Re: NPNY: $312.01...
If I had a product for sale and sold it for $100, the transaction would be complete. It's up to me to make sure all my costs and markup are covered when I sell my product. If I failed to price my item at a higher price, and the person who bought my product saw a way to do that, that's called retail. The issue then becomes is the seller licensed to sell. A CD costs a dollar. if you buy i bulk or manufacture the things, it can cost as little as $.06. So, if I put my band's music on it, that I've already paid for the recording of, and resell it for $9.99, I'm doing the same thing. Profit is not a crime. Illegal reselling of something you don't OWN is. On May 8, 2006, at 12:53 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just to play devil's advocate: If you had a product for sale and you sold it for $100 and then went onto a website like Ebay (or Stubhub) and you saw that same exact product being sold by the person who bought it from you for $300-$500 (and the product sold) wouldn't you say to yourself, well that's what the product is worth then. If the market will pay that much, then why aren't I charging that much? I think these artists get sick and tired of seeing the scalpers make more money per ticket then they do. And I don't blame them. If he sold these tickets for $100, don't you think some fool would buy them off Ebay for 3 times that? Or maybe 5 times that? So why shouldn't that money go to the artist? GREAT point about radio. Internet radio (and the internet in general, actually) seems to be his best friend, and Universal Motown appears to be okay with that. As much as I dig Corrine, and have played her album to death...I have to suggest Alice Smith to the list. her album is one of the best things I've heard this year. Check her out. http://www.myspace.com/alicesmith On Jul 20, 2006, at 9:20 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: We went to see Corinne Bailey Rae at The Bowery Ballroom a few weeks back...I definitely dig her voice...VERY Norah Jones if you like that style of singer. She just needs to have chairs for her performances...anyone remember Norah Jones at The 2002 Celebration? Good stuff just laid back and mellow. Also, her last choice of soundtrack for life...Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun...that is in my top 10 and has definitely been a part of my life soundtrack. Anyone who hasn't heard it...go! now!! Get it!! And don't sleep on Green Eyes. -Portia In a message dated 7/20/2006 8:57:22 A.M. However for those looking for some good music check out Corrine Bailey Rae, her voice is smooth and velvety and her songs deserve attention. Here is a Q&A session from Netscape Entertainment News. Q&A With Corinne Bailey Rae With her self-titled debut album already a Number 1 hit in her native England, Corinne Bailey Rae is set for similar success in North America. Her single 'Put Your Records On' is quickly becoming one of the songs of the summer and the buzz surrounding 26-year old Bailey Rae is earning the singer-songwriter comparisons to Norah Jones and even the legendary Billie Holiday. She took some time out from her hectic schedule to speak with AOL and answer a few questions about her music. You are a new artist to many people, but the reality is you've been doing this a while haven't you? I feel like I'm a new artist to everybody really because I've been making music for a really long time but in the most underground level possible. I've been doing about a gig every month for the last ten years. I've never played like every night for two weeks like what I'm doing at the moment. It's a different experience totally. I was in a band since I was 15 and I did that until a couple of years ago and also during that time I sang in these soul and jazz clubs and bars at university and a little bit part-time when I finished my degree. I feel like I've done a lot of gigs and I've written a lot of music. I feel like I'm just coming into my own now. I was really lucky that someone picked up on what I was doing. It's just new, it's really new, it's kind of hard to believe it's all happening. It's only been about 5 or six months. You say you've been lucky. Were you always looking for a deal? I was always looking for a deal even when I was 16 I was in a band, we just wanted to get signed. If we could have got signed and not gone to university we would have done it. I think it was the culture at the time, that grunge thing, that indie thing. You know you don't have to be a really talented virtuoso guitarist. It's just about simple songs, rawness and emotion. It was all about being able to hold the attention of a crowd. Everybody wanted to be in the band and everybody wanted to make it in the industry tour and have albums out In your music there's a particularly strong visual element. Can you expand on why that is? I feel that like 'I'd Like To' [from my album] is a song I can always sing with a smile on my face because I can remember all those summers. I remember what the blanket looked like, I remember what our old barbeque used to look like and what our old garage used to look like. It puts me back in that place. I do like to make my songs visual and evocative. I try to use all the senses in all the songs 'cos I just think it helps to stay in your mind more. I just like describing things. You have an indie rock background and you've also played in many jazz clubs. How have you managed to avoid being put in a specific genre box? I think nowadays there's less of a thing about genre 'cos of the iPod thing and also because of hip-hop sampling. You can get a sound from the dawn of time up until yesterday in all different styles of music. You're not defined by what you like. I personally love seeing all connections between different types of music. I like hearing the funk in Carole King and the rock in what Jimi Hendrix does or Led Zeppelin. When you think of the drummer you think it could be Sly and the Family Stone. Everything's crossed over. All musical styles and all musical cultures have always communicated and have always talked to each other. Nothing develops in a vacuum. That's what I love about music. I'd feel like my arm was being twisted to have to choose between one or the other. Some people appreciate that and other people don't really get it and think sometimes it waters

Re: NPNY: For the Prince historians...
