simplest way to create playlist
Hi all, What method do you folks recommend for creating a playlist? The environment is Windows XP. The user has both Windows Media and Winamp, both of which have capabilities similar to or exactly like what is sought. However, I'm wondering if one of these is your preferred program to create a playlist? If so, how do you get started? If not, which program would you recommend for creating a playlist file. Windows Media Player not recognizing various cd's
Hi folks, I'm working with both Winamp and Windows Media Player, and though neither program is perfect, I'm finding that Winamp seems to Excel a bit when it comes to identifying compact discs inserted into the computer. Is this based upon the databases accessed by the two applications? Is there a way to enhance Windows Media to be more productive in this regard? I use WMP to rip discs, and would like it to automatically identify the artist/title being ripped. On perhaps a dozen occasions over the past week, Winamp correctly labels the album, but WMP cannot do so. I have WMP set to go on-line and retrieve additional details. Are there other settings I can tweak for closer to ideal results? Scott To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Simple program for copying cd's

understanding Dvd-r discs
Hi all, Forgive my ignorance on this topic, but I'm just now considering the purchase of dvd-r discs for some of my storage/personal needs. I realize however, that I know very little about the technology. Here are my questions: 1. Can dvd-r discs be used to store mp3 and other compresse media such as WMA? If so, is the process for burning, if that is the correct term, the same as burning a cd? For example, can I copy/paste or send items to the dvd drive on my pc, then perform a standard data burn via Windows Media? 2. Once I've gotten the mp3/WMA files onto the dvd-r disc, regardless of the method, can this disc then be played back in most dvd players, including video dvd players folks use in conjunction with their televisions? I realize there will be exceptions, but if there is a general rule/answer to this question, I would love to be enlightened. Also, if I have stored a large number of files, contained in multiple folders on this dvd, will a person using a video dvd player be able to view the names of those folders and their files? 3. Amazon is offering a spindle of 100 dvd-r discs made by TDK for $26. Does this seem a good bargain? Windows media player is a very accessible animal these days and is worth anyone taking another look. It's media library is completely accessible and easy to use unlike winamp which bounces from version to version breaking and fixing the library. It is easy to select which tracks you wish to rip using only your PC cursor and spacebar. No need here for use of the JAWS cursor or equivalent and no struggles trying to work out what is checked or not as is the case with Easy Cd extractor. All ripping functions are configurable and all functions are accessible using tab, spacebar, application key and options from the menu bar. In other words completely windows standard. In my opinion it's a better player than winamp. Just listen to a live album or concept album where the tracks merge to see how seemlessly media player will do this compared to winamp. We're all a little guilty of sticking with our favourite programs and probably not looking around enough for alternatives. Often, mass market all-in-one offerings that do a number of tasks, such as Windows Media player, may not do all of them well. Listening Online to Football/soccer
Hey guys, Anybody have suggestions on where to listen to the Copa America soccer games? I can find a ton of Spanish feeds, but thus far nothing that will be broadcast in English. Perhaps it's not, but I figured since this was the world wide web, The United States' lack of interest shouldn't be much of a factor. However, I'm striking out so far, if I may mix my metaphors. Any help would be appreciated. I'd love to listen to tonight's game. Hi Dean, I just want to make sure I understand what you've done, so I can try and duplicate it here. You turned off the virtual pc cursor and tabbed, or shift tabbed, through the media player web page view until you hear unnamed view as if you were in WMP, then you were able to adjust volume. When I attempted sign up a few months ago, I was unsuccessful for much the same reason. I ended up writing to tech support, and after some cajoling, they finally signed me up themselves. Re: Jaws and Pandora.com
Hi, I've been assisted by the Pandora tech support folks in getting registered with the site. If you don't ask, they may not offer to help, but if you inquire, they will ask you to email the important info to them. Once you have been registered, you should be able to both log in, and choose different songs/artists to listen to. The keystrokes for their media player don't seem to work, even with a screen reader turned off, but perhaps I'm missing another step which would enable the use of these keys. avi to wav problem
Hey all, Thanks to those of you who pointed me towards the avi to wav conversion program. It's working well, with one odd exception. The wav files that I create from my avi files can be played in windows media player, but apparently not in Winamp. When I open them in Winamp, they immediately stop, and I can't get them started. If I open wmp, the files play without a hitch. Do I need another codec in order to play these files? It doesn't make sense though, considering that these are simply wav files. Re: Windows Media Audio
