to set the jumpers.
Other than that, many manufacturers have documents on the Internet showing
the settings - google will find them. If you need more help, give us the

 Easiest way ;-)

  If device hda

 how do you update
the linux/mandrake installation to look on a different disk?

If you really want to change it, then you will need to make
 changes to
lilo.conf before you swap the jumpers.

 Method 1 - somewhat dangerous
 First, back up /etc/lilo.conf
 mv lilo.conf lilo.conf.bak

Near the beginning of /etc/lilo.conf you will see a line like
 boot=/dev/hda

That needs to be changed to hdb

Then in each stanza you will find that root is being told
 where to look - in
 my case
 root=/dev/hde12
which is partition 12 on drive hde. Keep the partition
 number, but change the
hda to hdb in every place you find it.

When you've finished you need to run lilo
 /sbin/lilo

Do be aware that if you get this wrong you will need a rescue
 disk to sort it
 out.

 Method 2 -
Probably a safer way is to use your CD1. I think you press
 Esc when it starts
up - there's an on-screen message, so you should see it. One
 option then is
Rescue - and one option on that is to repair your boot menu.
 That will
safely do it for you. I'm sorry I can't be more explicit at
 this moment but
I'm sure you will find it.

2005-03-02 Thread Hugh Dixon
Method 2 - Hit F2, then type rescue at the prompt.

I would use Method 2. I would also leave boot=/dev/hda alone. This
will install the boot loader to the new Master drive. You will need
this, unless your BIOS will let you boot from IDE1. But
 change all the
root= statments to use /dev/hdb# instead of /dev/hda#. You will also
need to edit /etc/fstab, and change from hda to hdb here too. You can
 then re-install the boot loader.

I would make backup coppies of the files first, so if you deside to
change things back, you can just put the origional files back. If you
have not made any updates to the kernel, then the boot loader
 on the old
drive will even boot things without any changes.

Just for clarification, when you say make back ups, the only files are
the lilo.conf and fstab.
Is this correct? (Having done this sort of thing on windows I was
expecting it to be much harder...)

RE: [newbie] Resumption of DSL Connection

Subject: [newbie] Resumption of DSL Connection

 Hi All

I have Mandrake 10.1 using an eathernet RJ45 DSL input.

If I am connected to the internet and the RJ45 plug is
 unplugged and plugged
back in I loose my Internet connect and the ability to
 reconnect to the
 internet.

The only method I have found yet to restore an internet
 connection is to do a
system upgrade or reinstall the system. Now since this is a
 test box with no
critical data on it the only issue with that box is the
 inconvenience of
restoration which is becoming a pain. If of course this was a
 box with
critical data on it the issue would be more dynamic.

Question is there some other method to reestablish an
 internet connection
besides reinstallation. Note going to internet set up and
 reconfiguring does
not produce positive results of reestablishing an internet connection.

 Thanks
 Frank

I had an ADSL connection from Mandrake 10.1 (now 10.2), and I would
often unplug the RJ45 overnight if the firewall was down.
I'd plug it in the following morning and all would be fine.
If Kaj's ideas don't help, I suspect you are going to need to provide
more information about your modem and ISP

RE: [newbie] Linmodem-kernel source headers

2005-02-21 Thread Hugh Dixon
Melissa asked (paraphrased..)

   But where are the headers?

30 seconds, and I've already misfiled the original e-posting - D'Oh.
The linux source is installed by default into a directory
/usr/src/linux. Under this there is a tree, that I am not overly
familiar with. The question becomes which headers (also known as
'include files') do you want?

Have a look in /usr/src/linux and see if anything 'jumps out' as being
appropriate.

/usr/src/linux is a fairly standard path, so another application that
requires the headers may 'know' to look there, in which case you should
be OK, or may be happy being told the path is '/usr/src/linux'. - This
I believe is how the nvidia drivers work, although I guess that's not
much use to you :)

[newbie] compiling/installing problem

2005-02-20 Thread Hugh Dixon
Not sure if this really belongs on this list, but here goes.

I have downloaded the mandrake 2.6.8.1-24mdkcustom source, and tried to build
a kernel - just for fun (am I too warped?) so made no changes to the config
that I would expect to cause problems.
The source does not link. I get an error in arch/i386/kernel/built-in.o of two
undefined references, thermal_interupt and machine_real_restart.

I don't expect anyone on this list to fix the problem, but am wondering if
anyone has successfully built this kernel, or can suggest a reason mine doesn't
link.

thanks,

Hugh

Usually you can urpmi

2.6.8.1-24mdk

and it will do it for you and you can just boot to it.