I dunno if he has as many "haters" as many would like to believe. I think Prince is a brilliant artist but a horrible businessman. This is not an uncommon thing. He claims to hate corporate entities and yet was at one point a VP of A&R at Warner Brothers. Anyway, he says record companies are evil but he does these deals with Motown and Columbia. And then he sells Controversy Music to Universal for an unreal amount of money. As was previously brought up, he went and sued (and had shut down) some of the best sites dedicated to his catalog that there were, then started his own site, which is now closed. So now, if I just got into Prince as a result of 3121, I have to go to prince.org and listen to people refer to records that aren't available. And so where do I go? To Warner Brothers' Ultimate Prince collection. Whereas had he LEFT a couple of the other sites ALONE, he could still be selling his downloads. Prince is a horrible businessman. Let's all say it together, and let the healing begin. He is a genius artist, and his songs sell well. But he's sold them all at this point. There aren't as many of us loyal fans as there were before he changed his name, and that's to be expected. We, the loyal and faithful 150,000, are the only ones who care at this point. When Prince announced that Musicology was the last time he was going to perform "the hits" live" (another silly business move), he officially ended his relationship with fair weather fans. THEN he went to Los Angeles, and that's how we ended up here. He does this all the time. Very soon he will announce a movie or something and the fair weather fans will be back. And we, the loyal 150,000, will be ignored/sued/called fanatics again. I had the pleasure of talking to him as a Supervisor at the Sheraton in the 80s & while working for one his production companies during that period. I'm sure he's reflecting some on the financial as well as emotional ups and downs, but I believe he'll land on his feet over time as the wounds heal and he re-news & re-invents that fabulous personality of his, again. A song called "Sorry I was tripping for most of 2006" would do. I had a 3rd Gen iPod and had the infamous battery problem. Would not hold a charge for more than an hour. But I returned it, got a new one, and have been great ever since. The fact is...no matter who makes the mass storage device, it's a hard drive. And most of the problems most of us have with our computers...are hard drive problems. ESPECIALLY when you're putting mp3s from various sources onto said hard drive. Now that you can put video onto the player...the problems are going to mirror the problems of your desktop. NOW it's official. Good luck finding hotels. http://www.superbowl.com/news/story/9863556 Prince to perform at Super Bowl halftime NFL.com wire reports NEW YORK (Dec. 10, 2006) -- McCartney, Jagger and now Prince. For the third year in a row, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act will headline the Super Bowl halftime entertainment. This time it's Prince. The Purple One, winner of six Grammy Awards and nominated for five more this year, will play at the game in Miami on Feb. 4. The Super Bowl, which will be televised by CBS, is annually television's highest rated show. An estimated 141 million people watched last year's game between Pittsburgh and Seattle. The Rolling Stones headlined the halftime show for that Super Bowl, and two years ago it was Paul McCartney. The NFL has tended to take a more cautious approach since Janet Jackson's widely criticized "wardrobe malfunction" at halftime of the 2004 game. That game also was televised by CBS. Last year, Mick Jagger's microphone was silenced as he sang sexually suggestive lyrics in a couple of songs the Stones performed. Prince gained attention early his career with raunchy lyrics and racy performances, but has toned down his act somewhat in recent years. So long as he doesn't try and dust off and play "uh huh" with a big Pepsi logo behind him, I'll be happy. They can have that $1,000 (plus flight and other transportation) New Year's Eve in Vegas. It's a great idea for folks in Los Angeles, though. I'm already committed to Super Bowl 41, so I'll catch ol' boy there. So...the iPhone goes to Cingular, and this guy does a deal with Verizon. Brilliant. Way to reach the tech-savvy audience. I guess we can just go to buy it on mysp--well, his myspace page says it will not be updated any longer, and to go to 3121.com. SO, I guess we're saying that npgmusicclub is now back in effect. And if you want a hard copy CD, you'll have to wait for the tour. Or catch him at Macy's. Or the Roosevelt Hotel. Or Atlantic City. Or the World Series. Or at NASCAR. Re: NPNY: Planet Earth...Listen to it.
