At least your office is air conditioned :(

This week's been hot enough to make it difficult to concentrate. Yesterday I

I installed Photoshop CS4 the other day. I don't use any plugins, I
just saved out my CS2 actions, did the install, and reloaded my
actions, then installed the latest Camera Raw. Done, no drama at all.
Works fine (although CS4 has some known color management glitches).
Much faster loading and a little faster operation even though I'm on
the same old same old Mac G5. Even works better on my more ancient
PowerBook G4.

Regards the Epson 2450 ...

Mac OS X's Image capture recognizes and drives it just fine if I want
to use that. I usually use VueScan: does a better job than anything
else I've tried, including Epson software. I only installed the Epson
software once upon a time to test it, have never touched it since.

I had both the DA14 and the DA10-17.

The DA14 is excellent for this work. It's a very fine lens, best
performance at f/4.5-5.6, with very little rectilinear distortion. And
it focuses very close.

The 10-17FE is fun. Never could figure out what exactly to do with it,
but always got interesting results that worked well.

Yet another swim & run race.

This week the race was held at Scarborough Beach at the eastern edge of
the city. We had much better weather but the surf wasn't safe to do the
full swim course. So the swim-only events were cancelled and the aquathon
(swim followed by run) was greatly shortened.

We had an onshore breeze so a bit of haze in the air. There was a decent
amount of light for once so the AF worked a lot better, plus I could get
some decent shutter speeds and stop down a bit. That was a refreshing
change from the previous events.

This was going to be the final race in the series but due to the swim
troubles the organiser has scheduled a swimming-only event for next week.
Not sure if I'll be there for that one.

Well, I am a fan of vertical grips. My use of multiple AF points is
so-so. I do usually select a single point, but I am not constantly
changing it so I have a pretty good idea where the focus point is.

After reading lots of reviews and seeing many samples, it was clear
to me that the K-x was the choice I needed for the high volume, low
light work I needed to do. I had been ok with the K20D for some
occasional low light stuff, but nothing like I was facing. The
reviews clearing point towards the K-x improving on the K7. I had
yet to justify the move to the K7 over my K20D - in essence, I was
getting along just fine with it. But this low light job was not
going to cut it.

Now that I have worked with the K-x, I am quite surprised by how well
it works in low light and how capable the body is. Is it a K7? Not
by any means - but it is a great body, especially for the price. It
does a good enough job for what I need right now. I would be really
stoked to see the K-x sensor in the K7 body. Until then, I can hold
off on a K7 just using the K20D for most things and the K-x for the
low light.

It's not that hard nowadays, if you're prepared to dig deep into your wallet.
I believe Paul Stenquist has the Pentax 12-24, and speaks well of it. It's
only f4, which is probably the biggest strike against it.

The DA* 16-50 isn't quite as wide, but it is a stop faster. I have one of
these as my primary lens, and am more than satisfied with it. It's quite
good fairly close up, too - in fact it's easier to fill the frame with a
subject using the 16-50 than it is with the 50-135, because quite often
the minimum focussing distance of the 50-135 can be the limiting factor.

For non-Pentax glass the Sigma 10-20 seems to gather favourable press.

Apart from the zooms there's also the DA 14mm, another f/2.8 contender.

I wouldn't use a fish-eye as an everyday lens, especially for faces.

best wide angle - for shooting interiors?

2010-02-25 Thread Tanya Love

Hi everyone,

I’d love to hear your suggestions for the best wide angle lens I can get my
hands on to shoot interiors. I need it to be as fast as possible, and if it is
a zoom, I need constant aperture through-out. Many of the interiors (babies
nurseries) that I am shooting are required to be shot using only available
light, so this is why the faster, the better. And, able to give the best
resolution as possible.

I will be using it on the K-7. It doesn’t have to be a Pentax lens, I just
want good glass, good price and as wide as possible. Wide angle zooms are ok,
although I know that it is rare to find one as optically good as the prime
equivalents.

I also love to shoot babies/kids faces close up with a wide angle perspective,
so something that would suit this purpose would be great too. If it had a nice
macro function, I wouldn’t complain either!

Also, does anyone have the DA Fishe-Eye 10-17mm f3.5-4.5 and if so, what are
your thoughts on it?

TIA!

Tan. ☺

Re: Let's not bitch about Pentax... Let's bitch about Adobe.

2010-02-25 Thread Paul Ewins
TWAIN isn't supported by CS4 on Intel Macs. The plug-in is on the disk but
isn't installed in the default install. In my case it didn't work even after I
had manually put it in the appropriate folder. Apparently if you run CS4 in
Rosetta mode it should work, but as that slows PS down I see no reason to
cripple PS just for one old scanner.

