[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP (Suffolk County)- Alder Flycatcher
There was an actively feeding and calling Alder Flycatcher at Sunken Meadow State Park this morning. The bird was flitting in the canopy of oaks and hickory bordering the marsh a few hundred feet in on the inner marsh trail in the western section of the park. Other than that, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Willow Flycatcher, Lincoln's Sparrow, and a few warblers were around. [nysbirds-l] Edgewood Preserve- Red Crossbills, Sunken Meadow SP- RHWO continues (Suffolk County)
I had a pair of Red Crossbills earlier this morning on my hike through Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve in Deer Park, Suffolk County. Initially, their clicking and "kip" notes alerted me to their presence, which after some time I was able to track them down to the exact pitch pine they were feeding in. They didn't vocalize too much and were mostly quiet while they were feeding. Also of interest was a Common Raven feeding on scraps at the southwest corner of the preserve. The immature Red-headed Woodpecker, whose head is almost completely red now, continues along the Inner Marsh trail in the western section of Sunken Meadow State Park. Ospreys have returned to the nesting platforms scattered around the marshes of the park as well. Photos of the crossbill can be viewed at my flickr below. http://www.flickr.com/pellegrinov Best, Vinny PellegrinoEast Northport, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Ravens 8/5/16
There were 2 Common Ravens that flew from the south side of the marsh to the north side of Field 2 today at Sunken Meadow SP. After landing, one bird was begging for food and both birds vocalized quite a bit. After a brief encounter with some Fish crows, a third bird came to join them. The only other birds of note were 2 Little Blue Herons and a continuing Louisiana Waterthrush. This time around I managed to get a few photos of the waterthrush which I will post to Ebird later today. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Louisiana Waterthrush, nesting Hummingbirds, GH Owl (Suffolk County)
My walk this morning starting around 9 AM at Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk County produced a Louisiana Waterthrush, which happens to be my first for the park. An early fall migrant, this bird was observed on the opposite bank of a stream in the western section of the park. I managed to study the bird for almost fifteen minutes while it foraged along the bank and bathed in the stream edge pools before it spooked and flew further down stream. Also a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird has been on her nest for the past few days and has only left for short breaks. A Great Horned Owl has been frequenting the same area for a while now and the Blue Jays are not having it! Every time I pass the same tree the owl is perched (visible from the trail), the Blue Jays are relentlessly mobbing the poor guy/girl. The only other avian highlight was 5 Eastern Phoebes, 3 of which were fresh juveniles. I'm assuming they were local nesters or possibly early moving after breeding. On another note, I found fresh River Otter scat at several of the latrine sites within the park. Although I had a few fleeting encounters of the two or three otters that reside in the Nissequogue River watershed over the years, I have been unsuccessful at capturing a picture or video of them, just their remnants of food and scat! :) The checklist from my walk from today is below. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S30791934 Vinny Pellegrinopicasaweb.com/vinnypelleEast Northport, NY -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

A beautiful male Kentucky warbler is singing and foraging rather close just off the Inner Marsh trail at Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk county. He's offering marvelous views as I write this. The Lark Sparrow continues at the entrance to the Calverton Grasslands. The bird was closer to the Community Center than to the actual road heading to the grasslands. [nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow pictures + info (Suffolk County)
Couldn't post anything yesterday since I didn't get home until twelve in the morning, but two pictures of the Lark Sparrow that was frequenting the edges of the lake at Calverton Grasslands are below. Once again, the bird was feeding along the chain-link fence just off of Grumman Blvd west of the entrance to the grasslands. The Lark Sparrow was associating with a flock of 4 Chipping, 2 Field, and 4 American Tree Sparrows. Song Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos were abundant at all the locations I went to. Also, 8 Savannah Sparrows, 23 Horned Larks, 15+ Eastern Meadowlarks, and a single Snow Bunting were on the runway. The Snow Bunting was actually perched on a fence and sang for a short period of time- quite interesting. I looked hard for any Rough-legged Hawks, but failed coming up with any. The only raptors that were observed included 4 Red-tailed Hawks(3 adults and 1 juv), 2 American Kestrels, and 1 Northern Harrier. Definitely a nice selection of sparrows for December. http://picasaweb.google.com/VinnyPelle/LongIsland2010# Vinny Pellegrino picasaweb.com/vinnypelle East Northport, NY "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. [nysbirds-l] Lark Sparrow- Calverton Grasslands, Suffolk County
