The book may be overrated, but the radio play was very good. And that
is how it started it's life.

that's a very disappointing story - I was expecting to see someone
showing their bottom repeatedly. The type of people they hire are

Here in Sydney, while they pay to shoot in the city, there are plenty of
tax breaks for them to make it worthwhile. All complaints...speak to the

No ducking necessary. I'd go further with the photoshoppery and clone
out the pipe on the right too. The high key background really pops the
critter. Square format, classy.

Reminds me of Luka's fortunate pigeon shot a few weeks back.

Re: Pentax service question...

2008-09-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
I just had a very good experience with Pentax Service. Some may
recall that I dropped my AF 540FGZ on its nose. On a hard floor. The
zoom motor quit working and the case and wide angle diffuser were
damaged. I sent it to Pentax Colorado. They fixed it for $119. I got
it back today, and it's as good as new. Shot with it this afternoon.
Looks new as well.

I also had a good experience with my K10D, which didn't focus
correctly with DA* lenses, although it was fine with other autofocus
lenses. Sent it in without the lenses, which I need on a regular
basis. It too came back working perfectly.

My K20D has focused very nicely from the start. Some minor
adjustments of focal points proved beneficial with some of my lenses,
but I have no complaints. It's been a great workhorse of a camera. I
have 15,000 exposures on it now.

Re: Samsung Xenogon D 35mm f2.0 lense anyone?

2008-09-18 Thread Thibouille
It IS indeed a FA35/2 with Samsung badge on it and manufactured by
Pentax (both Samsung lenses ans bodies are still manufactured by
Pentax).

It is pretty damn good if report I read are true (both film and PAS-C
sensor). It makes a very nice normal lens on APS-C as well.

Re: PESO BW Butterfly

2008-09-18 Thread Bruce Dayton
The B&W treatment gives it a very different look. Makes you look at
the pattern a bit more. There seems to be some kind of bar or
something near the bottom that doesn't make sense - it just sticks
out a bit from the butterfly. I think I would clone that out. Also
it seems odd the butterfly is clinging to ? glass perhaps?

Just seems not quite finished in PP. I would go a bit further with
it myself.

wavelet denoising. That ufraw version 0.14 also has lensfun (lense
correction for geometry, vignetting and TCA). Why I like ufraw again is
that unlike Pentax Photo Lab 3.50 I have all of my lenses tested and
added to lense XML database thats easy to edit and update. I don't need
to manually change settings every RAW image I convert. Simply chose from
the database ranging DA 10-17mm -- DA* 300mm and a bunch of FA lenses.
My lense database on my public domain if interested:

Actually, no they don't. The same "fair use" that protects your right to
photograph in a public place, gives them cover as long as your
appearance is fairly anonymous.

If you appear fleetingly in some scene showing pedestrians, gawkers or
bystanders of any sort in the background, but are not singled out or
prominently featured in any way, they don't need a release.

If they zoomed in on your face for a closeup, then they would.

Also, if they caught any part of your argument with the ass producer and
wanted to use THAT, they'd have to get a release.

I'm in some B-movie filmed here in NC in the 80s. They used a newly
opened section of I-40 near Wilmington, NC for filming.

It was open for about a week, then closed again - and they DIDN'T put up
a sign about it being used as a movie set. It was open the day before
when I drove down, and closed when I was going back home the next day.

I ignored the barricade, and drove on through. And I thought I wasn't
the only one, because it looked like normal traffic on the highway.

Next thing I know, some asshole in a hopped up car comes flying past me
and dozens of police cars chasing him.

A few minutes later, I see them all heading down the other side, going
the other way ???

Then, here they all come back past me again ... W.T.F. is going on here?

Finally, I go under an overpass, and there's a film crew on the
embankment with the director, and all the hangers on, and a camera
mounted on a hydraulic boom capturing the whole thing ... and some guy
yelling "KEEP MOVING, KEEP MOVING!"

Which I did. ;-D

A friend who saw the movie said there was a big blue Chevy van like mine
in a chase scene.

