Thanks Christine,

Apart from selling those 10 books, which won't be so difficult, what do you
(anyone reading this message) think of the book? Can that book be a useful
business card for a show reporter? Are there any "wrong" pictures there? Any
suggestions for improving the result?

Cheers,

Hi all,

I've decided to try & print my first photo book, showing a selection of
my
best 2008 work (apart from two pictures shot in 2007). It will be a
51-page

book + cover including over 60 pictures divided into three sections:
fashion, music, performance. Page size is 20x30cm, 160g glossy paper
with

laminated soft cover.
Total print run will be 20 copies: 10 copies will be gifts for my best
customers (that was my original intent), while 10 more copies will be
offered here on a first booking-first picking basis. I plan to have the
books available for shipping within 15 days from now. Special price 25
Euros

+ shipping. Here are the pictures:

Interested folks, please contact me offline.

Cheers,

Re: My new book is here

2008-11-19 Thread Dario Bonazza

Thanks Frank,

Since one of my main customers is no longer publishing the corporate
magazine I was working for (supplying copy and pictures), I think it can be
a good idea to remind other customers and prospects what I can do for them.
So I put together some of the best pictures I took in 2008 and make the
book, planning to print just 6-7 copies for the purpose (costing me Eur
60-70 each one). In the mean time, the printers are offering a cheaper
soft-cover version of their book and applies a 45% discount when printing
over 10 copies. At this point I decided to print 20 books and use 10 of
them for my purpose and 10 more for sale at cost. This is how the whole
thing took shape.

Apart from selling those 10 books, which won't be so difficult, what do you
(anyone reading this message) think of those pictures? Do you think the book
will be a useful business card for a show reporter?

Comments welcome.

Well, if you actually read the intro you'll find that to be the case.
It's not meant to be a real gymkhana course - just a practice session
dummied up to bear some resemblance to what goes on in gymkhana.

G'day All,

A few of you showed interest in seeing what the Nikon managed to
produce, so here are 28 of the approximately 500 images I came away
with that day:

...and here is a pano I made with the D700 & 20mm f2.8 (~180kb)

All but one of these were shot using the D700& Nikon AF-S 70-200mm
f2.8 VR. Image 4994 was made using the AF-D 24mm f2.8 & polarising
filter.

Due to the lack of "pulling" power of the 200mm, I used this setup
more for perving...err...environmental shots

;-)

BTW, the 5th shot in the gallery is of Western Australia's fauna
emblem the black swan.

Any questions & all comments welcome.

Cheers,

Dave

Stewart used to show up at Ford's Dearborn test track and drive the
handling course with a large salad bowl looking dish (with gently curving
sides) attached to the hood with a small ball in it. He'd then proceed to
lap the track at speed without ever having having the ball come out of the
dish - an indication of how smooth he drove.
He'd also modulate the brakes on a complete stop so that it was impossible
to see the nose dive & recover.

ok, Confusing as hell naming. I never got into the program exposure

or owned any of these A type bodies. I was a dyed in the wool 80's

because of
the lack of a M42 DSLR really. If somebody had made a M42 DSLR,

Gymkhana may have changed a lot since I last went to one, because this

That water trick is also the setup for Initial D, the japanese
animated series and graphic novel series about illegal backroads
racing that is responsible for much of the popularity of drifting
today. The main character had spent a couple of years delivering Tofu

spill it. Unbeknownst to the main character, his dad had been a famous

RE: ANY M42 DSLR rumors (yet)?

2008-11-19 Thread JC OConnell
Pentax had semi-auto and auto apeture lenses even before the spotmatic
(around 1960). Pentax only switched to M42 about 3 years earlier.
So restated, you are going back to the stone ages in working mode
by using a fully manual diaphram in 2008.

Compose BEFORE stopping down? Impossible. Focus before stopping
down yes, but you have to stop down before you are ready to shoot
so the final composition is always stopped down (read DARK).
SUCKS bigtime. I positively hate it. Otherwise with auto-M42
its fine. Focus, compose, and shoot WIDE OPEN and the automatic
aperture takes care of stopping down only for the exposure,
thats great. Full Manual aperture? , nope. Anti-great.

