RE: using the plextalk pocket or book pluse as an external microphone on computer
Hello, You could do the following: On the BP, start a recording by pushing the record button and leave it in pause mode. Place the BP into Monitor Output mode. With a cable, connect the BP's headphone jack to the mike/line-in on your computer. You might have to adjust the settings for this input on your computer. You might have to adjust the output volume on the BP. This will allow you to use the BP's external mike as an external mike for your computer. Press tab and you will be in a field where you can choose the file type. Press down-arrow until you find the file type you want. I hit it twice to save as MPEG (MP3). Then you can hit Tab a few times until you get to a list of attributes; where you can change the MP3 file attributes (128kbps/192kbps, mono/stereo). *** iPods can make pacemakers malfunction: study (Reuters) Published Thu, 10 May 2007 20:07:49 GMT Reuters - iPods can cause cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by interfering with the electromagnetic equipment monitoring the heart, according to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on Thursday. Yahoo! News By Debra Sherman 1 hour, 10 minutes ago CHICAGO (Reuters) - iPods can cause cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by interfering with the electromagnetic equipment monitoring the heart, according to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on Thursday. The study tested the effect of the portable music devices on 100 patients, whose mean age was 77, outfitted with pacemakers. Electrical interference was detected half of the time when the iPod was held just 2 inches from the patient's chest for 5 to 10 seconds. The study did not examine any portable music devices other than iPods, which are made by Apple Inc. In some cases, the iPods caused interference when held 18 inches from the chest. Interfering with the telemetry equipment caused the device to misread the heart's pacing and in one case caused the pacemaker to stop functioning altogether. The study was held at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute at Michigan State University. The results were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society annual meeting in Denver. Jay Thaker, lead author of the study and a student at Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan, concluded that iPod interference can lead physicians to misdiagnose actual heart function. Thaker, whose father is an electrophysiologist and whose mother is a rheumatologist, said he asked his dad about a potential interaction between pacemakers and iPods. "We looked online but didn't see anything. Then, one of his patients asked him if there would be a problem, so (my father) put me in touch with Dr. Krit (Jongnarangsin)," Thaker said in a telephone interview. Jongnarangsin, a long-time friend of Thaker's father, is the senior author of the study and an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan. "Most pacemaker patients are not iPod users," Jongnarangsin said. For that reason, he said, it is unclear how often iPods cause misdiagnosis. "This needs to be studied more," Jongnarangsin added. Thaker said he is interested in doing a similar study about how implantable cardioverter defibrillators, known as ICDs, are affected by iPods. That digital to analog converter can be in your sound card on your pc or in your stereo's cd player. The amplifier can be in your sound card or as part of your stereo system. When you are comparing sound systems, you have to make sure that the music is being played flat; no adjustments to the bass, treble or high end. You have to make sure that your settings in Win Amp and WmP are not tweaking the sound. So, when you are asking about sound quality with these guys, you first have to ask "what part dose Win Amp or Windows Media Player or the program reading your files on your stereo cd player perform in the process and what influence will it have on the actual sound?". I presume it is in the reading of the cd (or file) and the ability of the software to read exactly what is on the file. So, if you have a perfect cd, will they perform the same? One can prefer the usability, friendliness, functionality and so on, one over the other. But, how easy is it to say that one has a better sound quality output than the other? Hey guy, this is getting kind of long. Time to stick your finger in your eye, start rocking and go back into dream mode. But, as far as CDs, I'm not sure I understand what either you or Andre is complaining about. Of course, I rip all my CDs to my hard drive, and play them with Winamp, from there. I don't play the physical CD with any player. But, when I play an album in the way I've describe, I can't hear any loss in sound quality or listenability. And, when I play Days of Future Past (the *original* concept album), it sounds just as good through Winamp, from my hard drive, as it does on my Cd deck. RE: windows media 11 file associations
Hi Don, I don't know about Vista, but, in XP, you can go to the control panel, folder options, file types tab, down-arrow to MP3 and specify the program to use when opening the MP3. Vista must have something similar. I have a desktop machine running Windows Vista and Windows Media Player 11. I prefer winamp, so installed it on the machine and under file types I selected all for the file associations. If I play mp3 files from within wimamp they play just fine, but if I simply hit enter on the file I want from windows explorer, the file plays in windows media. I can't seem to find the place in wmp 11 to change the file associations settings in order to prevent wmp from automatically play the mp3's. Does anyone know how I can get the files to play automatically in winamp? Then I discovered the 24 bit setting and Winamp, got both mad and Winamp on the same page, and I've never looked back. The first thing you need to do is to find the now playing options in the preferences dialog box, and check the 24 bit box. Next go to the mad configure dialog box, and to the decode tap. Then look for resolution. Set your resolution to 24 bit. Then go to equalization, and link eq to Winamp. After going through all that, you should be all set. This thing really shines with mp3 files above 160kb. Give it a shot, I think you'll like it if you really give it a chance. If you need any further help, just let me know. Ripping from CD - highest quality