So, I don't think they need a release.

Thanks, Christine. I agree with you about the subtlety. It doesn't
hit you over the head like a hammer, does it?

And, as you already know, it's Grumpy Old Men that you're thinking

Thanks Bruce.

The lenses. So far I have:

Nikkor AF-D 35mm f2
Nikkor AF-D 50mm f1.4
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro
Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 Macro APO Lanthar

The Nikon 50 & 35mm are handy focal lengths & make for a relatively
compact lens/body combination. I've no experience with the FA 35mm f2,
so I can't compare, but the Nikkor is pretty soft @ f2 and distorts a
bit. but for what I use that lens for it's performance is acceptable.
Same with the 50, not as nice as the FA 50 f1.4, but usable. Stopped
down a bit, both lenses are fine.

I have for a long time steered away from Sigma due to previous bad
experiences. But I couldn't afford to start out buying both the new
body & the Nikon equivalent 24-70mm f2.8. This forced me to consider
the Sigma. I gave it a good workout in the store & was convinced that
i had a good copy. Sharp, nice contrast etc. So I got it & haven't
regretted that purchase. The only thing I wished was that it had the
flare resistance of my Pentax glass. I have to pay extra attention
when shooting near bright light sources.

The Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 Macro I also have in Pentax mount & was the
one lens I really wanted to have access to on the Nikon. As it's out
of production & highly sort after, when one came up on eBay & was
going for a reasonable price I pounced on it. I recommend to anyone,
if you can find a copy & it won't cost you your first born or both
kidneys, get it. It is beautifully sharp & the bokeh is delicious. I
love this lens.

The camera:

It's solid, well built, big & relativity heavy. However I have carried
it around all day without any ill effects :-)

It's nice to shoot looking through a decent VF again. On occasion I
have both the K20D & D700 with me when I'm out shooting & switching
from the D700 to the K20D, I really notice how small the K20D's VF
really is. The D700 UI is very nice. This is why I went with Nikon
over Canon. I just really like how Nikon's bodies handle & coming from
Pentax the re-learning curve isn't very steep.

AF is snappy & I haven't noticed the "Penatx 2 step" style of focusing
(ie quick & dirty, then a final adjustment). Either it doesn't do it,
or I'm not noticing it because the Nikon screw drive AF is lower
pitched & less obvious.

Metering is spot on in most situations. I'm finding it more accurate
than the K20D at any rate.

Live view implementation is much better than the K20D. So much so that
I actually use it (the macro of the Viola was focused using LV). You
can zoom in without the image quality falling apart almost instantly.
Also the virtual horizon in live view (and in the VF) is a neat
feature. When I shoot at night I can't always see the horizon so this
is a useful feature.

ISO & low noise performance live up to the hype & are my main reasons
for the purchase. With the K20D I always hesitated to shoot over ISO
800, I would if I had no other choice, but preferred not to. With the
D700 I don't even think twice about going up to ISO 3200. Also as
mentioned previously for long exposure night shots, none of my Pentax
DSLR's have been able to come close to the low noise performance.

Buying the D700 wasn't easy or frivolous decision. I didn't really
want to do it, but I'm starting to find a direction to my photography
and it's low light & long exposures. Unfortunately the current Pentax
technology just isn't up to satisfying my requirements. I'm also not
convinced that Samsung have enough experience in sensor design yet to
produce what I'm after. I hope I am proven wrong, and that Hoya Pentax
will do something special soon.

Cheers,

Dave

At the moment I'm mainly using LR 1.xx (I haven't made the upgrade to
LR 2 yet). But to use it I have to convert all my .nef files to .dng.
Apparently LR2 recognises the D700 .nef RAW files.

PS CS3 I use when more intense editing is required.

Well as I said in my reply to Bruce, I tested the lens pretty

In a theater or other private venue that's (usually) true -- it depends
on the rules of the venue and the terms on your admission ticket. But in
a public place like P.J.s case he's entirely free to take whatever
photos he wants, whether they're bystanders or actors, in performance or
not.

