Judge by yourself these comparison shots for K-20D and K-x (136 MB file to

Warning: serious risk of camera buying can result from seeing those pics!

I believe the decrease in pixel count is negligible in practical use, while
the improvement in high-ISO performance is so evident one could think of
comparing APS to FF. And remember the K-7 high-ISO performance has not
improved over the K20D, given the extra noise caused by the four-channel
structure and higher transfer rate of the K-7.

Gunnedah bills itself as the Koala Capital of the World.

I think the blue looks more natural. What did you do to change the colours?
If you set the white point off the surf you'd probably get something sort of
natural, but it wouldn't necessarily look natural - our brains have certain

Vuescan is what I used, but I just got it and am not really familiar with it

through the manual and tried to find a setting for it, but I couldn't figure it
out. The previews show positives, but the final scans were negatives. I
thought that maybe since it was a raw output that Vuescan wouldn't change it.

That's atrange. I scan BW negatives to from time to time, using TIFF as
output format, and they show up as positive both in the preview and
output. I select BW Negative for the input format and 8-bit or 16-bit
grayscale file format (in the Output tab.) Are you sure you've tried
straight TIFF output, as opposed to DNG/raw? Which I've never tried, but
I'm assuming it means there is no inversion or other processing.

Note that I do see weird inconsistencies between the preview and scan

Re: OT Thumbnails and the Mac (take2) (Gaetan Beauchamp)

2009-12-31 Thread Gaëtan Beauchamp
Hello everyone.
I did make a mistake in the previous post when I said that iPhoto made a
mistake about my camera. I had forgot that I did use the K20D also. So no
mistake there. No way to change the metadata about the camera who took the
picture. Am I right?
What could you do about those metadata and how? Is there someone on the list
who knows ?
But about the thumbnails and the PEF, there is always Atomicview:
http://www.antzero.com/antweb/?lang=enm=0p=0
who IMHO is worth of a try.
The problem here is that the K7 PEF are not yet recognized as thumbnails in OS
X. Apple make some updates but not for the K-7. How long will we have to wait?
Where do we write to make the complaint?
Happy new year everyone!

Vuescan is what I used, but I just got it and am not really familiar
with it yet. How do you get it to do the inversion when saving to a
TIFF? I went through the manual and tried to find a setting for it,
but I couldn't figure it out. The previews show positives, but the
final scans were negatives. I thought that maybe since it was a raw
output that Vuescan wouldn't change it.

On the input tab, press the advanced button. Under the media
button, select BW negative from the drop down list. Under the color
(sic) tab, you can then choose what film you are using to obtain best
results as determined by the software.

Note that I do see weird inconsistencies between the preview and scan
view within Vuescan itself from time to time, though. These tend to go
away if I try again...

That's a shame Bill, I've enjoyed many of your model shots. Is this
because
many of the models are amateurs or just starting and not used to the
demands

of studio work? Years ago I did a number of model shoots with both
professional and amateur models, and the professionals were by far the
easiest to work with: they expected to work hard, have changes of costume,
not afraid to show some skin, but the new starters amongst the amateurs
were

much more difficult.

At the level I'm working at (TFP) mostly they are amateurs, or more to the
point, wannabes.

The older I get, the less tolerant I am becoming of having my time wasted.
Anyway, I've never had a rock flake on me, though one time a derelict
building I wanted to shoot fell down before I was done with it.

I believe the decrease in pixel count is negligible in practical use, while
the improvement in high-ISO performance is so evident one could think of

improved over the K20D, given the extra noise caused by the four-channel

If you set the white point off the surf you'd probably get something sort of

Why... to get to know, that K-7 successor will be worth of buying. There
is technical progress going on, you know. Besides, our K20Ds didn't got any
worse with appearance f K-7 and K-x... Pentax K-x has it's good sides, but
in other areas it's still not comparable with K-7.

The K-x has better high ISO performance in a cheap plastic toycam.
This is the only parameter where it is better than the K7.

Does the K-7 use better cheap plastic.??:-)

I have to admit when the link first came up, I saw this guy squatting
in front of what looked to be a piece of artillery...I thought, cool,
but not that cute until I realized I needed to scroll down to see
the koala.

It is certainly a rare occasion to be able to see and photograph a
koala that is not captive in a zoo. I am jealous of the opportunity.
I have to agree that the sky is not too cooperative. I am curious if
you used some kind of flash on this one - seems like the face is just
a bit lacking in depth, more like a flash would do that overpowers
the ambient light a bit. Other than that, pretty cool shot and
experience.

hi,

this is a question to those who have bought/used the k-x. would you
know whether the kit lens that comes with the camera is the old kit
lens or the newer 'mark II' lens? i know it's the L version which
means it has a plastic mount. TIA...

I don't have a K-X kit lens in hand, but I do have the version which
came with the K-m, and it's the same lens. It is reported to be
optically identical to the Mark II. However, note that in addition to
having a plastic lens mount it does not have QuickShift focusing and
lacks a distance scale on the barrel, and does not come with a hood
(another $20 from BH...). It looks and feels cheaper than the
regular Mark II version, but it works just fine.

Has anybody tried using NiZn AA batteries in Pentax flashes (540FGZ, 540 FTZ)?
In particular, - how is the recharge time, compared to alkaline or

I'm pretty sure I called it a one legged whore that couldn't dance.
Or something.
The istD still impresses me with it's build quality.
Not much else, but it's nicely assembled.
I'm very impressed with the high ISO of the K-x, but there are a few things
I don't like about it that will keep me from getting one unless I suddenly
see the need for clean 800+ iso pictures, which at the moment I'm not

I'd buy a K7x this afternoon if it had the K-x sensor and image engine

Two different images, so it's harder to compare them. I prefer the
second image for the three rows of waves you've caught, but out beyond
those waves I don't know. Maybe it should become more blue out towards
the horizon.

The color of the beach in the first one looks more realistic to me.

The sky doesn't look right [?] to me in either one, but I think the

Frank mentioned that in another post... Maybe I should take the hint
and change the look of the blog... :-)

Other than that, pretty cool shot and
experience.

Thanks for the comments, Bruce. Yes I did blast him with a flash, but
that normally adds detail and depth when balanced properly. I also
added a bit of exposure compensation to overcome the the brightness of
the sky (I HAD to overpower the awful white sky or he would ave been a
featureless black blob in the silhouette of a gum tree).

Thanks also Dave and Frank for looking. I was hoping to see a wild
koala this trip. They are apparently pretty common in this part of New
South Wales. The weather just has not been cooperating - it's been
raining pretty much every day which is actually good for the area so I'm
not complaining :-) - and I haven't been able to get out much to shoot
the local wildlife. I've seen a bunch of kangaroos, wallaroos, goannas,
and lots of parrots and other birds but just have not been able to
photograph them.

Hopefully there will be more to come.

There are exif editors that will let you change meta data. Hell it's
just a file and data, you can do most anything within the specifications
even if it's against the rules.

 Hello everyone.
I did make a mistake in the previous post when I said that iPhoto made a

mistake there. No way to change the metadata about the camera who took the
 picture. Am I right?
What could you do about those metadata and how? Is there someone on the list
 who knows ?
But about the thumbnails and the PEF, there is always Atomicview:
 http://www.antzero.com/antweb/?lang=enm=0p=0
who IMHO is worth of a try.
The problem here is that the K7 PEF are not yet recognized as thumbnails in
OS X. Apple make some updates but not for the K-7. How long will we have to
wait? Where do we write to make the complaint?
 Happy new year everyone!
