PESO - Rainbow

2005-02-10 Thread Bruce Dayton
This was taken recently on a photo outing with my middle daughter. I
used the Yellow/Blue Polarizer to enhance the small rainbow showing at
the bottom of the water falling.

Comments welcome.

I have to say that I rather like this. Probably not something I would
have thought of taking, but it's kind of nice to see mostly grays
instead of strong orange/yellow/reds. It has a somber, end of day

Thanks for sharing with us.

The *ist D and *ist Ds have pretty decent optics (if you so desire :-)

Exactly, the machines they use don't really matter that much. Here in Vancouver
I
have tried a few so-called pro labs and their quality vary a lot. One with
excellent
prints often suffers from dust spot on prints and badly scratched developed
negatives. One with substandard print quality does excellent developing when
they
were in the mood, but sometimes with scratches and spots which are impossible to
remove. Another one which is consistent on C41 & E6 developing, does blurry matt
prints but super vivid sharp gloss prints (too vivid for my taste). But guess
what,
the one I like most is a small lab which is consistent on both C41 developing
and
machine printing. It is not a pro lab but the owner does excellent studio
portraits
which is also part of his service. And the best of all, the prints will always
be
ready in 1 hour.

Disappointment at the Lab / Questions to Ask of New Lab

2005-02-10 Thread Shel Belinkoff
I've been using a couple of local labs here for a while for color
processing, and overall their work has been quite good. Lately, however,
the film has been coming back badly spotted, scratched, and with what
appear to be water stains. My camping experience is no longer a happy one.
These labs have been using the dip-n-dunk process, for what that's worth.

I've mentioned the problem and have gotten free processing as a result, but
I'd much rather pay the money and get better results. I'm going to start
looking for a new lab or two. So, to all you lab gurus out there, my plan
is to check out the possibilities and ask a lot of question.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about what questions to ask, and I
wouldn't know what answers to look for. What should I ask about their
processing and equipment? What kind of responses are good? If they tell
me that they use such and such a machine, or that it's calibrated in some
particular way, what the hell do I know?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Shel

Hi Isaac,
That was a bit of PDML humor. If common sense prevails -- and I'm certain it

and more cost effective to design a camera around the digital concept rather
than trying to adapt an old camera. Sorry, no digital back for the venerable

So true. Bodies come and go, but lenses are forever. A fine optic will always
be a fine optic. The camera is simply the open and close device that goes
between lens and film or, in the new world, lens and sensor. And isn't it
interesting that while the recording mechanisim has changed, the lens remains
the hero.

RE: PESO: Forgotten Tree

2005-02-10 Thread Shel Belinkoff
Running late on some comments.

First allow me to say that the K55/1.8 is a very nice lens. It's not as
sharp as some, and needs to be stopped down a bit for best results, but I
like the way it renders the image on film.

This pic is quite soft, far softer than the results the K55/1.8 is capable
of producing. I suspect it's because you used a flat bed scanner.
Contrast is soft, too. But the thing is, whether by accident or intent, it
works for me on one level and up to a point. The softness and reduced
contrast give the photo an old time look. It reminds me of many old photos
I've seen recently in museums. However, the framing is pretty bad. That
big, white area in the upper left corner really detracts from the rest of
the picture.

It also appears that the scan was made in RGB, not greyscale. In this case
the RGB adds a little tone to the image, and that tone is in keeping with
the older look and feel. I don't want to suggest that you only scan and
post B&W film-based images in greyscale, but, if you did this accidentally
you might want to be careful with subsequent scans. If you want
greyscale,be sure that's what you're getting.

The feeling I get from this photo is that it works as well as it does (up
to the framing issue) more as a result of accidents and circumstance than
intention and planning. Of course, I could be way off base ... and I'm
sure you'll tell me. At least I hope you would ;-))

Also, if you are extremely inexperienced you should also be using the very best
tools. You might not be able to get the best out of them but, equally, you
will not be blaming shortcomings of the equipment on (what you think is) your
own failings.

Hi, Wendy,

I was going to post, and tell everyone what a great weekend I had, but
a few things got in the way.

