Yep. I ended up having to take the thing apart. Talk about a pain in
the @55! I have one very small screw and one somewhat small screw in
the top drawer of my desk. No idea where they are/were supposed to go,
but I can get on my new machine running win98SE. Turns out to be an
AMD K6/2 233MHz machine with 128 MB RAM and a whopping 4GB Hard Drive.

Anyone care to take a guess as to what my next post will be?

(HINT: Does anyone know what use this machine could possibly have ?)

[newbie] BIOS password on a Compaq Presario 1275

2005-01-19 Per discussione Deep Thinker
Hello All,

I have a friend that has given me several older machines because she
no longer needs them. For one reason or another these machines will
not work. Either bad hard drives or cracked screens or whatever.

The one machine she gave me that may be of some use is a Compaq
Presario 1275. In her words ...

My husband used that computer for business. He put a password on it
so if anyone stole it they would be able to use it. I think he put a
password on it so I couldn't see the emails he was writing to his
little hussy girlfriends he had on the side. I didn't need a computer
to tell me he was cheating on me.

TMI, but I got a free computer out of it. Seems she got that along
with the house and other things in the divorce.

Long story short, the machine still has the CMOS or BIOS password on
it. I plan to make it a simple workstation to learn and play on (of
course installing Mandrake on it).

How do I get in?

[newbie] Just installed 10.1 official from 3 ftp'd isos

2004-12-24 Per discussione Deep Thinker
Hello everyone,

 Happy Holidays.

I have just installed Mandrake 10.1 official from 3 iso discs downloaded.

Question 1. The machine is a Gateway profile. The only
network/Internet connection will be through a 3Com PCMCIA Card
(3CRPAG175). What steps do I need to take to make this work, or should
it be autodetected?

Question 2. This machine will primarily be for kids learning about
computers, how to type, word processing, and of course, playing games.
I noticed that the Firefox browser is not included in this
installation. How do I go about getting this, and the other programs I
may need safely installed on the machine.

Thanks for any help...

[newbie] 3Com Wireless PCMCIA card to work on Gateway Profile

2004-08-23 Per discussione Thinker
I have just installed Mandrake 10.0 on a Gateway Profile 3. For anyone
unfamiliar with this model, take a look at
http://products.gateway.com/products/GConfig/prodDetails.asp?
system_id=prf5m1seg=sb

Anyway, these machines have PCMCIA slots like laptops and I have a 3Com
Wireless card (3CRPAG175) that worked flawlessly when this machine had
Windows XP home on it. The only info I could find was this
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?
selected=5sort=fsizesku=3CRPAG175.

We have decided to look into Linux as an alternative to Windows XP for
all of our future workstations. This Profile is being used as a 'test
subject'. The 10/100 Network is working fine as well as everything else
except the wireless card. Can anyone offer any help or advice on how to
get this working?

Thanks in advance

[newbie] Email, Calendar, Scheduling, Address Book, synchronization (without Outlook)

2004-08-17 Per discussione Thinker
Hello All,
I have a client with 5 machines/users on a peer to peer network. The
only network resource they share is access to the Internet. About an
hour ago, he asked me to help him set up email addresses for the 5
people in the office. He visited a friend that has an exchange server
and all of the employees are using outlook. He asked me if I could set
his office up the same way.

After going over the potential security risks associated with using
Exchange and Outlook, I think I finally have him convinced that
Outlook/Exchange is a bad idea. He is now giving me the opportunity to
come up with more secure alternatives. This is where I need the help.

He wants to be able to open the program or website and schedule a
meeting with the people that he needs to attend. Those people should in
turn receive an email (or whatever notice possible) stating the meeting
has been scheduled, who scheduled it and should be allowed to confirm
that they will be there.

There should be a universal address book that allows you to associate
birthdays and anniversaries with contacts and those birthdays and
anniversaries should show up on the calendar.

They already have PCs or laptops which are either running Windows XP or
Windows 2000. They have a spare machine that I could install Linux on
if need be, but the users will still have to run Windows on their
machines.

If there is a web based solution for all of this, they can get the web
space if needed. The main thing is, he wants to be able to sync all of
this with his Handspring Treo.

