Hi Dan,

Is there a specific number to call in order to speak with Verizon regarding
Mobile Speak? Also, does anyone know if there are non-qwerty phones
supporting mobile speak on Verizon's network?

simplest way to create playlist

2009-11-25 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

What method do you folks recommend for creating a playlist? The environment is
Windows XP. The user has both Windows Media and Winamp, both of which have
capabilities similar to or exactly like what is sought. However, I'm wondering
if one of these is your preferred program to create a playlist? If so, how do
you get started? If not, which program would you recommend for creating a
playlist file. And is there any advantage or disadvantage to m3u versus pls?
The user has multiple screen readers installed, including JAWS and Window-Eyes.

Thanks all,
Scott

Windows Media Player not recognizing various cd's

2009-11-16 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I'm working with both Winamp and Windows Media Player, and though neither
program is perfect, I'm finding that Winamp seems to Excel a bit when it comes
to identifying compact discs inserted into the computer. Is this based upon the
databases accessed by the two applications? Is there a way to enhance Windows
Media to be more productive in this regard? I use WMP to rip discs, and would
like it to automatically identify the artist/title being ripped. On perhaps a
dozen occasions over the past week, Winamp correctly labels the album, but WMP
cannot do so. I have WMP set to go on-line and retrieve additional details. Are
there other settings I can tweak for closer to ideal results?

Some quick search engine work has not produced any clear method for adding
alternate databases to the WMP search. All of my settings in the program are
already adjusted so that the cd should be automatically identified. But
simply put, I can open Winamp and nearly every time receive the name of the
album, not so in WMP.

ripping and burning dvd's

2009-04-02 Thread Scott Blanks

Hi folks,

I am, for the first time, dipping my toe into the murky waters of copying a
dvd. I would basically like to take a dvd disc, back it up onto my computer,
and then copy that info onto another dvd disc. So basically I want to copy
disc to disc.

I have read conflicting information on how to accomplish this. Some say to
use dvd shrink, others recommend dvd decrypter, but I haven't been able to
successfully complete the process . I've used decrypter to get files onto my
computer, but couldn't proceed further.

My specs: windows xp, JAWS 9, and Roxeo is also on the system, if that
detail is important.

playing dvd's with windows media 11

2008-08-27 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

From all indications, Windows Media 11 should support the playback of dvd
media, both the old school variety and hd dvd's. However, I am unable to get
wmp to play back the audio ... video may be coming through but I have no sight
so ...

I've set up wmp to be the default player for dvd media, and I've also made this
the action the drive should perform when a dvd disc is inserted.

wmp does open, but no sound is forthcoming. I can locate the list view
indicating the correct name of the dvd disc, but I can get no further.

Help me end my long separation from dvd movies. I'm going through withdrawal!

Thanks in advance,
Scott

bluetooth headset microphone

2008-03-08 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

Wondering if the following scenario is feasible, and if so, which mics you
all might recommend.

I would like to be able to use a headset type mic, the sort which goes over
your head, and has a mic which curves around one side to point at your
mouth. However, I'd like it to be wireless or bluetooth, whichever would be
more effective. My intention with this set up is to be able to interact in
chat rooms, without having to be completely tethered to sitting at the pc.
It would seem that bluetooth is the stronger choice, but I will defer to
others with greater experience than myself.

Thanks,

Simple program for copying cd's

2008-01-24 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

I'm searching for a program which will allow me to put a cd into my
computer, copy the contents to the hard drive, then remove the original and
put in a blank disc to make a copy. The catch is, I need this process to be
as simple as possible. I'm seeking the simplicity for a client of mine.
Earlier versions of both Nero and Roxio offered a very straightforward
interface, but I'm being told that the more recent versions of these
programs have moved away from their accessible roots. Also, I realize that
Windows Media player would allow me to accomplish this task, but I would
have to break the process into two distinct parts, ripping, and burning.

Do I have other options? Where should I begin?