Agreed. My review of Planet Earth is: "what IS this?" These are definitely the rehearsal sessions from Rainbow Children and Musicology. I'm happy to hear him playing interesting guitar a little more, but I wish he'd play more guitar on less hokey songs. Couldn't he have sold Sony that C-Note album or something? Rainbow Children? Then maybe people would actually HEAR that album? This Sony/Motown stuff is hard to listen to. I am clearly an indie label Prince fan, I guess, because this is two of these crappy albums in a ROW. I hope he has some bootleg something planned. That being said, I think it would take "Sign O The Times Part 2" to please some of us fans. We're really hard on him. I know I am. I AM looking forward to the remixes of Chelsea Rodgers, now that you mention it. Man if DJ Spinna gets a hold of that it's going to be CRAZY. Re: NPNY: New York Guide to Prince...
As I think about this, I don't think there's anything to do anywhere except LA these days. Here in Charlotte Prince hasn't existed since 1991, and the radio is all the proof you need. You can go on a "Prince was here" tour in Los Angeles, and everything will still be there. Every place I remember seeing Prince from back home is gone now, except for Nell's and Madison Square Garden. Is Avery Fisher Hall still there? The real question, I guess, is what is there to do in NYC period. Last time I was back, I ended up going to a slavery exhibit at a museum, and Central Park. All stuff that I never did when I lived there because there was always something going on. It's always nice to take a walk around, but I had to wait until late at night because I've been away from the city so long the crowds freaked me out. A word of warning for the NPNY'ers about to head to Atlanta...when you come back to visit the first time it will feel like you're visiting Tokyo. Derek, you're our only hope. The city needs you. The NPNYers scattered across the map -- we need you. Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?
I can't imagine the liner notes of this record being anything I can't live without. When iTunes gets it, I'll get it. No matter how many people buy it this week, he's got a million units floating around England anyway, so it doesn't really matter this time, does it? He's gonna tell us it's platinum, and justify charging us 321 dollars for a general admission ticket to a show where he'll do all the songs he said he wasn't going to do anymore. I think the Kered disorder is catching. I just don't care this time. I WAS really excited, then I heard the songs. I'm gonna sit this one out until the Chelsea Rodgers show starts. Prince has become the David Beckham of R&B. Over-exposed and under delivering. We shall SEE if he's still got it like he did back in the day. What they BOTH need is some competition. I DO have to admit, I liked "Everlasting Now". Lyrics were rubbish, but the music really knocked me out. And everyone knows, "Rainbow Children" was not a popular album. So I feel for you who say "Planet Earth ain't that bad". But I stand by my review. There's nobody challenging Prince musically, nobody telling him "that's horrible, P, come again", so he's phoning these albums in. Although...maybe that's why he has a new band. Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?
For those of us who were alive when Prince started, we're all around the age where this division of opinion is a good thing. It's just like how there are still people who go to every Rolling Stones and KISS show, knowing that the best days of those bands have long since passed. They're going to relive the good old days. The difference with Prince, I think, is that we all KNOW that he can do better, and there's the question of all this genius unreleased stuff he has just sitting around. Do any of you who say you like this album believe he can't do any better? This is a dude who sold hundreds of thousands of copies of "Lovesexy", a one track album. I think "Lovesexy" has more musical depth than Planet Earth, and if the only reason why is because "he's older now", then perhaps he's done. I personally hope not, because there isn't exactly any one else out here challenging the musical (and corporate) status quo like him. On the average, it looks like everyone has 3 or 4 songs that they like from this album. Compared to entire ALBUMS we've liked from him in the past. I think that says something about an artist of Prince's caliber. And what I think it says is that he's trying to make hits, which is a bad move. Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?