Regarding M42 lens features, the VAST VAST majority of them
have auto aperture feature. Only a small percentage of them
are semi auto (very very rare), full manual (rare) or preset (scarce).
Why? Because auto aperture was developed well before M42 even became
popular with Pentax in the early '60's. Even the really el cheapo M42
lenses had
preset aperture which is far more ergonomic than the full
manual mode you have to endure with a DSLR/adapter combo in 2008 on
Pentax or Canon Eos bodies.

To each his own, but after using auto M42 lenses for decades with film
bodies, I know how easy they can be to work with, VERY EASY, but
not the todays adapter "solutions". AWKWARD is an understatement.

I can give up metering, autoexposure, autofocus, etc, no problem.
but auto aperture functioning is just too important to give up for
everyday
use for me.

Which is why once composes before stopping down. Works pretty darn well.
Especially since many M42 lenses were actually designed to work that way
(Said aperture stop-down plate you're complaining about didn't appear
until M42 mount was more that 16 years old and many lenses never
supported it anyways).

If 3 more people buy on print each (the 5 x 7's are only $10) from any
gallery
on my smugmug site and order the prints before the end of the month I'll
have made enough

to get a check from them in December

That is apart from the cafepress calendar printing... which I really
don't expect many if any of

The Paris gallery is here:

Well, you're welcome to think it's a fatal loss, but there's plenty of
people off happily working with that loss without a fuss. Including
myself (Although not with M42 lenses at the moment as I don't
currently have any. CZ, F and Mamiya M645 lenses only right now)

To rephrase that, I might be willing to use a M42 on a PK or EOS
body manually once in a while with an occasional Fisheye, 15mm,
or 1000mm or something, but for everyday use, NO WAY. Manual aperture
mode of working is just unacceptably slow and annoying and error
prone (composing with the aperture closed).

Which is true primarily because of Canon shooters looking for good,
inexpensive primes (And to a greatly lesser extent the same among
Pentax, Olympus/Panasonic and Sony shooters). M42 costs are still a
fraction of the cost of similar Canon lenses and the M42 lenses are
often a fair bit better than some of said Canon lenses (or in the case
of 50's, faster AND better).

There's a much smaller market for an M42 DSLR than there is for M42
lenses _because_ those lenses are easily adapted to so many mounts with
a fairly small loss in functionality.

The primary market for Manual Focus lenses in mounts other than K and F
are Canon shooters. And there's enough of them to seriously drive up
prices of desirable lenses (Go price a MC Rokkor 58mm f1.2 or a Zeiss
21mm f2.8 Distagon vs what they were 3 years ago). And M42 is one of the
two mounts almost every Alt-lens shooter on Canon starts with (the other
being F mount).

I've been trying to round up a bunch of my old Navy buddies for the

missions.
We were talking a few weeks ago and he described the B-25 he flew, a J
model with the solid nose and 8 machine guns as opposed to the clear
nosed versions.
He even described the nose that had a Wolf's head with barred teeth,
as their squadron was called the "Wolf Pack." I went on the web
looking for models of the J version. Only one was ever made and was
pretty hard to find, but luckily I found one here in Orlando at the
local Camera and Hobby store.
I just finished it today and tonight I took it to him at our Wed night
"Aviation Group" meeting. He was in tears as he looked it over
closely. He said that it was from the same squadron as his, the 38th

Re: So you think you can drive?

2008-11-19 Thread Joseph McAllister
In my experience driving Porsches in Autocross (Gymkhana) and on the
track, as Ken said, the least tire spin/skid the better. Autocross and
road racing is all about cornering to maintain the fastest speed
coming out of the corner, fastest acceleration to the next corner,
best no-skid braking (but not too much) and easeing back on the gas
before you get to the apex.