Just a little while ago I had marvelous views of a Lark Sparrow feeding with a flock of 4 Chipping, 2 Field, 4 Tree, and several Song Sparrows and Juncos. The bird was foraging in the grass immediatly west of the entrance to the Calverton Grasslands by the way of Grumman Blvd. The entire flock was pretty skittish, often darting into the shrubs bordering the pond there. The Lark Sparrow was really favoring the grass in front of the chain-link fence on Grumman Blvd. Pics will be posted when I get home. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- White-winged Crossbill, NO Hermit warbler
The Hermit Warbler was not seen this morning during my mid-morning walk around the park. However, a splendid suprise was found when I was scoping the eastern lagoon of Sunken Meadow Creek- a calling flyover White-winged Crossbill! The bird flew from a stand of conifers on the north side of the baseball fields just west of Parking Field 3 and continued south, so I did not get great views, but still a great bird. Besides the decent number of sea ducks on the LI Sound and waterfowl in the creek, there were 11 Northern Gannets very close to shore, 2 female Common Eiders just off the jetty, and 14 Common Mergansers in the marsh. Re: [nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted Goose- field on Pulaski Rd
Sorry for the false alarm, but the reported Greater White-fronted Goose from yesterday isn't actually what I said it was...oops! I was rushing to attend an appointment at the Huntington Medical Group(just down the road) and noticed a goose with a bright orange bill and legs. I pulled over and quickly snapped crappy shots from my camera phone through my scope, however, I didn't get a chance to thoroughly study the bird(like I normally would have liked to). In fact, the bird is a Graylag x Canada Goose hybrid- not special at all. The bird's identity was ascertained by photos sent to me. My apologies for this premature sightingand for the several of you that went to observe the bird. [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End- Northern Shrike, Marbled Godwit, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskins
I started out this morning at the Coast Guard Station where the sand spit was devoid of birds. I tried scoping out the flats across the channel, but the foggy conditions didn't help. So I resorted to walking the median where there were several flocks of Pine Siskins, Goldfinches, and a suprise male Red Crossbill. Raptors observed included Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, and a Peregrine Falcon. After checking the median I headed back over to the Coast Guard Station where the fog was no longer present and the sun even popped out for a bit. A Harbor Seal greeted me as I approached the edge of the dock- pretty neat. On the water were a pair of Common Eider, 1 White-winged Scoter, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Great Cormorants, lots of DC Cormorants, and several Common Loons. On the exposed flats were many American Oystercatchers and among them was the Marbled Godwit. An American Bittern that popped out of the marsh for a short time was a nice suprise. Before leaving, a Common Snipe flew over calling. At the Nature Center, the Northern Shrike continues. Also present were several Horned Larks, a flock of Snow Bunting, and 2 Eastern Meadowlarks. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Pine Siskins, Sea Ducks
Norm Klein and I birded all around Sunken Meadow State Park late this morning thru the early afternoon today. Overall, it wasn't very birdy. The highlight was a flock of ten Pine Siskins that flew over and landed in the conifers just east of Field 3. Soon after, another small flock of Pine Siskins flew over and started to feed in the pines. It was nice to actually watch them feed rather than see them flyby. The only other birds of note were a Greater Yellowlegs, Great Egret, 12 Hooded Mergansers, 7 Ruddy Ducks, and a female Bufflehead all on the upper reaches of Sunken Meadow Creek. Back on Friday(Nov 12) I watched a nice movement of all three species of Scoter on the LI Sound, as well as decent numbers of Common and Red-throated Loons, Red-breasted Mergansers, and a single Common Eider. As far as landbirds go, 2 American Pipits, 7+ Eastern Bluebirds(amid the flocks of Robins and waxwings), several flocks of Cedar Waxwings, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, and Purple Finch were all observed early Friday morning. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- American Bittern, Hooded Mergs
