Bill -
Does your location accept files submitted via the Wal-Mart web
site? If so, is this a growing or significant percentage of your
printing?
We get stuff from the internet, but our lab is not online. Wait times
for prints are sometimes significant.

There are three places here in town, that offer this service with
next day (or even one-hour) pickup. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and a
local family owned camera shop called Rockbrook Camera. Wal-Mart
and Rockbrook are about a quarter a print; Sam's is an unbelievable
eighteen cents. I can't make 4x6's that cheap.
We are a quarter a print, which is somewhat less in your money.
I don't know if it's a big part of their business, but I think it's
a great service. I can't help but think it will be a growing part
of the business.
I think we may be having some issues with putting labs online, as it
is happening rather slowly.

Last weekend I showed my mother, who just got her first digital
camera at 76 years old, how to use the service. She had
transferred about a dozen photos, taken Christmas day, to her
computer. She ordered single prints of four images and five copies
of a fifth image. The total order was 9 prints coming to a bit
over $2.00 (US)

Had she used her 35mm point and shoot or, more typically for her, a
single use camera she would have ordered double prints of the full
roll of 24 shots. She probably would have paid about $6 to $10 for
that. Add another $7 to $10 if she would have ordered a set of
files on a CD.

I'm not sure which order is more profitable for the seller. Where
does the photo center make it's money these days? Is it sheer
volume?
Volume is good.
When prices are very low, volume is needed. Those digital photo labs
aren't cheap.

Something that many people don't think about, and that is that the screw-in
hoods, like the one discussed here, work better with pol filters. The
hood, which is mounted on the filter, can be readily turned with the front

Re: I'm Back with a "new to me" K1000 !!!

2004-12-31 Thread Graywolf
Written as a joke, but actually a pretty accurate description of it.
It is a version of WORM (Write Once Read Many) optical memory. While it seems
obsolete marketingwise, it is still a very functional system. BTW, most of those
cartridges have room for more frames of memory (40 - 72), but people did not
seem to want to pay for that many frames at a time. An advantage of WORM memory
is that it provides archival copies of the images without extra effort on the
part of the user.

If digital had RW systems had came first FILM would probably would probably be
applauded as a wonderful breakthrough in imaging. But as it came first it is
dismissed as OLD. (Anyone know what that acronym means? It has been around so
long I have forgotten.)

Good stuff!
You will find that on the right side of the camera is a

Lifting the LEFT hand crank after winding all of the

These modules are typically found to contain either

No offense taken, Frank. I wouldn't eliminate all the background. Just enough
to recrop after straightening out the verticals and perhaps a wee bit more to
better balance the frame. I guess one could say there is some advantage in
suggesting that the photo was taken quickly without having had time to
determine a horizon. But I still feel it would communicate better if the viewer
wasn't left to ponder the crooked horizon. However, I realize that an unplanned
and informal look is frequenlty seen as a plus. I often find it an affectation.
Here, I suspect it was an accident.
Happy New Year,

Banff and Lake Louise

2004-12-31 Thread Herb Chong
i was in the Canadian Rockies for a single day to photograph two weeks ago.
managed to get there after a week of chinook conditions, so there's much
less snow than there ought to be for this time of the year.

http://users.bestweb.net/~hchong/Seasonal/

the raven and bighorn sheep were shot with the FA 80-320/4.5-5.6 (which
appears to be discontinued) while the rest were all shot with the DA 14/2.8.
i've decided that i really don't like the bokeh on the 80-320.

overall, i have mixed feelings about the DA 14/2.8. on the one hand, it's
not got any noticeable vignetting, good flare resistance, and decent bokeh.
on the other hand, it's not as sharp as the DA 16-45/4. most of these images
were shot at f11 or f13 and should be at the maximum sharpness and
resolution of the lens. the difference isn't large, but it is noticeable.
i'll continue to use it as it's not that bad, but i was hoping for
performance exceeding that of the DA 16-45/4 given the relative price.

best guess right now is that Pentax has 3% worldwide market share of digital
cameras. those manufacturers who don't have a DSLR by now won't be viable
digital camera makers in a couple of years. the overall profit margins for
digital camera divisions are widely believed to be under 5% for almost
everyone. the only exception is Canon at around 20%. the difference is the
DSLR sales and their much higher margins than the P&S digitals. digital
medium format has an extra year. anyone who doesn't have a dedicated
homegrown digital medium format solution by the end of 2005 won't be in that
business anymore. for much the same reasons, i believe that Leica as a brand
will remain but Leica as a German camera maker is about to end. it's most
likely to become a Matsushita Electric Company (aka Panasonic) brand name.

