L2TP Issue
Hi everyone I wonder if someone could help me solve this issue. A friend of mine is having issues when trying to connect to his office network using a vpn connection with L2TP. He is using Windows 7 Ultimate and the office server is running MS SBS 2010. He can't just get this vpn connection to work. All the required ports are opened on the Juniper firewall i.e. udp ports 4500, 500 and 1701. Any idea what could be wrong and where to check further? Sorry Kurt. I was meant to reply to your message. Does he have to open then tcp 6 and udp 17 re ESP? Thanks Pierre I believe you'll need to make sure that IP Protocol 50 is enabled as well, for ESP. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layer_2_Tunneling_Protocol On Sat, Mar 3, 2012 at 04:33, Pierre Camilleri pierre.camill...@fosterclark.com wrote: Hi everyone I wonder if someone could help me solve this issue. Annoying DNS issue
Hi All Our current AD domain is running under Windows Server 2008 R2 and our workstation clients are Windows XP Pro. At times (2/3 times a day) I am having to clear the DNS cache of our domain server because certain users would be unable to access certain websites such as for example HSBCNET.com. They can access other websites without any problems whatsover but somehow certain websites require the DNS cache to be cleared. Weird. Any idea what could be causing this to happen? Using Skype in a corporate environment
Hi all Our director is very interested in introducing Skype in certain departments since most of our clients/suppliers use Skype already. However I am somewhat concerned about the following issues: 1. Lack of administration facilities such as locking down/disabling certain Skype functions. I know that Windows 2008 group policy administrative templates exist but read somewhere that these might not be compatible with future newer versions of Skype. In fact Skype no longer supplies such templates. 2. Network bandwidth hogging. How serious an issue is this? Each workstation is connected via a 100 MB link to our core switch. Our Internet broadband link speed is 4 Mbps for download and upload connections. 3. Security issues. How serious are these? Has anyone deployed and using Skype within a corporate environment? Any issues encountered? Things to watch out for? Enquiry re VPN Client Software
Hi all We currently have an IBM ISS MX3006 UTM appliance and we are trying to source a VPN client software which is compatible with this appliance. We once had purchased SafeNet SoftRemoteLT for Windows XP Pro but this does not seem to support domain logins from the client and I've been told that as a product it no longer exists. What we require is for the user to be able to log onto our Windows domain from a remote office via a VPN client. Does anyone use the IBM ISS MX3006? And what VPN client software are you using? Re: Clean Pristine or Swing Migrations?
I re-ran DCpromo and then DNS worked well. Prefer the Swing migration. I have a further query if you don't mind. I now have two domain controllers, one is the current source domain controller and the other one is the target domain controller. I now wish to promote the target domain controller to be the main domain controller. The source domain controller will be decomissioned. How best should I go about it? Are the following steps correct and in the right order? 1. Rename the target domain controller using the same server name and same ip address. 2. Demote the old domain server by running DCpromo on it. This will then become a member server. Rename it as otherwise there would be two servers with the same computer name. Re: Clean Pristine or Swing Migrations?
Thanks for your advice. Then if I go ahead by demoting the old domain controller, switch it off and have only the new domain controller up and running then users should be able to log in as per usual without any issues. The swing migration has migrated across everything including OUs, Machine and User accounts, Group Policies as well as the system login script. Clean Pristine or Swing Migrations?
Hello all I am currently working on the migration project of our Windows Server 2003 domain to a Windows R2 2008 domain. Our single domain is small with about 160 user acounts. I've tried doing a swing migration but somehow could not get the DNS server to work on the R2 server. I am currently looking at the CP migration option. With the CP migration I know that users would have to re-create their passwords again, but this isn't an issue for me. What concerns me is whether user and machine accounts will get migrated across correctly. Also would I have to re-join the users' workstations to the new domain? Would Group Policies and Security Permissions be migrated across? I was thinking of keeping the same domain name and server name (including IP address), obviously the original domain server would be switched off. Any comments/advice would be greately appreciated. Straight-through or Cross-Over cable?