Hello to the list, I would like to rip my cd's to my hard drive. In terms of the best sound quality alone, Does it matter which software I use; Media Player, WinAmp or what ever else is out there? Or, put another way, how can I get the best rip? Media Player's highest quality (on my machine) seems to be: Bit Rate 1411kbps, Audio sample size 16 bit, Channels 2 (stereo), Audio sample rate 44 kHz, Audio format PCM. Would this reflect the characteristics of the cd? If the cd had higher numbers, would Media Player (or the others) recreate the same as the cd? I guess I need a quick lesson on this stuff. Thanks. I haven't updated yet, but according to the readme file, this shouldn't be a problem for blind people, because one doesn't have to use a menu to do it. The most important new feature is SDHC compatibility. The Edirol R-09 now works with the new SDHC cards. SDHC is the name of the new SD card specification 2.0, which standardizes the new SD card capacities from 4 to 32 gigabytes. There are none SDHC cards of 4 gigs available, but it's proberbly much safer to use an SDHC card, and I've already seen eight gigabytes SDHC cards. Somebody already has uploaded the firmware to a yousendit address and at taperssection.com, a couple of people have used this firmware to successfully update their Edirol recorder: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=A6A3B0B0242A100C <*** Michael Lang ***> ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. RE: Feeling like an idiot never felt so good!
Hi listers, When it comes to this sound stuff, I'm just learning. When I look at the audio for my fujitsu s7010dc-3 notepad specs, it says, Audio "SigmaTel ST9751T Codec, 6 channels sound support Dolby Headphone Utility to emulate realistic surround sound using conventional stereo headphones on DVD models" I don't understand! Is this referring to the actual sound card or the software that drives it or what? And, where might I find the specs for what ever this is? RE: Mail Rule
Hi Morey, I don't use Outlook Express. I use Outlook. But, my comment might help. My rule is as follows: Rule description (click an underlined value to edit): Apply this rule after the message arrives sent to Pc-audio@pc-audio.org and on this machine only play PcAudio.wav and move it to the PcAudio folder When I first set up my rule, it didn't work. I didn't have the " and on this machine only" set properly. It had something like "and on other machine" or something like that. I tried and tried and tried; until I noticed this problem. I changed it and it now works. I don't know if Outlook Express allows you to also play a sound. Outlook does and I think its really cool. I have MP3 files set up; one for each Outlook folder to which I'm moving mail. When I get a message from PcAudio, Outlook moves it to my PcAudio folder and plays my sound file for that move. .MP4 - How to play
I have Windows Media Player 10 installed. I want to play MP4 files. In Media Player, I went to View, Plug-ins, Download plug-ins and ended up on a "Plug-ins for Windows Media Player" web site where I found DivX Version: 6.2.2. I downloaded and installed it. On the web site, it says that after you download and install a plug-in, you should be able to see it under View in Media Player. I don't see it and I still can't play my MP4 file. Did I install the right thing? Any suggestions? I mean other than "Use WinAmp". Thanks. RE: .MP4 - how to play?
The MP4 file format contains the media information of an MPEG-4 presentation in a flexible, extensible format which facilitates interchange, management, editing, streaming and presentation of the media. This presentation may be local to the system containing the presentation or via other stream delivery mechanism (a TransMux) while the file format is independent of any particular TransMux. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Donald Goosens Sent: 2006/05/08 10:45 To: 'PC audio discussion list. RE: BookPort: Can one go to a specific page?
Hi Michael, This is what the BP manual says about the topic. Page Number The menu's Page Number option serves two purposes. First, it informs you of the current page number. Second, it lets you move to another page in the current book. To move to another page, press the 5 key to select the Page Number menu option, then use the numbers on the keypad to type in the number of the desired page. Finally, press the # key to complete your request or press the * key to cancel. When you press #, Book Port will either move to the desired page or it will beep if you entered a page number that is not valid for the current book. Note that the Page Number function accepts only Arabic numbers, so if you want to turn to a page at the beginning of a book that occurs before page 1, you will have to go to page 1 then use the Back Page key to move exactly to the desired page. Be aware that not all books you send to Book Port contain page number information. In the case of a file that does not contain any page information, Book Port uses an approximation to represent pages. The Page Number feature is a particularly useful command, and you may wish to take advantage of the fact that Book Port remembers the menu option you last used, so you may simply press the 0 key to access the menu and have the page number immediately accessible. So, to answer your question, Yes you can. While I know nothing about MP3 tags, I have to solve the following problem. I have 700 MP3's. I want to create/update the MP3 tags to reflect the song title, artist, etc. What would your solution be? RE: why goldwave?