OR

go to kernel.org get the latest source and compile it from vanilla source.

i have better luck compiling from vanilla

First of all, a belated thank you to Bryan and the others who have
weighed in on my modem problem. I am beginning to see the wisdom of
your advisement to buy an external serial modem. If the
 conversion of
a winmodem to a linmodem was a pain for you, it may be nigh

I've discovered that I do not know what kernel source headers are.
My guess is that anybody who knows anything knows what these are and

The kernel source can be installed using urpmi.

I think if you do a search for files named kernel-source they will
appear in mcc (Have you found the software installer in mandrake control
centre?)

One problem you may have is that you need to know what kernel you are
running 2.4 or 2.6 and also the patch number.
This should be displayed when you boot the system, and in terminal
windows. It will be something like 2.6.something with an mdk for
mandrake on the end.
The command uname run in a terminal will also display it for you. - I
think it is uname -v but it may be uname -r, I cannot remember,
sorry!
Make sure you install the kernel source that matches the version you are
running!

I am no-kernel cooker and just made a few of my own recently
to learn how-to do it, plus see if I could. So far no problems.

To give you an idea how many patches are applied to mandrake
 kernels, take a look here:

these are applied to the vanilla kernel tree, IIUC .. I am still reading the
kernel docs ..

If you mean you urpmi'd 2.6.8.1-24mdk-kernel-source and it doesn't build, the I
would uninstall *urpme* the kernel-source and re-install it, maybe something
got borked in the install. Can't hurt. But thats as far as I got with my own
kernel builds, and my nvidia driver builds now ;)

Not sure why but I usually replace with a standard kernel and it doesn't

Just a remark for others to comment on. My understanding (very preliminary) is
that the Intel Hyper Threading technology (Pentium 4 3.2 GHz for example) uses
the SMP kernel. The Hyper Threading Technology (copyright etc?) makes the
processor look like two processors. I use one of these at work under a usoft
operating system. The lads from Redmond make the processor appear to be two in
all the reporting and diagnostic tools. I think Mandrake (Linux?) does the
same. (In mcc go to hardware and open the processors tree. The HT
processor shows as 2 processors.)

I had considered something like that but for the record, my Dell is a Pentium

seemed to do any harm.

Laptops were mentioned in hte e-mail, and I don't think they use the HT yet.
I think I read somewhere that the SMP Kernel is more responsive for a desktop
system. I'd really like someone who knows something to confirm my rumours

 I have one of these:
 Vendor: Lite-On Technology Corp.

 Model: DVDRW SOHW-1653S

 both work fine.

[newbie] Hardware compatibility - dvd burners

2005-02-06 Thread Hugh Dixon
Hi,

I'm looking to get a DVD burner, and am having trouble sourcing things
from the Mandrake hardware compatibility list.
Does anyone know how up to date this list is?
Am I correct to think that anything that conforms to the IDE spec should
be OK?
Does anyone have stories of things to avoid?

Thanks,

Hugh Dixon

Owen, a little more information as to specifically where you are reading

For example, in GNOME select systemconfigurationGnomeFonts.

Your problems with ATI sound like mine with nvidia.
My interest is in the CAD area, and I like decent 3D acceleration - which it
seems to me, to something that the card manufacurers are not willing to provide

Combined with my ignorance of linux this leads to frustration on my part :(

It seems to me that the problems with nvidia cards are rather like the
problems with Creative sound cards - models that appear to be the same,
aren't, so that they are not as predictable as we would like. I don't play
games, so at a pinch I can do without 3D acceleration, though it is a great
help for video processing.

I'm possibly being unfair, but Mandrake wouldn't load at all with the card in
one computer. I changed it to another box, got Mandrake loaded, but when I
went to check the graphics configuration it crashed and trashed things so
badly that re-installation was the best option. It is running 10.1 now, but
without proprietary drivers. I can do without acceleration on that box.

Of course, many problems stem from hardware incompatibilities within the
system, so maybe it's not the fault of the card, but my experiences were far
from happy.

 was the way to go..

 Any comments?

Hugh,

I messed around with the QGLwidget a while ago for a project I never
finished
(typical, huh?). I can't guarantee that what follows still holds, but
it
worked about a year and 2 Mdk versions ago.

Excuse me if I cover ground you are already aware of, but I find it's
best to
never make assumptions, and it's helpful for other interested observers.

Well, I'll make a couple...  I'm assuming that you're coding C++/QT/KDE
(so
I'll ignore C/Gtk/Gnome options), using KDevelop, and that you have a
urpmi
source configured for Contrib.

