Been there; done that. You didn't see IBM very active in
OpenOffice.org years ago, did you? There is a huge difference between
 a corporate-lead and a community-led open source one. A community-led
one is much more welcoming to other large companies.. If a company
wanted to get involved with OpenOffice.org before then there was all
the messiness with dealing with Sun and wondering about whether Sun's
priorities would dominate over everything else. Look at the constant
battles Novell and Sun had, for example. This changes with the move
to Apache. So I'd recommend that we point this out to companies,
small and large. We shouldn't let past failures in this area
discourage us too much. It is a new situation now.

Yap. I mean, your business theory is great. But there are some
holes in it on the reality side that we need to overcome. It may work
for IBM, but not all the other business. Maybe some more mails? Some
more talks with people? Some other strategy?

Now sure, some companies will just be interested in training or
whatever, and have zero interest in participating. However, those
companies will be at a disadvantage compared to competing companies
that are participate. There is a level of information, skill,
expertise, even influence that comes from participating on the inside,
rather than watching from the outside.

I occasionally hear some local business doing OpenOffice support,

interests to connect to the open source community. (Afraid of us

A trainer can easily switch to training users for Google Docs, or
Microsoft Office, if they need to. So they are not as dependent on
 the success of our project.

I do not know if they are trainers or else. Someone refer me to
them that they are doing OpenOffice jobs (technical? training?
application development? anything else? I don't know.) and they may
need my help. They never respond.

That said, there are some holes in your theory.

Who and how many speakers from China are having this VISA problem?

Indeed, the recent situation was very bad because the German embassy
doesn't have the resources to handle the strong demand for German visas
in China, e.g. they have only two telephone lines to make appointments
 for submitting visa applications.

Just last week the German embassy started to outsource the visa
application process to a private agency which will certainly make
everything easier, e.g. they are checking each application for
completeness and correctness while previously visa applications were
declined deliberately without giving any information about what went wrong.

The website of the visa agency can be found here:

The service is available in English, Chinese and German.

unowinreg.dll: can't load ia 32-bit .dll on a amd 64-bit platform

Dear all,

The unowinreg.dll from OpenOffice SDK does not work with Windows

This requires a slightly complex answer since there are differences
 between theory and practice.

In theory, when you upload an extension to extensions.openoffice.org,
you needn't provide an update XML file: the repository knows about the
mechanism and automatically generates it. Moreover, OpenOffice knows
where to ask for the update so, if you use the official repository to
host your extension, updates will magically work with no need of actions
from the developer (not even specify an update URL), aside possibly from
making sure that the version number always increases.

In practice, the process is broken. The point where it breaks is the
fact that extensions.openoffice.org does not provide the real update
information but it sends a hardcoded answer instead, saying that no
updates are available. This was done back in the Oracle times for some
reasons - probably traffic, but I have no clue here, maybe it was just
 broken.

Fact is, what you ask for is already available in theory and I have seen
it working for a period before it was disabled in 2010. But it isn't
available in practice at the moment, and it hasn't been for years.

On the application side (the OpenOffice program) everything should still
be working, even though I've recently seen an issue where Ariel
explained we might have some regressions on the OpenOffice side too:
 https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121201

mmh, I was not ware that this function was disabled in 2010 and I don't
know the reason for it. But Roberto has explained it quite well and the
idea behind it was exactly that for extensions hosted in our repo the
update information is generated automatically and the extensions
shouldn't add further update information in their description.xml.

We should figure out if the mechanism still works and should enable it.

Ariel reported indeed a problem with his updates but we have to check
this in general because I at least was not able to reproduce all
reported problems. But this is a separate issue and have to fixed
 independently.

Do we want to continue this?

 Example Writer:
 Linux:

 Windows:

 OSX: Not required
 Mime-type:

I thought we were talking about the top-left logo, not the favicon.

And, why do you choose the writer icon instead of the application icon?

The original discussion on the lack of color of OO3 generated different
options which were ignored, should we adopt them now?

