Hello all. Please feel free to ignore this test message. I just joined the
list and need to see an actual message to get my mail filters configured.

I don't know how busy this list is yet so I don't know how long I'd have
to wait for my first normal message. So I don't know what the difference
is between the headers of the welcome message from the list owner and a
regular posting will be. And if I don't configure the filter NOW I wont
have the time for at least a week. So please forgive me for wasting your
bandwidth with a test message. After this you can expect that I'll lurk
for a while to see what this list is like before I post anything else.

Thanks for your patience.

[newbie] Hello (X problems)

2002-09-30 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Before I proceed, I would like to greet averyone on this list.

I am new to the list, so if I make any mistakes :
a. Bare with me
b. Tell me where I went wrong

Here goes my problem.

I've been having issues with mandrake 8.2 (tried to upgrade from
8.1), so I decided to install my freshly downloaded copy of
linux Mandrake 9.0.

Everything went fine up to the X-window part. Installation went
smoothly and linux asked my resolution for X. I have an Eizo 19
monitor and a Kyro Hercules 4000 with 32Mb of RAM, so the system
thought it would be a good idea to suggest 1240X1024 16-bit colour.
When installation finished I got the above resolution which is not
the best for my eyes, so I tried to tweak the res with the help
of XFdrake but to no avail.

I , now, lost all X-windows and the only thing I did was to change
the boot resolution on /etc/lilo.conf from 1240x1024 to 800x600
(note: that's the vga= part on lilo.conf). I suspect that something
went wrong there and the system will no longer launch X-windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any given docs for XF86-4.x
Looks like it's very different from previous versions of XF86 (say
3.3.6).

Thank you for your time and patience,

Spyros Tsiolis

x-flowedI'm not sure about how to fix you keyboard problem but the
clock
 issue
is one that I had when I installed Linux-Mandrake on my PC here.
For
some reason, the mandrake clock ran 5 hours behind where it should
have.
Here are a few suggestions, check the clock from the command line
type
clock -r to check the CMOS clock and compare it to the clock in from
your gui...kde or gnome (which ever you are using). If your gui's
clock
is showing the right time, you can set the CMOS clock to the same
time
by typing clock -w. If your CMOS time is showing the correct time
but
the gui is not, type clock -a and this will set the system clock in
accordance with the CMOS time. I hope this helps you with your clock
problems. I'm kind of a newbie as well but that is how I fixed the
 times between the two.

No problems at all, thanks to a friend of mine RedHat user for years,

1) there is no mapping for the Italian or QZERTY keyboard, the one
you have to press shift to write the numbers, the only choices are:

These options can be found during the installation and running

of your message. As you can see, it looks just fine that way. With HTML, a
message's size can grow exponentially, leading to longer downloads for all of

RE: [newbie] Hello

2001-05-11 Thread Wynne Crisman

That depends a lot on whether you need the latest kernel. If you have
hardware that is not supported by previous kernels/releases of mandrake you
may need 8.0. I personally cannot recommend it as I have not been able to
get it to work yet and I have spent the last week trying (not that I am a
Linux guru - I do all my development on windoze). For example, I have a
ATA100 RAID configuration for my drives which requires ATA100 support in the
kernel, thus 8.0 of mandrake (or 2.4.x of the kernel).

PS: Why buy an external modem? If you must have a modem, the internal ones

You have a number of options as far as purchase goes. I'm still running 7.1 (with
2.2.19 kernel).
For a newbie, there's nothing wrong (perhaps a lot right ;o) ) with running 7.x and
perhaps waiting for 8.1 or 8.2 to upgrade. OR you could purchase a two disk set
of 8.0 from Cheapbytes for about $4-5 right now and then buy the official 8.1
later on from mandrake.
Almost any external serial modem will work. I like USRobotics personally.

With regard to choice of release, as I see it you have 2 options. If you feel
you need the manuals you can either buy a boxed set of 7.2 now or wait for a
boxed set of 8.0 when it is released. The alternative if you want some fun
and possibly learn more in the process is to get the GPL (download) version
of 8.0 from someone such as cheapbytes, install it and find your own way
round it, search the newbie archives for subjects you want to know about and
ask questions here. The choice really is yours, you know how
knowledgeable/adventurous you are and how soon you want it.
Have a look through the newbie archives as well for posts about any problems
with hardware you may have i.e. sound/graphics cards, printers etc, that way
you will have the answer before the question arises.
As to choice of modem *nearly all * external modems work (but not USB as I
understand it) , a lot of internal modems either don't work or need to be
made to work, so an external modem would be the easiest option - just make
sure that it is a 100% hardware modem, (I think the other term is Hayes
compatible but I'm not sure, so wait until someone flames me for bad advice
if I'm wrong here :-))

7.2 has its little boogers in it too, but is not bad.

If you really need it quick you may wish to go get 7.2 in the box.

You can save copies of the Make.header files by selecting Save As.
Overwrite the files.

I've noticed this with other compilers. On occasion, you have to exit

Then, open the project file again. In this case: hello_world.jcc

me there are loads). Also there sould be some documention in the
/usr/doc folder on you system.

P.S make sure you chose the development class of install.

Well adam,
to edit you program, there are many text editors you can use,
me personally prefers the Midnight Commander editor, since it supports C\C++
syntax, in order to edit with this editor,
you should first create an empty file(Use 'touch file_name.c'. or 'touch
file_name.cpp' for C++), then launch the Midnight Commander(type 'mc'),
then choose your empty file and press F4.
To compile your file, use
'gcc -g(for debuging) -o output_file_name source_filename', to compile C
programs,
or
'g++ -g(for debuging) -o output_file_name source_filename',  to comple C++
programs.