I am hoping for a 'lower cost' solution. Lower cost as in a lot closer
to free. Something I could just install on a spare machine and let it
run; or something I could install on a web server.

Any ideas? Is there such an animal?

[newbie] Dropped DSL for Cable, now I need a firewall/router

2004-08-02 Per discussione Thinker
Hello All,
I just got rid of DSL. Changed to cable and I am now using a modem
provided by my cable company. I've had to call for support three times
already because of connectivity issues. Needless to say, I was not
happy when the tech from my cable company told me he could see my
machine over the network. Also, the modem I have will only allow me to
connect to one computer.

I would like to use my Linux box as a firewall/router. I remember
seeing a few articles about this a while back but I did not bookmark
them (and that was several installations ago). I have a spare machine
just sitting around doing nothing and I have plenty of spare network
cards, etc. I would like a good comprehensive, explain this to me like
I am 4, step-by-step instruction on how to create this and make it as
secure as possible. I need the cable modem to go into the box and have
the box handle the fire-walling and handing out of IP's to my two other
machines as well as my wireless access point.

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Forms (typewriter is dead)

2004-07-15 Per discussione Thinker
Hello All,
My question is about forms. We are currently using a few forms in our
daily routines that require the use of a typewriter. After sitting here
and watching one of the business office managers spend 15 minutes
typing up a form and then another 10 going back and 'whiting out' the
mistakes that were made, I feel that I need to do something to fix
this.

I was thinking I need to create an HTML form that can be filled out,
and when the submit key is clicked, I need the values to automatically
appear in the correct places on a preexisting word document to be
printed off.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to how to do this, possible
resources or better ideas?

Thanks,

[newbie] review of updating proceedures

2004-05-01 Per discussione Thinker
Hello all,

I have been out of the loop for a bit. I just want to make sure that I
have this correct before I update my Mandrake box...

1. From the Desktop type 'ctrl+alt+F1'
2. Login as root
3. Type 'urpmi.update -a'. then wait.
4. Type 'urpmi --auto-select' and follow the instructions.
5. After the update is complete, type 'alt+F1' then, reboot the machine.
Is this order correct?
Is there more that I should do, or am I doing too much?
How often should I run these commands?
Also, what command can I use to get a current listing of the urpmi
sources I am using?

Yeah, follow the widely posted instructions on setting up the software
sources
for the version of Mandrake you run. For these trinkets and toys you
often
need more than just the disks, contrib, plf, Charles Edwards page,
etc..

Here's a hint on where to find apollon for Mandrake 10:

However, seeing as 10.0rc2 is about to hit the mirrors, you might as
well skip the upgrade and just go straight to 10.0RC2. Unless you're

For application updates:

1. Open 'konsole'.
2. Type 'su' (and your password).
3. Type 'urpmi.removemedia -a'.
4. Go to http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php; and follow
   the instructions there (choose 'cooker').

OK.. I chose cooker.. but what about these other options?

1. Show base distro sources?
2. Show specific sources too?
And what should I do when it asks me to select a mirror? I have
selected several mirrors only to find that either they were not there,
not functioning or contained software with bad signatures. Does anyone
have any suggestions as to a good mirror containing valid signatures
and complete software?

 Copy and paste the
three lines you get into 'konsole' (and press 'Enter' so that
the last line is executed too).
5. Type 'urpmi.update -a'. Wait! :)
Not to be picky but since he just added the media the freshest
hdlist.cz is
already there. This step can be skipped _only_ when you just added a
software
source.

6. Type 'urpmi --auto-select' and follow the instructions.

Each time you want to update the applications, follow step
1, 2, 5 and 6 above. You might want to add '--auto' in step
6 to avoid answering any questions.
Note: 'cooker' is unstable. Sometimes the updates may break some
applications. Just wait a day, and then do another update.

Also, is there a way to have, say, more than one source for main, more
than one for contrib, and more than one for updates.. to make the
downloads go faster possibly?

Lastly, is there a command to type once this is done to update the
system. I am switching back to Mandrake from using SuSE for about year
now. I suppose I am looking for something along the lines of
'SuSEconfig'?

Just a few questions.