Default Toolbar for Certain Languages

2012-10-11 Thread imacat
I would like to ask if it is possible for a default toolbar for
certain languages, but not all. Out local community was asking a
Chinese punctuation toolbar for a long time, which they were used to it
since MS Office 97. Unlike English punctuation, it is very trouble to
input Chinese full-width punctuation. This toolbar helped them a lot.
I submit a request, and am amazed how fast words got spread and people
are enthusiastic about getting this done.

http://goo.gl/mod/GTi6

I know it is easy to do it in with a extension of BASIC macros. Is
it possible to include it in the OpenOffice installation? Or maybe
hard-code it?

Which See Gull is Our Logo?

2012-10-03 Thread imacat
Dear all,

I was working on some simple art work. I found two versions of see
gulls:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/528985_356794727712744_1341584190_n.jpg

You can see there is a difference in color, in the area of the
light, in the position of the see gull and in the shadow of the blue
ball. The former one seem to came from

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/27834483/aoo.svg

And the latter one came from

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/download/attachments/27834483/AOOIL.svg

On this page

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/x/c7ioAQ

Both these files are dated almost the same. So, which one is our
logo now?

Anywhere to know who submit the? and also document this logo further,
specially the gradient annotations such as the light and the dark as well
as the light point to the darkest point.

I just produced a couple more images symbols as well as some application

Another point that came to my mind is what happens with web crawler
bots registered on the forums: I think that google, yahoo and all the
others are still logging on (and indexing) the old URLs and ignoring
the new ones. In fact, when you perform a web search on google, for
example, about AOO all results that point to the forums show the old
 URL...

Are we exposing two different URL's for the forums, with the same
 content?

Exactly. You can enter the forum from both, the user.service... and
 the forum.openoffice... addresses.

I know what we need to do. We need to either:

 (1) Deploy Apache Traffic Server in front of the Forums on the ooo-forums
VM. We have that on ooo-wiki which is why that redirection works better.

 (2) Modify the apache.conf on ooo-forums VM to do a permanent redirection.

This part I'm planning. Not done yet because there is still problem
with forum session handling, and I'm still investigating. Any hint is
 welcome.

This is done, after solving the cookie problem. Sorry for taking so
long. The forum is now fully on http://forum.openoffice.org/ .

Here is the process (with minor modifications) from the original:

You can read about the duties of a PMC Chair here:
http://www.apache.org/dev/pmc.html#chair

1) Nominations would be open for 72 hours. Anyone can nominate
someone for the role. Self-nominations are fine. And of course
nominations can be declined.

2) If there is only one nomination, then we are done, provided there
are no sustained objections.

3) If there is more than one nomination we discuss on the list for
another 72 hours. Discussion would primarily be on ooo-dev, but some
subjects might be directed to ooo-private.

4) If after 72-hours discussion there are still two or more nominees
then we vote. Everyone would be welcome to vote, but binding votes
would be from PPMC members. If there are more than 2 candidates,
there will be a run-off vote between the top two nominees if none of
the nominees receive an outright majority.

(note: the last item was changed from the original - nothing more
complicated than a two way run-off is needed, as it is unlikely we have more
 than two nominees.)
I think this process is straight forward enough that we should just begin
 the process now.

Should we have something more than the announcement from the ASF board?

Re: [DISCUSS] granting processes for fund allocation for ACEU 2012

Thank you for the hard work for this detailed plan.

 Hi,

I would like to discuss how the grainting processes for fund allocation
for ApacheCon EU (ACEU) 2012 could work.
Two processes are needed. One for granting travel expense subsidy and
one for ticket discount for non-committers of the OpenOffice community.

The goal is to reach (lazy) consensus on the granting processes in the
 next 72 hours.

Here are my ideas regarding such processes:
 (1) ticket discount for non-committers:
 - 30 x 100 EUR ticket discount for non-committers can be granted.

 - To apply for the ticket discount people should send post to
 ooo-private. The details should be:
 -- subject = [ACEU 2012 - ticket discount] Name
 -- content:
 --- full name
 --- email address
--- affiliation to the OpenOffice community (something like: user,
 contributing X, translator, ...)
--- description why applying for the ticket discount and why support is
 needed.
--- job or eduation status (something like: student, employee,
 freeflancer, ...)

 - Announce on our mailing lists and in our forum that application
process is open until ending date - announcement date should be at
least 7 days ahead of the ending date.

 - The small group of volunteers collect the applications. The group
selects not more than 30 and post the decision details on ooo-private.
The selection process should not take more than 2 days.
The selection shall be based on the given description and the
 job/eduation status.

