[newbie] Quake 2 under 9.0????
Is it possible to get Quake2 running under 9.0? I have fussed with it, but haven't figure out each and every step. it seems to want stuff that does not exist anymore, like /dev/svga/. Rob -- Rob Blomquist Kirkland, WA On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section, it said 'Requires Windows 95 or better'. So I installed Linux and lived happily ever after. Thanks Brian Do a Google on CD drives and you'll get lot'sa info. Basically tho, CD and DVD and CD-RW drives all use slightly different laser wave lengths/widths. Particularly between CD and CD-RW drives. Another issue is any drive that spins CD's over 12x are prone to wear and the spindle starts wobbling slightly. Specially drives than are rated 32x and over. Often enough to make the media hard or impossible to read. Then there's the media itself. The quality and useability varies widely, sometimes even within a brand name spindle of 50 CDR's. Same is true for production CD's (ie, manufactured, not recorded). Some CD-RW drives (eg, Plextor, Yamaha) are known to work well with even poor media. Other drives (eg, Sony, HP) are know to be more fussy. 'Bout all you can do to minimize these situations is thru trial'n error, find media that works well with your CD-RW, and never burn faster than 8x. hmm i think you forgot about the ./ perhaps? go to /mnt/cdrom and type sh ./setup.sh HTH Damian Thanks, but that's not it - I tried all those different variations. I sent an e-mail that apparently hasn't reached the listserv yet that I was able to read it with my DVD drive. Strangely though - it turns out that the only files I saw as being on the CD when I read it from my CD-RW were the files located deep in the /mnt/cdrom2/Help/Manual/navart directory. Even stranger is that not even all those files showed up when I viewed the CD using my CD-RW. Very puzzling indeed. Nonetheless, I got it to install. Unfortunately, I can't get it to run now. I did everything exactly as I've done the last two times I installed it - made a shell script to kill the arts server before running quake3, etc etc etc - still it doesn't start up. It changes the resolution to the installation default 640x480 and then and then says received signal 11 - exiting. Now, The only time I got that signal 11 error was when I first tried to install and I ghad the sound server problem - but that's fixed since I'm using a script which kills the sound server first, so I don't know what's going on :-\ Anyone able to help? You can get Quake 1 here, but you'd better check for availability (Note that this link is the publisher): http://www.macmillansoftware.com/detail_software.cfm?item=1575952718 You can get Quake 2 here, but again, check availability (This is also the publisher): http://www.macmillansoftware.com/detail_software.cfm?item=1575952726 You can get Quake 3 here, but it is on back order at the moment: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=176184mscssid=ref=1PromoCode= You can get Quake 3 Team Arena here, but it is sold out for now. The real pain is that sometimes X will totally crash and throw me back to the login screen. I can log back in but X and KDE (or Gnome) will be very unstable and I end up rebooting. Dear Michael, I have Mandrake 7.2, Voodoo3 3000 and Quake III runs fine. I had a lot of problems to got the acceleration of my Voodoo3, because Mandrake 7.2 have a bug for our video card, but after solvingit, every accelerated program I have installed runs OK. Are you sure you have the acceleration runing? You can taste with some of the Arcade games coming with Mandrake, for example Chromium, Tuxkart, Tuxracer and so on. If these games do not run, you probably need to solve the acceleration problems first. Anyway, sometimes when I run Quake III the screen change to a little ressolution, but I just wait for almost a minute and it starts to run. Re: RE: [newbie] Quake III or any game?
Hey Michael, I am running Quake III and Unreal Tournament. I run Unreal Tournament using the software render (SDLDrv.SDLSoftware.Render). I tried OpenGL (SDLGLDrv.SDLGLRender) but it was all messed up.The sceneray was missing much and I couldn't make out any words but I could play it best in OpenGL. The SDL was clean and crisp but the performance was lousy. And this is with the screen resolution at 640X480! I have a Voodoo3 3000, 64MB RAM, 2.2.17 kernel, and a X 4.01 server running. My system is a AMD K6-2 466MHz. When I had X 3.3.6, my computer ran beautifully with Glide support. I'm tempted to go to the cvs for DRI support to see if that would bring the performance back to my system. In the Engine.Engine section it pulled the driver libGL.so.1 for OpenGL, anybody know of one better? That is all I have for now. Because of my current situation, I don't dare go into an internet Multiplay! I am a hell of a time just trying to beat the bots in the Single Player Mode! I hope someone has better new then I and would greatly appreciate them passing their information onto the rest of us. And Id has said they're committed to supporting Linux even if the major distributors aren't. :-) That may mean we'll have to buy an "electronic copy" or something if we want the Linux version of future Id games (assuming there isn't enough "linux" support seen in Q3.) John Negative, suffer the month and buy the linux version, it truely is the only way others will get the hint. And as for complaining, make sure you only whine about the shipping dates not all being the same, as they really are only trying to help in shiping seperate versions for linux mac and win32. Does anyone know if the demo of Quake 3 Arena that just came out works with any other cards that those based on 3Dfx I really don't wanna have to download this thing only to find out that I can't use it. Also, how can I set up my Red Hat 6.1 box to run it usinga TNT2 Ultra card Thanks in advance. 2.2.12 kernel X ver 3.3.5 Lionel a.k.a Salty1

Checkout the glx project (http://glx.on.openprojects.net) You can get precompiled versions of the mentioned software (after reading atleast some of the site please) from cooker in the Mesa-3.1cvs rpms, I have a mga and rage card to test with but not a tnt yet. Lenny has said he had problems with the .so for tnt, but he's the only one i know of that has tested tnt. Mga should be ok (heretic2 plays nice on the G400). There isn't any hardware support for the Rage cards yet, they're finishing up changes needed in Mesa today so it will be along shortly. -- MandrakeSoft http://www.mandrakesoft.com/ --Axalon

If a software dealer gives you a hard date for the release of any Id game, they are making it up.. Anyone that has followed John Carmack and co. over the last few years knows that they never give hard release dates. They always release the game "When Its Done". Todd Hollenshead, the CEO for Id software had this to say in a recent finger update. ( you can see it for yourself by going to the console or xterm window and typing 'finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] | more') Here is Todds update: 11-14-1999 Demo Test notes: As Graeme indicated, this is a preliminary release. We are retaining the prohibition on physical media distribution until we release the final or "gold" demo. That means that magazines will NOT be allowed to distribute this version of the demo on coverdisks. This is marked all over the test, however I would appreciate it if all of the Quake 3 and game site webmasters that are mirroring or covering the release would lend me a hand and make sure our friendly neighborhood game and computer magazines understand this. Rest assured, we will allow physical media distribution of the final demo, once it is released, but not yet. Second, although the 1-800-idgames number is on the screen, we (id) aren't accepting orders yet. Also, please remember that number is not for technical support for Quake III Arena, the demo test, or any other id game. Feedback, bugs, etc., in the demo test should still be sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Finally, before the crazy speculation starts, we aren't done with the game yet. We will be finished "when it's done!" Again, anyone besides id claiming to have the official release date is just pulling your chain.

Original Quake you have to have the Dos/Windows version, plus download some stuff for Linux. Quake II is the same way. Quake3 has a version that is linux-native on store shelves right now, I think.