See, I thought he was on to something with Black Sweat. When I heard it, I thought "ahh Prince is back on track!" then the rest of the album left me completely confused. I think if "Planet Earth" was D'Angelo's comeback album, for example, people would line up in the streets and throw stones at him. If any other artist tried "Future Baby Mama" we'd be talking about how R&B is dead. But because it's Prince, we're letting it go. I like when Prince plays hard. Extended versions. Solos. Funk. But I also like when he has something to say. Even when he was preaching to us, he had more moments than 3 out of 10. Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?
You know, this is a brilliant point. A Muse. A LOT of artists we love need new muses. It's like when Stevie Wonder had Syreeta around, his work was incredible! Nowadays, we get "What The Fuss". I wonder, though, is Prince's best muse himself or us? His live shows are hands down great, and that's been pretty consistent for 30 years. It's the RECORDED work that seems to vary in quality. Maybe he needs to record all of his future albums live? I have to say that I wish Prince would have just wrote songs about what was bothering him and spared us all the Graffiti Bridge era. "Elephants And Flowers" is really just a step below "Future Baby Mama". Seriously, I don't think anyone wants Prince to get all Mary J. Blige on us and tell us all his business. We just want some advancement in the recorded music. The concert prices are going up, but the experience we're getting for the price remains consistent. Re: NPNY: interesting
SonyBMG Music Entertainment uses an ad agency, Universal-McCann in New York, to place interactive (online) ads for their releases. They placed ads for Planet Earth beginning last week. "top search" is a huge advertising business. Top search results are often bought. One of the only cases where this is NOT true is when you do a search for "NPNY". Re: NPNY: Planet Earth
The US promotion for this album was quite a lot, actually. Besides that little Super Bowl performance this year, There was the Verizon download, which was supported with TV, print, and radio spots, then Sony took out consumer and trade ads for the release. "Guitar" was also "Song of the Day" at Salon.com, and let's not forget, the news about the UK giveaway was that they gave away 1 million full length CDs. Any artist would kill for this kind of promotion. There hasn't been this kind of set up for an album release in the US since the 80s. 92,000 CDs sold after all of THIS? I agree with Derek (again), I think Prince's fan base, us, have spoken. I also want to mention that this album is not available on iTunes. This is mainly because of Sony's refusal to play ball with Apple, I'm sure, but on Prince's part, it's frustrating to fans, and silly. Give away 1 million CDs but don't have the album available to BUY as a download? Less than a month after the iPhone comes out? There's no elaborate booklet or packaging on the CD, it's not really a collector's item. For 12 years he's been going on about the future of music "being able to download files in2 your fam's computers"--I wonder what happened? source: [ http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070914-prince-to-reclaim-the-internet -by-suing-youtube-ebay-pirate-bay.html ] Prince to "reclaim the Internet" by suing YouTube, eBay, Pirate Bay By Nate Anderson | Published: September 14, 2007 - 11:10AM CT Prince is planning to make some doves cry over at YouTube headquarters. The symbol-loving singer has announced that he wants to go after the video-sharing site, along with eBay and the Pirate Bay, for hosting unauthorized versions of his music and merchandise. Prince, described in a recent press release as a "creative genius and forward thinker by nature," is certainly an interesting fellow. He has just launched a new CD (Planet Earth), a new perfume line ("3121"), and is doing a 21-night stand in London at which a half million people are expected to pay actual British pounds to see Prince in the flesh (yes, we're amazed too). This is the man who once changed his name to a symbol and currently runs an official web site (3121.com, of course) that looks to be written in a Princified version of "lolcat," telling members to "use their 4mer login and password 2 update ur in4mation." Prince's attacks on the sites come just a couple of months after he released his latest album for free across the UK in an issue of the Mail on Sunday. It's understandable that he might not be happy about counterfeit merchandise bearing his brand being sold on eBay for profit, and the Pirate Bay makes it simple to get entire copies of his albums, but it's much less clear why His Purpleness has his velvet trousers in a bunch about YouTube; no one would use grainy music videos as a substitute