1. I thought this installation would include a 2.6.x kernel by default.
I didn't see anywhere in the installation process where it asked me to

2. Is there a special mirror location I need to give rpmdrake for

1. What is the most effective way to get the latest and greatest if not
FTP install?
2. Is cooker stable? I am not familiar with how cooker works or is
different from the normal distribution. Can someone fill me in on this?

Thanks,

If you want the latest and greatest you may as well go directly to
cooker.
Download this

ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/
i586/images/boot.iso

burn it to a disk and boot from it. You should be able to upgrade or
do a full
install, but it'll be awfully slow doing an ftp install over the
Internet.
Even with my bandwidth (10 Mbit/sec down, 2 Mbit/sec up rated
maximums) I
avoid it as much as possible.

Good luck.

 To your menu problem:

Log out, or don't log-in as user from a fresh boot. From the log-in screen use
Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log-in there as root. Then run the following commands:

(Note: ALL commands are one liners. You can assume there are only single
spaces between flags and options, mail client word wrap kills that though.)

 urpmi.addmedia

 ../base/hdlist.cz Enter

This did not work. I tried it twice and all I got was a help menu. Since
the first command didn't work, I didn't go any further.

I did Clt+Alt+F1, logged in as root and ran
update-menus -v

Then Clt+Alt+F7 and all was well.

For the CD-RW problem; is that drive a re-badged LG by any chance? If so you
likely killed it, which you would know if you had read any of the multitude
of posts, or the warnings on the Mandrake site, in the past three weeks.

I read the multitude of post and warnings on the Mandrake site.
Remember, I am one of the few that keeps asking when the ISO's will be
released with the fix (which you would know if you had read the
multitude of posts I have made concerning the desire to install 9.2).

My drive says HP so I assumed it was an HP. However, now my drive isn't
even showing up in the BIOS. When I boot the machine, the lights come on
but there is no mention of it in the BIOS (used to be IDE Secondary
Master) and no desktop item for it in KDE (after the installation there
were two CDROM icons on the desktop, now there is just one).

Still, I just physically removed it from the machine. No mention of
anything LG.

Where should I go from here on the drive? Is this a new issue or am I

[newbie] Download Mandrake and make discs

2003-11-05 Per discussione Thinker
Hello All,

I wish to download Mandrake 9.2 and make installation CD's so that I
can install it on two of my machines at home and one at work. I noticed
on the Mandrakelinux.com homepage that 9.2 is available for download.

When I get to the information page I can't seem to find the location of
the ISO's. (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3#iso )

All I am seeing on any mirror is the contents of the directory. Am I
supposed to download all of this and burn it to disk? If so, is there
some special way I should go about burning the contents of the directory
to make the disk bootable?

I would much rather have the ISO's (since that is what I used last time)
if they are available.

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Samba/NFS/SSH to access a Mandrake Box

2003-10-20 Per discussione Thinker
2nd try...

I am currently using SuSE 8.2 (ftp version). I have Mandrake 9.0(MDK)
installed on one box and Windows 2000 Professional (W2K)on another.

The ultimate goal is to use the SuSE 8.2 box for work and such until
SuSE 9.0 gets here. When the new SuSE gets here, I would like to have
the MDK box clean and available. In order to do that, I need to copy my
home directory from the MDK box to both the SuSE 8.2 box (for use of
files) and more importantly to the W2K box (since it is the only machine
with a working CD Burner).

I cannot get ssh server installed correctly on the Mandrake box. I can see the box in
LinNeighborhood but I cannot copy any files.

How do I 'share' a directory so that I can copy the contents to both the Windows and
SuSE 8.2 boxes?

What is the easiest way to do this?

Thanks in advance,

You did install a Mandrake RPM did you? It is part of the rpm install process

You can do it by hand easily enough
 As root

 ssh-keygen -q -t rsa -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key -C '' -N ''
(Note: that is two single quote characters. Not 1 double quote )

I typed this one and got the message:
bash: ssh-keygen: command not found

Is there a simpler way to do this? or rather, is there a way to
reinstall whatever I have missing using the CD's?

 chmod 600 /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
 chmod 644 /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub

the other links from google had similar results. How do I go about

You will then see the file system of the Suse machine displayed in konqueror,
and you can just frag and drop files into it..

You could probably do it from Suse to Mandrake too. I just do not know if Suse
include the kio_fish plugin for konqueror.

