sound cards for the PC
What sounds cards have you guys found to be the best in terms of giving high quality sound output?
RE: Using two sound cards
Hi. I have a Startech USB sound card that I'm using with my laptop, and it works great. I had to reformat the PC, and the card worked using the drivers for Windows 7, nothing extra to install. The cost of the card was quite reasonable, something like $25. I don't know about other sound cards. Hope this is helpful. Can I use an external USB sound card on my laptop? If yes, can you recommend a few that do work and possibly require only the driver to be installed unless one of these USB cards software is useable please let me know. Thank you. Re: Feedback Needed Concerning Sound Cards
Hello Christopher and list: Looking at desk tops for now. Thanks for the feedback and info! I can remember (before I bought this machine) to try and stay away from Dell as whatever they did, their proprietary sound cards (for whatever reason) would not yield enough volume in some chatrooms! That was why I got an Audigy 2 on this one; it works pretty good, although I found that the mic jack in the front on the tower had very low volume! Butt then when I plugged the mic in the back, it was better! Re: Sound Cards
I don't know about jaws, but I have for some time successfully run a 2 soundcard system, using the standard built in one for window-eyes, and an alesis IO2 USB box for other audio stuff, and have never had any problems. I will say however, that this is under win-xp, and I am not sure if the IO2 is properly supported under win7 64bit, as alesis seem to have been super slack with there driver support, according to some research I did when looking in to this, so when I upgrade the OS on that machine, if this is the case, I may well change the IO2 for the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB box, which seems to be a good device, and is fully win7 64bit supported. hope this helps. Re: two questions about sound cards.
I share Hammit’s thoughts here. About five years ago I bought the Audiophile 24/96 PCI card, which is produced by M-Audio. I herd so many good things on this list about high quality sound cards. I wasn’t disappointed. It was a thousand percent improvement in quality from the built in computer sound card. The stereo soundstage was much wider and there was much greater depth of sound, particularly at the low end. The spoken word recordings I fed into the card from analog sources were of broadcast quality with complements from the production team. The 24-bit depth with the higher sampling rate on the card enables seamless edits without the choppy effect herd with so much audio these days. In my latest recording, I edited a politician in mid-sentence so it sounds like he began his presentation at the beginning of my edit. I edited out the non-newsworthy thanking and acknowledgement of numerous aldermen. People do funny things when they see a high quality broadcast microphone, cables, and headphones monitoring a field recorder. I don’t regret one minute spending the extra money for this. As a blind person, my world is audio and a much-improved audio experience has greatly improved the quality of my computer life. Kelly On 10/1/11, Hamit Campos wrote: > Yeah, I guess. RE: two questions about sound cards.
I know, I kind of thought the same thing. What $650? Are they insaine? But then I went on to read that the Mike Preamps are thoughs of the 744-T recorder which is $4000. So, I imagin that everything else sounds just as good. Like I said, go to www.blindcooltech.com and listen to Neal Ewers's Pod cast on the Zoom H4N recorder. Fast forward to the part where he's trying ourt the Rode NT1-A microphone. He first tries it out on the Zoom, and then he uses the 744-T. You'll hear what this card sounds like at that point. If what Sound Devices says is right which I should think it is, because like I said before, the Preamps are the same ones as the ones in that recorder. Trust me, if I had the $650 on me at this moment, I'ed be calling Sweet Water and buying one. Pluss, it's totally accessible. It's just plug in and play. No software needed. Only the ASIO driver if you want to use it at it's full 192 KHZ 24 Bit quality. That's it. Every thing else has switches on the back. You can even use it stand alone to use it on something like an Ipad Itouch, or an Iphone. How do you like that one? -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave Bahr Sent: Saturday, October 01, 2011 1:44 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: two questions about sound cards. yeah that's the one I have, I did a conversion project of about 200 records over the summer for an audio archive and that card, the sb x-fi 5.1 pro external usb card, worked fantastically. You're welcome, It really is cool. Go to Blind cool tech.com and listen to Neal Ewer's pod cast of the Sound Devices 744-T recorder in the 2005 aercives, or listen to his Zoom H4N podcast at the part where he tries the Rode NT1-A mike. It's the second recorder he uses. This wil show you what it sounds like for the Preamps are the same ones as the ones on that $4000 recorder. That's why I said that it's well worth it. I mean think about it, you're only paying $650, but getting $4000 quality. RE: two questions about sound cards.
This one's pretty cool too from what I've heard. I've never used one, I don't have one, but from what I've read on Dell's page on them since they cell them, it sounds pretty cool for a consumer card. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Byron Stephens Sent: Saturday, October 01, 2011 11:31 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: two questions about sound cards. Re: two questions about sound cards.
