On the attributes toolbar there is a width option as well as style and

painful to get to since the only way I can find it is to go through the
Mandrake Control centre. When I tried to install KPPP through the add

Has anybody else had success dialling up with 9.2? What did you do and
 how did you do it?

Now, the package for Kppp is kdenetwork-kppp. It sounds like you found it.

I don't dial out, so I can't say what is going on. Now I just messed with it
on my modem less system, and it worked fine.

I would suggest opening it from a termial window, and seeing what messages
stream by. They might give a clue to your problems.

Pawel, if you have been reading anywhere about Mandrake 9.2 you will
know of the problems that have been found with LG drives. The ISOs

Anyway, have a Maestro modem. When I upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2, no modem

Ran the DrakConnect (you can get to it from the MDK Control Centre

After configuration, restarted Linux. On login found KPPP (Internet Dial

OK so you are using the alsa driver.
Go ahead and install the alsamixergui. That message you saw was just a
warning that the package had not been signed with the signature of the

Just copy on the /home/user/.kde/Autostart/ directory files mades

Fyi I'm a 9 week old noob' but windoze user, back from dos 5/6+.
 I'm dual booting [mandrake 9.1, kernel 2.4.19-13, kde 3.1.4]
w/win98 fer games now .. I have a creative labs Geforce Pro videocard.
the glx driver rpm's from mandrake are installed but I couldnt get
'glxgears' test to work (after I broke my system for the 12+ time),
this time i got this error trying to run quake2 thru winex3.1
from konsole error: could not open /dev/nvidiactl because the
permissions are too restrictive. Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS section of /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps
 to correct.
So readme says the PAM system may be changing permissions on nvidia
/dev files. So this usually works but it can get confused. It
recommends changing /etc/security/console.perms and remove dri
references. I did this and it works, glxgears and quake2. BUT I miss
line 80 with another dri reference and forget to chmod fileperms
owner to root.yes I got xcited. So now it wont finish booting,
It says hde1 is not right and wants to do fschk but fails, choice
is to reboot or ctrl-d for root password. So I go to root console
and try to repair the lines in console.perms thru emacs, now the
file system is read-only, although emacs will make a backup
 (console.perms~) ??

So before I reinstall from iso backups (norton ghost) pheew ..
how should I procede ? should the mandrake rpm's be fine if I install
nvidia driver from nvidia*.pkg2.run from the site ? or do they
need to be uninstalled ? inorder to not repeat this again, any ideas?
I'd like to fix it first, ghost it as the last resort, then install
 nvidia driver.

 Thx in advance,
btw I ghosted /home before I wrote to newbie.. so I think the FS
should be ok. I think ..
 (sidebar?-what is pam?)

Yuck... You have managed to get in a bit of a mess.
The issue with console.perm is trivial and easily resolved. Your real problem
is the file system on /dev/hda has managed to get corrupted somehow.
Which file system are you using? It should be a Journalling system such as
Ext3, ReiserFS or XFS. Do not use Ext2 it is far too vulnerable to getting
corrupted when newbies choose the 'Windows way out' and hit the 'Reset'
button.
BTW: If you want to know how to power down your system safely then look here
http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/MandrakeLinux/91/en/Starter.html/troubleshooting-system-freeze.html

I would suggest the easiest way out of your problem is to reformat your
partitions and either restore your Ghost image, or just do a fresh install
while preserving your /home partition so your settings are not lost.

As for the Nvidia driver all you have to do is edit this line in console.perms
dri=/dev/nvidia* /dev/3dfx*
and line 80 should look like
xconsole 0600 dri0666 root

You should also check your /etc/modules.conf includes the line
alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

Oh and PAM is Permissions Access Module. It works out who is allowed to do
what.
In this case it is working out who is allowed to send data directly to the
screen (Direct Rendering) The 0666 in that line above means any user logged
into an XConsole can use the Direct Rendering

RE: [newbie] nVidia problem with permissions ..