Thanks,

understanding Dvd-r discs

2007-11-24 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

Forgive my ignorance on this topic, but I'm just now considering the
purchase of dvd-r discs for some of my storage/personal needs. I realize
however, that I know very little about the technology. Here are my
questions:

1. Can dvd-r discs be used to store mp3 and other compresse media such as
WMA? If so, is the process for burning, if that is the correct term, the
same as burning a cd? For example, can I copy/paste or send items to the dvd
drive on my pc, then perform a standard data burn via Windows Media?
2. Once I've gotten the mp3/WMA files onto the dvd-r disc, regardless of the
method, can this disc then be played back in most dvd players, including
video dvd players folks use in conjunction with their televisions? I realize
there will be exceptions, but if there is a general rule/answer to this
question, I would love to be enlightened. Also, if I have stored a large
number of files, contained in multiple folders on this dvd, will a person
using a video dvd player be able to view the names of those folders and
their files?
3. Amazon is offering a spindle of 100 dvd-r discs made by TDK for $26. Does
this seem a good bargain?

Thanks all,
Scott

66% = 256kbps

I'm using JAWS, and what I'm having to do in order to read the bit rate is
turn on the JAWS cursor and navigate to a line underneath the slider where
the size and bit rate info is displayed. Also, I'm using wmp 10, so not sure
if the above stats are the same for the newest version of the player.

another question about nhl radio online

2007-10-06 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi again,

Are any of you other nhl hockey fans out there having trouble accessing the
audio streams online? I used to be able to use the radio page on the nhl.com
site:

http://www.nhl.com/radio/index.html

However, over the past two days, whenever I access the above link, the page
indicates that there are no games available for listening. On both Friday
and Saturday, there have been a number of games. On Friday, I was able to
access one team website, that of the Anaheim Ducks, to hear there match, but
today I am unable to hear any games either through the nhl radio page or any
of the team sites.

If anyone's got some insight into this problem, I'd love to hear it, since I
can't hear anything else right now.

 Hi Kelly.

Windows media player is a very accessible animal these days and is worth

anyone taking another look. It's media library is completely accessible
 and
easy to use unlike winamp which bounces from version to version breaking
 and
fixing the library. It is easy to select which tracks you wish to rip
 using
only your PC cursor and spacebar. No need here for use of the JAWS
 cursor
or equivalent and no struggles trying to work out what is checked or not
 as
is the case with Easy Cd extractor.

All ripping functions are configurable and all functions are accessible
using tab, spacebar, application key and options from the menu bar. In
 other words completely windows standard.

In my opinion it's a better player than winamp. Just listen to a live
 album
or concept album where the tracks merge to see how seemlessly media
 player
will do this compared to winamp.

We're all a little guilty of sticking with our favourite programs and
probably not looking around enough for alternatives. Winamp has been
 used
for years by blind users and windows media player was once not very
accessible at all. Times have changed.

 Regards.

One of the benefits of using a stand alone CD ripper such as CDEX or
 Exact
Audio Copy is that these programs are highly configurable. Both
 programs
allow you take the CDDB information about the disc and have it
 displayed
 in
many different ways, depending upon user preferences. Often, mass
 market
all-in-one offerings that do a number of tasks, such as Windows Media
player, may not do all of them well. Win Media can play audio files,
 rip
CD's, and burn CD's and do it less accessibly with fewer options than
 Winamp, EAC and Nero.

So how do I get the track titles to either appear as the file name or
 as
the Title field in an MP3 file I'm ripping from an audio CD?
I can use MS Media Player 10, or Audition 1.5.
Currently, I get only track and the number, with nothing in the
 information fields.

Listening Online to Football/soccer

2007-06-28 Thread Scott Blanks
Hey guys,

Anybody have suggestions on where to listen to the Copa America soccer
games? I can find a ton of Spanish feeds, but thus far nothing that will be
broadcast in English. Perhaps it's not, but I figured since this was the
world wide web, The United States' lack of interest shouldn't be much of a
factor. However, I'm striking out so far, if I may mix my metaphors.