I did get up to Ottawa on Saturday, and we skated from about 11:00 am
to 1:00 pm. It was a gorgeous day - just above freezing, but the ice
was still nice and hard. We skated about 2/3 way down the canal
starting from the Snowbowl (?) and back again. By the time we got
back the ice surface was getting a teeny bit mushy from the warm sun,
so it was a good time to stop.

It really is a lot of fun to skate all that distance without turning
around (we figured we skated around 10 km, total). There were things
to do along the way, and a few "warming stations" that would have been
good a few weeks ago during the cold-snap: open air fireplaces
(surrounded by a grid) for warming hands and bums, although we
certainly didn't need them on Saturday. Still, the burning wood
smelled good.

As far as the snow sculptures, well, most of them hadn't even been
started when we were there on Saturday afternoon. They were, for the
most part, covered by cardboard to prevent melting, and were still in
blocks (ie: unsculpted) when we were there.

So, being the good Canadians we are, we went to the War Memorial, then
over to the Parliament Buildings to test out the fisheye. I wanted to
have a chat with the PM, but apparently one needs an appointment. We
saw the Old Guy Who Feeds the Stray Cats (pretty cool), and even saw a
Ridiculous Political Protest: some guy named Rick (he even signed his
"work") wandered out onto the Ottawa River right behind the Parliament
Buildings and spelled out the words "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"
in the virgin snow on the river surface. You could see where he then
hightailed it across the river to Hull. Sadly, no hole in the ice
where he might have fallen through .

For those of you who don't know (which would be, like, the Rest of the
World), our Members of Parliament are about to vote on a bill which
would specifically allow gay marriage. Or to be more precise, in the
Marriage Act, the words "man and wife" will be removed, and it will be
specified that homosexual marriages are to be allowed. It's going to
be a "free vote" (ie: MP's won't be tied to party lines), and it's
expected to pass, much to the apparent chagrine to Rick (see above)
and his ilk.

So, that was our trip to Ottawa. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier.
I kind of threw my back out on Friday, and although I skated and
walked, I wasn't too comfortable. It got worse on Sunday, so I stayed
in Kingston with the kids on Monday (they had the day off school
anyway), and although I got home on Monday pm, I didn't work Tuesday
either, due to the back. It seems that I have lower back spasms, and
it hurts like a bugger.

So, since I didn't have a chance to post until Tuesday, I thought it
was a bit late for weekend stuff. But, since you mention it, Wendy, I
figured I might as well.

I worked these last two days, but in considerable pain. It's not
getting any worse, though, so I figure I'm okay. It's actually better
on the bike; it hurts to walk or bend over, but cycling is okay.

The joys of getting old...

cheers,
frank

However if you are out to make the the best end product wouldn't
it make sense to use the best tools for the job?
If the operator part of the equation is up to the challenge,
certainly.
But to get the best equipment in _anticipation_ that it will make
you a better photographer, is not only putting the cart in front...
it's a bit of kidding yourself, isn't it?
How do you perform with "merely" average equipment?
Are you capable of using it as well as it's possible? Are you
wringing out the last little bit of performance, each photo
session?
Honestly?
Then perhaps it would be a good idea to buy up. To upgrade your
equipment. Because you're probably as good as you can be with what
you're using right now.
Somewhere around the house, I have a really cheap ass 80-200 zoom
lens.
I submit to you that in any given circumstance, my top end prime
lenses will produce a technically superior picture.
The operator isn't part of this particular equation, as picture
esthetics should be treated as a seperate issue.

Re: Need Help: Powerpoint slide show with music

2005-02-10 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello John,

I have gone down that road in the long past and finally concluded that
the best approach is to use a video editing program that has a
timeline. The video editors handle stills as well as video. You drop
your images on the timeline and drop the music track down. Adjust
duration of slides that you want and then have the editor create a DVD
- playable on most any DVD player. On top of that, you have something
to give the viewers that doesn't require a computer or special
software, etc.

The one I use most of the time is Ulead Video Studio - currently on
version 8. Adobe Premiere Elements is also pretty good (more buggy
for me).

There is a little more work involved this way, but the productions can
look much more professional.