Either prices are very different in your part of the world, or you've
made a mistake in calculating your costs. Around here a 50-pack of CDs
from reputable manufacturers (which is almost enough to store everything
on that 40GB drive) costs somewhere in the region of $15 - $20. If you
burn two copies of everything, just to be cautious, that still only works
out to a little over $1 per GB of storage.

Backup on DVDs is now (at last!) even cheaper than CD. DVD media cost
about twice as much as CD media, but hold around seven times as much.
That get's the price down to maybe $5 to backup your 40GB drive.

As for durability; it's too early to tell, at present. But in seven
years of scanning my own images (and four years before that burning
CDs at work to backup my own personal data) I've never yet ended up
with a CD that passed verification at the time of creation, but which
later proved to be unreadable.

Hanimex wasn't a real brand; it was a badge-engineered name put

If you can't find out who was the original manufacturer, I think

Re: screw mount huh?

2004-12-31 Thread Andre Langevin
If I recall correctly:
M42 50/1.4 = K 50/1.4
M42 SMC and Super-Multi-Coated lenses had SMC on the external
surfaces of the groups of elements. K mount lenses had SMC coating
on all elements surfaces.

M 50/1.4 basically similar
The M 1.4 lens was redesigned.

A 50/1.4 = F 50/1.4, and a slightly improved design than the previous

Other "K" lenses that appear to be M42 lenses in k-mount:
15/3.5 (although there are two versions of EACH, one asph and one not)
Yep. Quite a few Takumar were aspherical, but very few K lenses were.

24/3.5?
Same lens.

35/3.5
35/2
Said by Asahi to have been slightly modified. Not notable looking at
the lens diagram. Maybe they discarded the yellowing element and
played with the composition of other elements to compensate without
changing the configuration? Anybody has a yellowing K35/2?

85/1.8
Same optics, but squeezed in a smaller barrel. The only K lens with
52mm filter ring that cannot take the 52-49 step-down ring.

105/2.8 (this design is REALLY old as Pentax glass goes)
1961. The 35/3.5 is an older design though (1959).

135/2.5
135/3.5
200/4?
Same.

400/5.6
500/4.5
1000/8 also.

Apparently NOT 28/3.5, which is odd, as the M42 28/3.5 is a great lens.
Asahi did not rested on their laurels, they made it even better!

It's interesting to me that many of the lenses on this list are now the
rare and desirable ones. I've got all of them in M42 and none of them
in k-mount.
They will be easier to use on a D body!

I like the OOF bodies in the background - puts them in a context,

Seriously, we're always glad to see you here (again), David.

WRT the memory card, the K1000 has an innovative and daring new type
of memory card: a sort of "anologue memory strip".

Instead of fiddling with little slots, the whole back of the camera
opens to accept the card. The card itself is a largish, ergonomically
shaped cylinder. Just pull the cellulose "capture area" across the
back of the shutter to a handy take-up spool, close the back of the
camera, and you're set to go.

These memory cassettes have good points and bad points. On the bad
side, they'll only take 36 frames. One the good side, there's only
one resolution to choose from (highest) - you can compress the files
later in your computer for internet purposes. And, if your batteries
run out, the capture system still works! Just shoot away, setting
your own aperture and shutter speed manually! How's that for
innovation!!

Have fun!

cheers,
frank

Ah, one of those new critters that uses
Flexible Internally Loaded Memory!
We here on the list have coin the friendly term
F.I.L.M. for that type of memory, quite unique stuff.
Solar powered and totally insensitive to magnetic fields.
Good stuff!
You will find that on the right side of the camera is a
winder crank that is used to advance from one 40-60
Megapixel segment of memory to the next.
Lifting the LEFT hand crank after winding all of the
memory into it's protective "Memory Module" opens the
access panel to allow another memory module to be installed.
These modules are typically found to contain either
24 or 36 of these 40-60MP memory segments.

Hope this helps!

lives . The second one's cute, and I like the fellow with the
unicycle - he's just so blase about walking about with that honking
big thing!

The Paris photo doesn't do much for me. Not that it's a bad photo, it
just (for some reason that I'm unable to articulate at this moment)
doesn't say much to me.