Last time something like that happened to me I was on a subway
platform with camera poised - aimed at an incoming train, not at
people.

A security guard approached me and told me that taking photographs was
prohibited by TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) regulation 16. I
rather took him by surprise when I replied that I was aware that
regulation 16B prohibited the taking of photographs "for commercial
purposes" without express written permission of the TTC. (the
regulations, which have been incorporated into a City Bylaw are posted
near a door on each subway car - and I'd read 'em!)

I patiently told him that I'd never sold a photo taken in the subway
system and didn't intend to sell what I was taking that day, so in
fact I had the right to shoot.

He said it made passengers feel uncomfortable to see a guy with a
camera and asked again nicely if I could stop shooting. Deciding that
(a) he was being nice about it, and (b) he had a gun and I didn't, and
(c) in fact I was on private property (okay, it was quasi-public, but
that's another discussion for another day) and he could in fact hand
me a Notice under the Trespass Act and boot me off the premises for no
good reason whatsoever, I chose to save my fight for another day.

I smiled and said, "Okay, look, I'm putting my lenscap on and turning
off the camera. I certainly don't want to offend anyone or make them
feel uncomfortable. Thanks!" And that was that.

So that's my story.

I like your stoy, though. I'll join the swelling chorus and suggest
you take a photo-walk again, in the same area, tomorrow.

cheers,
frank

For lenses, you've got a few good options. The Zeiss ZF 35/2 is a
major upgrade over the Nikon 35/2 AF-D (which is a decent lens, but
not up to its 35/2 AI-S predecessor) and the 35/1.4 AI-S is excellent
as well, although not as sharp as the Zeiss. Similarly the Zeiss ZF
50's are nice upgrades over the 50mm f1.4 AF-D, as is the Voigtlander
58/1.4 and the Nikkor 50 and 58 f1.2's. The Zeiss 50/1.4, Voigtlander
58/1.4 and Nikkor 50/1.2 are all reasonably priced.

The Voigtlander 125 you've got is stellar, I'm not sure it can be
topped. And it sounds like you got a particularly good example of the
usually unimpressive Sigma 24-70.l

Move to LR2 and you'll need PS CS3 less and less ...
Even on the road using my ancient PowerBook G4 (way underpowered for
LR2, really) I found that doing the whole job in LR2, including small
area corrections, etc, meant that I almost never even started up
Photoshop.

Hmmm. The Schneider-Kreuznach (a.k.a. Jos. Schneider Optische Werke)
website seems to indicate that the Samsung cameras have actual Schneider
optics, but maybe it's just make-believe? Some of the zoom lenses to not
appear to have exact Pentax equivalents, though...

And yes, contrary to what some people seem to think, Scheider still
exists as an actual company - it's not just an old brand name that
others stick on their equipment (unlike some others in the photo industry.)

It's also quite wrong. They have no legal basis to object.

As with Peter's sign stating that "by entering you give permission to
appearing in the movie", you have multiple "Fair Use" grounds on which
to defend yourself:

1. You were there BY INVITATION of the writer, one of the participants.

2. Actors are PUBLIC persons, and their PUBLIC activities are, in the
vernacular "fair game". It's a public performance. They only own the
rights to COMMERCIAL exploitation of their persona's.

Fair use allows you to use the product of your own work for self
promotion. You could, legally, even sell prints of the photos you took,
and certainly you can use them to "advertise" yourself as a photographer.

3. They could have asked you to stop while you were taking the photos,
and did not. If the reading took place in a theater, they could have
told you in advance "no photography allowed."

But they didn't, did they?
They didn't stop you from bringing your camera in; they didn't stop you
from taking photographs.

And I'd bet the original invitation from the writer included an implied,
if not explicit, "Would you bring your camera and take some pictures of
actors reading MY PLAY, so I can use them to promote myself?"

I'd have told 'em to SOD OFF!

