'what the hell' and went to work.

Here are the steps I took:

 - made a new (unformatted) partition with PM 5.0. it's 2.5gb at the end of
a 20.5gb drive, and the only drive in my system.

 - booted from my MDK install cd, went thru the expert install. it ended up
being about 1.5gb of packages, using the extensions cd. also, i chose to
install grub on /hde (not /hde1 or anything else, just /hde). oh yeah, my
hard drive is on a connector that's labeled as IDE3 (out of 4
 connectors). 3 and 4 are for ata/66 and 1 and 2 are for ata/33, so that's
why the device is /hde instead of /hda.

 - rebooted after install, could load windows just fine.

 - rebooted the computer, started into linux just fine.

 - i can access my windows files in linux.

 - i can use my soundblaster live.

 - i can use my Logitech Mouseman + and the wheel just fine.

 - i think that's a good portion of the topics discussed on this forum. :)

anyway, just felt like sharing my success story. i've decided not to mess

[newbie] It's out!!!!!!!! (7.1)

2000-06-06 Per discussione Mark Potochnik

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/pr-helium.php3
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/71feat.php3

We are very pleased to announce the immediate availability
of Linux-Mandrake 7.1 (Helium).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to build-on and refine the many innovations
first introduced in version 7.0 and adds many new

features certain to please both beginners and experts alike.

The Linux-Mandrake 7.1 GPL archive now spans one or two Cd-Roms to bring
you the best and most up-to-date applications

available.

The 7.1 highlights include: support for multiple Cd-Roms at installation
time, a new journalized filesystem, a highly tuned Apache web

server and a web-based configuration tool that allows remote configuration
of a Linux-Mandrake system through a network.

"Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is our latest offering which provides a complete and
powerful operating system ideal for most needs - from the

home user to the demands of an enterprise with high-performance servers,
and all at low cost. With the ergonomic improvements and

server solutions provided with this release, Linux-Mandrake 7.1 has a great
chance of becoming the new Linux standard for both

enterprise and home use." declared Jacques Le Marois, President of MandrakeSoft.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 is now available for download from many locations throughout
the Internet. The boxed version, including

commercial applications, printed manuals and support will be available
in retail outlets at the end of June, 2000.

Here's a sampling of some of the most noteworthy benefits:

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 introduces a new menuing system. Applications now appear
in the same categories under all graphical

environments and update automatically as new packages are installed or
removed.

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 offers the new Reiser journalized file system as an
option within the new DrakX graphical installer and

after installation with DiskDrake, the graphical hard drive partitioning
application.

A highly customized version of Webmin is included. Webmin uses the familiar
interface of a web browser to easily setup user

accounts, configure Apache, DNS, FTP, view system statistics and most other
system/server tasks. Webmin can be used

remotely from another PC and even from other operating systems simply by
using a web browser.

Apache 1.3.12 is enhanced with the latest high-performance offerings from
the "Accelerating Apache Project" and provides

out-of-the-box support for Php3, Perl and Ssl extensions.

Cutting-edge XFree 4.0 servers with new modular architecture is available
in the "Expert" installation class, XFree 3.3.3.1 is

standard for other classes.

The Grub user-friendly bootloader is now provided as default. Lilo is an
optional bootloader in an "Expert" install. Both Grub

and Lilo now overcome the 1024-limit.

Helix Code Gnome improvements are incorporated into the Linux-Mandrake
7.1 Gnome-Sawfish desktop environment.

DrakFont is our new open-source font manager for Linux-Mandrake 7.1. This
utility provides an easy and convenient way to

manage fonts on a Linux system. DrakFont can add, remove and even retrieve
Ms-Windows fonts (if located on the same

machine) and make these fonts available to Linux applications.

Kernel 2.2.15 with Linux-Mandrake extensions (secure kernel, supermount
option).

Ata 66 (Udma 66) is supported for users seeking the highest-performance
from Ide hard drives.

i810-based mainboards are now supported in Linux-Mandrake 7.1.

Enhanced USB support for modems, printers, Zip drives, keyboards and mice.

"Wheel" mice are fully functional within most applications (Netscape, Gnome,
Kde, many others).

Linux-Mandrake 7.1 continues to provide features that aren't available
in any other Linux

distributions such as Supermount (transparent access to removable media),
LSec (Linux security

levels), multi-language support and processor optimizations. Try Linux-Mandrake
7.1 today and

see for yourself why Linux-Mandrake is becoming the preferred choice for
both new and

advanced users alike.