 - Send out corresponding notifications and details how to get the ticket
 discount.

[Note: I will get in contact with ACEU 2012 planners, if it is possible
to get a promotion code for our ticket discount.]
[Another note: I will get in contact with treasu...@apache.org to assure
ASF's charity status and clarify the actual spending of the money]

 (2) travel expense subsidy for OpenOffice community members:
 - 10 x 300 resp. 600 EUR travel expense subsidy can be granted.

 - To apply for the travel expense subsidy people should send a post to
 ooo-private. The details should be:
 -- subject = [ACEU 2012 - travel subsidy] Name
 -- content:
 --- full name
 --- email address
--- affiliation to the OpenOffice community (something like:
committer, user, contributing X, translator, ...)
 --- Apache ID (if available)
--- accepted or stand-by speaker at ACEU?
--- description why applying for the travel expense subsidy and why
 support is needed.
--- job or eduation status (something like: student, employee,
 freelancer, ...)
 --- estimated travel expense
--- estimated needed accommodation - # of nights
--- other available funding (something like: corporate, ACEU - TAC,
 ...)
--- applying for 300 EUR or 600 EUR?

 - Announce on our mailing lists and in our forum that application
process is open until ending date - announcement date should be at
least 7 days ahead of the ending date.

 - The small group of volunteers collect the applications. The group
selects not more than 10 and post the decision details on ooo-private.
The selection process should not take more than 3 days.
The selection should consider the following:
-- Application shall hold the following conditions, otherwise it is invalid
--- no corporate funding and no TAC funding
--- travel expense must be at least 300 EUR
--- accommodation needed for at least 2 nights
-- The selection shall be based on the given description and the
 job/eduation status.
-- Applications are selected in the following order:
--- invited (accepted or stand-by) speakers
 --- committers
 --- non-committers

 - Send out corresponding notifications and details how to get the ticket
 discount.

[Note: I will get in contact with treasu...@apache.org to assure ASF's
charity status and clarify the actual spending of the money.]

 Please provide your input.

 Best regards, Oliver.

Re: [DISCUSS] [PMC] Proposed PMC List

2012-09-24 Thread imacat
I feel honored to be listed. I would like to help PMC if there is a
chance.

In any case, I suggest at least one female should be included in the
PMC, to encourage the contribution of females in the community and bring
diverse voices in PMC. It is very important to encourage more and more
female contributors to join the community, and make them feel that
OpenOffice is theirs', not of some male geeks.

I also suggest to include Asians. From the past experience of
OpenOffice.org, the main problem of the Asian community is that we are
not included in the project. The problem of Asian text processing is
very different than that of Latin text. It was very difficult for many
most important Asian problems to be heard by non-Asian people. It shall
change and make a significant difference when Asians are included in PMC.

It's still good to have had this option, so we are sure that everybody
who wanted to participate in the process had the opportunity to do so.
And it's even better that in the end everybody decided to make their
 nomination in public.

I am looking forward to Andrew's summary and from my perspective we
should already start thinking what will be next?

Before moving on with all the steps you listed (and I agree with all of
them) we will need to actually see the summary and derive the potential
PMC from there. So far I've seen opinions ranging from including only
the 10 most popular nominees to including everybody who received at
least one nomination. Probably the best solution is somewhere in
between, but once we have the summary the situation will probably be
 clearer.

   Andrea.

by users. The first one is that forum notifications still arrive with
only the old URL. Also, there are users experimenting problems with
automatic log-in not working on the new URL.

 (1) Deploy Apache Traffic Server in front of the Forums on the ooo-forums VM.
We have that on ooo-wiki which is why that redirection works better.

 (2) Modify the apache.conf on ooo-forums VM to do a permanent redirection.

This part I'm planning. Not done yet because there is still problem
with forum session handling, and I'm still investigating. Any hint is
welcome.

There are probably actions the forum sysadmin needs to take.

The runbooks for both ooo-wiki and ooo-forums need to be checked if they are
fully up to date. TerryE's falling out with Infra was in part over Infra's
understandable requirement that the runbooks be quickly consumable by anyone
in text. He refused and so these are at risk.

 Regards,
 Dave

If so that is bad for Google. It could penalize the forums
in search results due to the duplicate content penalty (essentially
it looks spammy to have identical content at multiple different
 URL's).