for Prince albums or live shows. It's even odder when one considers how well Prince has done from the free CD giveaway, which certainly boosted his UK profile before his current 21-night gig in London. After giving the disc away to the entire country, he's now concerned about short video clips on YouTube? Prince might not have much of a case, anyway. Unless courts find that the DMCA does not apply to YouTube, it continues to have a "safe harbor" that shelters it from these sorts of legal cannonballs so long as it complies with proper takedown requests. eBay, which has faced problems with counterfeit goods for years, is also used to dealing with such situations, and The Pirate Bay has so far proved impervious to attack. - NewPowerNewYork Mailing List website: Www.NPNY.Org - Unsubscribe? Re: NPNY: RE: [LoveSexyDC] Van Hunt responds to the criticism he's received from Prince.org
I've listened to both Van Hunt CDs. I really didn't like them. The production was entirely too derivative and the lyrics, after a while, got to be just silly. To me. But it doesn't seem like he's making music for me. I'm sure this will change after I hit send, but I've never met a male who said he liked Van Hunt. The dude has a target audience: women. Considering the fact that women buy more music than men, that's not a bad marketing strategy. What confuses me is how the dude has all this time to sit around and ponder what the internet says about him. Don't people come out to his shows? What difference does it make what people on prince.org say about you if people are coming out and paying to see you perform? Van Hunt seems to be a little too emo to be funky. Which works for his target audience, maybe, but probably do much to GROW his audience. Re: NPNY: RE: [LoveSexyDC] Van Hunt responds to the criticism he's received from Prince.org
Right. I didn't say there were none, I'm just saying that I haven't met any. I have also never been to a Van Hunt show. And to be honest, I have been to many a show because my wife (or former girlfriend back in the day) was really into some artist and wanted to see him perform. Maxwell and Babyface come immediately to mind. No WAY would I care enough to go see those guys by myself or with a crew of friends. But every time I go to an Omar show, for example, I see a lot of my male friends there. My wife and I both enjoy Omar's music, and we know many people who don't like him. We're all grownups. If you don't like a singer, so what. It's about enjoying the night out. But when it comes to buying a CD, or downloading some tunes, Van Hunt doesn't do it for me, and apparently, there are a few people on the internet who agree with me. Someone, though, thought Van was good enough to sign to Capitol and send an advance check to. This isn't some struggling indie artist that 'needs our support' or anything like that. This is a dude with two albums. Someone thinks Van is good enough to go pay and see. That's all that matters. I think Van's taking himself too seriously, and, again, is too emo to be funky. Re: NPNY: RE: [LoveSexyDC] Prince Sued by Revelations over 3121
3121 smelled horrible, but it doesn't matter. if Prince showed up people would have bought it. Plus it was a pretty bottle. Sorta. Look at how many people bought a picture book of his recent tour. Not of Lovesexy '88, Not First Avenue photos...but of 21 NIGHTS! I'm actually surprised Sony hasn't tried to sue him yet over that giving the CD away in England stunt. I say we call for a Prince fan BAILOUT! I know fans who have spent more on Prince than on General Motors cars! While dude has his checkbook out, can the fans get reparations for the last two albums? Re: NPNY: Two New Pics on LotusFlower site
I found out that these shows at Prince's house in LA cost 2 million dollars to put on. Sponsors come up with the money. So if he's charging 2 mil for a show at his house, and all he does otherwise is wrote and play music...this website is unacceptable. He can afford to pay someone to do more. For someone who was once on the edge of where the web is going (with NPGMC) he's now down to having a poorly updated fancy blog. He's become one of those "old school" acts like the Stones. Of course it's a good show, they're great songs. On Feb 13, 2009, at 5:03 PM, loven happiness wrote: > I agree Robin. Prince does not care a fig about his fans. Between the bootlegs being played on the air and the live footage on VH-1, and TV-One playing "Graffiti Bridge", and CNN doing stories with "Eye CU" on the screen, and the org becoming the second highest trafficked site on the internet, we'd have to send Derek to the moon! NO rest! No rest! Interviews all day!! On Jul 15, 2009, at 3:57 PM, chanel0...@aol.com wrote: > Just a thought today. Did anyone hear if Prince made any comment > on the > death of Michael Jackson?