Hey, don't go blaming it on the hardware now. It's pretty clear that
Linux
is not an easy ride to install, no matter how stable it may be
afterwards.
I made sure ahead of time that my stuff was completely Linux comaptable.
Asus MB, Advansys SCSI, HP 810 Printer, 20 gig HD (ata off for now),
G400 Video (was on the Mandrake list), Yahama CDwriter, Plextror
CD,
USR/3com external modem, SB Live!, etc etc.
Mandrake install was click click click, Real Player was typing
a couple simple lines,
Word Perfect Office 2000 was a click click click and it's running.
No compileing, configuring lilo tweaking, this and that...
Linux does not have to be complicated. It can be simple.
There is no reason that it has to be anymore.
If they want more hardware Linux support, they are going to have to
make it for the
people (like me), that don't want to become software engineers.
They shouldn't have to be.
That is probably the biggest thing that I feel that Linux software
writers should
work on this year.. AND MUCH thanks to those people that are doing
it

It's not exaxtly "fault". It't just that Linux being a newer OS, and having
less users, it stands to reason that it will have less harware support.

Of course Win doen't really have any hardware support, it comes from

IMO, as much as I like it.I don't RECOMMEND to anybody to
change over to Linux. They would have to have a REAL desire to change,
and I warn them about the frustrations. A couple of people I have told NOT to
change.
I don't wan't to scare them away. Linux needs another year or so before I feel
it is ready
for the general public. I am here as more of a "consumer" user, but I

You are basically right. BUT...
The support for the new

And there are things that Linux does that Win can't...

.it is mostly in ALPHA or BETA right now for ALL'nix's. Linux
is catching up...probably about another year or so ofdevelopment, and
Linux can/will rival M$ for a larger market share of OS's.
But until then, I notice ALOT of people sending to this list that
want/needDUAL boot to an M$ version, or people saying they are not at

When WP office for Linux comes out that will be the big switch
from playing with Linux to USING it

So if M$ is SOO bad...why do people that swear by Linux, and
swear ATM$ continue using it for things like browsing, DVD, USB,

Does linux 7.0 support DVD roms? I have a very new computer with some of
the latest hardware and I just wanted to know if it was supported. Thank
you

No... The DVD industry is fighting any chance for you to get your chance to
get DVD running on Linux

According to http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi?make=Canonformat=full

The Cannon BJC-6000 is a "papaerweight"

Reported to work
on Usenet by Jan Harmsen; may well be "perfect" - if so please fix! May only
run at 720x720? Try the 610 Uniprint drivers, too. I ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
changed the functionality to paperweight after finding no success on Linux
2.3.39 with a known good parport setup (BJ-210SP works). With gs I tried the
bjc600 driver with no joy. echo yes /dev/lp0 failed to respond and needed a
break to get the prompt back. lpr of ascii caused no action from printer, and
the job stayed in the queue indefinitely, with lpq claiming that the printer was
printing. When I put the 210SP back everything worked. During the tests I
compiled a kernel with plug+play turned on but no plug+play device was detected
at boot. I think she's a dud.Note: printer doesn't print plain
text.Refill: cartridge

And the HP 722C
only worls partially...

works in bw only.Refill: cartridge

proofread.Driver: Ghostscript:
-sDEVICE=pbm2ppa # (600x300 BW)No autoprobe info -
Please add using Ed Printer link!

Ok. As I mentioned in my
rant yesterday, I have a printing problem. I run on a Compaq Presario

Win98se. Everything I have tested seems to work with the exception of
printing.After installation, I went to
Printtool and defined a printer (HP Deskjet 722C before I found out it was
was Win printer). I told the program to send out a test page both to
the spooler and to the port. I received a message stating that the
test page printed. Printer response,
nothing.I tried it with a Canon
BJC6000 which I found from the printing Howto site is supposed to
work. Same response. I don't get any kind of activity from the
printer at all. I checked out some books and followed the advice
there. I did a dmesg from a console window and found that parport
recognized both of my printer ports and even recognized the proper printer
attached to LPT1 (P0).

Hey! Real men don't read instructions! :-)
MarkP

If you people would read the documentation that comes with EVERY version of
LINUX you could probably answer about 90 percent of the RE-ITERATED stupid
questions that get asked. Get with the program people. Look in you HOWTO's
that come on the CD's. They are also installed on your hard disk if you
told it to when you installed Linux.

Is there anyplace I can just spend $2 to get a copy, rather than spend a
month downloading?

MarkP

I´m really sorry.

I´d tried this server too and I can read in getright.

"This server does not support resuming"

Please. Could you mail me another Server.

 Thanks.

A common newbie dilemma is "Where do I turn for help?" Instead of calling
his/her question "stupid," it would be much more productive if we pointed
this person in the right direction toward the answer.

Another problem

Where do I get help when my computer won't work?

After loading Caldera Linux once Lilo was screwed up so I couldn't use
either Wdoz or Linux

Had to spend $50 for a call to get it up and working...

[newbie] Hardware Compatability...

2000-01-09 Per discussione Mark Potochnik

Is the hardware list on the mandrake
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3a little out of date?
I'm planning a conversion to Linux soon and have seen my Yahama 6416 listed
on as being Linux compatable
on other sites. I have also seen the HP 812C printer as being fully Linux
compatable, however it's not listed on
the Mandrake site

Is this fully supported by Mandrake Linux I'm assuming that
compatability is part of the linux Kernal

I have 2 CD ROMs in my computer... Will Linux recognize both?

Thanks