So, CS4 on Mac = no TWAIN for you.

Same deal for my LS8000, I have to use Nikon Scan 4 rather than scanning from
within PS.

The good news is that I'm not out any $ as the software was purchased for my
wife's PowerBook G4 laptop through her work. Of course, it installed just fine
on her machine even though it's going on six years old now. But, since Adobe
allows for single users to install on one laptop and one desktop I gave it go
on my Mac Pro. Well, that was an adventure.

I wonder if it has to do with the Intel chips on my first generation Mac Pro. I
know that others with identical machines were having precisely the same issue
as me. But, even folks with brand new machines were having install issues so
it's anybody's guess.

I'm thinking I might upgrade to Snow Leopard and see if that makes any
difference. It's totally counterintuitive since SN has all kinds of bugs
associated with it if you can trust the forum chatter. But, I probably give it
a go for a lark. At this point I'd piss on a spark plug if I thought it would
do any good :-)

There's nothing about the CS3 applications that doesn't suit me.
But... the courses I'm teaching are built around the CS4 Adobe apps
and it's becoming increasingly difficult to plan lessons for classes
that use the CS4 interfaces while I'm working with the CS3
interfaces... so, even though it's expensive (even with an academic
discount), I recently ordered the Adobe CS4 "Production Premium"
suite.

I was dreading the install Even before I started. Adobe won't let you
"upgrade" apps - you have to install the new software alongside your
existing versions, transfer plug-ins and Actions and then uninstall
the old versions. Infuriating. But that's how it goes if everything
*works*. Which it didn't.

Error message that says some component installs failed: a list that
includes just about every application in the suite. Multiple tries.
Disabling firewall and anti-virus software. Many re-boots. Manually
uninstalling old versions before installing new ones. A Google search
on the error message I'm getting reveals I'm far from alone. None of
the official or unofficial remedies works. One brilliant suggestion
from Adobe: "Try installing on another computer". Hey Doug! Wanna let
me install my new Adobe software suite on your computer?

Finally, I just let the installation run through to the end, even
though it warned me at the beginning that almost none of the aps would
be installed. Strangely, it goes through all 4 DVD's. And in the end
about half of the apps do install, even though the error message said
they wouldn't. Only Premiere Pro, After Effects and Encore failed. And
I deleted the CS3 versions at the start (and I'm afraid to risk trying
to re-install them at this point). Fortunately, my new laptop is
(barely) powerful to do the limited video editing I need to do at the
moment, and it has the CS3 suite, so I can get by.

I'm thinking all along, "I paid $$$ for this when I probably could
have found a torrent with a crack that would have installed with less
trouble!"

Good news is that the CS4 version of Adobe Bridge seems to be stable
enough to be actually usable (Bridge CS3 caused me no end of trouble).

Other good news is that my laptop has demonstrated that 64-bit Windows
7 looks like a winner, so I'll soon be upgrading my desktop OS. With a
clean install, I'm hoping that the CS4 install works completely if I
install before any of the other software. Yeah, call me a dreamer...

Canada's always had a two-tier health system. The poor get stuck with
our mediocre service, the rich go to the US and pay the over-inflated
costs down there. The thing that frustrates people is that we can't
pay a Canadian for service outside the line, even if we can afford it.
The only thing we handle reasonably well is emergency services (and to
a lesser extent, medical emergencies which require non-emergency
department care).

I've got extensive experience with the Canadian Health system due to
having two chronically ill close family members (grandfather with
post-polio syndrome, who passed away in the late 90's, and my mother
has severe Rheumatoid Arthritis and has had 2 hip replacements and
various other surgeries). The Canadian system sucks, we just tend to
suck less than most of the more socialized systems (mostly because
Canada has 11 semi-independent systems, not one National system).
Overall the US system delivers better care, but its costing is totally
broken, mostly due to problems with the large Insurance Companies and
HMO's, which drive up uninsured costs (if the insurance companies in
the US payed the same rates as uninsured for care, uninsured costs
would plummet. As it is, uninsured payers end up paying for most of
the cost of delinquent uninsured patents). Both the US and Canadian
systems are broken in different ways.

Actually, the K-x currently has the best high ISO performance of any
APS-C or smaller sensor camera. It's not that far behind the D700
either (less DR, similar performance at 3200, not much more noise at
6400, the D700's visibly better at 12,800 though and has 25,600). If
you don't want to haul a brick, nothing can beat the K-x for low-light
performance.