yeah that's the one I have, I did a conversion project of about 200 records over the summer for an audio archive and that card, the sb x-fi 5.1 pro external usb card, worked fantastically. I'm curious about this other 650 dollar card though, really? 650 dollars? That seems rather outlandish, unless it comes with its own rack setup or soemthing. Hi. I use Station Playlist on a laptop with no problem. It works fine. As for a USB sound card, I'm happy with the Startech card I got from my local computer store. If I remember correctly it cost me only $25. It sounds quite good to me over my Bose Acoustic Wave. Have a good day. The Devil Sound device is simply playback, has a usb connector on one end and two rya jacks on the other end. Just to correct someone who commented earlier it is $350, says so right on the devilsound.com site. Not sure about the others mentioned some of which I'm sure have recording capabilities as well. Yep, it sounds like a pretty interesting card, I've looked at it at www.sweetwater.com they cell it. I shaired it on my face book page. They say the pre-amps are almost silent. Wether that's ccompletely true or not, I know not since I've never heard it. My favorite but it's $650 is the Sound-Devices USB pre2 card. They say this one sounds like their 744-T recorder. Okay, model of HP computer is DV6-2119tx which is fairly old - that is to say its about 8 months old the model but still selling - and I've found the card slot specs too if this is any help. slots: pc card (expresscard 54/34) integrated card reader (sd/mmc/ms/mspro/xd). What HP notebook computer do you have? I don't think I've seen a card slot in a notebook computer in years. They used to have PCMCIA slots, which I think were rebranded to PC Card slots at some point, but usually I think you just see card readers and USB ports on notebook computers now a days. PCI Express slots are usually available in PC towers, but unless there's some mini version of PCI Express, I cn't imagine you'd have access to anything like that in a notebook. Just out of curiosity unplug the USB speakers and check to see what the default card is. then plug them back in and check again. Unfortunately they adjust the volume of the internal card rather than the USB speakers. I could probably solve this problem by making the speakers rather than the internal card the default sound card, but that would also cause sounds which by default I want to come through the internal card to come through the speakers. I have a lead from the internal card to my hi-fi system which I use for listening to music etc. I use the USB speakers for JAWS. I can adjust the JAWS volume by going into volume settings in Windows, but it would be nice if I could also use the buttons on the speakers. I am aware that if I made the speakers the default sound card, I could force programs such as Winamp to use the internal card, but I would need to do that for every media player and I didn't really want to have to go down that track since some players don't provide that option anyway. Stereo mic: was RE: USB Sound Cards
Hi. I suspect the imic's mic input is mono. Most sound cards mic input is mono. I purchased a USB sound card for my new Windows 7 laptop, and it has two mic jacks on it. The tech who installed the software on it for me said one of the jacks was for a stereo mic, but I'm not sure if that's true, because while setting up my PC for internet broadcasting I plugged the mic into each jack, and it came out of a different speaker depending on which jack was used. The mic I used wasn't stereo, though. I don't know the brand name of the sound card, but it wasn't that expensive, only costing around $50. I've been able to set it up to work pretty well, but I haven't figured out how to mute the line in on it. This isn't a big deal, since I can just unplug my XM PCR from it, but I would like to figure out how to get this to work. Hope this helps. GO REDS! Hello paul! Well, it can be accessible by scripting the soft ware, but, for the purpesous of using it as a regular music player I don't think you don't have to touch the software, just let it be as it is. when I'm using sound forge or sonar etc, I can go in to the asio pannel and adjust some parameters from it's panel without any problems, but the actual EMU control pannel isn't so accessible, so I just let it be as it is. I am using winamp with this card without any problem at all. Regards, Jörgen Hansson! Re: M-audio sound cards
Frank: First of all, the cards themselves should work on any computer but accessible access to the Delta control panel can only be had using Windows XP SP2 or earlier. You can find my Scripts for JAWS on my server which works well with the Delta control Panel if, as I say, your XP box is not SP3. Incidentally, I may have a Delta 1010 LT card for sale very soon if you, or anyone else is interested. Use of two sound cards on a Windows 7 computer with JAWS
Hello: Our client has recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. He has both an internal and external sound card for this computer which he uses for his Karaoke and D.J. work. He currently has JAWS set to use the sound card chip on the mother board. When he boots up and comes to the welcome screen, JAWS speaks and he enters the password and presses enter, but then the computer hangs. When he tries this without JAWS, everything is fine. Any ideas? Oh, by the way, he's using the latest version of JAWS. Thanks. Michael Barber To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
RE: External sound cards
Hi folks A question for you folks who know much more about USB soundcards than I do. In about 2003 I think I bought an Emagic emi 2/6 soundcard to use on a laptop. This was shortly before Emagic was taken over by Apple and all windows development for Emagic products was sumarily halted. Luckily bef ore this drivers for this soundcard was optimised for Windows XP. The thing cost me about $1000 at that time! My question is whether hardware has changed much during the last 7 years and whether this may still be considered a professional soundcard or not? Just curious. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Colin r. Greetings, Matthew Bullis wrote: I quite like the IMic from Griffin Technology. For a while it wasn't available on their site, but I see that it's back for addition to their shopping cart at $30. It doesn't do the what you hear or stereo mix feature though, but if your laptop doesn't have a line in port, it's quite handy. You wouldn't think a small piece of plastic would work so well. Matthew, from this, do I take it for an XP home system there are no drivers? Please can you send me the site address? Thanks. >From Colin Howard who lives near Southampton in Southern England. In previous versions of JAWS and on XP Home computers, I have been able to put JAWS through the on-board sound card and speakers, whilst sending all other audio out to an external Soundblaster sound card. This was achieved by inserting a line of text in the JFW.ini file. I attempted to duplicate this method in JAWS 11 but unfortunately, it did not work. Anyone had a go at doing this yet? Very much welcome your advice if you know how to do this. Very best wishes. Andy.