And while they may hassle your friend, if he complained to me about it,
I'd ask him back, "Why did YOU put me in a situation for someone to
hassle me?"

Consider having some special business cards made just for those
occasions. The word "litigious" should feature prominently on the front,
along with a statement of photographer's rights on the back.

Indeed the Schneider lenses with K-mount only have Schneider name (for
which Samsung proably has to pay a licence).

Samsung will deny it of course. Even the exterior aesthetics is the
same (except a piece of rubber or two). There's more difference
between Tamron and Pentax version of the 18-250 than between Pentax
and Schneider/Samsung versions.

BTW, note that the 16-45 has not been labeled as Schneider but as
Samsung Zoom Lens. Funny heh ? ;)

I'm surprised no one has commented on the apparent circle surrounding
the b'fly. Looks like at one point a circular area was chosen to keep,
and the rest dropped off, leaving a difference in whites. It might be
improved if the magic lasso was used to frame just the b'fly, and the
rest dropped out, with the pattern of the cage put back in as a layer
behind.

Actually -- Bob didn't know I was bringing my camera - it was a tiny bar
near my house... It was the theatre
playwriting group that objected - He was redfaced about asking me not to
display them - beyond what I already had...
I was largely annoyed because I thought they would all be pleased to
have a memento of the occasion - and because
I went to the trouble of doing it when I could have saved myself the
work. I really don't understand it myself but
it does appear to be an Actor's Equity thing. It was a free
performance, and they waived the drink minimum for me
because there was nothing there I could drink at all.

Re: Pentax service question...

2008-09-18 Thread Joseph McAllister
I've had very good experiences with Pentax Service in the past. It's
just this one time.

My K100 D was sent in last year because paint chips from somewhere had
gathered on the focusing screen, some covering the text display. I
might have been able to clean it myself, but: a. I wanted to know
where the paint chips were coming from, and b. I've scratched more
than one focusing screen when removing or installing them on my LX,
PZ, and MX cameras.

The camera came back good as new. They even replaced the dented and
scratched cap on the control dial.

And I've had my LXs into them on several occasions for CLA at which
time they replaced the shutter box for the newer version with out
being asked. Although they did not replace the top cover as I had
asked on one of the LX bodies, but instead painted over the brassed
and dented parts with thick black glossy paint using a small brush.
Looked like I'd done it myself on a bad day. Guess they no longer had
the part, or didn't want to go through the resealing process. And they
repaired two AF280 flash units for me good as new. (for a stiff price)

So I was really just wanting to see if their service quality was going
downhill in general, or was it just this one instance.

50/50, it seems.

Much better than Kodak, who refused to repair my 2 year old LS 443
digital, offering instead to sell me a newer upscale model refurb LS
540 for $20 more than they were selling them as refurbs on their
website. I called them on it, they held firm. Gee - never had a Kodak
camera (nor bought any film) since. (still have plenty of film in the
freezer - god knows when I'll ever use it) :-)

I'm generally uninterested in one-manufacturer-only software...

NX2 might be nice and do a good job. But with 230,000+ photos from a
wide range of cameras in my working archive, it's just not practical
to have specific software for each make and exploit it appropriately.

Without file management capabilities, it's of no use to me at all any
more.

I've yet to find anything in any one-manufacturer-only software
package that I can't achieve with LR aside from specialized effects
that are not of any particular interest to me. It might take more
work, but the difference is purely a matter of degree and experience
in use.

As good as LR is, if you shoot one of the new Nikons it's just about
impossible to beat Capture NX2 for quality. There's a lot of extra
goodies in the D700 (like Picture Controls and the automated CA
removal) that can only be taken advantage of in RAW when used with
NX2. And NX2 does selective editing much better than just about
anything else thanks to Nik Software's Control Point technology.

The downside is NX2 is a little slow due to how it renders edits (it
re-renders the RAW file rather than adjusting the previous render) and
it doesn't offer LR's file management capabilities.

