It evidences itself as a noticeable bright spot near the RH edge of the image (in landscape orientation), with a vertical black line from top to bottom running thru the spot. Its close enough to the RH edge that it can be cropped out with only a small loss of image size, but I don't want to have to crop every image. They run with the land, so by purchasing the land and registering the deed you are agreeing to be bound by it. You do not have to sign a contract with anyone, it's just "there" with the land. The homeowners association enforces them, but really, they have nothing to do with instituting them. They can only be enforced by suing for breach of contract in court. I recall hearing that the restrictive covenants against clothes lines came about because they were seen as an eyesore in a "modern suburb", the thought being that clothes lines were seen as a lower class thing, in inner city slums and such. A court will strike down a restrictive covenant in some cases. I seem to recall one that restricted homeowners from putting a flagpoles on their property. RE: Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol
Here in Brisbane it's totally banned in some designated areas, such as our South Bank, which is advertised as a family-friendly location. No distinction is made between responsible people drinking the odd glass of something, and the yahoos who seem not to know either when to stop or how to behave. There are also comprehensive bans on alcohol in some Aboriginal areas: one unfortunate was fined a considerable sum of money, and, because she is a politician, received significant adverse publicity because there was a bottle of wine on the plane on which she arrived in one such area - not even open, mind you! My opinion is that offensive behaviour, whether caused by drunkenness or not, is already adequately covered by our legal framework, and that it is wowserish overkill to impose these sorts of regulations (which are often made by local councils and other 'authorities', rather than properly constituted parliaments) on the law-abiding and well-behaved majority. Funny, but since pot's been decriminalized here (simple use - as opposed to trafficking - is basically as serious as a parking ticket) use hasn't skyrocketed. A couple of summers ago, due to a court decision, pot was basically legal for a couple of months until Parliament resumed in the autumn and passed a law to plug the loophole. People were smoking the stuff even more openly that year, but actual usage didn't go up. All prohibition does is fill jails and clog courts who could be spending their time dealing with real criminals. cheers, frank (no, I don't smoke pot) -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Firstly there is a LOT of 64-bit windows software out there, things have changed significantly since XP64 was current, the move to 4GB as the base RAM spec on serious machines moved the default OS on mid/high-end machines to Vista 64 a while ago and a lot of apps have moved to 64-bit native (heck, I'm running 64-bit iTunes on my Vista64 machine). Plus most 32-bit software installs and runs just fine under Vista64 or Win7-64, XP64 was awful for app compatibility. Secondly any memory hungry 32-bt app will see performance gains under 64bit OS's with sufficient RAM as the app can then use 100% of the RAM available to it rather than being limited by having to share address space with the OS and any other running applications. This occurs on 4GB and higher configurations and can boost PS performance noticably even if running 32 bit PS. -Adam -- M. Re: Semi OT: 64 bit Operating Systems and PhotoShop
From: Paul Sorenson I *do* make it a point to check the vendors website to see if they have any notes on running their software on Win7/64 bit. It seems a really critical thing is the drivers - printer drivers, etc - you need to make sure there is a 64 bit driver available to support your printer, 'cause a 32 bit driver won't work. Somebody else mentioned the Compatibility Tool. I've run that, and it says I'm mostly good to go. I do need to get some updated drivers, and I'll make sure I have all of them before proceeding. Toshiba recommends creating a Recovery DVD, but when I search for the Recovery Disk Creator application they tell me to use, it's not there. Fortunately, a "Recovery DVD Package" came in the box with the computer. Not a real confidence builder though if they don't even know what disk I'm supposed to have. The other thing is it looks like there's service packs for Vista I need to install, although I don't know WHY, since I'm just going to end up blowing it all away with a clean, custom install. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol
Sorry Bill, I was trying to respond to both you and Bob W at once. I've seen the teen beer parties with your parent's permission. Legal liabilities will dazzle your mind, and keeping the drunken teens at home and not driving is a further complication. I don't have a solution for all of this, just happy to have survived it. Most surprising, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores in my town fail 10% of their controlled buys by selling to an obviously underaged teen with an underaged ID. Re: Semi OT: 64 bit Operating Systems and PhotoShop
From: John Francis We've just bought a new machine, with W7 Professional. You should check the Windows 7 compatibility center to see if your hardware is supported in 64-bit mode before doing anything else. Then check for drivers for peripherals you intend to use. Thanks for the tip. It's been so long since I'd installed a current version of windows, I'd forgotten about the compatibility center thingy. Of course mostly I didn't worry too much about it because most everything I used wasn't ever listed anyway. XP worked just fine on all of my old home-built computers, and none of them were on the list. Only ever had compatibility issues with one CD-ROM drive and it WAS on their list. Go figure. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Subject: Fw: K20D - Hot pixel ?
