[newbie] Printer Orientation

2004-09-02 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
Hello,

I've been having a problem here for a while and haven't really been overly
worried about it as I can usually just move to another machine and print.
Now though, it is getting beyond time to find a fix.

When I try to print, it prints, but always prints in landscape. That would be
fine if that is what I wanted. It isn't. It also only prints A4 width in
Landscape mode. When I want landscape it prints in portrait. What do I need
to delete and reconfigure?

I've deleted the printer many times. I've reinstalled ML10 many times. I've
wiped everything but my home partition many times. I'm now using 10.1 cooker
and it is still happening. The other machines, 1 ML10, 1 ML10.1 and 1 Win98
all print to the same printer and they're fine. What's the matter with my
bloody machine?

[newbie] firefox and Java

2004-08-07 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
Hello All,

I'm getting this from my bank:

This page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that can only
be viewed with the appropriate plugin.

It wants me to download the Java Run Time Environment (JRE) v1.3 Plug-in with
Java 2 support. I click the Linux version and Install Now. It seems to
install, but everytime I go back to the page it wants me to dowload it again.
I'm never going to get my bills paid at this rate. Any ideas why it either
isn't being installed properly or Firefox isn't seeing the installation
properly.

Re: [newbie] After running chkrootkit

2004-08-03 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
Bryan, Charlie, Lyvim,

 chkrootkit -x lkm

Reading, trying to understand and have come to the conclusion that I'm not
compromised. Why? I'll try to explain to the best of my meagre abilities.

I ran chkrootkit and the following showed up.

Checking `lkm'... You have    48 process hidden for readdir command
You have    48 process hidden for ps command
Warning: Possible LKM Trojan installed

I wondered about the version I was running, so I uninstalled whatever it was
(don't remember which ver) and did urpmi chkrootkit. Ran it and nothing was
detected. That ver was .42b. Unisntalled it and found the other version I
was running and installed that one. It is .43. It found the problem. When
I eventually got the command running that Bryan showed me the things that
showed up were all to do with my Bittorrent Client, Artsd and Firefox.bin.

I shut down the Bittorrent Client and all but three processes dissapeared.
They were the two tabs in Firefox and one artsd.

So, do you think I am kitted or am I, as I suspect, worrying about nothing
this time. I have learnt something this day, so your help isn't for nothing.
I appreciate it all. Thanks guys.

I thought I'd saved the link but now I can't find it. I've been to the

Trevor; Yes. Go to this link, and download whichever version you prefer,
make a point to look at the version with large file support.

 http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm#Download

The only other ways to access linux in this case would be through a
shared FAT32 partition, or Samba/NFS using another system.

Personally, I always set up a FAT32 partition on all my dual-boot
systems and remap my email and document folders, as well as OpenOffice
 location mappings to that partition.

It also has the benefit of allowing me to store any linux and windows
downloads to that partition, so I always have them available, should I
ever upgrade or re-install either OS.

Thunderbird has the added advantage of being able to use the exact same
email folders for Linux and/or Windows, so that no matter which OS I'm
currently using, all my email is available.

Sorry if that's not much help right now, but ever since i started doing
my setups that way, it's been pretty flawless.

 HTH.

 Right, well, I've got somewhere!

Great, but it didn't help here. I changed my setup and it still happened

I managed to mangle the whole mail system, but hey, saved me having to
delete them. One day I'll get some of them back, when I work out what I

Anyway. If I tell it not to delete messages from the server then there is
no problem! Can anyone add that to the equation and help me/us??

I am almost at the top of the hill stage. She realises all of
what you have mentioned. The genealogical software she uses isn't
available on Linux. She has certainly been talking about wanting
   to use linux.

What about gramps (genealogical software) as a replacement

If it's a case of too much work already done to start again, why not
consider running her software under wine, if it will, or win4lin? I
have Generations 8 running under win4llin.

It shouldn't be too hard though. Export a gedcom from one program and import
into Gramps. Thats what we have had to do there though.

Other problem is that if you are using 9.1 then you will need to get the
gramps file from Mandrake Club. The latest release of gramps on the gramps
site won't install under 9.1

Re: [newbie] Printer BJ-200e does not work in Mandrake 9.1

2003-06-08 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
FD,

I don't know what to tell you. We use the BJ-200 driver for our BJ-200ex and
it's working fine. Are you using the Ghostscript driver in CUPS? or didn't
you go down that far under the BJ-200?