A pleasant hike this morning around Sunken Meadow SP produced my FoS Hooded Mergansers- a pair diving on the upper section of Sunken Meadow Creek. Nonetheless, the best bird of the day was undoutedly an American Bittern that I flushed along the Inner Marsh trail. Initially, the bird flew from a section of phragmites bordering the trail into the heart of the marsh where I lost sight of him. Other birds of note included 25+ Purple Finch, 1 Chipping, 1 Field, 5 Savannah, and 3 White-crowned Sparrows in addition to the numerous Song, Swamp, and White-throated Sparrows. Dark-eyed Juncos and a few Eastern Towhees were also present in different sections of the park bringing my sparrow total to 9 species. Also, a Red-throated Loon was feeding off the beach on the LI Sound viewed from Field 2. Cooper's and Red-tailed Hawks were very vocal today, being heard a good portion of the time while in the western half of the park. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP/ David Weld Sanctuary, Suffolk County- Vesper Sparrow
A quick walk through Sunken Meadow State Park yesterday morning produced my FoS male Purple Finch along with a few females, all of which were munching on hawthorn berries. Sharp-shinned andRed-tailed Hawks and a Merlin were the only raptors seen. A House Wren was also seeking shelter against the wind in a small brush pile in Field 2. Today, I visited David Weld Sanctuary in the village of Nissequogue and found a nice variey of birds including a Winter Wren, 1 Rusty Blackbird(calling in swamp), 3-4 flyover Purple Finch, Brown Creepers, Blue-headed Vireos, Northern Parula, Blackpoll warblers, and five species of sparrow. The highlight of my hike was a Vesper Sparrow in the company of 2 immature White-crowned, 3 Swamp, 5 White-throated, and 3 Song Sparrows. A Sharp-shinned Hawk was also hunting in the vicinity. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- C. Loon, 8 species of Sparrow
I roamed Sunken Meadow State Park from 8:30am-12:00pm today. Overall, it was a good day with lots of activity throughout the park. The most productive spot seemed to be the area surrounding Field 2 where loads of Song, Swamp, and White-throated sparrows as well as Yellow-rumped Warblers were feeding. I tallied a total of 8 species of sparrow(not including Dark-eyed Junco or RS Towhee) just in that vicinity alone. A Common Loon still in its breeding plumage was on the LI Sound viewed from the bluff on the golf course trail. Brant flew just offshore with two flocks composed of 35 then 26 birds. Also, a single Baltimore Oriole was feeding with some Purple Finch along the park road. My trip list is below. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP, Suffolk County
There were lots of birds on the move this morning, most flying directly overhead. I hiked the western half of Sunken Meadow State Park (Suffolk County) and found some noteworthy species with a surpise transient Eastern Meadowlark flying over Field 2 being the best bird of the day. Other highlights included a cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo, a single Yellow-bellied Flycatcher(late migrant), female/immature Blackburnian warbler, Lincoln's and an immature White-crowned Sparrow amongst the numerous Song, Swamp, and White-throated Sparrows residing in the dirt lot near Field 2, and several first-of-the-season birds. [nysbirds-l] Robert Moses SP- Parasitic Jaeger, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Yellow-billed Cuckoos
An early morning sea watch from Field 2 at Robert Moses State Park today produced a Parasitic Jaeger, over 75 Northern Gannets(some coming very close to shore), 100+ Common Terns, 4 Forster's Terns, 2 Royal Terns(calling while they flew over), and a small movement of Common Eider. An adult Lesser Black-backed Gull was amid the gulls at Field 2. Also near Field 2 were 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoos flying west along the northern edge of the parking lot and a beautifulRed Fox prowling the median. The reported Cattle Egret was not present in Field 5 during my two checks while in the park. Nevertheless, a small flock of Black-bellied andSemipalmated Plovers were foraging in the grassy circles at the entrance to Field 5. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Blue Grosbeak, Clay-colored Sparrow, Blue-winged Teal