You get the AF frame outline, and the point's location in the frame is
shown on the rear display. I was surprised but I don't much miss the
point display, somewhat the opposite in fact. It's not hit and miss
after the first 5 minutes (and it's not like the AF point display in
the viewfinder is always accurate either, it's an approximation).

You'd think that they would have worked out the issues by now. (And,
yes, I discovered that none of their clean scripts works.)

I have high hopes that a clean install in a freshly-installed OS will
function properly, including Premier Pro, Encore and After Efects. But
I'm worried about installing a few CS3 apps after that: I still need
The CS3 versions of Dreamweaver and InDesign to work because I didn't

Does it have any PCI cards for scuzzy or USB 2.0 ports? Belkin cards in
particular cause startup problems. Is the scanner an Epson? Lots of trouble
getting their drivers to work with some Mac OS versions.

I still can't get used to Lightroom. But I almost always do some PhotoShop work
on stills in addition to conversion, so Im happy with my PhotoShop workflow.
Lightroom would just add an extra step for me.

Shouldn't need a plugin, just a properly TWAIN-compliant Epson App. PS
supports any TWAIN-compliant scanner and has for years. It's an awful
way to scan though, batch scanning is severely crippled from inside

Thanks, Frank!

Frank Furness was a leading architect in Philadelphia in the late 1800s; he
designed the first library on Penn's then-semi-rural campus. It is a gem. It
now houses the Fine Arts Library; the main library moved to a nearby
architectural dungheap in the 1960's.

When final exams approach the Furness Building =does= bear a certain
resemblance to a Victorian workhouse, though...

milspec? 1/8" steel back plate. Less noisy. Haven't tried to test the
"can be used to drive tent pegs" assertion.)

Had (well, I still have it, but it's dead) Unicomp Endurapro; it might
have recovered from the water but not from me trying to get it apart to
dry it.

I love Bridge. Never tried it on CS3. (I went straight from CS to CS4.) Bridge
has become the heart of my file system and workflow model. Couldn't be happier

Let's not bitch about Pentax... Let's bitch about Adobe.

2010-02-25 Thread Mark Roberts

I'm not sure what the big deal is here, the K-x has no AF position
indicators in the finder, you can still select the AF position as it's
indicated on the rear panel instead. There is 5 or 11 point auto AF,
centre point AF or manual selection of 1 of the 11 AF points. Plus the

The K-x is quite a deal really and compliments either the K20D or K7 quite well.

GESO: Surf N Turf (#6)

2010-02-25 Thread David Mann
Yet another swim & run race.

This week the race was held at Scarborough Beach at the eastern edge of the
city. We had much better weather but the surf wasn't safe to do the full swim
course. So the swim-only events were cancelled and the aquathon (swim followed
by run) was greatly shortened.

We had an onshore breeze so a bit of haze in the air. There was a decent
amount of light for once so the AF worked a lot better, plus I could get some
decent shutter speeds and stop down a bit. That was a refreshing change from
the previous events.

This was going to be the final race in the series but due to the swim troubles
the organiser has scheduled a swimming-only event for next week. Not sure if
I'll be there for that one.

And they will get to vote for Congress if/when Puerto Rico becomes a state.

I'm pretty sure they do already get to vote for President, so there must

59 is impressively low.

You're right about the waits for elective surgery. They've been
unreasonably long for some time now. I believe that they're getting
better, but there's certainly more work that needs to be done.

About 10 years ago we had a shortage of MRI technicians (not the
machines, just the techs) so there was a waiting list for those as
well. We Ontarians were sending cancer patients down to Buffalo on
the Canadian taxpayers dime. In time we got our waiting time down to
something more reasonable.

I think that many even here in Canada are frustrated that they can't
get faster service if they pay for it (like you can in the US). That
would, in the minds of many (including me!) undermine the idea of
universality that's now the bedrock of our system. If one can pay to
get to the front of the line, then someone with less money will have
to wait longer. Some may think this is fair, some (like me) don't.

That being said, I've never been in the situation of needing surgery
and having to wait. I'm honest enough to admit that my tune might
change some if I could afford hip-replacement surgery but had to wait
months or years to get my surgery.

While I did put off replacement knees for quite some time until the pain
really affected my daily activities, when I decided to do it - it was a few
weeks wait, mainly due to the specific doctor I had do them.

Nothing HAS to go. I've been seeing a lot of double catchlights in high end

chooses the look. We're free to like it or dislike it, but there's no one right

Nothing HAS to go. I've been seeing a lot of double catchlights in high end
fashion photography lately. Thumb through an issue of Vogue. The photographer
chooses the look. We're free to like it or dislike it, but there's no one right
way.