 See:
 http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/09/demystifying-duplicate-content-penalty.html

The preferred way is to either:

 1) Redirect from the old URL to the new URL

 or

 2) Use the re=canonical directive to ;et Google know what the
 preferred URL is;
 http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html

Could a redirection solve all this problems at once?

 Ricardo

 Hmm did some more research.

 According to this:
 https://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/entry/oracle_jdk_and_javafx_sdk

 ---
Oracle's JDK and JavaFX release supports OS X Lion on any 64-bit
capable Intel-based Mac. Specifically, ___our implementation is 64-bit
only so it requires a 64-bit operating system___.

 (snip)

What if I want a 32-bit JVM, or support for older PPC-based Macs?
There are community efforts based on OpenJDK to build JDK 7 for other
configurations, easily found using your favorite search engine. We
 applaud these efforts! :-)
 ---

So if I read that right Oracle´s official Java7 for OSX is 64-bit
only, but community builds of OpenJDK (which is the same source code
base) are provided in 32-bit version.

That means you probably want to try this
 http://code.google.com/p/openjdk-osx-build/downloads/detail?name=OpenJDK-OSX-1.7-universal-u6-jre-b24-20120813.dmg
(there are separate builds named x64 so I guess the above is 32bit)

 Source page:
 http://code.google.com/p/openjdk-osx-build/

Keep in mind I´m shooting in the dark here as I have no Mac to test.

Thank you for the diagnosis. I shall tell the user to try it.

Also, the user reports a screen capture to me, saying that he cannot
click on either the Don't Restore Windows or the Restore Windows button.

I suppose this dialog is generated by the system, right? Or will
hanged OpenOffice block the dialog from receiving the focus? (Sorry I
do not know anything about MacOS.)

 Good luck!

Thank you, Fernando and Rony, for trying so much to help. ^^;

I guess it's about 32bit/64bit integer transformation, though I'm
not sure. Maybe memory leak with integer transformation? Or falsely

3.4.1 Crashes on MacOS 10.7.4

2012-08-24 Thread imacat
Dear all,

One of our local user (he is not good in English) reported that
3.4.1 crashes on his MacOS 10.7.4, with clean new user profile. I have
no MacOS to test, so I reported it here to see if there is anyone that
can help. Raphael suggested that he should turn on both 32bit and 64bit
Java. He did, but it still crashes.

He uses Macbook Pro 13 Intel c2d 2.26GHz. He barely found a
message in the system log saying that:

12/8/25 12:16:52.533am soffice: Warning - conversion from 64 bit to 32
bit integral value requested within NSPortCoder, but the 64 bit value
18446744073709551615 cannot be represented by a 32 bit value

I have no clue on this. Could anyone help? Or should I ask for
more information? Thank you.

I have 3.4.1 running on Ubuntu 11.10. My use is mainly for text editing, but
I have done very little of that in the past few days; I have had no crashes.

Personal experience and reports on the User Forum indicate that the default
startup User Profile can sometimes be corrupt, even on clean (i.e, no
previous OO) installs. We on the Forum know that a very large proportion of
OpenOffice problems can be cured by using a new User Profile. In the case of
an advanced user, with much customisation in the profile, it is possible to
rename the old profile and later bring forward components individually to the
new profile until the bad component is isolated. Life is not long enough for
 this, in my opinion!

Sorry for being stupid. It works after renaming the user profile on
Debian. Sorry that I was not reminded of this solution.

There may be another issue for us to make OpenOffice more resistnce
to corrupted profiles. But that's another problem.

I shall test my other OSs now.

you are using some Java API. A nice idea would trying to do everything
with AOO API, so that the same example can then be written in AOO
 Basic, PyUNO, etc.
That said, I can't guarantee you'll find everything you need, but in
any case this is a good chance to ask for AOO API enhancements.

No, that's currently impossible. Actually I'm not good at
OpenOffice source, but at client UNO API application. I studied it long
ago. And I doubt if that is any useful.

If Java can do it better, why not? I'm not using Java because I
love Java, but because I can link to the whole Java SDK and everything
else. I had even created an Android App using UNO API earlier this
year. Will UNO API does that everything else (including the Android
library), too? I'm afraid that is not necessary, and is not possible.
The same goes for Python, C++, too.