It's probably 2.5 hrs for 1600-1800mAh batteries but I'd assume 3 to 3.5hrs for
a set of 2300mAh high capacity cells due to thermal losses dependant upon their
initial state of discharge of course. If the charger is a good one they may
take as little as 1.5hrs depending on how deep your equipment will let the
batteries discharge before deeming them exhausted.

A street shot from Curacao, a small island in the Caribbean I had been

Since this is my first PESO I'd really appreciate your input and comments.

Oh cripes. I've been stuck down in Tetsworth all day, which is in our patch.

It's 2 miles from Highgrove (Prince Charles' home in Gloucestershire) and
the place has been crawling with TV crews (including our lot) filming
everything and anything. Zz.

Been doing lives into our bulletins all day. Managed one lousy shot of
where we were parked down a side street off the town centre:

That's my camera car in front, followed by out ITV Central sat-van, and
then a BBC sat-truck bringing up the rear. First shot off a new lens (EF
20mm 2.8 but you didn't need to know that ;-)

Oddly enough I filmed Prince Charles yesterday at the site for The Centre
For Islamic Studies being built in Oxford. He always seems very charming,
never says a word to the press though, and we are herded about by Royal
minions like sheep to the slaughter.

He does a lot of good work I spose, so good luck to him.

This film was released a couple of years ago along with the Velvia 100F and
Astia 100F. I doubt Velvia 50 will be gone from the shelves next year as the
Velvia 100 doesn't have a remotely similar color palette.

I'll take that bet.

There's still the aperture actuating lever, which is pretty close to
the location of the aperture sensing cam. There's no need to place
any newly-introduced extra power & data contacts there; there's still
quite a bit of unused space in other parts of the lens mount.

I'm sure the aperture sensing was dropped as an independent decision
to eliminate a redundant mechanism, rather than being forced to make
space for some future connectors.

That doesn't necessarily mean I think it was a good decision; just
that it was a decision taken solely on the perceived merits of the link.

...except that the only places in London where you can buy them are the Leica
shops.

In Richard Caplan, which is the store in question, they do have a
slightly snooty attitude on the whole, but that fits their location,
St. James's, where everything is by appointment to Prince Charles.

They do, however, know a lot about Leicas. I've never met or gret anyone
else while in there, so I guess I'm not elite, but they will happily chat
even to hoi-polloi like me. They are over-priced though, but I guess their
regulars can afford it.

All the Leica dealers I've bought from have been quite down-to-earth.
I think they have to put on airs and graces for some customers, but if
they know you're a photographer rather than a poser they seem to be
ok. A lot of their customers are members of Her Majesty's Press, so
they have to know what they're talking about.

Re: PESO - hair braiding

2005-02-10 Thread Badri A
Thanks for your comments!

You're right, the hair-stylist is too dark. Unfortunately I didn't
have my huge add-on flash with me that day. These are the (few) times
I wish I had a newer body with a built-in flash.
Would a half-stop overexposure have worked? Of course, I wasn't
thinking about the woman in the shadows at exposure time or I would
have tried it.

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3107800

this is the original image, uncropped. I cropped out the elements I
thought were distracting and didn't add to the theme of the
hair-braiding stall - but it does have some breathing space. Do you
think it looks better?

Yes, she is a bit soft. I guess my manual focusing wasn't that
accurate on this quick snapshot.

Again, thanks for looking!

RE: PESO - hair braiding

2005-02-10 Thread Rick Womer
I agree with Butch. An alternative to trying to throw
the background out of focus might be to use a
wider-angle lens and move in closer; the background
objects will be larger in number but smaller in size,
and contribute context and "atmosphere" without as
much distraction. A number of viewers are clearly
kinda distracted!

After seeing that, makes me want to check my bread a bit more
carefully before eating. How much magnification is it? How did you
get to that magnification?

Without a title, I would be hard pressed to figure out just what we
were looking at. Nice work.

Marnie,

This must be commute day for PESO's. I just commented on Ryan's
submission.

Like his, I find myself in this situation quite often, but rarely see
a picture of it. The lighting here is nice and helps the image.
After seeing Ryan's, I wonder how this would look in B&W?

I think you have a nice start to the project and hope that you will
continue to share as it comes along. Nice work!