Any help would be appreciated. I'd love to listen to tonight's game.

Hi Dean,

I just want to make sure I understand what you've done, so I can try and
duplicate it here. You turned off the virtual pc cursor and tabbed, or shift
tabbed, through the media player web page view until you hear unnamed view
as if you were in WMP, then you were able to adjust volume. Is that all
accurate?

When I attempted sign up a few months ago, I was unsuccessful for much the
same reason. I ended up writing to tech support, and after some cajoling,
they finally signed me up themselves. Once that was accomplished, I was able

i just heard about it and sure could use some help in filling out the site

i managed to find the edit box to initially type in the music artist or
 song
that started the five or six song sample player but then the sign up
 screen
came up and the music stopped and the fields are very difficult to fill in
and there are continue or next buttons that do not indicate button at all
but just say next or continue as in words but with no visible attribute
elements for jfw to tell what things are clickable and what things are
 simply static text.

in fact the edit boxes for name address and even the initial edit box for
where one types in their favorite song or artist, do not read when using
 the
left and right arrows to navigate the text inside of their edit boxes on
 pandora dot com.

the edit boxes do not seem to be able to be reviewed using the virtual pc
 cursor
any help with navigating the site after sign up is completed would also be
helpful, as in how to choose more stations or how to make any necessary
configuration changes would be most helpful

 running jfw 7.0 and i e six.

Re: Jaws and Pandora.com

2006-08-26 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi,

I've been assisted by the Pandora tech support folks in getting registered
with the site. If you don't ask, they may not offer to help, but if you
inquire, they will ask you to email the important info to them. Once you
have been registered, you should be able to both log in, and choose
different songs/artists to listen to. The keystrokes for their media player
don't seem to work, even with a screen reader turned off, but perhaps I'm
missing another step which would enable the use of these keys.

Good luck,

give cause for cautious optimism, that the system is usable once you
 register.

RUNTIME ERROR IN REAL PLAYER

2006-08-19 Thread Scott Blanks
Hey all,

I'm subscribed to the National Football League Field Pass, which allows you
to hear all NFL games. Whenever I attempt to begin playing a stream using
Real Player, I receive the following message.

A Runtime Error has occurred.
Do you wish to Debug?

The error happens whenever any broadcast stream begins. About half the time,
the stream will time out soon after, forcing me to restart the stream. Any
ideas on what might be causing this? Is there anything I can do, or should I
contact the NFL tech support folks?

avi to wav problem

2006-07-04 Thread Scott Blanks
Hey all,

Thanks to those of you who pointed me towards the avi to wav conversion
program. It's working well, with one odd exception. The wav files that I
create from my avi files can be played in windows media player, but
apparently not in Winamp. When I open them in Winamp, they immediately stop,
and I can't get them started. If I open wmp, the files play without a hitch.
Do I need another codec in order to play these files? It doesn't make sense
though, considering that these are simply wav files. Anyhow, if you've got
any ideas, I'm open to any and all.

I don't often limit myself to a me too message, but Kevin has made nothing

Hi Bruce.

The obvious advantages are:
WMA is supported by many players and is probably the next most supported
format to MP3
WMA supports ID3 tags and so is supported by many software music databases
for managing music collections
WMA can be burned directly to audio CD's because most burning software
programs support direct conversion from WMA to CDDA - I'm not aware of any
that will do this for Flak
WMA sounds damn good - there has been some subjective discussion here on the
comparison between MP3 and WMA, some of which seems very anti-Microsoft
based tripe rather than objective considerations and evidence based. The
fact is that MP3 is the oldest encoding technology around and lacks the
recent development that's been put into more modern encoders such as WMA.
It's true that DRM is a driver for music sites to adopt WMA but you can't
sell crap quality music so it would not make sense for the industry to adopt
a technology that wasn't going to provide the best quality for the best file
size. I've personally done much testing over the past 5 to 6 years and have
switched from MP3 to WMA based on the evidence of playback on my computer,
on my portable player and on my Linn hi-fi. It was painful to rip my
collection all over but I can tell you that the difference in quality is
absolutely apparent and that pain has been rewarded.