The other secret I'd pass on to newcomers is: Relax. Breathe, Don't
TRY to go fast. Be as smooth as you can at all times. Never jerk the
wheel. Never slam on the brakes. If you've got a lot of power, never
tromp on the gas. Ease into everything.

And record your tire pressures before and after every run.

And wear a new approved helmet.

I've been to Bondurant driving school several times & they've always

BTW that doesn't look like any autocross/gymkhana course I've ever

DUH. A M42 mount DSLR would be nothing more than a very cheap PK DSLR
with a M42 mount
slapped on and a simple M42 lens actuator plate instead of a lever to
activate the lens pin. I never suggested
M42 mount DSLR would be for people only using that mount, I for example,
want one in
addition to, not instead of, my PK DSLR.

Yep, and one based almost entirely on a camera they'd been building for
decades. It was nothing more than the bog-standard Cosina SLR with yet
another mount slapped on. Same basic body's been made in K, F, OM, FD,
C/Y and possibly MD mounts. Essentially no development cost for a small
profit.

95%+ of the market for M42 lenses today is users who have a non-Nikon
DSLR and want some cheap and good primes. These users aren't going to
buy a M42 specific DSLR since M42 isn't the only mount they're using.

There's very few people who will buy a DSLR for one old mount, no matter
how many lenses are available on the cheap. And of those few, most of
them will want OM, C/Y or SR/MC/MD mount rather than M42 (especially
since two of those mounts support M42 adaptors).

Nope, the M42 market prices would have fallen way off by now
if the market for them was so small, they havent surprisingly.
It's weird because you would think that most film users
would have abandoned them ( I have ), but the prices still are
holding up on them (at least the good ones). They are going
for more now then they were 5-10 years ago when market was mostly
still film slrs in use.

No, the supply of old M42 lenses is huge. The market for them is small.

If the market was so huge someone would have made a M42 DSLR by now.

And given the rise of the Yen, shrinking DSLR sale profits & general

The closest you will ever get to an M42 dSLR is a K2000/Km with an m42
adaptor.

There is zero chance that any manufacturer would make a low-profit
camera to use no-profit used lenses that have been around for decades,
and which probably won't work well with a digital sensor anyway. There
is such a tiny market for this that I can't see any reputable
manufacturer trying to fill it.

I'm wondering if all that drifting is the fastest way around the
course.

I've been to Bondurant driving school several times & they've always said
that the fastest way around a gymkhana course was with minimum wheel spin.
It's spectacular but not the fastest way.

BTW that doesn't look like any autocross/gymkhana course I've ever seen or

It really is quite cool - incredible, actually. I've seen a bit of
rallying on TV, and I know these guys have amazing car control.

I'm wondering if all that drifting is the fastest way around the
course. Naturally, in parts where ultra-tight 360s are required in
small spaces there's no choice, but there were quite a few wild
four-wheel drifts where I'd have thought that keeping the tires stuck
to the ground would give more control, and therefore better
acceleration and higher cornering speeds.

I'm thinking there's probably a reason that F1 pilots don't drift
around like that (I know it would be impossible with all the
aerodynamic downforce anyway, but they put all those wings on the car
so they ~don't~ drift around, right?).

Cool stuff, nonetheless.

Re: So you think you can drive?

2008-11-19 Thread Doug Franklin

frank theriault wrote:

In general on-pavement racing, no, it's not. It's a lot more visually
and auditorially exciting, but it's usually not the fastest way. In
off-road racing, though, like Paris-Dakar or Baja 1000, it often can be
the fastest way through the course.

Naturally, in parts where ultra-tight 360s are required in
small spaces there's no choice, but there were quite a few wild
four-wheel drifts where I'd have thought that keeping the tires stuck
to the ground would give more control, and therefore better
acceleration and higher cornering speeds.