I tried this (going from SuSE to Mandrake)and did not get the same

My SuSE box is more up to date than my Mandrake box (I have KDE 3.1.4 on

kio_fish is a plugin for konqueror whuch uses sftp (secure ftp) to transfer
files between the machines. You can use it on any computer Linux/Unix or

because of the new hardware. This machine has a network card and it is

[newbie] OT--General Linux Questions

2003-08-14 Per discussione Thinker
I know this is a little off topic, but I was hoping to hear as many
opinions on these questions as possible.

1. After reading this article ...
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2001436280_linuxgroup08.html

I am left wondering; where does Intel stand in the debate? Are they
officially on the M$ side of things are are they attempting to play
neutral in all of this. I have never used an AMD processor and I wasn't
really planning on it, but if Intel is out to hurt Open Source, I will
have to change my stance.

2. After reading this article ...
http://www.vnunet.com/News/1142837

I am wondering, what about UnitedLinux? Isn't SCO part of an ongoing pro
Linux project with SuSE and others? Does SCO expect me to pay $699 for a
license for software they shipped me under the pretense that it was
'free'?

Honestly, I went to United Linux about 2 months ago and signed up for
the shipment of the free software discs. If I install them, and then pay
the $699 can I not sue them for fraud?

Just a few questions from a newbie trying to make sense out of all this
posturing.

Thanks for your time.

Re: [newbie] You guys all owe SCO $1399 for your Mandrake

2003-08-09 Per discussione Thinker
I have been watching this thread for a while and .. well, I may not know
much about Linux but I can say that ...

1. Being an American that is married to a German woman, everyone I know
drinks Warsteiner Dark at room temperature. They say it is not so much
that American beer is weak, it is more that they put too many
preservatives and other additives in it. And they say Americans like
their beer cold because they cant stand to taste it any other way. So I
am thinking Warsteiner Dark or Peach Schnapps chasers and you will all
be good to go.

2. Being an American from the great state of Tennessee I think all I
have to say is 'Corn in a Jar'. Those of you that know what I am talking
about would agree; this remedy and no one will be mowing anything
anytime soon.

3. As for the smaller condoms... Evolution dictates the size of the male
sexual organ. Nature tells us that we 'Americans' don't have to be
equipped for sex with farm animals,
I admit some of my countrymen may be a little smaller than you in the
Outback. We don't have the Sheepskin for sheep label here in the US.

So yes, I am sure you guys are a little bigger. Otherwise, I suspect you
guys would have some pretty pissed off sheep.

Now back to the show...

Re: [newbie] Need SWAP before FTP install of Madrake 9.1 on oldsystem (1 more try)

2003-07-30 Per discussione ThinKer
Posting this to the list in case anyone can help ...

thanks for the info Miark,

1. When I attempted to install SuSE 8.2, the installation alerted me
that I did not have enough system memory and prompted me to activate my
swap partition, which I did, and I was able to proceed with the
installation. That installation failed due to hangings in YaST, but I
was able to use my swap to run the installation program. So I guess I
need an 'addition' to the network.img boot disk that will allow me to
get to a shell and type a command to activate the swap?

2. On the idea of getting more RAM; this is an OLD machine. We are
talkin' 72 pin SIMMS here. I can't find anything below $30 for 16MB
module. I have never seen obsolete technology cost so much! Plus, this
machine has to have matching capacities in each slot. Dont ask me why,
but if I put a 4MB module in slot 0 and a 8MB module in slot 1, the
machine won't even boot.

Any help on this? Anyone? Please?

Swap space won't help you when it comes to installation--it's
memory that counts. (Not sure why, but I'd love to know.)

But if a working computer is worth another $10, I recommend buying
another stick of RAM. I bought a 64MB stick of PC133 a few weeks ago for
$8, including shipping. Pricewatch.com says you can do it right now
for $9. At any rate, it can be done for less than $10.

[newbie] New plans for old hardware.

2003-07-29 Per discussione ThinKer
Killing the attempt to get the Pentium 120 to do anything. I am
salvaging what I can and moving them to the New Plan.

I just got an old Dell Optiplex GX1 with a 450Mhz PII. I can probably
get 512 MB of RAM in it. I have (2) IDE 4.1 GB HDs, (1) IDE 1.2 GB HD,
(1) IDE CD ROM, and (2) 9.0 GB SCSI Drives with a controller card.