Regards.

Re: GET GOING WITH GOOGLE

2006-04-03 Thread Scott Blanks
After clicking on the first paypal button, do the following:
1. Move to the top of the page by pressing control + home.
2. Arrow slowly down the page, listening to the information spoken.
3. You will come to a table. This table contains the payee information for
people who will be paying with paypal.
4. As you continue to arrow down, after several lines, the table will end.
Your screen will speak this fact.
5. The very next line will say if you do not have a paypal account. Press
the down arrow key and you will hear, click here button.
6. Press enter on this button. You will then be presented with a web form
wherein you can use a credit card to pay for the tutorial.

 cards has no buttons.

 HI Sarah

thanks. But, what then! Have you managed to make it work?

I am using JAWS and I can see a table with no links or buttons. Below
that it asks for my e-mail address and a Paypal password.

If there is someone out there who has bought this tutorial with a credit
card, I would be very interested to know how they did it.

Re: GET GOING WITH GOOGLE

2006-04-02 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi there,

I think you are headed in the right direction, but it sounds as if you might
not have ventured all the way down the page. There is a section below the
paypal payee info which says:
If you do not currently have a PayPal account,

This section comes immediately after the paypal payee table ends, and before
the paypal log in table begins. If you are using Jaws or Window Eyes, your
screen reader will say table end as you arrow down. The very next line will
be the text I quoted above. Press enter on the button and the web form will
appear for entering credit card info.

So, in short, arrow down the page, and don't stop when you hear Pay to: Out
of Sight Ltd., etc. Keep going folks.

converting mp3 from one bitrate to another

2006-03-21 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

Forgive my ignorance about these things, but I am still new to the audio
side of things. I've begun ripping my cd's to 320kbps mp3. Now, I want to be
able to make smaller mp3's from these files, say 192kbps mp3's. I have
winamp pro, Windows Media Player, and real player 10 on my system. Will any
of these programs allow for the conversion? If not, is there a free program
for changing bitrate? And again, if there isn't a free alternative, what is
the best and of course, most accessible program.

Thanks,
Scott

I know doing some of this can cause artifacts in the audio quality so a

Re: ripping with windows media player

2006-03-14 Thread Scott Blanks
No, these discs aren't copy protected. Also, I believe if there was some
sort of copy protection in place, it wouldn't allow any ripping to occur. I
can rip, some tracks just come out a little dirty, with some crackling or
ticking.

ripping with windows media player

2006-03-12 Thread Scott Blanks
Hey folks,

I've been using wmp to rip my music collection onto an external drive, and
for the most part I'm very happy with the process. However, on occasion I
will rip a seemingly fine cd onto the drive, and when I listen to the ripped
tracks, there will be a clicking or ticking sound of a sort, almost as if
the disc might be skipping. This is perplexing when the disc, when
originally played, went through its paces without a hitch. Any ideas on why
this might be happening?

Hey George,

What I've been doing in that situation is shift tabbing in Windows Media
until I reach the list of tracks. You can then use the spacebar the check
the first track. Arrow down to the second track and press spacebar to check
it. Repeat this process until all tracks are checked. Then find and activate
the rip button. This should allow the cd to be ripped again.

Re: nhl.com and their audio feeds?

2006-01-22 Thread Scott Blanks
My experiences with MLB have been equally disappointing. I would note that
the NHL's hockey service, though impossible to navigate as it relates to
archived games, has fairly good sound quality for its broadcasts. I too hope
they begin to offer a paid service, and improve some of their shortcomings.
But, after having gone through a year long lockout, and never having charged
for their audio feeds in the past, I don't know how quickly we can expect
this to happen.