Har! He's fulla shit. But don't inflame the situation - no need. Smile,
nod, walk off, shoot away. Just be careful there isn't a local PD

NX2 is both a dedicated RAW converter for Nikon users and a
non-destructive JPEG and TIFF editor. It's not something I'd recommend
unless you primarily use Nikons, but if you do its quite capable of
functioning as a primary editor after the conversion stage for any
other files. And its selective editing capabilities are far beyond
LR2's.

While I like the idea of integrated file management, RAW conversion
and editing software, the reality of such software has left something
to be desired for me. I really liked LR as a solution when I was
shooting with Pentax kit (where Adobe's ACR engine is the clear winner
for IQ), but it's not up to producing the same quality of output as
CaptureNX2 with Nikon RAW files. I've also found that manual
filesystem organization and any reasonable photo browser works better
than LR catalogs for my uses. And while I don't have 230,000 images in
my library, the 40,000+ I do have are fairly significant.

NX2 is a little unique in being a true non-destructive JPEG and TIFF
editor that's also a Nikon-specific RAW converter, the latter only
really matters due to the support for CA removal and Picture Controls
(the High ISO NR is a lot better than LR1, but I can't compare to LR2
as I don't have enough experience with the latter). Most other
manufacturer software is far less capable (PhaseOne's Capture One
packages being the major exception as it's also marketed as a
multi-format RAW converter with robust batch capabilities).

Obviously...

I'm willing to take Scheider's word for it when they claim to have done
more than just licensing the name, though. But what they are actually
saying, is that some of the Samsung compacts have lenses developed by
Schneider-Kreuznach, and that "many of" the Samsung SLR lenses were
"developed in cooperation with Schneider-Kreuznach." They don't say
which of the lenses they are talking about, of course, or how many
exactly "many of" means, but it seems quite easy to point out to or
three models for which there are no obvious Pentax equivalent. But
actually, none of these seem to be listed any more on the Samsung site...

Same goes for the 18-250 and "new" 18-55, actually...

BTW, do you happen to know if the Scheider/Samsung versions of Pentax

Ann, you were indoors in a controlled environment. Outdoors it's a
different matter. As a former, (very former), member of the working
press, I know just what that difference is and I really don't care what
a Jr. Assistant Adjunct Producer thinks. (I used to much more tactful

tried honey, in this case I used acid). By the way, being inside
wouldn't have stopped me from trying to take the pictures, I would just
have been more contrite if told not to.

Samsung the conglomerate owns Schneider I think. I saw something about
it when Pentax & Samsung first announced their joint development deal
for sensors back when Sony had everyone by the balls & was squeezing
everything they could out of it.

I remember a reference to Samsung bringing their own optical experience
to the table through their Schneider subsidiary in addition to their
background in chip making.

Rubiks' Cubes (assorted)

2008-09-18 Thread John Francis

Here's a selection of Rubik's cubes:

http://panix.com/~johnf/temp/rubiks.jpg

The one in the front is easy enough even for Cotty :-)

The others are all the ones that are "interesting" from a
mathematical standpoint. Larger cubes offer no additional
challenge - if you can solve a 5x5x5 you can solve any size.

Note that on the 4x4x4 cube I've added modifications to
differentate the four inner cubelets on each face. This
doesn't really make it any harder to solve; it just means
the solution takes a little longer.
It would be possible to modify a 5x5x5 in the same way, but
I haven't bothered to do that (and I only have one 5x5x5).

If you're not particularly familiar with LR2 as you stated, how can
you assert that? And if it can't do everything that Photoshop can do,
why would one have both? Unless you were dealing with Nikon RAW files
specifically, of course. I do occasionally need Photoshop for some
kinds of work that I haven't seen *any* other software do efficiently.

But if you like NX2 and it works for you, your life is good. :-)

Most restaurants around here (Raleigh, NC) do not allow smoking. The few
that still do have a separate section.

