Well, I probably paid more then I should have for it 20 years ago. I
used it on my first home computer. I had a LOT of programs on paper tape.

360k were the orginal one-sided 3.5 floppies. 720k were the one-sided
high density ones :-). My first desktop was a Mac SE FDHD; i.e. the
first Mac ever to come with a high density floppy drive :-). Betwen a
whopping 1.4MB of space-per-floppy and a huge 20 MB hard disk, and the
fully-upgrade 4 MB of RAM, I was all set!

Makes me feel young though... 1k of RAM? Gee whiz. I guess there
wasn't much eye candy, huh? :-P.

Eye candy? We built pictures from white blocks on the black screen! g

It was almost 6 years after that when I got my first pc - with a monochrome
green screen. I remember that awful sinking feeling when I saw the C:\ and
didn't know what to do next. I also remember that there was no affordable
software at first that did what I had been doing on the Spectrum - accounts,
database, spreadsheets and so on. As for graphics - no way!

I'm going to uninstall this OS as soon as possible from my computer... I
can't stand it any longer. Linux sucks !
And I'm going to get a Microsoft Certificate and install Windows XP,
 which I have never used.

RE: [newbie] back to Windows

2005-04-01 Thread h k ball
... very entertaining, I was taken in totally, because as a month old
newbie I went through that phase ... bought some Mandrake 10.1 disks ($6),
they worked OK at first, but then degraded ... ended up with:

(1) .. an old Mandrake Red Hat 6.0 that works on my desktop ..

(2) .. a SUSE 9.2 working in VMWare on my laptop ... ended up downloading
the 3.3gig .iso file, turns out VMWare can read the .iso file right off my
hard drive, don't have to fool with burning CD's etc ..

(3) ... the struggle getting from command mode to KDE in (1) above really
taught me the Linux (UNIX) fundamentals, plus reading your wonderful
mailing list each day ...

(4) .. once you get into KDE, everything's a breeze ...

Adding what is perhaps its most significant member to date, the Open
Source Development Labs (OSDL) has announced that longtime open
source opponent Microsoft is joining its ranks, giving Eric Raymond
a seat on the Microsoft Board of Directors and agreeing to a
sweeping intellectual property agreement this week.

OSDL said that after several hours of intense negotiations,
officials of the center of gravity for Linux and open source had
brokered the deal with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who downplayed
the membership of a proprietary software maker in an open source
organization.

Subject: [newbie] back to Windows

I'm going to uninstall this OS as soon as possible from my computer... I
can't stand it any longer. Linux sucks !
And I'm going to get a Microsoft Certificate and install Windows XP,
which I have never used.
Linux has no future ! And this list sucks, too ! Fare you well !

[JDOW] Rumor has it that this ancient Roman (and perhaps earlier)
tradition may have made it to Brazil via Portugal. A lot of other
things may have, too. But that's only rumor. I didn't see if with my
own eyes. (I'm ancient, but not THAT ancient.)

Where do you think the Brazilians came from? Rome had been there.
Etruscans had been there. Phoenicians had been there. Egyptians had been
there. The Atlanteans had been there, the Polynesians had been there.

Needless to say, though, I have inside information that Josenildo
actually runs IBM OS/2 Warp4 and he's been pulling everyone's leg from
the beginning of this annual exercise - just to get at Anne.

I had a Processor Technology Sol PC, which morphed into a more normal
S100 bus machine that I used until a short while after 19851102, the
birth date of my Amiga 1000. I adopted Amigas to my heart - and
still rather like them and their UI innovations. (Liked Amigas so
much I even added a Linux kernel hack for correctly reading Amiga
hard disk partitions. That was easy since I wrote the most commonly
used Amiga hard disk partitioning tool.)