Here is what I have in my head. Please tell me I am not crazy. (or tell
me how crazy I am.)

1. I would like to install Both Debian and Mandrake 9.1 on it. M9.1
would be my main installation, but I would like to have Debian on it to
see what it is like and how it runs.

  a. Question: Can I create one swap partition and use it for both
installations?

  b. Question: What is the advantage of 9.1 over 9.0? When 9.2 comes out
can I just upgrade?

  c. Question: If I can put both (maybe 3 - SuSE 8.2?) distributions on
this machine, and later I decide that I really like one more than the
other, can I reclaim the space in the working OS?

2. I would like to run two monitors on this machine. It has a 4MB video
card built in, but I have an 8MB PCI video card that I can slap in it. I
would like to run two screens for web development programs and such.
(code on one, view on the other). Is this possible?

[newbie] Looking for options for a scrap PC

2003-07-25 Per discussione ThinKer
I posted a little while ago about this machine that I have 'inherited'
from a friend.

Proc: Pentium 120
RAM: 48MB (upgraded from 16)
Hard Drives: (1) 3GB and (1) 2GB

This machine has no CD ROM (and no space for it since there are 2 Hard
Drives) a Network Card and 3.5 inch floppy. It is currently running
Windows 95 and at one time was configured to boot to Windows NT 4.0
Workstation.

I would like to set this machine up to learn Linux. I already have a
machine running Mandrake 9.0 but I don't feel that I am learning
anything with it. I would like to get more familiar with the command
line, maybe run a webserver and mysql, a minimal desktop environment, if
any, etc. I would like to stay with mandrake, if this is posible. If
not, can someone recommend another distribution of Linux? As I said,
there is only the network card and the 3.5 inch floppy to install
anything.

I would also like advice on partitioning and swap space setup. I would
like to make the most of what I have. I dont see putting a lot of files
on this machine so I can use the space for memory or whatever.

I have no problem with deleting the win95 or whatever else is on this
machine.

URL's, advice, instructions, ideas welcome and appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

[newbie] Learning Linux on a Pentium ?

2003-07-23 Per discussione ThinKer
Hello All,

I've just inherited two very old machines (Original Pentium with 16MB
RAM each). I was wondering if there was anything I can download and
install on these machines. They are currently running Windows 95 and
they have Network cards already installed. I can put them on my network
and browse the Intenet. I would like to install some flavor of Linux.
Maybe a network or boot-floppy installation (since they only have 3.5
inch floppies) that will help me get more familiar with the way Linux
works.

In either case, I would like to backup all my work and reinstall from

only use Evolution, Netscape, and Quanta.

What exactly do I need to back up, and how should I go about backing it
up so that either Mandrake or Red Hat will be able to utilize my old
files?

[newbie] Treo 180 vs. Evolution (attempt overview - still unresolved).

2003-01-26 Per discussione ThinKer
My System: Mandrake 9 (2.4.19-16mdk kernel) on a 500 Mhz PIII with
256MB RAM. I am using KDE 3.0.3, Evolution 1.2.1

My PDA: Handspring Treo 180 (GSM phone/PalmOS PDA hybrid). The Treo
is running Palm OS 3.5. I use the USB connection to connect with my PC.
According to WebMin, my USB is set to start at boot and is currently
running. (MandrakeSoft, : usb,v 1.44). I know USB is running because ...

a. 'lsusb' gives Bus 001 Device 001: ID :
b. Mandrake Control Center--Hardware-- USB Controller shows
(82371AB PIIX4 USB)
--

This is what I have done so far.

1. At a shell, I typed 'ls /dev/usb' and got nothing.

2. I put the Treo in the cradle and pressed the hot sync button. Then
when I typed 'ls /dev/usb' again and got 'tts' in the directory.

3. I then created the symbolic link to /dev/pilot by typing the
following as root 'ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0 /dev/pilot'.

4. Started Evolution and went to Tools--Pilot Settings. Got the wizard
and hit next until the screen that gave me two options.
a. Yes, I've used sync software with this pilot before.
b. No, I've never used sync software with this pilot before.