Is there any software out there that would allow you to speed up the recording without the high pitch? Reed -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: February 24, 2006 1:24 PM To: Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: why goldwave? The reason I wanted Goldwave is because I ordered something from Audible in format 1, not the format 4 that the bookport supports. Apparently this is only available in format 1. I absolutely hate regular speed reading and was not going to waste six hours because I couldn't speed up the file. Therefore with goldwave I was able to speed it up and am even now, as of five minutes ago, reading it at double speed. Also, it will play back a recording at double speed, although I am not sure you can record it onto a CD that way. I am used to the higher pitch with regular pauses of double speed, so that doesn't bother me. I have been reading that way for 40 years and prefer it. That's why I was looking for tutorials etc. I would pay for it as shareware to have in case of times like these. However, I would like to hear a tutorial to get to use it better. RE: FM transmitters
What's the most popular wireless headphone? What kind of distances are you getting out of the wireless headphones and the FM transmitters? Have you heard anything about Blue tooth headphones/keyboards and how their reliability and distances compare to what we are talking about here? Reed -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jerry Richer Sent: December 21, 2005 9:16 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: Re: FM transmitters Reed! Many of us use an FM transmitter and wireless keyboard to work with our computer remotely. The FM transmitter allows us to hear the audio, including software speech from the computer over a standard FM radio and the wireless keyboard allows us to enter commands. With this equipment we can sit on the deck or across the house from the main computer and operate it remotely. The C Crane transmitters are a good low cost option for the FM transmitter part. Instead of an FM transmitter some of us use wireless headphones which come with a transmitter that broadcasts on a dedicated frequency. The Gyration keyboard for $199.00 is a popular option for the keyboard part with reliable service up to 100 feet from the keyboards transmitter.. The FM transmitter or headphone transmitter plugs into where you would plug your computers speakers in and the keyboard plugs into a USB port. Chirp|Chirp|Chirp: It's the Bat, Chirping Bat .Com ! Much intrigued... What are these FM transmitters of which you speak? What are they a low cost alternative to? Subject: Re: FM transmitters I couldn't agree more. After you make the slight adjustment, they work great. Not only are they a good low cost alternative, they sound good. You can also use them with batteries, something which could prove helpful. I had one running constantly for about a year and didn't have a bit of trouble with it, accept when the power dropped, they shut off and have to be re-started manually. You can't go wrong with one and my 2 year old grand son could probably hook it up. Chuck - Original Message - From: "russell Bourgoin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. RE: Transferring Vinyl Records to CD Or harddrive
I have some old tapes and records that I want to put on to cd. So, I had the same questions a couple of weeks ago. What I did: Go to http://jfwlite.com/programs.html and download and install the GoldWave JAWS scripts. Go to http://www.goldwave.com/ and download and install the latest trial version of GoldWave. Read C:\Program Files\GoldWave\GoldWave.htm. Appendix D gives an example of copying records. I recently purchased a program called "Rip Vinyl" from out of England. The menu items seem to work okay, but as soon as I try to use it to select my source, say mike or line-in, the programs locks up my system and I can't get out of it, except my rebooting the machine entirely. I paid ten bucks for the program so I am not worried about it, but is there another such program out there that is accessible? I actually want to rip Casettes to my hard drive and then onto MP3 discs. I heard mention of a program called Audacity (free I hear). How accessible is this one? FW: GoldWave questions
I sent this out a while ago and didn't get a really meaningful answer. Can anyone help? Thanks. Reed _ From: Reed Poynter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: November 29, 2005 8:55 AM To: 'PC audio discussion list. ' Subject: GoldWave questions Hi Guys, I am using a trial version of GoldWave. The upper right status bar displays a command count (unlicensed usage), which gives you a rough idea of how much you use the program. How can I read this count? I have an opened file with cue points dropped. I see how to move from one cue point to the next with Control+J. Can I ask GoldWave to start playing at the current cue point after hitting Control+j? I do see how to start playing from a given cue point shown in the cue points dialog. The problem here is that the fast forward, rewind and pause (F5,F6 and F7) don't work for me in this dialog .