Well, having read all the posts here about what to throw out, and what
to keep, and putting stuff into circular file cabinets and everything
else, let me add my two cents.

Here's what I throw out:

NOTHING!

That's not to say that I haven't lost a few negs over the years, but
surprisingly, I've come across some that I took a way back in the
70's.

A sheet of negs takes up little space. Everything I've taken since
I've become "more serious" about our little hobby some 6 or 7 years
ago remains with me. It always will. I've never thrown out a print,
either. But, now that I don't routinely print everything, just get
contacts and only print the ones that interest me, it takes up even
less space.

I don't know why I keep everything. I mean, I've revisited some older
negs and re-thought what I like and what I don't. But beyond that, I
suppose that my thinking is that they take up so little space, why
throw anything out?

Some day, after I'm dead and gone, someone will go through my
"things", find these, and there will be some sort of record of some of
what I did in my life. Mind you, whoever finds them will likely just
toss them anyway ..

After having lunch with Frank and David Brooks and Jeff I decided that I'd

I've got a question about my "new to me" k1000 - it's been a while since I
owned one and I'm almost a newbie again me thinks - but here's my question:

Where do I put the memory card in the K1000??? ;)

You make me blush, Marnie.

I'm glad you liked it. I was a little worried when I saw the theme
for January, as I don't take a lot of tree shots. I was actually
looking for another shot, one of my daughter Claire climbing the very
tree that provided the bark for this month's photo. When I saw this
one, I thought it looked better than the one I was looking for.

Now I have to find a "blue" shot for next month. That could be a bit harder...

Thibouille, I've got a KX like yours and a few others
like Bob's. Bob's KX hotshoe has a slight indent in the shoe
itself where the tab is. The one I have like yours does not.
I think it was a variation during the life of the model.
Yours should have retaining springs on the rails that bend
up towards the front of the camera. Don't they provide enough
grip?

All taken with the LX, Vivitar S1 24-48, Vivitar 3700 ttl flash.
These are the first photos I've gotten back using the Omni
Pocket-Bounce on the flash, and I quite like it. Softens things
considerably, and widens the flash for those wide-angle shots.

Anyway, just a bunch of fun snapshots:

I agree with Peter and Bob. The plastic hood is a clip-on design,
and can be knocked off without too much trouble. The old Takumar
hood is a screw-in metal hood, and is much more likely to be of use
for protecting the lens from damage. (On the other hand, I'd say
that they're both pretty decent for shielding the lens from stray
light.)

Albano,

Not any more!! Photo.net has changed their policy. No more "100 free
uploads". I don't know exactly what it is now, as they have some
arcane (and unpublished) formula based on one's participation in the
photo rating game, both as a rater, and as far as how many ratings
your photos have.

So, my number of "freebies" went from 100, down to 46, now it's up to 50.

But, they still let you upload if you're over your limit, it's just
that they may delete some of your photos without notice if they need
the space.

Or, something like that. I can't figure it out...

I would not know about that there being no such thing as a local camera shop
here. An interesting thought, K-Mart used to be about the biggest seller of
K-1000's, so Pentax at one time sold through mass marketers.

PESO: Happy New Year!

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2998062&size=lg

FS Friday

2004-12-31 Thread Peter J. Alling
Well, I promised a list.of my surplus equipment, these Items are all
usable and might well suite someone's
style, but I never use them.

All prices are in US funds, shipping extra unless otherwise noted.
Method of payment negotiable but I frown upon paypal.

SMC Pentax Reflex Zoom 1:8~12 400-600mm I'm looking for $400.00 but
I'll entertain reasonable offers.
Condition: Needs a good cleaning but comes with front and rear caps,
only one filter, (clear glass). The good news is that it
takes standard 40.5mm filters, rear mounted, and it was listed a current
item on the Pentax USA website last time I looked, so
they probably still have them as parts. The list price was $2400.00+ so
it's a bargain for someone. I found it was most useful
as a very compact 400mm lens that could go to 600mm in a pinch.

SMC Pentax FA 1:3.8~5.6 28-200mm -IF&AL- with Caps and Dedicated hood.
Asking $200.00 but I'll entertain reasonable offers.
Condition: Nearly new. There's a rub mark on the Hood and the front
cap is after market, I wish I hadn't lost the original cap since it
was one of those great Tamron jobbies with "Pentax" emblazoned across
it. This would make a great second lens with the kit lens
on an *ist-D or Ds. Manual focus feel is very good for an auto focus
lens by the way, the second best I've ever experienced.