Tobacco is still the number one money crop in NC, but it's dying out.
The quasi-federal organization that used to control Tobacco production
is no more, and more of today's tobacco is imported from overseas. North
Carolina farmers can't compete with cheap third world production.

Nor is Marijuana second. That honor goes to peanuts & soybeans depending
on who has the better harvest in any given year. Most of North
Carolina's peanut and soybean production is used for oil production.

And NON-crop farm products - hogs, turkeys & chicken all out-strip
peanuts & soybeans, so marijuana comes in sixth or seventh place. And
that's only because a very little bit of pot sells for a whole lot of
money.

Tobacco got to be top cash crop selling $1.60 to $2.00 per pound to the
farmer. You could produce 2500 pounds per acre in a good year. Tobacco
costs about $1.50 a pound to produce no matter what kind of year it is,
so when prices were low farmers didn't do so good.

The average NC farmer had a crop allotment of 50 - 75 acres for tobacco
on maybe a 100 - 200 acre farm. The allotment was all the tobacco the
farmer was permitted to plant, and would allow him to sell a certain
number of pounds per acre, based on the previous year's crop. So, if he
had a good year, and got better than expected yield, he had excess
tobacco he couldn't sell, had to carry over to another year AND saw his
poundage cut back the next year. Plus, he had to store the unsold
tobacco where it wouldn't rot.

Fifty acres @ 2500 pounds of $1.90/pound leaf gives an income of about
$56,000 after paying the production loans, and that's BEFORE taxes. That
paid the bills. Soybeans & peanuts ... corn for animal feed gave a
little fall-back for the years when tobacco didn't do so good.

It's not easy work either.

RE: Photographer harassed by unidentified Ass. Producer.

Flash photography is not allowed on the London Underground, and there
are signs all over saying so. When people take flash photos on the
platforms they are told off by a public announcement read by Stern
Father Voice (the same chap who often asks Inspector Sands to report
to the Control Room).

There are good reasons for it being disallowed, amongst which are that
people are a bit nervous about bombs on the tube; it is also
apparently very dazzling for the train drivers.

Non-flash photography is ok though.

Other than not returining phone calls, same as Nikons service, the
Toronto group has been pretty good, so far.

Fixed my FA 70-210 after i had a huge fall on a dock a few years ago,
I thought it was toast, but they saved it.

Took several tries at the K10D and DA F 50 but they got it. I only
spent $36 on postage :-)

I just wish these places would return calls. I'm sure they are busy,
and so was i when i was in an office environ, but if i failed to
return a call the day it was recieved, i heard about it.

I've used LR2 enough to get a good idea of the how capable the
selective editing controls were (A very nice upgrade over LR1, but not
nearly as capable as NX2 or PS). I didn't compare the high ISO NR when
I was doing so.

While CaptureNX2 can't do many things PS can do, it can do some very
interesting things with selective editing that PS can't do unless you
buy one of the Nik plugins (which cost more than NX2 does). Nik's
Control Point system is very, very Nifty and makes a number of
selective edits far less painful than they would be with layer masks
or lassos.

I still have to use PS for some things, most notably the clone stamp.
(I am in fact using CaptureNX, not NX2, but David would need NX2 as NX
doesn't support the D700 which is why I'm discussing NX2 rather than
NX). But I've found myself using NX for most of my general editing of
film scans and such after prepping the files in PS. At some point soon
I'll be upgrading to NX2, I've only held off due to Nikon's poor
upgrade pricing (the upgrade is only very slightly cheaper than the
full version).

They did for the D3/D300 launch, which is how I got my copy, I would
have stayed with Capture One 4 otherwise (which is what I switched to
after comparing it to LR 1.4.1 with the K10D)

Having used NX extensively for the last 7 months, I understand Nikon's
take on it, it's not just a RAW converter like Canon's DPP or Pentax
Photo Lab, but a full-on editing environment that can almost replace
PS for a photographer. However Nikon should either release a pure RAW
converter and bundle it for free or bit the bullet on the higher-end
bodies and include NX2 in the bundle.