Hi all We currently have a Siemens router installed and wish to connect it to our internal LAN. We have a network outlet point nearby. My question is this. Should we use a straight-through cable? I have a hunch that the engineer in charge of the router installation connected it to the network outlet point using a cross-over cable. And at the network switch the connection has been patched with a straight-through cable. Hence our inability to ping it. Any comments welcome. Windows Task Manager not seeing full 8GB RAM
Hi all! I have a Windows Server 2008 SP2 standard (32-bit) with 8 GB of RAM installed. I enabled the setting /set pae ForceEnable and it seems the setting was successful. When I view basic information about the server it does report 8GB RAM installed. So why is Task Manager only recognising 4 GB RAM? Is this normal? Realtek NIC issues
Hi all I thought of posting this here just in case someone has encountered this issue before. We have a number of Fujitsu R570 workstations with onboard RealTek NICs. These are RTL 8168DP/8111DP Family PCI-E GBE type. We've been having intermittent issues with some of them. Sometimes they initialise, sometimes they don't. Meaning that when powering up the workstation and logging into Windows XP we get no network connectivity. When powering down the workstations and powering them up again after some time then the issue gets resolved. We also tried forcing the network speed on our HP switch and the NIC card i.e. we set them to 100 FDx. We're finding these issues very strange. By any chance does high humidty affect NICs? We've noted that Fujitsu in the past used to use Broadcom for their on-board NICs. Now it seems they're using Realtek. I think that Realtek are inferior in quality. Would appreciate any comments on this. Thanks Pierre ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~
The remote connection has timed out.
Hello all! I am encountering a problem when trying to connect to a remote server using the Windows XP Pro (SP2) Remote Desktop. The domain user keeps getting the following error: The remote connection has timed out. Please try connecting to the remote computer again. Now when I log on using an account with admin rights this does not happen which means that there seems to be a Group Policy setting being applied thus preventing normal users from connecting remotely. We have a Domain Group Policy in place but when checking the settings I cannot seem to find what particular GP setting/s is causing this. Could someone please help me troubleshoot this problem? Many thanks Pierre ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~
RE: The remote connection has timed out.
Hi Richard I've checked the GPO settings and there is nothing configured for Terminal Services so no settings should be applied. The remote server belongs to a third party. It's a demo server which we need to connect to via Remote Desktop in order to view a demo of a software application. Thanks P. ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~
Re: The remote connection has timed out.
But my account allows me to connect because I have admin rights. It is when normal users try to connect that they are getting the error message hence my suspicions falling on some GPO settings. ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~
Re: The remote connection has timed out.
This server does not belong to us. We were given temporary access to it in order to view a demo on it via Remote Desktop. The problem cropped up when one of our users tried to access it via Remote Desktop. However when I tried accessing it using my normal account because I am a system admin, I could access it without any issues. This is very strange because I cannot find anything in the GPO that seems to be causing this. ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~

Regarding Trojan Infections!
Hi everyone! Thought of posting this here in the hope of getting some feedback regarding a problem we encountered with Trojan infections. Lately we had a number of workstations, about three, infected with a number of Trojans. Examples of these were Troj/Agent-GPK, Mal/Behav-112 and Spy-Agent.bv. Even though we were on the latest DAT and Scan Engine, McAfee VSE 8.5i (Patch 3) was unable to remove them completely. It used to say that they were deleted but they kept cropping up again. I even tried using another Anti-Virus product, but still no success. It seems that the only solution is to format the hard disk and install Windows XP Pro from scratch. Hardly an ideal solution! All this has led us to conclude that the McAfee AV does not offer adequate protection against Trojans and furthermore when these are detected they are not 100% removed from the workstation. What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone been through such experiences? Would appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks Pierre ~ Upgrade to Next Generation Antispam/Antivirus with Ninja!~ ~ http://www.sunbelt-software.com/SunbeltMessagingNinja.cfm ~