Unless I have been doing something wrong, I have to disagree with you as
 far
as mlb.com is concerned. I've paid the money for the mlb.com audio for
 the
last couple of years, and it, if anything, has gotten worse. I can
 remember
hearing games on small transister radios on am in the 1960s 1970s that
sounded better than mlb.com has sounded in the last couple of years. And
what frustrates me is that I've heard some of the clips they run from
 mlbtv
to entice you to buy it, they sound excelent. I have my system set up
 for
the broadband site rather than narrow band because broadband is what I
 have.
Maybe I'll try switching to the narrow band this year just to see if it
helps. I know that's opposite from what it should be, but I'm not sure I
want to continue paying for the audio I've been getting from mlb.com.
 Now,
as far as nfl.com is concerned, I couldn't agree with you more. They are
excellent!! they also carry playoff games. At least they have so far
 this
year and they did all the way through the Superbowl the last couple of
years. If you think mlb.com is so good, maybe there's some setting I have
wrong, because the audio I get is almost not worth it. I think I'd rather
get an a.m. radio station with its accompanying fade inouts and static
 than
to listen to the junk I've been getting the last couple of years. Any
 ideas
 on what I'm doing wrong?

not for nhl.com you don't. i wish in some ways they'd look at that.
 nfl.com
and mlb.com both became a million times better once the paid

were introduced. nhl.com is light years behind those too so far as online
 listening goes now.

Re: nhl.com and their audio feeds?

2006-01-19 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi Kevin,

I am a faithful listener of the NHL games online, but I also share the lack
of success in navigating archived games. I can't seem to even use the jaws
cursor to click on the graphic, so I'm somewhat out of ideas. There also
doesn't seem to be an option to switch from the imbedded player to another
player such as Winamp or Windows Media.

Good luck, and let us know if you find any success,
Scott

Re: Ear buds - anyone got suggestions?

www.bestbuy.com
has a couple good options. Here are the model numbers and prices:

Sony Fontopia Lightweight Ear-Bud Headphones with 9mm Drivers MDR-EX51LP
$38.99

Sony Fontopia Ear-Bud Headphones MDREX71SL/
$43.99

When you go to the website, do a search for sony headphones, not earbuds,
because that will bring up different results.

Good luck,

So, anyone got any suggestions on a good sounding pair of ear buds? I want

determining UPC code on a cd

2005-11-14 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I believe just about every music cd that is released has an associated code,
which I think is called the UPC. What I'm wondering is if there is a way
using a program such as Winamp or Windows Media player to determine this
code, simply by inserting a cd into the computer. I know for example, that
both of those programs give you tons of info about a disc if it is in your
computer's cd drive, but the one piece of info I can't seem to find is that
UPC code. If the programs I've mentioned aren't feasible, is there an
alternative?

Thank you,
Scott

archos mp3 player

2005-10-23 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I've been searching the internet for info about accessible mp3 players. I've
heard a very small bit about, and I don't even know if this is the right
name, the Archos jukebox. Is this an mp3 player? If so, is it accessible for

players? I'm hoping, as most are of course, for something with more than
just a gig of memory.

Also, if this isn't quite the right place to discuss this topic, can someone
direct me to an email discussion group more appropriate for my question?

trouble with playing streaming audio

2005-10-05 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi all,

I'm trying to listen to the National Hockey League online, which provides
all games for free from the nhl website. However, when I go to the page
displaying the games, and I choose a game which is supposed to be playing, a
page comes up showing that the play state is stopped. When I arrow down to
the play link and press enter, nothing seems to happen ... the page doesn't
even reload. If someone could check out the following link and see if they
are having the same trouble, I'd appreciate it. I have windows media on my
system, which I believe is the player of preference for these streams. I
have also tried to paste the shortcut into winamp without success.

Anyhow, the link is:

flak or WMA lossless

2005-09-26 Thread Scott Blanks
Hi folks,

I asked recently about archiving a music collection and received numerous
good suggestions. I've now got the external hard drive so I can begin the
process. But now I've got another dilemma of sorts. I plan to archive to a
lossless format, but I'm not sure which one to choose. I've heard many
people tout the WMA lossless format, but I've also heard recommendations for
flak. WMA is easy, but if I go with flak, what programs do a good efficient
job of ripping songs from cd into flak format? And, if I decide to go with
flak, will it be easy to make cd's from the flak format? What programs will
allow me to burn cd's from flak format?