May or may not give more control (usually does), that's up to the skills
of the driver. But keeping the contact patch "immobile" with respect to
the pavement does improve traction, thus acceleration, braking, and
cornering. For example, when you're braking hard, if you let the wheels
lock up and skid, you're giving up something like 30% of your traction,
and thus your ability to slow down. Obviously the exact amount depends
on a lot of variables, like the tires and their condition. And
"immobile" is in quotation marks because it's not really immobile, it's
just not moving /much/ compared to the pavement.

I'm thinking there's probably a reason that F1 pilots don't drift
around like that (I know it would be impossible with all the
aerodynamic downforce anyway, but they put all those wings on the car
so they ~don't~ drift around, right?).

In F1 road course racing, maximizing traction is the only way to win,
because that allows you to maximize cornering, acceleration, and
braking. And it's not impossible to drift an F1 car around like that,
you just have to do it at low speed. By the time an F1 car hits around
100 mph it's already developing more downforce than its own weight and
could drive on the ceiling of a tunnel if it had good ramps in and out.

In sand, mud, gravel, snow, etc., traction is often so scarce that you
have to resort to other techniques.

Cool stuff, nonetheless.

Drifting is a tire manufacturer's wet dream. You'll notice that tire
manufacturers are the biggest sponsors of all things drifting. I don't
deny their car control skills and all that; it takes a ton of skill to
do competition level drift driving. But it's still an excuse to sell
tires. :-)

NO, they are NOT easily usable. All the so-called

you end up with a very very very un-user friedly

I think you're grossly overestimating the demand for such a camera when
all of those lenses are easily usable with a cheap ($10-20) adaptor on
essentially all non-Nikon DSLR's. Especially since use of those lenses
with an adaptor, particularly on Canon and 4/3rds DSLR's means you can
also use lenses from other mounts, many of which have no equivalent in
M42 mount, particularly fast OM, Contax and Leica lenses.

Man, I would die for a basic M42 DSLR at this point.
All I would need on it was the M42 screw mount, basic stop down metering
a shutter speed dial , a built in flash, and the little pad to activate
the auto aperture M42 lens pin at moment of exposure. No need for AE or
AF(obviously). Even 6-10Mp APS would be better than the nothing we have
at this point.

Anybody heard of any rumors of one yet? With the millions
of great M42 lenses still out there in good working condition, it seems
to me sooner or later somebody will step in and fill the need for this
market. I know you can use M42 lenses (with manual modes on the lens) on
Pentax and Canon DSLRS with adapters but the lack of auto aperture makes
them way to cumbersome, and you cant use auto-only M42 lenses, hence the
need for a true M42 mount DSLR.

Cool stuff, nonetheless.

cheers,
frank

It might have helped if they made a few more of them and/or advertized
them a little more broadly. They made less than 15,000 units and sold
them, occasionally, through a couple of knowledgeable dealers only. No
economies of scale and no marketing means high prices...

I wish nikon would do such a thing. They could easily do it much
cheaper since they could base it on the electronics of a D40 or D60,
which have long ago paid for themselves. The RD-1 is so pricey because
Epson had to amortize the cost of the electronics over relatively few
units.

If it ever happens I will join Cotty at the hat table.

You could try an Olympus E series camera with adapters, of course. Look what
this was shot with:
http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/OldNick/Donna.tif.html

Or you could wait for the Leica S2 to come out and hope that they also do an
M42 adapter. Or give up on dreams of an SLR and go for an RF camera - try a
Leica M8 or Epson R2D2 with adapters.

I think you're grossly overestimating the demand for such a camera
when all of those lenses are easily usable with a cheap ($10-20)
adaptor on essentially all non-Nikon DSLR's. Especially since use of
those lenses with an adaptor, particularly on Canon and 4/3rds DSLR's
means you can also use lenses from other mounts, many of which have no
equivalent in M42 mount, particularly fast OM, Contax and Leica
lenses.

RE: OT - foreign languages on CD

2008-11-19 Thread Bob W
You'll make better progress if you go to a class with a qualified teacher.
I've learned 5 foreign languages in my life to at least moderate levels of
fluency, and I'm also qualified to teach English as a foreign language.
Whenever I've tried to learn from a CD it's been a complete waste of time
and money, and I don't think I've met anyone who's been at all successful
using teach-yourself methods. Maybe RF Burton, but he was a genius.