Install (or upgrade to), 'expert' and 'developement'. This will
insure you have everything need to compile. Also apps like code
Commander and Kdevelope will be installed. You'll then need to
choose one, or install something else, and explore it's docs till
you learn how to use it.

Hi --

One of the best ways to learn to program in C is to get a good book. I would
strongly recommend Stephen Kochan's book. The title is something like
"Programming in C, second edition". It's a paperback, green cover, with a
black diamond on the front cover. It's well written and will teach you C.
Learn C before going to C++!

What do you all think out there???

I'm not familiar with the history of this thread, but after wrestling
with an other linux install/config for nine months, I found the upgrade
to Mandrake to be a breeze, even if I did lose my mouse functionality in
the process. And while reconfiguring the mouse, I lost my keyboard too!
Somehow, Mandrake fixed things, after I told Lilo to boot my

I've accomplished more in 24 hours with Mandrake, than I have in a month

Linux may not be user friendly, at first, but the bug fixes are free,
and you don't have to wait a year + for the fixes to be rolled out.

A couple of things it might be.
Check all your connections to CD also.
1)ATAPI CD that is not recognised. I had a Delta 44X that would NOT work...I
toss in my Toshiba 32X...BINGO..:)
2) Bad ISO d/l...therefore bad CD burn -re d/l try again
3) bad CD burn - re d/l try again...probably with 7.0 release 2
4) Spend $1.99 at a Linux site and get a pro copy of 7.0

Re: [newbie] Hello!!!

1) tar xvf gnome-chess-0.2.2.tar
which should create a directory, more than likely gnome-chess-0.2.2 or
gnome-chess
2) cd to the newly created directory
3) look for some docs like README or INSTALL
4) read the docs and hopefully it will inform you how to install
the gnome-chess-0.2.2

A "tar" file is a file that is made from multiple files and is "balled"
together to make it easier to distribute. You must use the tar utility
to "un-ball" this file into its original files. i.e. tar xfv [filename]
should do the trick. If you see a file with the extension tar.gz or
tar.Z then not only is the file balled together but it is compressed.
In this case tar xfzv [filename] will decompress the file and "un-ball"
it.

After doing this you will probably be left with the source code for the
Gnome Chess. I'm not sure. I haven't looked. If you are, then look
for instructions in a readme file. Usually the procedure is to change
into the directory created and issue a ./configure and if that goes ok
then issue a make and then a make install. However, read the
instructions because this may vary.

Regards

Hi Bryan,

After reading the news postings at work today on the web, I did a quick
reinstall of Mandrake selecting the security setting of 0. (Previously
I picked 4- HIGH). Everything was immediately working.

I think for us newbies, the Mandrake folks need to put out some detailed
documentation on just what each of the security levels 0-5 means. I looked
for that everywhere and couldn't find it.

Thanks for the suggestion!!

Well, first off, try looking up information on the telnet daemon, i.e.
'telnetd'. This allows you to be a telnet 'server', and allow telneting
into your box from outside. Try 'man telnet' for the client side, or
'man telnetd' for the server side information. I can dig around a
little more later, but you would be better served in the long run to
find it yourself... nothing wrong with a 'push' in the right direction
though. ;) I've been in the same situation myself before, and probably
will be again in the future. We all have/will be.

You have to install the rpm from the cd. On 6.1 it's not installed by

[newbie] Hello- Installation Question

2000-01-19 Thread Mike Lee

Hi there.

Last night I tried to install Mandrake on a clean hard drive, 13 gigs, I
got to select packages, after selecting the packages I wanted to install, I
continued the installation process.

It seemed to be loading the packages fine, but it was taking forever so I
left it to finish the installation of the packages and I figured when I got
up this morning I could finish the installation by configuring the rest of
L-M.

Well, when I got up the machine had frozen, it seems, in the middle of the
package installation. It asked for me to press any button to continue, I
did,and it rebooted and began the installation process from the beginning
again

Has this happened to anyone else? And, if so, what did you do to correctly
install it?

Thanks!

Hardly a mass exodus. And there were more than enough indications
that there was a problem with the list server. Its pretty apparent
that they lost the database, reinstalled an old one, which is why at
first folks that had unsubscribed were suddenly resubscribed. They
couldnt fix that and just re-initialized the database, which simply
meant that everyone who HAD been subscribed would have to
resubscribe...which is what is happening in dribs and drabs.

The mass exodus theory? LOL

So you have a problem with checking the archives?

Sometimes it is easy to answer a question that is asked 20 times a
week. But some questions involve more than one or two sentences.

Which is why folks are told to check the archive for their answer
first. Simply much easier than the same folks having to answer the
same questions over and over and over, wouldnt you say? Or do you
have endless time on your hands?

I've had the same problem with a KDE theme. I don't recall which theme

The way to fix this problem is to remove the .kde directory in your home

James,

I've installed Mandrake, RH, SuSE, and Caldera on a Compaq Armada 7400 docked
or undocked without any problem. Compaq uses cable select on all their drives
so you don't have to worry about master/slave jumpers. Does your laptop use
cable select or jumpers. Are the two drives hda and hdb identical? The diag
dump shows they are the same model but hdb is not reporting a serial number.
If you have two drives on the same cable and they are both jumpered as master
then you could possible be getting responses from the first drive(hda) when the
ATA ID command is sent to the second drive(hdb). What are the three IDE
devices connected to your system? Or are there only two as your message below
suggests?

 Ok,

this is one of the problems..

I am trying to install Linux on a Laptop/docking station combo. I have the
laptop with an internal IDE drive and with the port connection to the
docking station I can have another IDE drive in the docking station giving
me 2 drives on the system.

BUT Linux does not detect it correctly.

This is an output from OPEN LINUX system analyser. I have used this because
Mandrake does not have anything like this I that I have found.

Take a look and tell me what you think is happening.. Thanks

 James
