Funny, I was thinking that this was exactly where things were going if
you want to optimize registration distance for each lens. The
difference being that I was figuring that they'd do it first at the
high end of the market, optimizing a $2,000 body for a $15,000 lens.

I've been thinking for some time of a modular camera system allowing you to
interchange the lenses, the sensors units and the viewfinders independently.
A fast contrast-detect AF system (a la Panasonic) would solve any tolerance
problem in positioning the interchangeable sensor units and the lenses.

RE: KR on Color Management

2009-11-10 Thread Bob W
KR has quite a good sense of humour and he's right about quite few things
although he doesn't always write well enough for his message to be clear. If
you interpret his article as saying you don't need to know about colour
management, I think he's basically correct. From camera to computer to
printer / screen you don't need to do any manual colour management if
everything uses profiles. You don't even need to calibrate your monitor if
you trust the profiles.

Here's an example of his humour:

I got a new phone this weekend with a 5mp camera - that's the same number as
my Olympus E-1. The pictures are excessively warm, but in an emergency
they'd do.

It's an upgrade of my old phone and runs Windows Mobile which is ok. I
looked at some Android phones but they were very clunky about synchronising
with Outlook on my PC, which is a very important requirement for me.

I looked at iPhones too, but they're too big. I might get one next time
round when they come down to a reasonable size. At the moment only someone
of Cotty's size should be allowed to have one.

It was about quarter of three, I was 50-100m down the road, just
finishing up, when I noticed a cop car parked next to my car. He had
stopped to make sure that it hadn't been abandoned. The laptop on the

Would you like to see them?
OK.

We got to my camera just as the bracketed set was finishing up, and I
put one of the shots on the display.

"Cool!"

I've narrowed the myriad of bracketed shots from that session down to
14, I still have some work to do:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622649186149/

Unfortunately, there seems to be a bit of dust on the sensor, which
I've cropped out in a couple of them:

That is the best story I've read in a while. Many times, while adding

The whole place is kind of scary in that burning man goes to church

Re: MGESO - Such a lot of stuff! (performance pics)

2009-11-10 Thread Dario Bonazza

Thanks Bob,

Sometimes dancers are performing for the public, other times they are
showing their new works to a jury, hoping to win some prize and a better
possibility to go ahead with the project. In the latter case, there is a big
problem of shutter/mirror noise during the performances. The quiet K-7 was
of great help there.

I read somewhere that these have the same problem that the 'old' NiMHs, this
is, the loose their charge in few days/weeks of no use.

This may not be a problem for planned shotting situations (trips,
assignments,...), but I much prefer the Eneloop type behaviour, when you can
just take the camera and know that you'll be able to shoot (and also know that
your spare charged betteries are still charged). Just like my K20D ones.

it raises all sorts of concerns, i know, but i know someone who has used

You need a special kind of release paper to go between inkjet prints and
the dry mount press or it messes up the ink. With darkroom prints you
can use regular kraft paper.

The type I'm familiar with is made by Bienfang and costs about $45 USD
for a 26" by 15' roll - kind of expensive when you only really need
about 3' off the roll. You can use the same piece over and over again.

De: John Sessoms I was not impressed with
the Eneloops. Other than not having to pre-charge them - a one
time bonus, they didn't offer any additional practical
performance advantage over the Duracell or Energizer
rechargeables and that at the cost of having to carry an
additional special charger that I couldn't use for my other
rechargeable batteries.

I always thought that the Eneloops (and their later imitations)
competitive advantage was that they keep the charge for months
instead of the few weeks (if you are lucky) that you get from regular
NiMHs (although these last longer in an intesive shooting session).
That's why they can be sold charged...

That's why I call selling them charged a "one time bonus".

I don't need them to hold a charge while they sit for months. I needed
something to power the camera that would give me a reasonable number of
shots before having to be replaced.

None of the NiMh batteries would do that, including the Eneloops.

I don't blame the batteries for not having enough power, and I don't
blame Pentax for making a camera that needs more power than these
batteries can provide.

I just use the batteries that work best for me in that camera.

Hmmm.
"Pentax has struggled to achieve widespread distribution of its full
product range in some European markets in recent years."
That might be due to it not supplying UK retailers with the product line.

