It still seems to work. I put my loose camera on the floor of the car in a pocket created in a cushion of canvas bags I use at the grocery store. Stopping should not hurt it any, but a broadside hit from another car would certainly move it around. I used to keep it on the passenger seat (bucket), but sorta hung it from the strap over the head restraint so it could not go anywhere. But one of the dogs now insists on sitting in that seat, ergo the floor location. However! I got out of my car this evening at the dog park, and slung my K20D with grip and DA*60-250 attached over my shoulder and across my chest so I could carry my coffee and walk the dogs on leash to the gate. The coffee was still on top of the car. Just as I let the camera strap drop to my shoulder, I felt a complete loss of weight. Without looking, I reached around behind me and grabbed the falling camera body by the grip indentation with three fingers, preventing the whole lot from crashing to the ground lens first. The strap had backed itself out of the cinch and retaining loop and let go. Fancy that! Took myself a few minutes think about that, and to to re-attach the side that let go, then re-did the other side as well. Not that mine see much use anyway :( I'm actually more scared about losing or damaging the lenses that aren't directly replaceable. I have a number of older lenses that are well and truly out of manufacture... I generally carry everything I need or intend to use, it never really bothers me. I think my main fear is having the kit stolen from say the car, some of those FA primes I have would be hard to find today. The camera bag very rarely leaves me for any length of time unless in a secure location (not the car boot). The only lens that rarely makes it out of the house is the FA* 85/1.4 but I rarely find use for it and it's a relatively big chunk of glass for what it is. All my currently used lenses except the DA 16-50 have soft cases and remain in the cases even when in the camera bag to prevent damage. I find the Pentax cases easy to access from the top with little loss of time when shooting. The Tamron 90mm has it's draw string pouch, as does the 70mm Limited and the Tc's I use. The Sigma 24mm is in a Pentax S70-70 case, it fits just fine, lens hoods for the 24, 28 and 50 live in the bags front pocket. I take care of the equipment but regard everything as tools and they get used as such. Regards. Well, I took FA 43 with me to Prague and wiped it off the tax registration counter with one clean sweep of my hand. Had to buy a brand new one. OTOH, I took DA 21, FA 43 and FA 77 on a number of trips (except that to Prague of course) with me and they came back safely. Don't know about your condition though ;-). Mine is slightly different line up: DA 21/3.2 limited FA 31/1.8 limited FA 43/1.9 limited A 50/1.2 (practically unlimited, wonder of a lens, truly) FA 77/1.8 limited FA 100/3.5 macro Used only when zoom is necessary: Tamron 28-75/2.8 (letter salad omitted for brevity) Soon to arrive (mostly for my daughter Galia) FA 50/1.4 I usually take with me just one lens, or at most two if I am not exactly sure what I am going to do. I should have mentioned, this 7 lens kit is the anything and everything kit, so I can shoot whatever with the best possible quality. If I know exactly what I am going to do and its limited to only say, near the wide to normal end, I might carry the 18,20,24,28,35mm only. Well, you get the point. The 7 mentioned were just the widest possible range with the most quality, and kept total lenses to a reasonable number. FWIW, if I could only carry/use one prime for lightness and readyness, it would be a 28mm F3.5 SMCK or possibly the 24mm F3.5 SMCK lens but that's another subject matter. -- J.C. Thank you to everyone who gave me their thoughts. It seems I am well in the minority (I am a scared army of one) and the consensus is that I should stop being such a pussy and just leave the camera and Ltds in the passenger seat and not worry about using the lenses outdoors. :-) I have home insurance and the lenses are registered with them, although I'm pretty sure they cover purchase cost, not replacement value. And I think that's where my fear comes from. Most of my lenses were bought used, and for the new ones I waited patiently for months to find bargains. I couldn't afford a new 77 Ltd right now if I had to buy one :-( But lenses *are* tools, and they need to be used, and there is no point owning great glass if I can't enjoy it, especially after the sacrifices I've had to make in order to buy it. I'm off paintballing right now, so I think I'll duct tape my K10D and 31 Ltd to my rifle and just enjoy a couple hours