If I click the No option, it gives me a slot to put a User Name and ID.
I am assuming I should use the 'Yes' option, since I have syncronized my
Treo with the Palm Desktop software it came with on my Windows machine,
and the device already has a username.

5. After I answered this and pressed NEXT on this final screen, I
pressed the hotsync button on the cradle. All of the icons on my desktop
flickered as if something was happening, but nothing ever transfered. I
got the error message, Could not examine the port for
Cradle(/devt/pilot). The port should point to a USB serial port. No such
file or directory (2)

When I go back now and type 'ls /dev/pilot' I get No such file or
directory.

My Treo keeps displaying the error message The connection between your
handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check
your setup and try again.

6. So now I decide to start over. I went to Tools--Pilot Settings on
Evolution and got the wizard. When Pilot Identification asked the yes or
No question I said yes, and right before I clicked next I typed
ls dev/pilot as root. I got the no such file or directory so I
created the symbolic link again by typing ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0
/dev/pilot again as root. Then I checked by typing ls dev/pilot and
the 'tts' was there. Then I clicked next on the pilot wizard and pressed
the hotsync button right after. Now I get a new error that says Failed
sending request to gpilotd.

Now I am stuck. What am I doing wrong or what haven't I done that I need
to do? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

TP

[newbie] I need help syncing my Handspring Treo USB with Linux (again)

2003-01-25 Per discussione ThinKer
Sorry to be a pest by asking this again but this is really important in
my Linux Evolution. One of the last steps in being windows free in my
daily computing is my ability to sync my contacts, to-do and calendar
with my PDA.
I searched Google for Treo USB to sync with Linux and I found nothing
useful.

I am running Mandrake 9 (2.4.19-16mdk kernel) on a 500 Mhz PIII with
256MB RAM. I am using KDE 3.0.1 Desktop, Evolution 1.2.1 and would
ultimately like to sync my Treo 180 USB with Evolution. I have Jpilot
and KPilot installed but I haven't been able to sync with either of
these programs.

My PDA is a Handspring Treo 180 (GSM phone/PalmOS PDA hybrid). The Treo is running

I need to use the USB connection to connect with my PC.

Re: [newbie] I need help syncing my Handspring Treo USB with Linux(again)

2003-01-25 Per discussione ThinKer
Terry,
When I tried to run 'usbview' I got command not found.
///

Adolfo,
I tried your method. Please See results inline

First of all, when I do a ls /dev/usb the only active USB port shown
is hid, the one used by the mouse.

When I do a ls /dev/usb after placing the Palm on the cradle and
pressing the hotsync button, then two entries are shown: hid and
 tts.

This worked. I got the 'tts' when I typed 'ls /dev/usb' after I pressed
the hotsync button.

I make sure to create as root the symbolic link /dev/pilot with:
 ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0 /dev/pilot

Did this(as root).

Subdirectories 0 and 1 of tts only appear when you hit the hotsync
 button on the cradle.

Next step is going to Evolution-Tools-Pilot Settings. A wizards
appears. Answer that this is the first time your going to use the
 software with the Pilot.

The wizard is giving me two options.
1. Yes, I've used sync software with this pilot before.
2. No, I've never used sync software with this pilot before.

If I click the No option, it gives me a slot to put a User Name and ID.
I am assuming I should use the 'Yes' option, since I have syncronized my
Treo with the Palm Desktop software it came with on my Windows macine,
and the device already has a username.

Press Next and press the hotsync button on the
cradle. It will recover the name and user id from the pilot. If it
fails, try again. Sometimes it takes three or four times to get this
 info from the Pilot.

After passing previous step, you should see an open window where you can
define your conduit settings. Enable synchronizing ToDo, Calendar,
Contacts (I also enable Memos) and that's it.

After I answered OK to this final screen, I got the error message,
Could not examine the port for Cradle(/devt/pilot). The port should
point to a USB serial port. No such file or directory (2)

When I go back now and type 'ls /dev/pilot' I get No such file or
directory.

My Treo keeps displaying the error message The connection between your
handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check
your setup and try again.

Now, press again the hotsync button on the cradle and you should get the
 data transfered to evolution.

I got nothing. Well, I am getting a little frustrated, but that doesn't
count. What should I do now?