"PENTAX is committed to its existing trade partners and will continue to
offer its full support in this respect."
None in the UK(AFAIK) at the present time.

"The PENTAX Europe store is expected to launch in 2009."
Better get a shuffle on, then.

By the way: I am unlikely to buy anything I cannot have a play with
previously. I am also likely to be unhappy with any purchase that shows
signs of anyone else having had a play. Not sure how you are going to
solve that conundrum, with not having any high street players.

Yep if so, :(
I suppose we'll need more reports with time...
At least they work better with devices needing 1.5 compared to the 1.2V NiMH.

Odd. I use the same charger for my Eneloops as I use for all my other
rechargeable NiMHs (Energiser, Rayovac, ARs, etc. - both AA & AAAs);
a Maha charger I bought from Thomas Distributing. I'm sure the other
good chargers (Lacie, etc.) can handle tmem all too.

And I'm not saying otherwise. Sanyo does.

Page 16:

"Is it Possible to Charge eneloop with
Other Manufacturers’ Chargers?"

"No, we do not recommend it. Neither the construction
nor the characteristics of both battery and charger are
the same. Accordingly, we do not recommend that other
manufacturers’ batteries be charged with Sanyo chargers."

Hence the "having to carry an additional special charger".
I consider that a disadvantage not offset by them being sold pre-charged.

As I said in another thread:
"This may not be a problem for planned shotting situations (trips,
assignments,...), but I much prefer the Eneloop type behaviour, when
you can just take the camera and know that you'll be able to shoot (and
also know that your spare charged betteries are still charged). Just
like my K20D ones."

But I agree in that this depends greatly on the use that one makes of the
camera.
In my case, I like the idea of having always a spare charged battery in the
camera case, so I know that I won't run out of power, and I don't want to worry
about having to charge all batteries (in-use and spare) every time I want to
grab the camera

...but wait, we don't need to choose!!!
We can have some eneloops type always ready just in case and also some powerful
'regular NiMHs' for those planned intesive shooting days...that's the advantage
of inexpensive batteries !

Now, if only the K-x could handle them...

Jaume

Batteries for *ist-D and other Pentax cameras that take AA or CR-V3

2009-11-10 Thread John Sessoms
Thought I'd open this in a fresh thread specifically about batteries for
earlier Pentax DSLRs.

I got an idea from the discussion of NiMH and Lithium AA batteries in
the other thread, and wanted to follow up on it.

There are no Lithium Ion AA batteries, but the *ist-D can also use CR-V3
batteries and those ARE available as Litium Ion rechargeables. Plus,
they're 3V(+) rather than the 2.5V(-) you get with a pair of NiMH AAs.

Has anyone used these? The only drawback I foresee is there doesn't seem
to be a charger that can do 2 of these at once.

Even better would be a charger that could do 4 at once, since the
*ist-D/BG-1 takes 4 of them is you load it with CR-V3s.

RE: But what are you taking pictures for?

2009-11-10 Thread John Sessoms

From: Larry Colen

I was having so much fun taking pictures on my drive home, that by
1:30 or so I was still fifty miles south of Los Bano and had to pull
over for a nap. After my nap, while I was adding nitrates to the soil,
I noticed how cool Orion looked juxtaposed with a telephone
pole. After I got some frames of that, a couple other things caught my
eye.

It was about quarter of three, I was 50-100m down the road, just
finishing up, when I noticed a cop car parked next to my car. He had
stopped to make sure that it hadn't been abandoned. The laptop on the
seat assured him of that. He was, however, utterly perplexed at what
someone was doing, at that time of night, in the suburbs of nowhere,
taking pictures. The phrase "But what are you taking pictures *for*?"
kept coming up.

I asked him if he ever took pictures just because they were pretty?
Nope.
Do you paint?
Nope.
Make music?
Nope.

Would you like to see them?
OK.

We got to my camera just as the bracketed set was finishing up, and I
put one of the shots on the display.

"Cool!"

Sometimes that's the only way to explain what you're doing in a way they
can understand; just show 'em the picture.

The first two are the best for me.

My friend uses CR-V3 rechargeables in his *ist-DL and is very happy with them.
They last a lot and it seems that they do not loose their charge.