of splattering paint :-) Cheers, --M. In an attempt to steer the bull back onto the righteous path of Pentax talk... I saw another comparison a few weeks ago: http://falklumo.blogspot.com/2009/06/comparative-noise-study-k-7-vs-k20d.html and was surprised that Falk concluded the K20D had slightly better high ISO noise. I say surprised because I looked at the images he posted and I concluded that I liked the K-7's performance better. Looking at Max's pics Joe linked to, I find the K-7 shows better control of the luminance noise at the expense of chroma noise. So better details for the K-7 at the expense of magenta blotches. Does the K-7 have adjustable NR? I seem to remember it did. If so, then there is probably a setting (mid or high NR) on the K-7 that will give you images like those out of the K20D. As somebody who does a lot of BW, I always want higher resolution at high ISOs rather than controlled chroma noise that kills details (like I've seen on the Nikon D80 at high NR). But back to the comparison; Like Jostein, I also see the K20D shots are underexposed compared to the K-7. If all exposure values on-camera were equal, this means the K-7 boosts the signal more than the K20D. I would like to say this means it converts photons to electrons more efficiently, but I don't think the chroma noise would support this hypothesis. Another concern is that these images show different behaviour in the K-7 when compared to those by Falk (in the link I posted above). The chroma noise is much better controlled in Falk's camera, and while his K-7 also exposes a bit brighter than the K20D, the difference is much less than in Max's test. Anyone care to comment whether they see the same I do? But more importantly: Do we really care? After all, the K-7 is new and cool, and chicks dig it. The first lens to be considered is of course the 600. Weighing what it does. That's probably something you can change. All my camera gear is explicitly listed on my homeowners insurance, covered for all risks at replacement cost. Personally I think it's a good idea to have *everything* on your home insurance at replacement cost. Ideally you'll never have to claim, but if you do the last thing you want to is bicker about the price. On Pentax digital, you are most likely going to get a lot more use out of a 135,200, or 300, than the 400. 400mm is just very very long on digital and will rarely be needed. -- J.C. Auto ISO
Auto ISO is one of the features added to my DS with the last update. I switched it in this afternoon while taking more bird pictures. Aside from the discovery that I am not as fast as a hummingbird, I could not discern what AUTO ISO added to the picture equation. Is there a discussion of this feature somewhere that explains what is is how it operates? For instance, does it start at the last set ISO level and move up or down based on some ideal setting of aperture and speed. Does it require that I select one of the modes to make it work. This would be the most logical to me. I stand by what I said, the *FURTHER** you get away from normal, the less often you need it. Sure, ultrawides and ultrateles have their uses on occasion, but not nearly as often as moderate wides and teles. I didn't mean to imply the normal lens is the best or most useful, its just the further and further you get away from normal, the less often its going be what you need. My post was made in the context of a 600mm lens on digital, while maybe useful for birds, its just going to be too long for nearly everything else. That's a very specialty focal length. -- J.C. My understanding (and this could be completely wrong) is that Auto ISO allows the camera to adjust the ISO to suit the lighting conditions. So, if you were shooting in Av mode and set an aperture that would give a shutter speed too low for hand holding, the ISO would be increased to achieve an acceptable shutter speed (or as high a speed as possible). At least that's how it seems to work with the K200D. With the 200D (and I assume the other K series bodies), you can limit the range over which the camera is allowed to increase the ISO. That doesn't seem possible on the DS, so I assume (a lot of assumptions here!) that the camera can adjust the ISO right up to 3200 with the AUTO setting, if necessary. one thing I don't understand here, and that is that taking a lot of people pictures would incur MORE use of a longer lens like 100mm, not the shorter ones. Normal and wide lenses generally are no-no's for people photos. Heck I didn't list my full kit, just my most used prime lenses. I have three kits, two made up primarily of zooms or varifocals, and one that is basicly the 24 43 and 85 with additions