I started the morning walking in the drizzle at Sunken Meadow State Park(Suffolk County). My first stop was the dirt lot at the NW corner of Field 2 to look for the reported Clay-colored Sparrow. When I arrived it was very quiet and no birds were to be found. I waited a few minutes and proceeded to walk around the entire lot. When I got back to where I originally started I flushed two sparrows up into the high grass. Upon inspection, I was looking at both the Clay-colored Sparrow and a Swamp sparrow. They quickly dropped back down to the ground and continued to feed. While watching the Clay-colored I heard a rather loud distinct "chink." I turned around and saw a large blue bird perched on top of one of the shrubs across the way. I lifted my bins and found myself staring at a male Blue Grosbeak. He didn't stay very long, as I tried moving a little closer he flew overhead and deep into the field(if you want to call it that). The only other birds were 2 Song Sparrows. When I left the lot, the Clay-colored was still feeding. Next, I hiked the Inner Marsh trail. There was very little activity. The only birds of note were 4 Purple Finch, 1 Wood Thrush, 7 species of warbler, 22+Wood Ducks, and a Blue-winged Teal hen dabbling on the last pond along the trail. By the time I was done and heading back to my car, the drizzling stopped completely. Eastern Phoebes and a Sharp-shinned Hawk were the last birds I seen while exiting the park. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- new arrivals (9-23-10)
There were a few new arrivals at Sunken Meadow State Park this morning. My hike, from 8:10am-10:30am, started at the dirt lot located at the northwest corner of the abandoned Field 2. There was a small flock of 7 White-throated Sparrows with an adult White-crowned Sparrow in the mix. Other sparrows observed were several Song and a few Chipping. On Tuesday there was a Lincoln's sparrow reported from this location by Ken Fuestel. A Cooper's Hawk was patrolling the area. One Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was flying from tree to tree as was a Red-breasted Nuthatch. Purple Finches were on the move this morning. I had one flock of 16 flyover heading west, another flock of at least 30 birds a little while later, and finally about 20 birds gorging themselves on chokecherries along the park road. Also along the park road were 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 1 Empidonax flycatcher sp, several Eastern Phoebes, and Eastern Wood-Pewees. The Inner Marsh trail had my first-of-the-seasonBrown Creepers(2 birds), 1 Nashville warbler among 7 warbler species, a Marsh Wren(actually seen very well perched on phragmites), 1Swamp Sparrow, 1 Spotted Sandpiper flyby, 2Green-winged Teal, 19+Wood Ducks, 1 White-eyed Vireo, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk that was actively chasing 5 or so Blue Jays back and forth across the stream. Next I headed to Field 3 where there were 3 Chimney Swift flyovers, 1 Osprey, American Black Ducks, and a single Ruby-crowned Kinglet. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Bay-breasted Warbler, Purple Finch, YB Cuckoo
For two hours(8:15am-10:15am) I birded Sunken Meadow State Park this morning. The western end of the park was pretty dead with the exception of 3 Purple Finch eating what looked like chokecherries, a few Ovenbirds, and 2 Chipping Sparrows. The Inner Marsh trail and the bluffs trail on the north side of the park road was quiet so I headed east to Field 3. After parking and getting out of the car I spotted a Peregrine Falcon flying just above the treetops. The bird then make a quick swoop scattering the gulls in the parking lot and then proceeded to gain altitude and soar out of sight. The shrubbery bordering the lower creek hosted a small assortment of passerines. A single Bay-breasted Warbler was working his way around the Creek as was my first-of-the-season Ruby-crowned Kinglet. I also tallied 8 other species of warbler. On a bit of a late note, Friday morning's quick walk along the park road leading to the golf course yielded me a flyover Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Swainson's Thrush, a hunting Sharp-shinned Hawk, and an awesome spectacle of 2 clashing Cooper's Hawks over the abandoned Field 2 parking lot. [nysbirds-l] Rest of report from Sunken Meadow SP- Yellow-throated warbler