Besides, UNO API is slow. UNO API constantly serializes mass amount
of objects in and out through network socket. I can save this if I only
does the necessary parts with UNO API, but leave other object exchange
within a same Java process.

And UNO API is tedious. The UNO type casting and exception handling
sucks. (Read my code.) If I do everything with UNO API (if that is
possible), I might not finish it in 400 lines and by now, and it makes
others more difficult to read the code.

I believe OpenOffice Basic tried to do everything before, but
failed. It is fine to keep it as it is.

Well, this came to my mind:

I do not know if the author draw this motion picture cell by cell,
but I could write a UNO program to do that, and it shall take less than
a couple of hours to generate that kind of stop motion video. This is
not hard.

Maybe this can be my next topic to submit to the local conference

Having a video converter which creates the coarse pixel frames, all you need
is one matrix of color values per frame and script to dump them into the
 Calc document.

Matrix of 16 colors calculated from 32x32 random values:

 http://www.mediafire.com/file/zfw69gddrcwacoc/PixelMatrix.ods

Cool. How would we get the pixel level numeric data into the
spreadsheet initially? I assume there is nothing in the macro
language that can parse image data at that level. So we'd need to call
 out to a helper library?

Also, one other nice time to have -- not strictly necessary, but would
improve the results -- picking an optimal color palette that best
matches the colors in the original image. There are some standard
 algorithms for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_quantization

Is there any interest in making a more formal contest out of this?

I don't know what we can offer the winner other then eternal fame and
glory, but a contest could look like this:

 1) Goal is to using OpenOffice Calc to automate conversion of a given
image into cell-based artwork, using background colors. Variable
character data in cells may also be used (optional) as an
 anti-aliasing technique.

 2) Code would need to be based on AOO Calc 3.4.0, using
macros/scripts. Calls to external non script code would be permitted
only for the initial extraction of pixel data from the image. All
code would need to be made available for the judges to review.

 3) Some images would be provided in advance. Others images would be
unknown to the contestants and would be run only after the code was
 submitted.

 4) Judges would score all submissions based on rendering quality,
 speed and technical elegance.

If there is interest, I can work with a subset of interested parties
to define this further. We'd do that in private, and of course those
who define the contest or judge it would be ineligible for
 participating int he contest.

If something like this could be done, do we think there would be any interest?

I do not think so. At least Jürgen verified this issue, and he is
not using the zh-TW build. (or is it a yes?)

I suppose (at least for my part) it is a icon cache problem, as it
is solved once i deleted IconCache.db and re-login. As my cache that
cause the problem is deleted, I cannot reproduce this problem again. (I
should have renamed it, not deleted it.)

However, I suppose there might be some problem that makes Windows
fail to refresh the icon from cache. Though it may not be possible to
identify this problem.

 OK. Thanks.

mmh, I read this with mixed feelings. We work as one team on a new

propose them as show stopper. Everything is fine.

We had several snapshots and I don't know when this problem was
introduced and I still don't understand it and where it comes from. I am
not aware of any changes here. I am currently checking the latest build

But I don't like comments like this, if issue XY is not fixed I vote
with -1. If people can not fix issues they help with early testing and
not only on last minute testing on potential RCs.

Sorry but that is not the way I would like to work on the project in a

It would have been better if you simply would have proposed this issue
as a potential showstopper. We don't have a vote running at the moment.

You are correct. I'm aware of the problem when I sent my mail,

 Agreed.

Speaking of the OOo/AOO Wiki community the Wiki has been a target of
attacks by Spambots or Annoybots for a long time. Please see e.g.

 title=Special:RecentChanges**limit=500http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChangeslimit=500

which shows that most of the changelog entries are caused by these
Annoybots subscribing about 50 dummy users every day.

I'm not sure if this is critical because it could blow up the service
but browsing the recent changes list feels like analyzing the contents
of a garbage bin instead of a hey these are interesting updates

resilient against these attacks as we are a high profile target getting
plenty of page hits on the Wiki and there are also some people that
really want our project to die and put some effort into it. When our
three Wikis get overhauled this should be a consideration.

You need no account to read the Wiki, so its purpose giving support is not
 restricted.

Hummm... That could prevent new contributors to join the project, but have
no interest in joining something more, let's say, official. For example:

There are other ways to block bots and fake users.