The Canon printer BJ-200e was working perfectly for month in 9.0
Once upgraded to 9.1, there is only the driver for BJ-200
 available.

I tried it under CUPS, the printer proceeds to printing and everything
seems to work as previously, but nothing actually appear on the paper (new
ink cartridge, work just before the update).

 Any suggestions ?

 Thanks a lot

 FD

P.S. Oh by the way, this is for a neighbor that I convinced to register to
MandrakeClub 2 months ago, telling her it would help improve the distro.
She is less than stellar happy not being able to print anymore.

Michael,

I am almost at the top of the hill stage. She realises all of what you have
mentioned. The genealogical software she uses isn't available on Linux. She
has certainly been talking about wanting to use linux.

This was one of my genealogically deprived spouses problems as well. We'd
been using PAF, but have since gotten used to GRAMPS under ML9.1 and it's
getting better. It's free, the author is always ready and willing to help,
fix, patch or whatever is needed. You would have to use the ML9.1 rpm for
this as the one from the gramps site wasn't compiled to use 9.1 properly.
Their still catching up. At least get it installed and use both for a while
and see how she likes it. It's all my wife uses now.

Can you tell me how you have configure the urpmi update? I have so many

Allan,

A few years ago I had a surplus 386SX (16Mhz??) with 1MB ram. There was
a version of Unix (I think this was before Linux was available) that I
did manage to run on it, albeit only in text mode. It either was BSD or
 was based on BSD.

Maybe you could find one of those old versions floating around. That
was in 1995 or 1996 so God only knows what version it was or where you
could find it now. I also remember the installation being a bloody
 nightmare.

Minix (mini unix). I remember being taught that at college. Funny how I
somehow ended up with a copy. Too bad I still don't have it though.

Re: [newbie] Trojan alert - Australian IP (connect.com.au)

2003-01-19 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes

The following is a third of my logfile. Is this not normal for you
folks? Why do so many people get so worried when something shows up.

Why? well just read what I added to almost all your submitted port
attacks. Sorry to say this, but this is ignorance. You are being probed
from all sides my trojans, and you don't realise it.

I asked if it was normal and I asked why people get so worried. What I meant
by the second part that I probably didn't explain as well as I could have was
why people worry so much if they have their firewalls setup to block those
ports. Asking the question I asked in itself implies that I don't know
something and I'm trying to find out. Whether or not you are a newbie to
linux like myself or an expert I don't know. From the information you gave me
I'd expect you are someone quite knowledgeable about linux. If this is true,
then help me by all means, but it would brighten my day no end if you would
desist with the use of the word 'ignorance'.

Therse aren't scrip-kiddies, but documented trojans, probably most are
from Windows, but like the one I had... Redhat Linux. It's not normal
for people to try ftp into you, or fetch mail from your server... but
look at the list of trojans... there are many for those 2 ports.

With the firewall setup and blocking those ports (I certainly hope it is)
aren't I just getting a logfile full of attempted probes?

From my DI-704P Ethernet Broadband Routers Log:
port 137 = (UDP) - Bugbear, Msinit, Opaserv, Qaz
port 1433 = Voyager Alpha Force

port 22 = InCommand, Shaft, Skun
port 25 = Antigen, Barok, BSE, Email Password Sender , Gip, Laocoon,
Magic Horse, MBT , Moscow Email trojan, Nimda, Shtirlitz,
 Stukach, Tapiras, WinPC
port 3128 = Reverse WWW Tunnel Backdoor , RingZero
 port 3389 = nothing I can find
 port 443 = Slapper
 port 445 = Nimda
 port 515 = MscanWorm, Ramen
port 6346 = nothing I can find, I believe it's the giFT port
Just thought I would let you know ;-) Let's just hope you have the
 non-logged ports closed ;-)

I know I'm about to open up a can of worms here, but can we not let it get out
of control people. Ok, here goes. Is there a 'decent' online security site
that could check my ports? Properly?

under linux - but doesn't matter - going to get a better one after Xmas
is over and done with and all the computer junk heads my way for
resale...(grin) That's the time I tend to upgrade my home network/home
 server/workstation...