Guy walks into the emergency room, he's got a duck on his head - it's

Anyway the Doctor asks what the problem is, and the duck says "Doc, I

I'm honest enough to admit that my tune might
change some if I could afford hip-replacement surgery but had to wait
months or years to get my surgery.

cheers,
frank

Nah. I'm okay with a little grittiness in my low-light shots. And I can't live

Doesn't really matter what it's a photo of.

It's just one of those things you do for a good print. Single
catch-light in each eye. If the double catch-light in the other eye had
been separated just a tiny bit more, the second light would have to go
from that eye as well.

Portraiture print competition rules for PPONC.

The final exam for my retouching class was removing reflections from
glasses on an 8x10 glossy print; head shot. Had to be undetectable when
viewed at arms length.

It's a lot easier to do in photoshop than it was having to do it on
actual prints.

You've got quantified testing to back that up?

I'd be quite surprised at 14 MP APS-C in 2005.  (There might have been;
I wasn't much paying attention.) (And yeah, autofocus; Pentax doesn't
believe in the utility of autofocus. Much more a cultural problem than
a technical one, I think. So the current cultural change might have
interesting results.)

Being frustrated, well; Pentax don't have the tech base to be a good
consumer electronics manufacturer. Recent public comments (for "in the
last 12 months or so" values of recent) could be taken as acknowledging
that. It then comes down to how they partner, and with who; pretty much
everybody who really knows how to do this stuff is either competition,
second tier (however hard they're working on climbing), or mostly doing
black project work for the USG.

Though I'd be deeply amused at autofocus technology from Questar's high
altitude observation division showing up in Pentax cameras.

Re: On FF but without intent to start a flame

2010-02-25 Thread Ken Waller

Glad to hear it was only a case of gravity !

The waits I'm hearing about with Canadian medicine are mostly about elective
surgery - knees, hips and things like that.\

BTW, as I sit here typing away, my pulse is 59 bpm.

I didn't bother telling the list, because it was rather
inconsequential, but about a month ago, I was sitting, got up quickly,
had that "head rush" and (for the first time in my life) fainted. As
I'd heard that every loss of consciousness requires a doctor visit, I
went to the nearest emergency ward.

Now, I have to admit, I was there a long time. It was one of
Toronto's largest trauma centres (Sunnybrooke, for you locals) at
evening rush hour, and there were several serious automobile collision
victims that needed help more than me. All in all, it was a 10 hour
visit, but I realize that my condition put me at the bottom of the
triage list.

However, in that ten hours I got great treatment. Before seeing a
doctor, nurses took blood, checked blood pressure/pulse and gave me a
cardiogram. The doctor finally saw me and said that in a way it was
good that I was there for that length of time, because he could give
me ~another~ cardiogram to make sure there was no change (out of an
abundance of caution). There was also a specific blood test that he
wanted to see that the nurses didn't do, so I got a second session of
bloodwork.

The doctor saw me two or three times, and appeared concerned yet calming.

After it all, he said that all tests were fine, and that (as he said)
gravity just got the best of me that day. A head rush gone too far,
nothing more. He said that I'd done the right thing by having it
checked and apologized for the long wait (as several nurses did
earlier).

Can you imagine how much that would have all cost me had I paid for
it? Or if my insurance paid? Would they have authorized all those
duplicate tests?

And that was at one of Toronto's top hospitals - yes, I got to choose
the hospital I went to, no insurance company to give me a list of
"approved" hospitals.

So, I'll take the wait to get top treatment with nothing
out-of-pocket, thank you very much.

BTW, Ken, there are many anecdotal stories (as yours was) of Detroit
citizens crossing the border into Canada to try to get treatment here,
as they have no coverage in the US. "Borrow" a Canadian's card and
hope you don't get caught and charged with fraud - that's how
desperate some uninsured Americans are.

And, to top it off (on a personal note), my heartbeat came in a 57
bpm. Not quite Lance's resting heartbeat of 32, but pretty good for
an old guy...

;-)

cheers,
frank

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I wasn't worried, but did notice you've not been on-list much of late.
It's nice to hear from you.

Now, since it's your birthday, go get drunk. If you're already drunk,
get drunker.

;-)

cheers,

The "wild child from Chicago" turned 50 today and is doing just fine! She
had a lovely walk with her husband this afternoon, a fine dinner afterwards,
and is hoping to do something wild and crazy with melted chocolate and

Of course, what I submit will be colour, but I couldn't resist