Thanks for reminding us the spam problem. Luckily, the spam bots

I do not favor closing its new account registration. If we want to

Readonly on Password-protected Documents (was: NewWikiMainPage)

2012-06-05 Thread imacat
Dear Phil,

Reading again, I found that this is unrelated to Wiki. I renamed
the subject.

I cannot verify this on my 3.4.0, 3.3.0 and 3.2.1, Debian linux
x86_64. What OpenOffice version and OS version are you using?

 Rob,

Thanks for the quick response. I tried the process in paragraph 1 below and
could still not edit the doc. When I hit the edit icon on the read only the
document there was a border around it, no password was requested and I
 couldn't make changes.

Can you give me instruction on where and how to save the document with a file
encryption password. I have been doing it through the Save As control and
then Save with Password which causes it to become read only.

I have also tried it through the Security tool bar and not checked read only,
but once I attach a password it becomes read only even if the box is not
 checked.

I checked the help menu and saved as instructed below in that and it became
read only. Also I could not remove the password by unclicking the box.

 Protecting All Documents When Saving
All documents that are saved in OpenDocument format can be saved with a
password. Documents that are saved with a password cannot be opened without
the password. The content is secured so that it cannot be read with an
external editor. This applies to content, graphics and OLE objects.

   Turning on protection
Choose File - Save As and mark the Save with password check box. Save
 the document.

   Turning off protection
Open the document, entering the correct password. Choose File - Save As
and clear the Save with password check box.

I never had this problem before I went to the recent upgrade of 3.3.

 Thanks,

 Phil

   Hi Phil,

It sounds like the document was saved with a file sharing password.
When the document is loaded, look for the edit file icon on the
toolbar. If you click that it will prompt you for the password and
   then switch into edit mode.

But note that it is not typical to use the file sharing password
feature. If you don't want the read-only behavior you should just
save with the file encryption password/

Re: Propose to Integrate Old OO Wiki and New AOO Wiki

2012-06-05 Thread imacat
I have no opinion whether to join the two Wikis, or discard the
current MediaWiki. Actually, the current content on MediaWiki is quite
outdated and misleading. We may need significant amount of effort to
keep the MediaWiki dated. If we want to keep MediaWiki, we may need to
discard a large amount of the content and start from beginning.

However, I would like to remind you that, some nice people here are
already starting this work. If we want to discard MediaWiki, we may
need to consider how to move the whole Wiki community, not just the Wiki
content.

It's relatively easy to start a new Wiki or discard an existing one.
But to form and keep a live Wiki community is a lot harder than just
moving.

We actually already have a 3rd wiki, for developers:
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOODEV/Wiki+Home

 Here is the history:

The MediaWiki instance was the legacy wiki, used by OpenOffce.org project

When the Apache project was create, we had two new wiki's created.
Remember at that time we had not yet migrated the MediaWiki over to
Apache, and it was not certain whether we would be able to do it.

 The two new wikis were:

 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Wiki+HomeThis
was the community wiki where anyone could create an account and edit
 content.

 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOODEV/Wiki+Home This
 wiki was restricted to committers.

The OOODEV wiki made it suitable for content that might make it into a
product release. For example logos, draft help, etc. If this was put
on an open wiki, where anyone would access it, then we'd need to do
much more work to track permissions if we wanted to move something
from the wiki into SVN for use in a release. Having a wiki that was
only writable by committers ensure that the content is always under
 ALv2.

If we want to go to a single wiki, I think we should resolve the
license issue. And we should also encourage CTR by ensuring that
there is an email notification for changes. We do that for CWiki
 today.

accumulate new project data to benefit the project and contributors..Please

Wiki, Forum Host Names (was: [wiki] login not secure...)

2012-05-29 Thread imacat
Dear all,

I think it might be better to start a new thread.

Anyway, the current wiki/forums hostnames are:

1. wiki.services.openoffice.org
   user.services.openoffice.org

(The user host only hosts user forums, nothing more.)

There is suggestion to shorten them to:

2. wiki.openoffice.org
   user.openoffice.org

However, I would like to revised proposal#2 to:

3. wiki,openoffice.org
   forum.openoffice.org

Or simply,

4. w.openoffice.org
   f.openoffice.org

Any ideas? Or any other proposal?

