Hi!

Yes, the black background helps.

Told ya ;-).

A truly well executed scenario for... for what? I see two possibilities:

1. This picture wants to depict the inside of the church, as it could be
required for a tourist guide or the like. If so, it's OK.

:-/

2. This picture wants to be worth in itself, whichever the place is. If
so,

it needs a subject to focus on at a certain time. A well visible person
(dressed in pure black) beside pillar No.3 from left (4 from right) would
complete the shot.

A question, honest and direct - isn't dialog between the lecturer stand

Sounds like the high bidder backed out and the seller is now trying to sell

A classic way that a dishonest eBayer will drive up the price on an item
is to use separate email accounts that have separate eBay accounts (using
separate eBay IDs of course, registered to separate home addresses) in
order to bid up the price, hoping the genuine bidder(s) will respond. If
they don't, that's when you get the emails illustrated here.

AFAIK it is Canon's plan to consolidate the top line into one model,
obviously full frame with the higher frame rate, and that's just a matter
of the electronics handling the data quickly enough. It will happen. They
don't want people using ~200mm 2.8 focal lengths for sport when there's
much more expensive ~300mm and 400mm 2.8s to be sold

So it should go.

It's the AF version.
Here's the caveat:
The zoom ring has some play, so you simply keep it pulled back when
turning it.

Otherwise it loses electrical contact with the body.
As a result I got it for a good price.
And I'm going to pass it on for that price PLUS I'll throw in the 1.4x AF TC.

The first part is legal boilerplate, so they don't have to write a new
EULA for each piece of software. Basicly, it states that if the software
is labelled 'Trial Version' you can use it for 15 days or 20 launches.

The Second states that RawShooter Essentials is free, but you need to
register and they will spam you. This means that the provision in the
EULA does not apply.

CR-2016 Lithium Batteries for istDS

2005-09-10 Thread Shel Belinkoff
I noticed a couple of web sites mention that the istDS is supposed to come
with CR-2016 Lithium Batteries for the date function. I didn't see such a
battery in the package I received, nor can I find any mention of it in the
copy of the manual that I have. This is one of those little button
batteries. So, what's the deal? If you've a DS, did you get such a
battery? Was it inside the camera? Where in the camera is it and how can
it be changed or replaced?

I suspect that's confusion on the part of the websites. The D comes with
a CR-2016, the DS does not, according to their respective manuals. The
DS uses a capacitor to power the settings storage, which lasts ~48 hours
while the D uses the lithium battery.

LED lighting

2005-09-10 Thread Bertil Holmberg

Does anyone have experience of LED lighting panels in photography?

Although there are commercial products available, it should not be
that difficult for the electronics buff to make a couple of panels
quite cheap. White high intensity LEDs are avaialble for about $50
per 100 and that should be enough for small object photography, I
think. With 25-50 light sources mounted close together, a diffusor
seems unnecessary.

What kind of light intensity would be required at a distance of 50 cm
(20 inches)? I'm afraid that I know little about the physics involved
apart from that some of it is measured in Candela. Ah, the Wiki says
that a 100W bulb emits about 120 Cd. A 5mm LED can give 20.000 mCd so
100 of the blighters should give 2000 Cd. That sounds pretty intense,
does't it?

Any help is appreciated :-)

There is little difference, except a faster shutter speed on the 3.
But this comparing the MZ-3 and the MZ-5n.
The MZ-5 has less features and doesn't sound or feel as well built
as the newer 5n version.
I've not owned the 3 but I have 2 5n's and am very pleased.
The specs for them can be found here:

2005-09-10 Thread Jens Bladt
Look at Dimitrov's website: http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/
MZ-3 30 ~ 1/4000 sec., flash sync.: 1/125 ~ 30
MZ-5n 30 ~ 1/2000 sec., flash sync.: 1/100 ~ 30
MZ-5 30 ~ 1/2000 sec., flash sync.: 1/100 ~ 30

I guess the speed issues are the most obvous an important differences. 1/125
flash sync is not tooy fast, but bcertainly better than 1/100 sec.

MZ 3 is the newest model:

Hello Collin. Very intersting:
Which body have ypu used it with? (I use *ist D And MZ-S) (why does it lose
contact - is the contact conection wireing inside the lens damanged and may
be reapaired? I would need to have thos repaired - I guess 100UISD for a
reparair would be OK. I shoot concert shots in Av mode to ensure fast speed.
Thus will I need Av to work. I would probably use it at F.2.8-5.6 most of
the time. (For good light conditions I'll use my F 70-210mm).

I want shots like this, but at slower ISO (400-1600 ASA) speeds:

Have your ever had it disassembled (my 1st Tokina AT-X 2.6-2.8 28-70mm
suffered the same, due to unqualified repair attempt(me) after an impact
damage.
The zoom ring thing doesn't really bother me, as I often shoot 20-100
similar shots without ever changing my position or the subject framing.