Towards the end of my birding today I was walking towards my car parked in Field 2(the main parking lot) and saw a pocket of bird activity near the picnic benches just north of Field 1. I decided to go and check it out and was rewarded with amazing views of a Yellow-throated Warbler amongst several Magnolias, 1 Prairie, 6 "Western" Palms, and 1 Wilson's warbler. The birds were moving east in the small strip of forest that borders the boardwalk just north of all the picknic tables; the Yellow-throated warbler was going in and out of the shrubbery and after twenty minutes of following I lost sight of him. I suspect he is still in that general area because the Prairie and Wilson's warbler that were foraging with him still remained in that vicinity. In addition to that, I had a total of 17 species of warbler by the end of my excursion which was from 8:00am-12:30pm. Yellow- 2 Chestnut-sided- 1 Magnolia- several Yellow-rumped- increased to 7 Black-throated Green- 2 Blackburnian- 1 male Prairie- 1 Palm- 6 "Western" Bay-breasted- 1 Blackpoll- 3 Yellow-throated- 1 Black-and-white- several American Redstart- several Ovenbird-5 Common Yellowthroat- 2 Wilson's- 1 Canada- 1 female Other birds of interest included a flyoverMerlin,Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 3 Veery, 2 Swainson's Thrush, 1 Wood Thrush, 1 Scarlet Tanager, 2 Least Flycatchers, and 2 Yellow-bellied Flycatchers. Certain parts of the park were dead with no activity whatsoever; however, there was a lot of action that took place along the park road near the golf course. Something that was interesting to me was what seemed like a flock comprised solely of flycatchers: 2 Least, 1 Yellow-bellied, 2 Great-crested, 1 Willow/Alder, 2 Pewees, and 4 Eastern Phoebes. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- fall migrants, East Northport C Nighthawks, etc
I spent the entire morning and early afternoon birding in different parts of Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk County today. I started at 8:00am on the Inner Marsh trail at the western end of the park finding lots of warblers and other fall migrants, then headed down the park road which terminates at the Golf Course. After sifting through the plethora of migrants at that end of the park, I drove to the eastern end of Field 1 and proceeded to walk along the edge of the canal all the way to the dunes. By the time I finished it was 2:00pm and I had 19 species of warbler the best being 1 Tennessee, 1 Cape May, and 2 Bay-breasteds. Another bird of note was a bright Philadelphia Vireo flitting high in the treetops at the edge of the Creek. I did cross paths with a foraging Red Fox in the early a.m. as well as some angry White-tailed Deer. A Doe stomped her forefeet at me a few times because I didn't realize her two fawns were frequenting the area. Below are the highlights of what I found today. Wood Ducks- 5 Osprey- 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk- 1 Red-tailed Hawk- 4 Peregrine Falcon- 1 flying West above the trees, viewed by Field 3 Least Flycatcher- 1 Empid. sp- 3, 1 with a lot of yellow on breast but very brief encounter Great-crested Flycatcher- 1 Eastern Kingbird- 7 heading west White-eyed Vireo- 4 Philadelphia Vireo- 1 in the top of tree bordering SM Creek Red-eyed Vireo- 8 Red-breasted Nuthatch- 1 Veery- 4 Tennessee warbler- 1 Nashville warbler- 2 Northern Parula- several Yellow warbler- 1 Chestnut-sided warbler- 1 Magnolia warbler- several Cape May warbler- 1 first fall male Black-throated Blue warbler- several Yellow-rumped warbler- 1 feasting on myrtle berries along canal Black-throated Green warbler- 2 Blackburnian warbler- 1 female Palm warbler- 6, 5 being the "Western" subspecies Bay-breasted warbler- 2, 1 bird still had decent amount of buff on flanks Blackpoll warbler- 5 Black-and-white warbler- several American Redstart- several Ovenbird- 2 Northern Waterthrush- 2 Canada warbler- 2 Scarlet Tanager- 1 nonbreeding male still singing Rose-breasted Grosbeak- 2 Baltimore Oriole- 1 A couple more sightings, which are late I might add, include: An Eastern Screech-Owl which has been calling in my backyard the past three weeks in East Northport. The big sod field on Osborn Rd and Sound Ave yesterday held 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper, 1American Golden-Plover, 16 Black-bellied Plovers, 1 Least Sandpiper, and 32 Killdeer. A Turkey Vulture was also flying above the fields. Another Turkey Vulture flew over CW Post campus yesterday at around 2:00pm. And last but not least, 7 Common Nighthawks were gliding above the soccer fields in East Northport just west of Townline Road yesterday at 5:45pm. [nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park- 18 species of warbler, 5-16-10
I had a fabulous time birding Alley Pond Park this morning. The park was alive with songbirds. I tallied 18 species of warbler, however, from conversations with two other birders there was actually 21 species, but I only recorded 18. The best bird of the day for me was a terrific view of a close foraging Bay-breasted warbler at eye-level which happened to be the third(!) individual of this species. Other birds of note were Solitary Sandpiper(1), Black-billed Cuckoo, Veery(3), Swainson's Thrush(9), Gray-cheeked Thrush(1), Wood Thrush(1), Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos, Scarlet Tanagers(4), Lincoln's sparrows(2), and Baltimore Orioles(5). The Lincoln's sparrows were feeding in the brush bordering the rather large rain puddle just off the main trail.