2003-11-06 Per discussione Ricky

I would suggest the easiest way out of your problem is to reformat your
partitions and either restore your Ghost image, or just do a fresh install
while preserving your /home partition so your settings are not lost.

As for the Nvidia driver all you have to do is edit this line in
console.perms
dri=/dev/nvidia* /dev/3dfx*
and line 80 should look like
xconsole 0600 dri 0666 root

You should also check your /etc/modules.conf includes the line
alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia

Oh and PAM is Permissions Access Module. It works out who is allowed to do
what.
In this case it is working out who is allowed to send data directly to the
screen (Direct Rendering) The 0666 in that line above means any user logged
into an XConsole can use the Direct Rendering

Subject: [newbie] nVidia problem with permissions ..

Hello all, ( thx..learned alot listening in)
but I need some guidance here..
Fyi I'm a 9 week old noob' but windoze user, back
from dos
5/6+. I'm dual booting [mandrake 9.1, kernel
2.4.19-13, kde 3.1.4]
w/win98 fer games now .. I have a creative labs
Geforce Pro
videocard. the glx driver rpm's from mandrake are
installed
but I couldnt get
'glxgears' test to work (after I broke my system for
the 12+
time), this time i got this error trying to run
quake2 thru winex3.1
from konsole error: could not open /dev/nvidiactl
because the
permissions are too restrictive. Please see the
FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS section of
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README for steps to
correct. So
readme says the PAM system may be changing
permissions on
nvidia /dev files. So this usually works but it can
get confused. It
recommends changing /etc/security/console.perms and
remove dri
references. I did this and it works, glxgears and
quake2. BUT
I miss line 80 with another dri reference and
forget to
chmod fileperms owner to root.yes I got xcited. So
now it
wont finish booting, It says hde1 is not right and
wants to do
fschk but fails, choice is to reboot or ctrl-d for
root
password. So I go to root console
and try to repair the lines in console.perms thru
emacs, now
the file system is read-only, although emacs will
make a backup
(console.perms~) ??

So before I reinstall from iso backups (norton ghost)
pheew ..
how should I procede ? should the mandrake rpm's be
fine if I
install nvidia driver from nvidia*.pkg2.run from the
site ? or
do they need to be uninstalled ? inorder to not
repeat this
again, any ideas? I'd like to fix it first, ghost it
as the
last resort, then install nvidia driver.

Thx in advance,
btw I ghosted /home before I wrote to newbie.. so I
think the
FS should be ok. I think .. (sidebar?-what is pam?)

 ok. I think .. (sidebar?-what is pam?)

Ricky,

I had (have) a very similar problem with my GeForce FX
5600... I started getting that same error you do about
permissions being to restrictive. I also attempted
removing the dri references (but forgot one) and
found my self booting to what you have now. Now if
only I can remember how I fixed it...

I do know I made a backup of the console.perms but I
believe to overwrite the exsisting one, I had to go in
single mode. If are using LILO, try booting into
single mode THEN try modifying the console.perms file.
I believe you hit ESC at the graphic LILO screen and
type 'linux single' to accomplish this (others can
comment if this isn't right).

While I was able to bring it back just fine, I tried
it again but made sure to remove all dri
references... I wasn't impressed with the results so I
put it back. To this day if I get that error I must
enter a root console and chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia* to
get to work. Please, if any knows of better solution,
let us know!!

Thanks,

Tango

Assuming you are using Lilo, and Mandrake installed lilo then what you do is
while booted into Mandrake create a mount point (for example /mnt/suse_boot
and mount your Suse /boot partition on it.

Now edit your lilo.conf and add a stanza like this :-
image=/mnt/suse_boot/vmlinuz
label=Suse
root=/dev/hdc1
initrd=/mnt/suse_boot/initrd.img
append=blah blah
vga=788
read-only

Now when you run lilo -v Lilo will calculate the cylinder and sector that the
Suse image is located at and will write those values into the bootloader. The
only reason you have to mount the Suse /boot in Mandrake is to allow Lilo to
calculate that sector offset.