or replacements depending on the conditions I expect to encounter. In reflecting on the feature, it seemed to me that something had to be fixed, and so at the very minimum it would only work in the picture modes, and probably in the Av and Ty modes, but I couldn't find a way to do an in cameras test. Going into RAW processing I could see what ISO level was used but I haven't done that as yet. Ah hah..After some reflection, I went out and set the ISO to Auto and took a picture. If you bring the picture back to the screen for review and hit the INFO button twice, the shot parameters are shown. In this case it was ISO 800 and I was in Av mode. In flower mode, it set the ISO to 1600 so it appears that the aperture and speed are set and the AUTO ISO moves the ISO setting to make it happen. Interesting. I can see why you would want to set a usable range of ISO speeds if you were going to use this feature as it is not displayed in the eyepiece. I switched it in this afternoon while taking more bird pictures. Aside from the discovery that I am not as fast as a hummingbird, I could not discern what AUTO ISO added to the picture equation. Is there a discussion of this feature somewhere that explains what is is how it operates? For instance, does it start at the last set ISO level and move up or down based on some ideal setting of aperture and speed. Does it require that I select one of the modes to make it work. This would be the most logical to me. Is this a feature I can ignore if not with impunity at least with some peace of mind? -- Actually I wasn't aware that Auto had been added to the *ist DS (my second camera), so thanks for posting. My understanding (and this could be completely wrong) is that Auto ISO allows the camera to adjust the ISO to suit the lighting conditions. So, if you were shooting in Av mode and set an aperture that would give a shutter speed too low for hand holding, the ISO would be increased to achieve an acceptable shutter speed (or as high a speed as possible). At least that's how it seems to work with the K200D. With the 200D (and I assume the other K series bodies), you can limit the range over which the camera is allowed to increase the ISO. That doesn't seem possible on the DS, so I assume (a lot of assumptions here!) that the camera can adjust the ISO right up to 3200 with the AUTO setting, if necessary. I have this problem now. I have: DA14 DA40 FA10 1.4 A50 2.8 macro FA 100 2.8 macro FA125 2.8 K 300 4 I desperately need some prime lenses between 14 an 40. The 40 is bit too long in many cases and need a shorter normal. I often use the FA20-35 but I would like to get the DA21 and something in the low to mid 30's. one good results was that the FA 135 suddenly became a most useful lens with the DX format. I seem to be peculiar with respect to this principle.
If I change to the 2009 directory, which has everything by month and
then day directories in it, I can use:

sort -u lengths unique_lengths
gets me the individual focal lengths; there are 25, ranging from 0

50, etc.), and some column tweaking:

Whatever I am doing, I'm not following the further from normal the less
use rule.
My post was made in the context of a 600mm lens on digital, while
maybe useful for birds, its just going to be too long for nearly
everything else. That's a very specialty focal length.
Oh, I agree, but I am coming to think that pretty much everybody is a
speciality photographer.

GESO - Mississauga Future Star 2009
I did a little volunteer work at the end of May for a local arts group by shooting performers competing to become the Mississauga Future Star 2009 at the Clarke Hall in Port Credit, Ontario. This particular event was the second-last round, reducing the field down from 20. I'm back
PDML came back on line for me at about the same time as Ann has said it came on for her, and we went out at approximately the same time as well. Coincidence? We don't use the same ISP. Very strange. Of course I badgered comcast relentlessly, and they admitted that PDML was blocked. For a while they couldn't seem to fix it. More strangeness. But I'm pleased to be back. Another thing I noticed on those two galleries is that the images in On the Road Again come up with a drop down Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down panel on the top right but that doesn't appear on the images in New York, New York. Paul In my case I tried to report the problem to the on-line help center and after writing out the whole thing I got a message that said they couldn't process it and I should call So when I called Time Warner and got the Road Runner email line there was the experiencing a high volume of calls message...