I don't often limit myself to a me too message, but Kevin has made nothing but good points in his post. I too have found that, when talking to people who prefer flak, more often than not they tend to be anti-microsoft, rather than for flak for a good reason. Go WMA. Scott - Original Message - From: Kevin Lloyd [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, July 04, 2006 12:46 PM Subject: Re: Windows Media Audio Hi Bruce. The obvious advantages are: WMA is supported by many players and is probably the next most supported format to MP3 WMA supports ID3 tags and so is supported by many software music databases for managing music collections WMA can be burned directly to audio CD's because most burning software programs support direct conversion from WMA to CDDA - I'm not aware of any that will do this for Flak WMA sounds damn good - there has been some subjective discussion here on the comparison between MP3 and WMA, some of which seems very anti-Microsoft based tripe rather than objective considerations and evidence based. The fact is that MP3 is the oldest encoding technology around and lacks the recent development that's been put into more modern encoders such as WMA. It's true that DRM is a driver for music sites to adopt WMA but you can't sell crap quality music so it would not make sense for the industry to adopt a technology that wasn't going to provide the best quality for the best file size. I've personally done much testing over the past 5 to 6 years and have switched from MP3 to WMA based on the evidence of playback on my computer, on my portable player and on my Linn hi-fi. It was painful to rip my collection all over but I can tell you that the difference in quality is absolutely apparent and that pain has been rewarded. Regards. ripping with windows media player
Hey folks, I've been using wmp to rip my music collection onto an external drive, and for the most part I'm very happy with the process. However, on occasion I will rip a seemingly fine cd onto the drive, and when I listen to the ripped tracks, there will be a clicking or ticking sound of a sort, almost as if the disc might be skipping. This is perplexing when the disc, when originally played, went through its paces without a hitch. Any ideas on why this might be happening? Re: ripping with windows media player
Hey George, What I've been doing in that situation is shift tabbing in Windows Media until I reach the list of tracks. You can then use the spacebar the check the first track. Arrow down to the second track and press spacebar to check it. Repeat this process until all tracks are checked. Then find and activate the rip button. This should allow the cd to be ripped again. Re: nhl.com and their audio feeds?
My experiences with MLB have been equally disappointing. I would note that the NHL's hockey service, though impossible to navigate as it relates to archived games, has fairly good sound quality for its broadcasts. I too hope they begin to offer a paid service, and improve some of their shortcomings. But, after having gone through a year long lockout, and never having charged for their audio feeds in the past, I don't know how quickly we can expect this to happen. Unless I have been doing something wrong, I have to disagree with you as far as mlb.com is concerned. I've paid the money for the mlb.com audio for the last couple of years, and it, if anything, has gotten worse. I can remember hearing games on small transister radios on am in the 1960s 1970s that sounded better than mlb.com has sounded in the last couple of years. And what frustrates me is that I've heard some of the clips they run from mlbtv to entice you to buy it, they sound excelent. I have my system set up for the broadband site rather than narrow band because broadband is what I have. Maybe I'll try switching to the narrow band this year just to see if it helps. I know that's opposite from what it should be, but I'm not sure I want to continue paying for the audio I've been getting from mlb.com. Now, as far as nfl.com is concerned, I couldn't agree with you more. They are excellent!! they also carry playoff games. At least they have so far this year and they did all the way through the Superbowl the last couple of years. If you think mlb.com is so good, maybe there's some setting I have wrong, because the audio I get is almost not worth it. I think I'd rather get an a.m. radio station with its accompanying fade inouts and static than to listen to the junk I've been getting the last couple of years. Re: transferring music collection to hard drive
Kevin, Thanks for the very detailed and helpful message. I'm leaning in the direction of Windows Media, and the lossless format sounds like the ideal. I don't want to lose quality if I can help it, and you're right, memory, in the form of external hard drives, is quite reasonably priced right now. Thanks again, Scott - Original Message - From: Kevin Lloyd [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 3:09 PM Subject: Re: transferring music collection to hard drive Hi Scott. I'm using windows media player to archive my CD collection using WMA lossless as my choice of format. As it says, it's a lossless format and so quality is guaranteed. Therefore, if you want to burn to CD in the future and play on a real hi-fi system, you're going to get the full frequency range. This is where I've noticed the compression in MP3 files that otherwise sound great when played on a computer or portable device. There are other lossless formats but I think those have disadvantages. Flak and OG aren't really supported out there in mainstream players very often whereas WMA is and I don't think Microsoft are going to go away too quickly so the format will be around for a considerable number of years. WAV is uncompressed and so is larger than WMA files but even more of a disadvantage is that you don't have any ID3 tags in WAV files. A typical WMA lossless track of about 5 mins can be around the 30MB mark but memory is cheap. I convert my music down to 128kbps on the fly when loading up my portable MP3 hard drive player so there's no problems in taking at least some of my collection with me when I travel. You could though create MP3 files from the WMA files by using a program like Goldwave. Because you're converting from a lossless format, you are able to go ahead and create files in other formats from your WMA masters without losing quality due to mixing and matching of formats. You will of course get quality degradation by reducing the bit rates. So, just to be clear, I rip to WMA lossless and keep those files as my archive masters. I store them on an external hard drive and don't touch these again. If I want to shrink the music to take away from the computer, I use Goldwave to create new smaller MP3 files or use the morph function that comes with my notmad explorer software to shrink the music on the fly as I load my Creative jukebox. For those of you who have converted a large number of discs into audio files, what format did you choose and why? Should I shell out money for a more powerful program than the ones I've already mentioned? turning off ads in real player