Hope that works for you. Its what I do to run Libranet (which by the way is
the easiest way to get into Debian I know of)

I think Grub may be better for doing this sort of thing, but I have never got
around to learning it.

[newbie] slow and failing uploads

2003-11-06 Per discussione Todd Slater
I've got a couple of php/sql apps on a server running 9.1 that will take
uploads. The problem is that the uploads take forever and sometimes die
before they're finished. These are done through a web interface--no ftp
or anything like that. Downloads work fine.

I have a hunch that this is related to firewall, but what would I check
on the server to make sure it's not some config setting there? It's
running at the highest security level, but pretty much a stock install
of everything web-related.

*BSD ports and packages are different systems. The package system works as
you mention, the ports system does not. The package system does not
support upgrades. You must uninstall the current release, then install the
next release.

The *BSD ports system is awful. It is one single large download including
a very large number of software products. It will download a specific
product source tarball(s), apply patches for *BSD, then install. The
problems start when you install multiple products using ports system and
you want to upgrade one and not others. Then you must maintain multiple
copies of these big downloads.

This is strange, the sound related lines are:

The first line is for ALSA to load the snd-pcm-oss module after the
snd-intel8x0 module is loaded, but the second line will cause the

2003-11-06 Per discussione aidanh
WellI am finally on the net again with 9.2 Thanks to all those that
offered help. For those that are interested, this is how I did it.

After (another) clean install, I ran drakConnect to set up the
connection and restarted before attempting to connect.

after the restart, KPPP had not appeared there as it had for one other
user, so I installed it from the 9.2 disks. Then I restarted again.

This time KPPP had been installed correctly and it had not
simultaneously removed most of my other apps like it did last time.

Now I attempted to connect using KPPP failed again, the PPP daemon
died unexpectedly. When I viewed the error log it told me that the ISP
had spat out the username/password I knew I had them entered correctly
sa I tried changing a setting (the protocol?) in KPPP from PAP to
PAP/CHAP and now all is working fine. - this might be worth noting for
others trying to use ancient dial up accounts.

I don't know if all the restarts were necessary, but I'm still in the
windows mentality of if in doubt - restart when you make any changes
to program installations.

As for KPPP installing this time but not others, it seems that the order
I did things in made the difference this time. Last time I had not
configured my connection in drakConnect before attempting to install it
and it really screwed my computer up. I wouldn't have thought this
should have made any difference though.

Any thoughts??? perhaps this would be a handy addition to the Twiki -
but I'm still not certain WHY this worked this time so I don't want to
go adding notes that are full of bulls#%t

[newbie] halt / reboot options at login screen

2003-11-06 Per discussione basic

Hi,
Excuse if this is a duplicate, but I don't see my original appearing on the list.

My system is a dual boot win2k / LM9.1 laptop.

If I start my machine it defaults through lilo to linux and the login screen.
Very occasionally I miss the lilo options and the machine starts up linux to
the login screen. I may want to reboot immediately to win2k but there are no
options appearing in the reboot / halt options at the login screen. However,
if I login to my account then immediately log out, the options appear ( linux,
safemode, windows etc.)

Is there some way to set these options at boot up so I don't have to login and
out to get them to appear?

Thanks and regards,

You'll probably need to sure you install the kernel source for the running
version you have and since there were updates for 9.1 it's easiest to open a
super user terminal and type:

urpmi kernel-source enter

It should install the correct version and dependencies for you. If you haven't
installed an update kernel yet do that first by leaving out the -source above
then install the source. Then run

lilo -v enter

in the same terminal after you have installed the packages to have access to
the new kernel and when that's all done type

reboot enter

to use it.

I'm still too much in a hurry, sorry.

No,

The fixed kernel is in the updates directory on the same site though..
I didn't load it because I am thinking of trying packet writing on the

If you want the LG resolved version, you'll probably have to wait till