RE: ANY M42 DSLR rumors (yet)?

2008-11-19 Thread John Celio
The closest you will ever get to an M42 dSLR is a K2000/Km with an m42
adaptor.

There is zero chance that any manufacturer would make a low-profit
camera to use no-profit used lenses that have been around for decades,
and which probably won't work well with a digital sensor anyway. There
is such a tiny market for this that I can't see any reputable
manufacturer trying to fill it.

Man, I would die for a basic M42 DSLR at this point.
All I would need on it was the M42 screw mount, basic stop down metering
a shutter speed dial , a built in flash, and the little
pad to activate the auto aperture M42 lens pin at moment
of exposure. No need for AE or AF(obviously). Even 6-10Mp
APS would be better than the nothing we have at this point.

Anybody heard of any rumors of one yet? With the millions
of great M42 lenses still out there in good working condition,
it seems to me sooner or later somebody will step in
and fill the need for this market. I know you can use M42
lenses (with manual modes on the lens) on Pentax and Canon DSLRS with
adapters but the
lack of auto aperture makes them way to cumbersome, and
you cant use auto-only M42 lenses, hence
the need for a true M42 mount DSLR.

RE: PESO - The Matador Club

2008-11-19 Thread Bob W
I used to go to a place like that when I was a student in Manchester. It was
called The Continental. It wasn't strictly 'public' - you were there by
invitation. To get in you knocked on the door and a trap opened at face
level. The bouncer grunted at you, and you said "I'm a medical student"
whether you were or not, at which point he opened the door and invited you
in. It was a peculiar place, but it was open after 2am, which was highly
unusual in those days (mid 70s).

I think you are grossly underestimating the quantity of
M42 lenses still in existance. They were sold in massive
quantities in the 60's and 70's and were generally well
made and simple. Hint: theyre still out there and alive and well.
The pentax M42s in particular are of very high quality too.

only appeal to a tiny fraction of the market for a regular DSLR.

RE: ANY M42 DSLR rumors (yet)?

2008-11-19 Thread JC OConnell
I still prefer to use nearly all manual although I have had many
auto modes available to me for decades. I dont
like, want, or need AF or AE or Autoflash for what I do.
I would love a basic M42 DSLR because with most
M42 lenses the basics would be all that is possible.
I could probaby get by pretty damn well with just a
shutter speed dial and a hot shoe on a M42 dslr.
Dont forget you can always use the rear LCD as a meter
by taking a test shot.

The whole point of a M42 dslr of course is that it
would have the M42 flange and the auto-aperture
plate so that all M42 lenses could be used and auto
M42 lenses would be supported with the actuator plate
to press the lens pin during exposure. Without the auto aperture
function,
might as well use Pentax K/EOS bodies with M42 adapters
without any auto aperture (ouch, I hate that way of working,
thats why auto aperture was invented in the 1950's).

KMZ, the company that made/makes Zenits etc. muted a couple of basic
DSLR's over the last few years, one was a modular camera that had a
removable back assembly that could be swapped between film or digital,
but this was believed to be an April fools joke. The other, the Zenit
408 was allegedly a serious attempt at a 10mp basic digital SLR, but
sadly that project also seems dead if they had made it, it was
expected to be K mount rather than M42 as later Zenits were/are.

Shame really, I would love a simple match needle or LED DSLR... no
screen, no "modes", just the basics. Set your film speed, W/B, aperture
and shutter speed. Personally I wouldn't want a built in flash, I never
had a problem using an accessory flash with the little look up chart on
the back ;-)

That's a given in a competitive high-performance vehicle;
there's going to be a brake balance adjuster in the cockpit.

For a rally car (which is what this is, effectively) you
need a very different brake balance on tarmac than you do
on mud, gravel, etc.