Now for the possibly insulting parts :-)

About RPMs. Mandrake splits software into 3 types of RPM packages.
There's
the Applications RPM, the Library RPM and the Development RPM. The
Application RPM holds the actual executable that goes in /usr/bin and
related
data and config files (Windows equivalent = .exe's). the Library RPM
holds
any common library files provided by the application that go in /usr/lib

(Windows = .dll's). The Developement RPM holds all the include files
that
you need if you want to compile code that use the libraries, these
usually
have -devel- in their name. I'll list below what I think you need
(don't pay
too much attention to any version numbers, that just what's on my
machine,
just use what you have for now)

About OpenGL. OpenGL on Linux is usually provided by the Mesa project
(http://www.mesa3d.org/) working in with X11/Xorg. To have Mesa OpenGL
up
and running, and able to be compiled against, you need the following
packages
installed:
libxorg-x11-devel
Mesa
Mesa-demos
libMesaGL1
libMesaGLU1
libMesaGLU1-devel
libMesaglut3
libMesaglut3-devel
Things are a bit more complex if you use an NVidia card, as they provide
their
own GLX library, but so long as you install the NVidia drivers AFTER
Mesa,
you should be fine, as it should also install it's own include file.
Make
sure you actually have 3D acceleration working by running Tuxracer or
the
gears program. If you have problems here, try to get them resolved
before
moving on.

About Qt. Mandrakes version of Qt should have (as in used to when I
played
with it) support for OpenGL already compiled in (so you can ignore what
the
TrollTech site said about it only being enabled if the GL headers were
available, that only applies if you do a compile of Qt yourself), and it

should just work if you have all the required packages installed, you
should
not need to force a re-install. The RPM's you need for Qt are:
qt3-common
qt3-example
libqt3
libqt3-devel
And if you want the Qt database functions as well:
libqt3-mysql
libqt3-odbc
libqt3-psql

Qt has usually good documentation, which you can find online at:
http://doc.trolltech.com/3.3/opengl.html
http://doc.trolltech.com/3.3/qglwidget.html
There's also a number of example programs to look at:
http://doc.trolltech.com/3.3/opengl-examples.html
These pages are also installed on your hard-drive with the qt-devel

Hi Ricardo,

First of all, welcome to webcam hell. I'm kidding - but the biggest problem
you will have is with hardware. Mandrake has a compatability page listing
various hardware.

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/hardware.php3

Then, if you decide to go with gnome meeting, you will need to install
video4linux at the backend.

The webcam I have is not compatible and I couldn't be bothered getting another
so I fell at the first hurdle - but I imagine if you get a compatible camera
you'll be fine.

initially had with my graphics card (the trolltech site says it is only
installed if openGL headers etc are available) Uninstalling QT developer
tools, forces the uninstall of a fair number of other packages, which I don't
want to do. Can anyone suggest a way to 'refresh' the install of qt, and/or
force the install of the openGL stuff?

Thirdly, Is qt the best way for me to go for an intro to openGL? I am familiar
with openGL under windows (and even on a sparc box). I would however like
access to a GUI API, which is why I though the QT widget was the way to go..

Any comments?

Thanks,
Hugh

No, in a terminal type:

kdesu konqueror

A pop up password logon box will appear, and after you type the root
password
it will open konqueror as root. Back in the old days, before 9.1,
there
was a shortcut in the start menu for accomplishing this, but it was

for security purposes. Since then, I make my own shortcut for this
action. I
sometimes want to drag and drop files as root, because I am constantly
making
typos when I try to move or copy from the command line.

That will work--and mc looks like the old Norton Commander from DOS

Whoever it is is sending to the address that I use for the Mandrake

Re: [newbie] Not prompted for additional cds (resubmitted)

2001-08-18 Thread Hugh

I'm reinstalling 7.2 on a pretty old box (Eve - 266 MHz PII, 32MB Ram, junker
Everex Monitor, etc) and I am not getting asked whether or not I have the other
cds (I have the boxed version with 7 cds). I started an install on the
computer right beside it (Speedy Gonzalez - 866MHz PIII, 256 MB Ram, etc) and
I got prompted about the other cds right off without any trouble. So my
problem is I can't install all the packages and software I want and need
because it doesn't ask me for the other cds that are ready and waiting to be
used. Two points of note:

1. It did the same thing the first time I installed it (on Eve, Speedy was
and has always been fine), I just want to take advantage of this reinstall to
get it right. (original install was a week or so ago, for what it's worth)

and 2. I get warned about being low on system resources at the beginning of
the install, but I completed it with the graphical installation when I
originally installed the system, even tested X a few times without ever
hanging. I can go through a text install but I don't get prompted for it there
either.

Reply:I think your situation is just natural and normal.Actually,a full installation
generally occupies less than 2G space of hard disk.(according to my LM7.0 with Chinese
extensions release distribution). You can launch GNOrpm to see if there are any
packages you need to install.
You can view other CDs to check rpm packages.Right click on a rpm file, open Kpackage
in the menu
can install that program.
I think other several CDs are about documentation and source codes.