Tokina 80-200/2.8 AT-X AF

I got this from a PDMLer, but with one caveat.
Then I got the 80-400, so this has sat in its box and I've hardly touched
it.
So it should go.

It's the AF version.
Here's the caveat:
The zoom ring has some play, so you simply keep it pulled back when
turning it.
Otherwise it loses electrical contact with the body.
As a result I got it for a good price.
And I'm going to pass it on for that price PLUS I'll throw in the 1.4x AF

RSE does not launch.
If RSE did not close gracefully, there is a chance that it will not launch
the next time that you go to use it. If this should ocur, please download
this file and run it (double-click) from anywhere in your system. This
should clear up the problem by deleting a temp file that was left behind due
to the improper closure of RSE.
URL: http://pictureflow.fileburst.com/_rs/fixtempdir.bat
Whatever this file does, it solved the problem.

So if you ever experience the same thing, run that file.

Specs can be misleading. The Tokina is the smallest 2.8 wide zoom ever
produced, and for the speed and reach, it's quite small.Unfortunately,
the samples I have tried were quite bad on digital, with lot of purple
fringing and other failures. I have heard good things about it on

be worth a look. Perhaps it's sample variation, or whatever.

the last 1 hour) from spending a thoroughly enjoyable day and night

if anyone had noticed he was missing and I said Nah, and he just

then we went to Perth to do some night photography. I also got to play
with his FA 200 f2.8 (I feel an enablement coming on g), Voigtlander
125mm f2.5 (that is a mighty fine piece of glass) and his pano rig..

He and his partner drove over from Sydney for a holiday. She has since
flown home Rob is going to be driving back in the next week. So you
should expect him to be back online in a couple of weeks (depending on
how may detours he makes g).

For those of you who are unaware of where Perth is in relation to
Sydney, well, they are on opposite sides of the country. That drive is
5000 + km either way, so it takes awhile :-)

I'll post a few pictures tomorrow...er...later today. But I'm not
posting a pic of Rob unless he posts his shot of me. We both managed
to take shots of each other at our daggy best VBG

It was a good time, he's a good bloke I learnt quite allot from him.

F 17-28 Fisheye Redux

2005-09-10 Thread Michael Bergstrom
A couple of months ago I purchased a bargain-grade 17-28 Pentax Fisheye
Zoom from KEH. After receiving the lens and checking it out I wrote to
the list as it appeared to me to be mis-assembled (the lens, not the
list). It was focusing well past infinity at the infinity mark, and at
17mm zoom its minimum focus distance was ~5 feet as opposed to the
indicated 1.5 feet. At the 28mm setting it was a bit better but still
out past infinity for most of the available focus travel.

So I shipped it back requesting repair or replacement with another
bargain 17-28 they happened to have in stock. I received the other
lens as a replacement, and it exhibited the exact same symptoms! At
this point I was suspecting that I was the one who was having the
problem, not the lens. I kept it and have tested it and played with it
and partially disassembled and reassembled it several times and I'm now
convinced that it is indeed mis-assembled somehow; and not just because
I took it apart, I was convinced before I began taking it apart. I
have not been able to isolate the problem.

I have a theory, but before I spend a lot of typing a longer screed and
bore the vast majority of you, I was hoping that someone might have had
some personal experience taking this lens apart or know where a service
manual or exploded diagram (an intact diagram might be helpful as well)
is posted on the web or available for purchase, or at least can
commiserate with me on my experience and tell me this is a known
phenomenon. If there is such a person you may contact me off-list if
you like.

Thanks, Michael

Hi Shel,
Thanks. I make prints of the best shots. Sometimes I'll gang (9) 4 x 6
prints on a sheet of 13 x 19 paper. Then cut them out and store them in
albums. I'm currently using Epson Premium Lustre. I print a few as 8x12
or 11 x17 for framing. I send jpegs to family members and friends. I
store all RAW and converted images on hard drives and DVD backup.

Hi Dave ... I'd need a long tie LOL

Thanks for you good wishes. It's hard to imagine getting two duds in a
row, but considering everything, I ain't counting the chickens ...

I'd decided that if the DS couldn't be replaced I'd get one of the istD's
that are on the KEH site. A bit more spendy, but still within budget
(barely) for what I want, which is essentially to learn the digital
workflow and see if it's something I want to continue with without spending
too many $$ to get started. I'm cautiously embracing the idea, although
I have to admit to being excited as well.

I like this. The light is very subdued and somewhat flat, that's why
the color isn't vibrant. But I prefer this kind of subtlety to direct
sun and hard shadow. As far as the background is concerned, it's what
was there at this magic moment. Nice shot.