Warblers present during my three hour stay included: Nashville warbler- 2 Northern Parula- too numerous to count Yellow warbler- 1 near pond Chestnut-sided warbler- 3 Magnolia warbler- 17 Black-throated Blue warbler- 9 Yellow-rumped warbler- 6 Black-throated Green warbler- 4 Blackburnian warbler- 4 Bay-breasted warbler- 3 Blackpoll warbler- 8 Black-and-white warbler- 1 American Redstart- 21 Ovenbird- 9 Northern Waterthrush- 3 Common Yellowthroat- 4 Wilson's warbler- 1 male Canada warbler- 5 The other reported warblers which I did not see included Cape May, Mourning, and a brief look at a Kentucky warbler. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Least terns, Gray-cheeked Thrush
I spent the majority of my morning birding in Sunken Meadow State Park. 5 Least terns and 21 Laughing Gulls were out fishing on the LI Sound viewed from the boardwalk near Field One. I spent most of my time walking the Inner Marsh trail, just past the entrance to Field 2 on the left hand side of park road, and got some really spectacular views of warblers, vireos, and thrushes foraging low in the understory because the winds were rather strong in the upper canopy. The highlights from this morning are below. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Virginia Rail, Solitary Sandpipers, White-crowned sparrow
After Ken Feustel's post I wandered down to Sunken Meadow hoping to pick up some first-of-the-season birds. I first headed to Field 4 where there were the 3 Solitary Sandpipers. As soon as I got out of the car I could here the sounds of warblers and spring migrants in the forest. After getting some nice views of the Solitary Sandpipers I headed uptrail seeing similar birds reported within the last few days. The only new birds not mentioned today were Wood Thrush, Sharp-shinned Hawk flyover, and a Magnolia Warbler. After birding there, I parked in Field 1 and walked down the park road just up to the Osprey Bench near the end of Field 2. A huge portion of Field 2 was flooded attracting Killdeer, another Solitary Sandpiper, and 2 Greater Yellowlegs. The best part of my walk was when I went to the Osprey Bench. While scanning the marsh I heard a Virginia Rail start calling within feet of me in the phragmites. I began to pish and a moment or two later, the Rail popped out. However, as quick as he came he went. Even though it was brief it was still the best bird of the day. The White-crowned Sparrow reported earlier by Ken was feeding along the shoulder of the park road in close proximity of the Osprey bench. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Wilson's Snipe, Blue-headed Vireos, etc
I went to Sunken Meadow State Park early this morning before the rain picked up and was glad I did since it has rained nonstop on the north shore. As I was walking to the edge of the marsh to scan the upper section of Sunken Meadow Creek I flushed 3 Wilson's Snipe. Disappointed I could not get a quick photo, the Snipe zigzagged a bit and came right back to the same spot they originally flushed allowing me to quickly snap a few photos. Approaching the trailhead of the Inner Marsh, I heard a lot of bird activity: Blue-headed Viroes, Yellow warblers, Yellow-rumps, Palm warblers, Common Yellowthroats, Brown Creepers, and Swamp sparrows were all singing and in very good numbers. In addition, a House Wren persistently sang but was so far in the thick brush I could not locate it. Right before it began to pour, I spotted 2 Northern Rough-winged Swallows zooming over the marsh among the numerous Tree and Barn Swallows. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- Yellow warbler, Common Yellowthroat, etc ~4-24-10