Now the real Gems
SMC Pentax M*300 f4.0 I've been procrastinating on this but if no one
wants it here it's going to e-bay. Asking $350.00
Condition, lightly used. Glass is clean and clear, aperture is snappy
and aperture ring clicks positively at each stop. Focus ring
feels like butter. I have the A* version as well so one of them must
go. KEH usually sell these in Bargain condition for almost
$400.00 and excellent for $500.00.

SMC Pentax [K] 1:3.5 135mm. Asking $125.00. This is the relatively
rare and legendary K lens not the later M version. It's
a bit longer and a bit heaver than the M but is very sharp with very
good contrast. I'm only parting with it because I also have
the SMC-P [K] 2.5 135mm and I never use this one anymore. Condition:
Glass is clean and clear, focus smooth with that
un-matched buttery k feel. The filter ring is dented. Comes with third
party front and rear caps, and the dedicated hood, (which
has a problem with one of it's clips, but I'm throwing it in so what the
heck. If you really want to you can remove the clips sacrifice
a cheap filter and glue the ring on as threads).

Vivitar 70-150mm 1:3.8 Close Focusing Auto Zoom with Vivitar 70-150mm 2x
Matched Multiplier Asking $150.00. This is the
original 2 touch version with the same optical formula as the original
and legendary, (gee I seem to be using that word a lot),
Vivitar 70-210mm Series 1. This was my walking around lens for about 10
years but it's been sitting on the shelf for some time now
and I'll give someone else a chance to play with it. It's not a lot
bigger and not much heavier than the Pentax [k] 135 f3.8. Both lens
and Matched Multiplier come with original rear caps the Lens with
original front cap. The lens has a built in hood. It's a great little lens
with the capability to go to 300mm in a pinch. The condition:
Multiplier like new, the lens is obviously used but not abused, focuses
and zooms with buttery smoothness. Aperture is crisp and snappy, ring
clicks positively into each stop.

Special Bargains.
Pentax ME SE Brown I'd say for repair of parts except... It works
perfectly, however I've managed to bung up the ASA dial, only
exposes at ISO 400, no exposure compensation. Otherwise it's cosmetic
condition is close to ex. A few bright marks. If you've got
a dead ME (shutter or meter problems), with a good ASA dial you can make
this one almost like new. Asking $45.00

Vivitar 17-28mm 4~5.6 as Parts. The joke gift of the year. I
disassembled this lens to try to fix a minor problem. It wasn't worth
getting it repaired. $20.00 free shipping anywhere in the US or Canada.
(Comes with original box and original Front and Rear caps
if you want them).

Non Pentax:
Stabilizer Quick Shot Shoulder Stock. One of the most comprehensive
shoulder stock systems I've ever seen. I bought it a few
years ago thinking I'd use it a lot in nature photography, I used it a
few times and it really works, but it doesn't suite my shooting
style. Condition used, includes carrying sack and manuals. Asking $120.00.

Vivitar M42 TX mount. Like new. These are getting a bit hard to find.
$20.00 plus shipping by USPS.

Nikon NF - T2 mount $12.00 plus Shipping by USPS.
Additionally I may be selling some Pentax M42 gear, ES-II and a couple
of assorted 55mm lenses, and maybe an M 50 f1.4 but I
haven't decided on those yet.

If you are on something like AOL or another common ISP, you usually have a
certain amount of FTP allotted to you. You have to learn how to access it,
create your own HTML pages, add the photo (scan or digital). Make your photos
jpgs
about 800X600 pixels so they will load quickly for others.

You can make an index page with thumbnails of all your PAWs and PESOs. Or you
can do what I do, just throw up a photo now and then, then later delete the
page and photo (I start running out of ftp space).

There are also photo services on the Net such PhotoNet and others (free and
not), where you can post your photos. The best way to become familiar with them
is just look at the urls when people post their photos on this list. I think
about every service is used on this list. When you look at others' photos you
see if you like the way the service lays out things.

RE: Film is Dying, Chapter 3

2004-12-31 Thread George Sinos
Bill -
Does your location accept files submitted via the Wal-Mart web site? If
so, is this a growing or significant percentage of your printing?

There are three places here in town, that offer this service with next day
(or even one-hour) pickup. Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and a local family owned
camera shop called Rockbrook Camera. Wal-Mart and Rockbrook are about a
quarter a print; Sam's is an unbelievable eighteen cents. I can't make
4x6's that cheap.