Unfortunately, I think that Pentax has physically prevented the K-x from using
them (maybe because there were reports about some of them that had a higher
voltage and could damage the camera IIRC)

You might look into a USB 2.0 complant expansion card, (and the proper
drivers), that should speed up your processing. On second thought not
just compliant, I have an HP printer with built in card slots that's 2.0
compliant, but transfers data at 1.1 speeds. You need one that's
actually fully 2.0. However I don't think that there's any new

I have been cheerfully ignoring that recommendation (as I didn't even

I would propose you do the same and ignore the "please oh please use

They just don't want to be held responsible if you charge 'em with

It strikes me as a very well composed image and I appreciate it for

Pentax officially advised against them due to their higher voltage,
though with the DC-DC switching regulators in modern electronics I
seriously doubt there would be any issues. Probably just a legal CYA
tactic, IMO.

I only knew one person who used them and he did so without ever having
any problems. And he was a Pentax rep. :)

Because Sigma are too cheap to actually *license* the LensID capability

While the notion of a "unit interchangeable" camera like the GXR is
interesting, technically, I'm not at all interested in it. I can only
imagine the price of premium lens-sensor units, the difficulties in
calibration across different lenses, etc.

And, of course, there will be no ability to use anyone else's lenses
at all. No adaptation of existing FourThirds lenses, Pentax lenses,
nothing. You use whatever and exactly what "lens unit" offerings the
manufacturer makes available.

Might be a nice system if it supports exactly what you want. And (for
US photographers) if Ricoh re-institutes their sales/service/support
network here that they eliminated almost a decade ago.

But it's certainly not for me.

I think it might be for me.

I'd get just one fast prime and leave it at that. I think most people
will get just one lens. I look at this as not an interchangeable-lens

RE: Ricoh GXR interchanges electronics together with lenses!

In theory I guess you could also make an interchangeable sensor with a lens
mount on it. Or someone else could.

I think it might be for me.

I'd get just one fast prime and leave it at that. I think most people
will get just one lens. I look at this as not an interchangeable-lens
camera but at a customizable-fixed-lens camera.

In the full-sized images, I could also see a bit of a "grid" pattern
on a couple of the images (well, the two I looked at in full-sized
mode). Nice detail and exposure, but that grid look would be a
bummer if it's there all the time. Anyone else notice that?

I like it. I think it would be even better if the line of the hull continued
to the very bottom - otherwise it feels slightly incomplete.

It reminds me of Salgado's shots of the ship-breaking yards in India and
Bangladesh.

Yep, she's shooting classic Pentax whilst the movie is being captured
on Canon DSLR ;-)

Either the Germans were very good housekeepers or we're not seeing
~all~ of the German trenches. B&W images of Allied trenches seem
overwhelmingly to feature mud, muck and mire. The German trenches
also seem to have much more wooden shoring than photos that I've seen
of Allied trenches.

A very interesting set of photos, and very timely posting on your part. Thanks.

I think it's mostly to do with ambient artificial light, I've done
plenty of exposures under moonlight on the sunny setting which had
perfect WB.

Re: Re: K-x body, anyone have any experiences to pass on?

2009-11-10 Thread Dragan Grašič

Is anyone in this group actually using the K-x?

Okay, there seems to be a battery issue with the K-x, but for me it
hasn't been the limiting factor to dig deeper into the camera. After I
turned off the Distortion correction & Lateral chromatic aberration
correction the camera is just as snappy as K20 (or even a bit more). I
always shoot in RAW+ with Highlight correction (former D-range) and
Shadow correction on.

I was expecting much from the high ISO settings and I was not
disappointed: the results are beyond anything I have seen from Pentax so
far, noise levels and shadow detail in low light are just about superb.
So far I have been shooting with the DA 2,8/25mm Limited Macro and DA
2,4/70mm Limited. Both lenses snap faster and more accurately into focus
as when they are used on K20.

I deduce that K-x will open up a completely new chapter of available
light photography for Pentax-shooters...

cheers,
dragan

ps.
I am mostly on lithium power. Just to satisfy my curiosity I tried
Eneloops and they worked fine. I even tried some semi-dry NiMh piles
from Sony, first the camera wouldn't power on - I guess this is the
issue when you change batteries and turn power on instantly. On the
second try the camera powered on with the battery indicator red. On the
third try the battery level went orange and the camera worked fine. I
will report more about the battery issue as I get more mileage.