 Hi,

The infra team had a lot of extra work with our project because of our
additional and special requirements to migrate a very huge existing infra
structure to Apache. This important piece of work is often not mentioned but
was a very huge task in our project over the last 10 month and the infra
structure team have supported us very well. Thanks to all who was involved
 here.

We have learned from each other and we as project has benefit from the
collaboration with the infra team. And I am sure we will in the future as
 well.

From a project perspective we will hopefully be able to find more volunteers
who are able to support the infra team/project with future and further
maintenance work related to specific things for our project but also to
 support infra in general.

 Thanks to all

Actually, I heard people very excited, talking about the release of
Apache OpenOffice 3.4. I suppose I do not need to care about
LibreOffice anymore. Someone asked me the question: What about
LibreOffice? I have nothing to answer. I think it reveals the
pressure on the LibreOffice side.

As I said, the only real problem we had was that we have no release
yet. Once we have our first release, the problem is gone.

That's true... In general though, I've found that if people
mention OpenOffice, that many LO-related people will immediately
jump in and turn the conversation towards LO (for example,
someone will post or tweet something about OpenOffice and
they will immediately reply Hey, what about LibreOffice),
but I don't see nearly that amount of the reverse behavior.

I guess partly that's to be expected...

Re: [PROPOSAL] Separation of Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese

2012-05-08 Thread imacat
FYI, I found that http://zh.openoffice.org/ is a redirection to
http://www.openoffice.org/zh now, which then separates into two
directory trees. The uniformed Chinese site does not exists. The
content is already separated. Keeping a uniformed Chinese entry page
does not make sense anymore.

This also means that separation of Traditional and Simplified
Chinese is not a big work at all.

Well, I'm not thinking about saving more time. I'm thinking about
participation - which way may attract more local community that join our
work. If we have separate sites what local community feels more
comfortable, the two languages may each attract more people to join our
work. Currently the zh-only site and especially forum attract only
people from China, which is not right.

Creating two sites requires more work, yes, but that is where we can
 call for volunteer for. ^_*'

Besides, the current Chinese site is far too outdated. The
OpenOffice.org Chinese Project become history for years. I was
updating the 3.4 release information, and it come to my mind that, why
 not propose site separation altogether?

If we agree, I shall start doing this in this week. Currently we
only need home page, download page and a news page. Working on two
sites for these pages is small work.

Look at it also from the directory layout perspective:
 https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/
Each language is a subdirectory of /ooo-site/trunk/content

We already have an example of similar differences. For example we
have both a Portuguese website (/pt) and a Brazilian Portuguese
 website (/pt-br).

 So it sounds like you would do this;
 1. create a new directory, content/zh-tw
 2. svn copy the existing content from the old directory to the new directory
 3. work on that content until it is ready to publish

Hmm... Currently they are actually two directory trees:

http://www.openoffice.org/zh/new/zh_tw/
http://www.openoffice.org/zh/new/zh_cn/

So I would prefer to strip the /zh/news/ parts, and keep them as two
equal directory trees. Maybe keep the /zh/index.html, which redirects
people to the new location according to their Accept-Language header,
and provide choices if both zh-tw and zh-cn do not appear in user's
Accept-Language header.

I think the issue is not to separate zh-tw from zh, but to separate
existing zh-tw and zh-cn. This is different from pt and pt-br.

 4. Enter a JIRA issue requesting Infrastructure team to create a
subdomain zh-tw.openoffice.org that points to content/zh-tw

As they are merely redirection, I do not think it is necessary to
create new virtual hosts only for redirection.

 5. Maybe also ask Infra to redirect requests from the old site to the new site

Good idea. ^_*' Thank you.

[PROPOSAL] Separation of Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese

2012-05-07 Thread imacat
Dear all,

I would like to propose to separate the Traditional Chinese website
from the Simplified Chinese website. Currently they are on a same
website: zh.openoffice.org. I would suggest to split it into
zh-cn.openoffice.org and zh-tw.openoffice.org (or zh-hans.openoffice.org
and zh-hant.openoffice.org).

Currently there are two copies of each page on a same website, which
is already separated realitically. The issues for Traditional Chinese
and Simplified Chinese are quite different. The two language may still
cooperate, but the separation will make the maintenance easier and more
close to the local communities.