Thanks everyone,
Scott

Re: transferring music collection to hard drive

2005-09-18 Thread Scott Blanks
Kevin,

Thanks for the very detailed and helpful message. I'm leaning in the
direction of Windows Media, and the lossless format sounds like the ideal. I
don't want to lose quality if I can help it, and you're right, memory, in
the form of external hard drives, is quite reasonably priced right now.

Thanks again,
Scott

 Hi Scott.

I'm using windows media player to archive my CD collection using WMA
lossless as my choice of format.

As it says, it's a lossless format and so quality is guaranteed.
 Therefore,
if you want to burn to CD in the future and play on a real hi-fi system,
you're going to get the full frequency range. This is where I've noticed
the compression in MP3 files that otherwise sound great when played on a
 computer or portable device.

There are other lossless formats but I think those have disadvantages.
 Flak
and OG aren't really supported out there in mainstream players very often
whereas WMA is and I don't think Microsoft are going to go away too
 quickly
so the format will be around for a considerable number of years. WAV is
uncompressed and so is larger than WMA files but even more of a
 disadvantage
is that you don't have any ID3 tags in WAV files.

A typical WMA lossless track of about 5 mins can be around the 30MB mark
 but
 memory is cheap.

I convert my music down to 128kbps on the fly when loading up my portable
MP3 hard drive player so there's no problems in taking at least some of my
collection with me when I travel. You could though create MP3 files from
the WMA files by using a program like Goldwave. Because you're converting
from a lossless format, you are able to go ahead and create files in other
formats from your WMA masters without losing quality due to mixing and
matching of formats. You will of course get quality degradation by
 reducing
 the bit rates.

So, just to be clear, I rip to WMA lossless and keep those files as my
archive masters. I store them on an external hard drive and don't touch
these again. If I want to shrink the music to take away from the
 computer,
I use Goldwave to create new smaller MP3 files or use the morph function
that comes with my notmad explorer software to shrink the music on the fly
as I load my Creative jukebox.

 Regards.

 Kevin

like to accomplish is converting the tracks into a high quality file that
does not take up too much space.

For those of you who have converted a large number of discs into audio
files, what format did you choose and why? Should I shell out money for a
more powerful program than the ones I've already mentioned?

 Very curious,

mlb's game day audio

2005-07-22 Thread Scott Blanks

Hi all,

Over the past couple weeks and especially the past three days, I have been
experiencing trouble using Major League Baseball's Gameday Audio.

Here's what I've been doing to listen. I will go to the Gameday Audio page
which I have saved as a favorite. There I will select the link for the radio
station broadcasting my team. Then I have to log in, entering user
name/password info. Once I've done that, a window pops up displaying the MLB
media player. The problem I've been encountering is that the audio just
simply won't begin. There are no errors. So, I tried to change my settings
by going into the preferences section. Here I selected the second radio
button which I believe chooses the MLB media player, then saved my changes.
Still nothing. I returned to preferences and selected the first radio
button, which I believe is Real Player. When I saved that change, the audio
began ... for about five minutes, then a real player dialog comes up telling
me about a time out of some kind ... network difficulties and all that jazz.

This sequence of events has occurred numerous times for me over the past
couple weeks, and the latter part of this week I have been unable to get
anything going.

Anybody have any ideas for me?

Scott,
So far as I'm aware, there *is* in the current version of Open Book
(version
7x) the ability to do just this, though I haven't learned yet how to do
it,

myself. There is a mailing list specifically for Open Book Users, and if
you write to me privately, I'll find the subscription information and give
it to you.

Subject: converting text to audio

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this topic, so I hope I ask the correct questions.

Basically, what I am looking for is an accessible and effective way to
convert text or MS Word files into mp3 or wav. I use Open Book currently,
but I imagine there is something out there which would more adequately
meet

my needs.

Any ideas?
Scott