[newbie] Ess56PI modem installation failure

2001-08-17 Thread Hugh

Hi,mandrake linux users and specialists,
I encouter difficulty while installing my Ess56PI modem. The Ess2898 chip based
internal PCI modem is not that sort of winmodem. It's installed in PCI slot 4 using IRQ
11.It works just well under win98 and win2k.
After installing mandrake linux 7.0 ,I login by root and change to modem driver's
directory. Then type sh mdminstall command under a terminal window to launch the
setup script .However the system reports these information on the screen as follows:
rmmod :module esscom not loaded
/esscom.o:kernel-module version mismatch
/esscom.o was compiled for kernel version 2.25-15
while this kernel is version 2.2.14-15 mdk

It really seems a paradox.I use lsmod to view the moduls resident in RAM,esscom.o is
non-existent for sure. Finally I run modprobe command to try to load the module
manually, but the system says it can't find esscom module whatsoever.I appreciate any
hints available by you.
My PC hardware configuration:Pentium MMX 233 (oc 262.5,ie 75*3),160 M ram,trident 9750
image
PCI video adapter with 4M ram,ST 3.2G hard disk,PCchips brand Ali1531/1533 chipset
based motherboard(I don't know its ID),Yamaha 718 ISA soundcard.
PNP is diabled in bios.no hardware conflict.By the way the modem occupies com4 under
win98 and occupies com3 under win2000.How to explain this thing?
Previously I once installed winlinux2000.It can detect the Essmodem but still the same
situation presented as above.
Thank you anyway.

In Sylpheed these show up as 227 byte *text/plain message.footer*

Very annoying. Its like getting html mail every time.

2001-08-05 Thread Hugh Cecil

Hi
I've been using Mandrake 8.0 for a few months and enjoy it very much.

However, today I find I cannot su to root anymore from a user account.
In a terminal I su, type in root password, and get this:
[user@localhost user]$ su
Password:
File Size Limit exceeded
[user@localhost user]$

Similarly, when I try KDE su in File Manager (Super User Mode) I get an
alert box which says:
Conversation with su failed

My security level has always been set at 3. I did recently have a play
with InteractiveBastille, but I'm not sure whether that caused it.

Any enlightenment appreciated.

[newbie] Netscape and rpmlib problem

2000-08-09 Thread Hugh

I downloaded the 128 bit version of Netscape. When I open kpackage
and try to install the common files it says that I need "rpmlib 3.0.3-1
I am running 7.1 and had assumed Netscape would install without problems.
What does rpmlib do anyway?

Re: [newbie] Fortify

2000-08-06 Thread Hugh

Do you still need to remove the old netscape before installing the new one?

Just install the latest netscape rpms from cooker and it will have
 128bit encryption (netscape isn't releasing 56bit? anymore)

it? Give you a clue. It's Junk :)
Now you have a real nice day and you dont forget to write. If Outlook will
work that is :)

What application do you need? They are all there! And everything is
available, most even in GPL. Latest addition: StarOffice 6 will be GPL'd.

  Or do you mean application == games?  If so, then yes, you are right;
*professional* games are _still_ a weakness of Linux. But that'll change
  too.

I mean applications for Ham Radio like
Truetty RTTY and AMtor with sound cark
 Zakanaka PSK31 with sound card
Logic 5 Logging and radio control program
Fritz 6 Chess program that has beaten the world champion
MS Office I don't want to convert files and everyone is using office
FugawiA digital mapping program that allows me to make maps to put in my
 Palm for GPS use
PSP5 The best low cost image processing program

All this is only a start. I have 15000 files on my system. Of course not
that many apps but a lot.
Netscape sucks in comparison to IE5.5. Various other things that are not yet
 on Linux.

Everyone expects everything for free on Linux. Well ad far as
  application
choice goes, you get what you pay for.

Yes, exactly! Everything I need is there: Office (KOffice, StarOffice),
graphics (GIMP), browser (Netscape, Mozilla), email clients (lots and
lotsa), news clients (too many to name 'em all), programming
  (what language
do you want? I suppose that it is available), databases (MySQL,
  PostgreSQL,
  Interbase),

Yes but these applications are not nearly as robust as the Usoft
counterparts. Nothing available can touch Outlook and Outlook express.

I am not hoping that we talk about LINUX in the past tense. I
  just find it
is not ready for serious use yet AT HOME.

So isn't Windows. That's all I'm trying to say.

AGAIN though applications are the major thing, they drive the
  OS and not the
other way around. THAT is the real world.

Sure, and that's why Linux will "win". If there's something to win.

Not at this time it won't. It is also MUCH harder to install for the average
 person.
It is a fun toy and learning experience, that is all.

I suspect someone along the way just redifined a bogomip or two.