A pleasant hike at Sunken Meadow State Park yesterday(4-24-10) from 7:45am-11:00am got me my FOS Yellow warbler and Common Yellowthroat; the former was singing at the edge of the forest and marsh along the Inner Marsh trail at the western end of the park. Calling from the phragmites in the marsh were 2 Common Yellowthroats. The only other warbler species seen included 74 Yellow-rumped warblers and 14 Palm warblers. Down at the cove near the footbridge(Field 3), 3Northern Shovelers, 3 Green-winged Teal, and 2 Ruddy ducks were the only transient waterfowl besides the resident Gadwall, American Black ducks, and Mallards. A quick look on the LI Sound produced 3 Common Loons, 2 Horned Grebes, 36 Brant, and 11 Red-breasted Mergansers. The passerines observed were high in numbers but not in diversity. The majority of migrant songbirds consisted of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Brown Creepers, Hermit thrush, and the four warbler species named above. The breeding birds are establishing terroritory and were quite easy to find: 6 Brown Thrashers, Eastern Towhees, and 5 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, two pairs which are most likely to nest. Foraging at the terminus of the Nissequogue River a ways East of Field 3 were 7 Great Egrets, 11 Snowy Egrets, Greater Yellowlegs, and from another observer, a Spotted sandpiper. 2 Savannah sparrows were feeding on the shoulder of the park road, only noticed after they started singing. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- April 16
I did some birding at Sunken Meadow State Park today in Suffolk County. A quick walk on the Inner Marsh trail at the Western end of the park produced an Eastern Towhee, 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, 2 Brown Creepers, 12 Palm Warblers, 35 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 20+White-throated Sparrows, Gray Catbird, and 3 Hermit Thrush. Only 5 Wood Ducks were in the swamp along the trail. The marsh adjacent to the Park road held 19 Swamp sparrows, and many were perched atop the phragmites singing. The only raptors today included 5 Osprey and 4 Red-tailed Hawks. In the field north of Parking Field 2, a foraging sparrow flock was composed of 8 Savannah sparrows, 1 Field sparrow, and a few White-throated sparrows. In the dunes, located at the eastern end of the park, I found several Song Sparrows bringing my sparrow species total to 6. A scan on the Long Island Sound, east of Field 3, netted me 6 Common Loons, 1 Red-throated Loon, 2 Horned Grebes(all three species were in full breeding plumage), 5 Northern Gannets, and 22Brant. I got my FOY Piping Plover down at the tip of the beach. Wading in the tidal flats just east of Field 3 and in the small cove left of the footbridge were 2 Great Blue Herons, 5 Great Egrets, 4 Snowy Egrets, 2 Black-crowned Night-Herons, and 1 Killdeer. [nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow SP- immature Red-shouldered Hawk, Pine warblers, etc
My trip to Sunken Meadow SP(Suffolk County) rewarded me my first of the year Red-shouldered Hawk. This particular bird was an immature and was perched along the stream down in the backwater of Sunken Meadow Creek. Pine warblers had a good flight last night. I had a total of seven individuals and the majority of them were singing too. The only other warbler species I could find was Yellow-rumped warbler, several throughout the park. Also in the backwater of the Creek I had 9 Wood ducks, 6 Green-winged Teal, a Sharp-shinned Hawk, 5 Eastern Phoebes, several Golden-crowned Kinglets, a Hermit thrush, and 5 Swamp sparrows. The expansive thicketed area a half mile in on the Inner Marsh trail produced a Brown Thrasher and only a few Eastern towhees. The waterfowl that were on Sunken Meadow Creek seemed to have moved out since my last trip on Thursday. The only species on the Creek included Gadwall, 4 Common Merganser hens, American Coot, and a handful of Ring-necked ducks and Bufflehead. I scoped the Long Island Sound from Field 3(eastern end of park) and saw 2 breeding-plumaged Common Loons and about 25 or so Brant. Feeding on the mudflats also at the eastern end of the park were 3 Great Egrets, 2 Great Blue Herons, and two dozen Tree Swallows. The Ospreys were very vocal today and on several occasions were seen bringing nice-sized catches back to the nest. Also doing good for themselves were the 5 Belted Kingfishers hunting on the Sound and in the marsh.
