Re: Manually focusing on the wrong sharp edge?
On Jul 19, 2010, at 6:36 PM, Doug Brewer wrote: Larry Colen wrote: I was photographing a friend playing in a small club in Capitola the other night. When I reviewed my photos, I found that an awful lot of them were focused on sharp edges in front of the musician: The tip jar, drum kit, microphone etc. I understand how this happens with autofocus. The camera is too stupid to know what to focus on and focuses on the sharp edge. What I don't understand is why this happens on manual focus. *I* should know better. One challenge that I have in low light is actually seeing the line of the split prism to try and line that up on the musician. Especially musicians that tend to move around a lot. As such, I may rely a lot more on the microprism ring, and wonder if I just focus until I see whatever is in that ring come into focus, and not notice that it's not actually the subject that I'm trying to photograph. More a case of my brain saying something is sharp, press the shutter. I'm curious if other people have this problem when manually focusing, and what they do to fix it. I got what I thought was an amusing compliment on my dancing that night. I had a rather nice slow blues dance with an attractive young lady. Afterwards, she said in a rather husky voice I need a cigarette. Unfortunately, she was married. Even worse, her husband doesn't share. I did get a couple shots of the lead singer which turned out pretty well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4807504309/in/set-72157624409188927/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/4808124360/in/set-72157624409188927/ In the second one Amy Lou isn't as sharp as I'd like, but I do like the way the composition worked out with Gary (the bass player) in the background. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est Never understood the fascination with split prisms. They're clunky and self-limiting. Give me a plain matte any day for manual focus. When I got my K100 I couldn't manually focus with it to save my soul. When I got the katzeye, it was like growing back a missing limb. I suspect you're shooting yourself in the foot here, Larry, by trying to use the split prism and recomposing at f/1.4. You don't have any wiggle room shooting with such a narrow DOF, and I think this could go a long way toward explaining why your focus is off too often. Stop the lens down a couple clicks. This will help with the focus and will also make the photos look like they were taken at night in a club, instead of afternoon in the park. At ISO 6400, and missing more photos due to subject motion blur than bad focus, I'd end up with photos with depth of field, but so much noise, or motion blur, you wouldn't see anything. Most of the screen is matte anyways, so I can try using that section more anyways. The focus of my interest is rarely dead center anyways. Most of the situations where I shoot the split prism gets me a lot closer than I could with a matte screen. I know this because I'll focus using the matte portion of the screen, and check it with the split prism. Since most of my photography seems to be with fast lenses 77mm or shorter, I rarely have any problem with the dark center syndrome with the split prism. Also: Relax. It's only photography. That it is, but I'm still trying to learn techniques to get better at it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: Monaco II
I find dropbox to be pretty easy to use and not particularly intrusive,\ either their PC based interface, or through the web, (though uploading multiple files through the web interface seems to be hit or miss, mostly miss these days). All I have to do is upload a file, right click and get a public URL. Share that and there are no visible advertisements, it just works. It may not be the fastest download speeds but it doesn't try to force non members to sign up by making them second class. Oh, by the way it's free too, (the first 2 gig are free anyway). If you decided you want to join, you should use someone as a referral who's already using the system, it doesn't have to be me, whoever you use will get extra free space, and I just hate to see something like that go to waste, (yea, yea, I'm cheap). Re: Regarding Bill Atkinson...
Bill's been very active in Photography for a long time, since he retired from Apple 19 or 20 years ago quite possibly. He has been involved with color inkjet printing for a good while (IIRC, most of the Epson professional printer color calibration profiles (like the 7600, 7800, etc) are his handiwork). MacPaint started out as being his testing rig to exercise the QuickDraw graphics library routines that he created (originally for the Lisa, then translated and moved to Macintosh), and everyone liked it so much they turned it into one of the original applications distributed with every Macintosh. Amazing what could be done with simple one-bit graphics, eh? Bill's photography shows the same attention to detail and thoughtfulness that his programming did. I used to run into him at Calypso Imaging in Santa Clara from time to time, until Calypso moved to Santa Cruz and then later closed its doors. We were both at Apple at the same time for a brief moment, but he was on the way out as I entered the company. Re: A new tradition
I bought my first serious camera in 1967 (a Pentax Spotmatic) to record the growth and activities of my beautiful two year old baby boy. He is now 44 and has recently taken up photography as a hobby. I think my 42 year long hobby of photography finally caught his fancy. He has also been a very active cyclist and until just a few years ago was a cat III racer. When he was very young, we pulled him and his younger sister in a Bugger (bike trailer) when my wife and I went on bike rides. The same top-40 of the classical domain, very little, if any, contemporary serious music, especially in the locally-programmed classical music. The only exceptions are national programs and the major symphony broadcasts. I'm grateful for the NPR programming carried by our Atlanta public broadcaster. However, we also have WREK radio, the 100,000 watt Georgia Tech student-owned radio station that's about as eclectic as a radio station could possibly be. Most of the programming is done by individuals or groups who are devoted to various genres of music -- blues, jazz, country, many flavors of rock, and traditional and popular music from around the world. I'm especially fond of Weekend Cornucopia, where you cannot predict from one track to the next what you're going to hear. The juxtapositions are often wildly different, and not infrequently comical. The commercial broadcasters keep attempting to entice students to cough up their license for lotsa moula, but the students will have nothing of it. OT - Anyone got opinions on the Olympus Pen E-PL1?
I'm trying to persuade my wife to move up to something better than her old Casio Exilim. I'm tempted by the Micro 4/3 systems, and the Olympus E-PL1 seems to have the ease of use and simplicity that my wife is looking for (without being so large that she would refuse to carry it around) at a pretty decent price. Even with an extra lens (the 40-150) it's still cheaper than the Panasonic, and has in-body image stabilisation. The optional electronic view- finder might be interesting, too, although it's more likely to be something that I would use than something my wife would consider. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: PESO Noisy Miner
Wow! That's pretty neat, Rob. Love the detail, color, and expression of the bird. Very nice work. They are ferociously territorial and I obviously stepped over the line, I was being dive bombed and generally hassled but I caught this shot as it was eyeing me off for the next assault. The image was shot hand held using my K-x and FA200/2.8 @ F3.2, 1/400, ISO 1250, the K-x AF was no match for this guy. http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~aglcnews/temp/IMGX02127.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noisy_Miner Hope you enjoy. -- Rob Studdert (Digital Image Studio) Tel: +61-418-166-870 UTC +10 Hours Gmail, eBay, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa: distudio -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: OT - Anyone got opinions on the Olympus Pen E-PL1?
I got mine approx 2 weeks ago. Still getting used to it, but the size is definitely in its favor. I like being able to zoom manually instead of electronically. There are days when I reached for a zoom/tele button like a digi PS b/c that's what the form feels like in my hand. In-body IS is what made me choose this over the Panasonic version, as well as the Olympus lenses being smaller. Also sensor being larger than that in a PS (i.e., Canon G10 which I didn't connect with) is another good thing. AF is slower than a DSLR, but I just updated the firmware last night and haven't had a chance to test it out (I think dpreview test said it's supposed to get 20% better). It would be nice if it had the dials (like the EP-1 or EP2) to adjust aperture, but it is more PS in that fashion (adjust via the 4-way controller). The flash is teeny, but adequate for lighting up shadows in a sunny day. I am waiting for the EVF to come back in stock at BH Adorama to give it a try. My cousin has the EP2 with the EVF - I played with it briefly and want one of my own. I've never been able to manual focus well through an optical view finder and think that EVF might be a big help.