Hi everyone, When I open Real Player, I always have to suffer through advertisements. Is there a box I can check somewhere in the program to avoid the ads? Or am I going to get these as long as I use the free player? ripping music with Windows Media
Hi all, The cd ripping feature of Windows Media Player is quite easy to use, but I have one question about the results. The program always creates a folder called unknown artist, containing tracks that aren't named corresponding to the songs. Is there an option in Windows Media to go online and check the cd database so that the artist, album, and tracks will be properly named. Also, can I control where the folder of ripped music is created? It seems to put the songs in an odd place, and I'd like to alter that. specific sonic record now question
Hi all, Ok, so I had a chance to delve into Sonic's Record Now program for burning and copying cd's. The one area where I am having difficulty making headway is how to rip songs from cd, turn them into mp3 or WMA files, and save them on the hard drive. Does this program support that feature? If so, what are some general steps to accomplish this? If it makes a difference, the screen reader in question will be Window Eyes. .avi to .wav question
I'm using the program avi to wav, and I just received an error message for the first time. I of course was attempting to change a file from the .avi format to a wav file. I received the error message when I selected the file in question. The error was: File is not indexed type of avi What does this mean? And how can I work around this error? sonic record now
Hi folks, I'm wondering what people's experiences are with Sonic Record now. I'm mostly interested in the accessibility of things like copying cd's, burning cd's, ripping tracks. I may be working with someone who has this program, (Sonic I mean), and I only have the vaguest sense of the program. creating audio files from other files
Hi all, What program or programs would I use to take a small piece of a large wav file and make a wav or mp3 file out of it? In other words, I have a wav file that runs for about thirty minutes, and there are several segments, each just a few seconds long, that I want to make into their own individual files. Is there a way to do this without forking out cash? If not, I am open to paying for a program, as I may do this quite often in the future. And of course, I'm looking for the ideal combination of functionality and accessibility with a screen reader. mlb's game day audio
Hi all, Over the past couple weeks and especially the past three days, I have been experiencing trouble using Major League Baseball's Gameday Audio. Here's what I've been doing to listen. I will go to the Gameday Audio page which I have saved as a favorite. There I will select the link for the radio station broadcasting my team. Then I have to log in, entering user name/password info. Once I've done that, a window pops up displaying the MLB media player. The problem I've been encountering is that the audio just simply won't begin. There are no errors. So, I tried to change my settings by going into the preferences section. Here I selected the second radio button which I believe chooses the MLB media player, then saved my changes. Still nothing. I returned to preferences and selected the first radio button, which I believe is Real Player. When I saved that change, the audio began ... for about five minutes, then a real player dialog comes up telling me about a time out of some kind ... network difficulties and all that jazz. This sequence of events has occurred numerous times for me over the past couple weeks, and the latter part of this week I have been unable to get anything going. Anybody have any ideas for me? Sure thing, it is: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/audio/gda/index.jsp This is the page containing the radio station links. Do you think that the address might be part of the issue? Re: power dvd
Peter, You are correct, it was inter video win dvd. I'm afraid I haven't found the program to be very accessible, using jaws. How do you generally access functions like navigating menus, switching tracks, accessing different features? compendium of streaming radio stations
Hi all, I'm searching for a list of radio stations that stream their music online. I'm hoping there might be one very complete website with links to these stations. I've already tried: www.radio-locator.com Everything on that page seems to be a broken link, at least when it comes to the links to the audio feeds. Any suggestions? Real Player question
Hi all, I just purchased my first downloadable album from Real Audio. The files are in .rax format. Can I burn these files to cd using Roxeo? Or do I have to use Real Audio? If I can only use Real, what steps do I need to take in order to burn the files to cd? I think I have to add songs to my library and maybe some other things, but I don't know the Real Audio player at all, I just hope it works well enough with Jaws to make this happen. converting text to audio
Hi everybody, I'm new to this topic, so I hope I ask the correct questions. Basically, what I am looking for is an accessible and effective way to convert text or MS Word files into mp3 or wav. I use Open Book currently, but I imagine there is something out there which would more adequately meet my needs. Any ideas? Re: converting text to audio
Thanks Daniel. Actually, I *am* using Openbook to do the conversions now, I'm just searching for a better alternative. Text Aloud has been suggested by one list member, and I intend to give it a try. Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, May 21, 2005 5:18 PM Subject: Re: converting text to audio Scott, So far as I'm aware, there *is* in the current version of Open Book (version 7x) the ability to do just this, though I haven't learned yet how to do it, myself. There is a mailing list specifically for Open Book Users, and if you write to me privately, I'll find the subscription information and give it to you.