I don't know if it's a big part of their business, but I think it's a great
service. I can't help but think it will be a growing part of the business.

Last weekend I showed my mother, who just got her first digital camera at
76 years old, how to use the service. She had transferred about a dozen
photos, taken Christmas day, to her computer. She ordered single prints of
four images and five copies of a fifth image. The total order was 9 prints
coming to a bit over $2.00 (US)

Had she used her 35mm point and shoot or, more typically for her, a single
use camera she would have ordered double prints of the full roll of 24
shots. She probably would have paid about $6 to $10 for that. Add another
$7 to $10 if she would have ordered a set of files on a CD.

I'm not sure which order is more profitable for the seller. Where does the
photo center make it's money these days? Is it sheer volume?

Just curious.
See you later, gs

Re: PESO, PAW, etc.-How to post?

2004-12-31 Thread cbwaters
Steve,
To post an image to this list, you have to have it on the web somewhere.
The biggest public gallery here is the PUG (Pentax User's Gallery). It's
at: http://pug.komkon.org/
Submission information and monthly themes are accessed from links on that
page. Also, check out the large catalog of previous month's work. it's a
GREAT way to spend s day at work goofing off :)

There are many places on the web that you can upload your photos to. Most
cost money. Make sure you check the fine print for their copyright
information. You don't want to give them permission to use your photos
however they want...

And check with your ISP. There's probably a small amount (10MB) of storage
space that you get with your monthly service. It can be very confusing at
first but once you get the hang of it and can remember what the URLs are,
it's pretty easy to use your ISPs space.

Good luck!

Good questions, Steve, I will add this information to the mini-FAQ, but am
answering it here as well to make sure you see it.

For PESO/PAW/WOW/ETC, you put it up on the web somewhere and post a URL in your
message. You can not post photos directly to the list, the list management
software will automatically delete your post.

For the more formal monthly PUG (http://pug.komkon.org/) there is a link to
instructions at the bottom of the page.

Photos for the PUG must be made with Pentax equipment. For the others that is
preferred, but not required.

PUG Faves

2004-12-31 Thread Eactivist
I have shot a lot of trees. I like trees, a lot. I almost submitted a tree to
the PUG, because I have a lot of trees shot on my former Pentax. But didn't
realize it was the PUG deadline in time to actually scan and stuff.

These jumped out at me of this month's PUG. Pretty much all I say is that I
like them.

Backyard in Fog by Cory Waters ---

Great colors, great trunks, nice fog. Good composition.

Gnarled by Frank Theriault -

I like bark and I like knots. This has both. I've even though of shooting a
whole series with my decent macro lens of just bark. This is the sort of thing
I would be aiming for. Simple but has it all. Nice texture, nicely abstract.

Winter Trees by Peter J. Alling --

Nice sepia tone, nice soft focus, has a nice feel of desolation/loneliness.
Looks sort of like a painting.

Winter Mist by Thomas Cakalic --

Truly great atmospheric conditions, nice layers in picture, cool tree -- pops
out, good composition.

Used Tree by Joseph Tainter -

Mainly because I've been there. Great shot of the ruin, and it's also a nice
variation on the tree theme to have an old log.

Fall in the Tetons by Harald Rust ---

Nothing new, I always like his stuff. He's one of the people on the list that
I truly hate. :-)

Tall Pines by Dan Matyola --

Nice clouds in sky as back drop to tree tops. I've tried this several times
and it hasn't worked for me yet. Although I haven't been in the pines when
I've tried it, so that's probably why. :-) This turned out nice.

Well, those are the ones that jumped out at me. But all are great, not a
klunker in the bunch.

I love trees. I like this PUG's photos -- like them all. Feel free to send me

2004-12-31 Thread Graywolf
Thanks once again for all your efforts, Adelheid.
I have decided that for 2005 I am going to select one shot from each gallery as
"Graywolf's Pick". Graywolf's Pick will be the shot that I like the best. Not
neccesarily the shot best shot of the month, but definate the one that speaks to
me the loudest. and like all critics opinions, all that is is my opinion. I will
post that under the subject heading of "Graywolf's Pick".

Have a great 2005!
Cheers
Adelheid
PS: I had to reject one pic because of non Pentax equipment used. I accepted
one without mentioning the gear because it is christmas time . But
please give at least an information that Pentax gear was used.