You have to create a symbolic link to your pda USB port with:
 ln -s /dev/usb/tts/0 /dev/pilot
(this is my settings. Yours might be different).

Tried this. Nothing changed, it still doesn't work.

In my case, before turning on the pda, if I do a ls /dev/usb there is
only a subdirectory named hid (the one used by my usb mouse).

I did it and there was nothing. I am assuming because I don't have a USB
mouse.

After turning the pda on and doing again a ls /dev/usb I can see 2
subdirectories: hid and tts, this later one with 2 subdirectories: 0 and
 1.

After hitting the hot sync on my pda.. i still see nothing in the

I keep getting relocation error: pico: undefined symbol: stat when I
try to open a file.

Please help.

[newbie] no OpenOffice.org fonts on menus (at all)

2003-01-09 Per discussione ThinKer
Hello,

I recently decided to give openoffice.org a try for the first time to
create a .doc file for a proposal. When I clicked on the openoffice.org
writer link to application, the program appeared to start fine, but once
it opened up I noticed that there is no text on any of the menus in both
the opening dialog box and on the menus for the program.

1. How can I fix this, or should I go to the site and download and
install the program from scratch?

2. Is there another program for creating and manipulating M$ Office
related documents and presentations?

Thanks,

TP

[newbie] Registered Linux User ?

2003-01-09 Per discussione ThinKer
How does one become a registered Linux User? I have seen several
signatures at the bottoms of posting numbers indicating their
registration as a Linux User.

I want a number. How do I get one?

OK.. I see how this works. Star Trek Nemesis and US Foreign Policy get
all the replies and attention. Meanwhile, I ask a question that is very
much on topic(that yes, someone else has asked before but as I see it in
the archives, they didn't get an answer either) and I get banished to
search the archives?

Thats it. I am on my way to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] list so I can
get some help on fixing my OOOWriter.

This looks like the notorious OpenOffice fonts problem that came up on
this list earlier. Check the archives, and good luck!

1. Get to a shell, become root, and type the following...

 /etc/openoffice/openoffice.conf

2. Edit the UI_FONT=AUTO replace AUTO with Arial or whatever other
font you have and want to use.

3. Save, close, and open OOOWriter. You should have menus.

There, and no cast members were killed off in the typing of this email.

[newbie] how do I sync my Handspring Treo 180 USB ?

2003-01-02 Per discussione ThinKer
Hello,

My mobile phone/personal organizer is a phone/PDA hybrid Handspring
Treo 180 (Palm OS 3.5H) with USB cradle. I would like to be able to sync
it on my Mandrake 9.0 box with some equivalent software to the Palm
Desktop or even better with Evolution.

Of course Handspring's website was no help since they do not officially
support the OS and the HOWTO they link to leaves a lot to be desired.
Can someone tell me how I can go about syncing this palm handheld
device?

Thanks,

T.P.

Re: [newbie] Installing pico/PINE with problems

2003-01-01 Per discussione ThinKer
Part answer part 'nother question.

Pico is the text editor that comes with pine. I recently downloaded pine
from
http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/contrib/texstar/linux/distributions/mandrake/9.0/rpms/

When I installed pine, everything seemed to go as planned and I got no
errors. But when I try open a file, the editor opens but displays an
error message I do not understand.

pico: relocation error: pico: undefined symbol: stat

and then displays a shell prompt.

Any idea why? Ami I doing something wrong?

On FreeBSD I would just go to /usr/ports/ediors/pico and type make install.
Is there a simple way of installing sofware on Mandrake linux other than the
GUI that it comes with? The selection of software is fairly limited and does
 not incluled pico or edit.

Thanks, and sorry for the simple question.

BTW, I can't belive how good Mandrake Linux 9.0 is. Amazing. It is the
easiest operating system I have ever installed (Just as easy or maybe even
easier to install as Mac OS).

[newbie] automatic logout

2003-01-01 Per discussione ThinKer
Hello,

I asked this question a while back and got a clear answer as to what was
happening, but no clear answer on how to disable it.

When I walk away from my machine for what seems like more than 20
minutes(xlock and all) and then return to it, I have somehow been logged
off the system and have to log in again. I was told that this is a
security feature in Mandrake. Thats great. Now how do I disable it.