I'm shooting for an HP scanner next time around...USB, of course...

I have a HP 4400c and haven't been able to get it working, so if anyone of you
can tell me how this could be accomplished under 9.0, I'd be ever so
grateful.

Trevor

Re: [newbie] flash in Konqueror

2002-11-11 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
Ok, at last I get to help someone. Payback time. :^)

Download the flash plugins. I have a file called flash_linux.tar.gz that I
got hold of from the flash site I was taken to the last time I tried to
access a flash site. You need to get two files out of this archive.

libflashplayer.so
and
ShockwaveFlash.class

and put them into /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/plugins directory.

Then go into Konqueror, SettingsNetscape Plugins and add the above path.
When you've done that click 'scan for new plugins' and wallah It had
better work or I'm gonna look silly. Let me know how you go.

how does one install and enable the flash plugin for Konqueror? It
was very easy to do in Mozilla but I prefer to use Konqueror.

Hopefully someone will answer that question. I have been using Phoenix
which is Mozilla Lite, but would love to go back to Konqueror.

Trevor

Regards This program will help you to determine which I2C/SMBus modules you
need to
load to use lm_sensors most effectively.
You need to have done a `make install', issued a `depmod -a' and made sure
`/etc/conf.modules' (or `/etc/modules.conf') contains the appropriate
module path before you can use some functions of this utility. Read
 doc/modules for more information.
Also, you need to be `root', or at least have access to the /dev/i2c[-/]*
files
for some things. You can use prog/mkdev/mkdev.sh to create these /dev files
if you do not have them already.
If you have patched your kernel and have some drivers built-in you can
safely answer NO if asked to load some modules. In this case, things may
seem a bit confusing, but they will still work.

IF THIS IS AN IBM THINKPAD, PRESS CTRL-C NOW!
IBM Thinkpads have a severely broken i2c/SMBus implementation, just scanning
the bus will break your thinkpad forever!

We can start with probing for (PCI) I2C or SMBus adapters.
You do not need any special privileges for this.
Do you want to probe now? (YES/no): yes

To continue, we need module `i2c-dev' to be loaded.
If it is built-in into your kernel, you can safely skip this.
i2c-dev is already loaded.

We are now going to do the adapter probings. Some adapters may hang halfway
 through; we can't really help that. Also, some chips will be double detected;
we choose the one with the highest confidence value in that case.
If you found that the adapter hung after probing a certain address, you can
specify that address to remain unprobed. That often
 includes address 0x69 (clock chip).

Any ideas?

 Dang...and to think that I got my MDK 9.0 on Monday...(for $9.80AUD

far ahead of the rest of the world? (g)

Haven't you noticed that at times when installing it will ask for the 3rd CD,
the internationl one? That you don't have? And neither do I, as the third
CD that comes with the mag is not the third CD it's asking for. I'd rather
have the full version as this one is just a stopgap measure. Nice though.

Re: [newbie] wine

2002-11-05 Per discussione Trevor Rhodes
When I received errors like that, it was because I was trying to run a
program via WINE from a directory that wasn't mapped in WINE. In other
words, you're trying to run a program in directory A, but there is no Drive
mapping in the WINE config file for directory A.

I'm having trouble getting one program to work. It's called Homecook from
Mountain Software. It's the last thing keeping me with M$ on a second
machine. If someone can tell me how to get that working under Wine I'd be
ecstatic.

Re: [newbie] Desktop Shortcut

Trevor; If you're trying to read the output of the command, open a
console (shell/terminal) , and run the command manually. The output
should be the same whether it's in a terminal or not.

If you're not seeing any output in the terminal, then the command is
completing normally, and is not supposed to generate output.

I've run it manually, but would like the ease of having the link on the
desktop. Could I have a terminal link on the desktop with the command as the
input?

One of the things that _no_one_ should be concerned about any longer is
 compatibility with MS Office.

This is absolutely impossible for me. I exchange so many files
(spreadsheet, doc and presentation) with so many customers and other
staff members that unfortunately Office has become the standard by
which we exchange compatible files. Not being compatible with MS Office -
at least in my case - is unthinkable.

I know I'm coming in late on this thread, but Star Office handles this very
thing beautifully. ALL of it.

We have one computer with four logins. How would we do a multiuser install