Ken, bad news indeed. I'd second Ecke's idea - the K-x is rather close in $$ and you'd get the best high ISO performance this side of the k-mount frontier. I'm not suggesting the K-x would be THE replacement for the K20, but all the same, it's not that bad. Paying $400 for the repair seems a tough option. Good luck. Re: Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol
- Original Message - From: "Bob Sullivan" Subject: Re: Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol I sat on the local liquor commission for a number of years. They heard new liquor license petitions and controlled buy violations and made recommends. (Yes, they used under aged teens to test the existing establishments for compliance. An underage teen would present an under aged drivers license for checking/refusal.) We heard one incident that really bothered me and shows the problems. Detectives were in an unmarked car at a local convenience center. They noticed a van of kids approach another older teen entering a liquor store. They got the older kid (with a fake ID) to buy them a case of beer. The kids, 16 to 13 years old, were going to drink the beer while driving around. So imagine some night you're gonna meet a 16 year old in a 3,000 pound van who has just downed a 6 pack of beer for fun. All his inhibitions are released, and he's like to see how fast this van can go... Or maybe your wife & kids will meet him on their way home. You want to get shit faced, falling down drunk at home, I'd say go for it. But most parents won't tolerate that behavior a home, so the teens go out driving in the car. - Yes well, you guys proved that prohibition doesn't work back in the 1920s, and yet to this day, we are all still practicing prohibitionists. If you really want a teenager to try something, make it illegal and tell him not to do it. We were all teenagers once, we all know how true this is, and yet we refuse to learn from our own life experiences. It's just stupid that we treat teeneagers like infants until they rach an arbitrary age of majority and then suddenly expect them to be responsible adults. We've given them the opportunity to do it, but we've taught them nothing of the effects of doing it? So they go off on their own and learn about it with a bunch of other teenagers who are equally ignorant. So who's fault is it really when that 16 year old piles his mom's minivan into your wife and kids? All we've done is teach him rudimentary driving skills. What that story demonstrates is that you don't have to be under age to get shit-faced and kill someone with your car. You don't have to be either shit-faced or young, in fact. Two of my nephews, brothers aged about 17 and 18 at the time, have been involved in separate motor accidents. One was knocked off his motor scooter at high speed by a teenage driver, who was sober at the time but changing his CD; the other was knocked off his motor scooter while on his way to work by a sober middle-aged doctor who was in too much of a hurry and wasn't paying attention. Fortuntately neither of my nephews was seriously hurt, although one of them is still feeling the physical effects some 2-3 years later, but they could both easily have been killed. This shows that throwing road traffic accidents into a discussion about outdoor under-age drinking doesn't really contribute much. Young drunks probably do get involved in a lot of traffic accidents. The number of these would be reduced if we as a society took more responsibility for introducing young people to booze and adulthood. After approx 3850 images, my K20D started producing a defect in the images, not related to SD card or battery charge. It occurs at all ISO's, all lenses, shutter speeds & apertures. Interestingly it is not apparent in live view. I've run the pixel mapping routine several time with no affect on this spot. It evidences itself as a noticeable bright spot near the RH edge of the image (in landscape orientation), with a vertical black line from top to bottom running thru the spot. Its close enough to the RH edge that it can be cropped out with only a small loss of image size, but I don't want to have to crop every image. The body will probably find its way to Pentax Repair, but I thought I'd get some input from the collective minds on the list. Depending on the cost to repair, this may push me into getting a K7. Re: Semi OT: 64 bit Operating Systems and PhotoShop
I just upgraded to a new box w/Win7/64 bit. So far have had pretty much no problems running 32 bit software - PSE6, ProShow Gold, BreezeBrowser, FotoFusion, an older version of Acrobat and others. They all seem to run more quickly, but I don't know if that's a function of a 64 bit OS or faster hardware or both. Haven't installed LR2 yet, but that should install as a 64 bit unless I specifically run the 32 bit install. I've been told that one glitch w/64 bit LR is not being able to publish an album to the web from w/in LR - a function which works from the 32 bit version - but I can't verify that from my own experience. I *do* make it a point to check the vendors website to see if they have any notes on running their software on Win7/64 bit. It seems a really critical thing is the drivers - printer drivers, etc - you need to make sure there is a 64 bit driver available to support your printer, 'cause a 32 bit driver won't work. -p On 1/20/2010 2:12 PM, John Sessoms wrote: Took my laptop in this morning and had 4GB RAM installed (up from 2GB). Don't know why it doesn't show the whole 3.5GB. OTOH, I found out the laptop has two physical hard drives where I thought it had one drive partitioned into two logical drives, so I may have more upgrade options than I originally thought. One thing I started thinking about this morning is installing Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Has anyone had experience with 64 bit versions of Windows? Especially running PhotoshopCS3? Re: Very OT: Regulations for drinking alcohol
I sat on the local liquor commission for a number of years. Regards, Bob S.
