I had lots of discussions with Bill (off the list) that apparently show

I can safely say that I respect him and he respects me.

It is also true that Bill's expertise in photography and gear is very

the group could be aware of that in a constructive way. After all, this

I am thinking that some mutual apologies are in order. Even not because
all parties have their hands dirty here, but simply to show that these

I have, unfortunately, been away from photography for a while.
I always thought that my photography 'defined' who I was.
I had time to look back at some of my photography, and I was surprised to
see (with some humility) that the photos were very good. I always had
people tell me how good my photos were, but I always thought they were being
polite...
Maybe one should take a short respite and view their portfolio with unbiased
eyes...
I have viewed many PESOs and been impressed with the work. I always thought
that my 'work' would never 'rate'. Maybe I should not consider this and
just show my photeéos...

My latest upload is:

It has been a while since I have gone out with cameras in hand... I am

taking out my Leicas. I will be taking out my *istD to back up my photos.

Specifically, I am thinking that even mention of one's sexual preferences

the only person who could enforce a ban is Doug, so calling for bans is

to be as polite as possible, and as polite as they would be in real world

Re: WTF? was OT: new camera

2010-10-24 Thread Walter Gilbert

My first DSLR was a used E-20n.

Whisper-quiet, built like a tank, and takes wonderful photos. I looked
at Olympus for a long time when I started looking into buying my first
new DSLR. The great thing about it is that it was a fixed-lens, so I
didn't have anything invested beyond the cost of the camera and all the
accessories ($120 US + shipping). So, I was free to look around. I
was, of course, tempted by Canon and Nikon -- cajoled by friends to go
with Canon, so I could be a part of the club. And, was even lured by
the guy at the camera shop to try a Sony.

But, I stuck to my guns and got the K-x that I'd been salivating over
for months. Nary a regret to this day. But, I still like my Oly, and
would use it a lot more often if the write-speed weren't so achingly
slow. I've loaned it out to a kid to use as a learner camera for his
school newspaper.

Bill has responded to me in an ugly fashion on more than one

I missed all the new camera angst. With the frequency of the thread I might
have guessed its nature, but happily, I didn't. Nor dis I go back to catch up
on the rhetoric.
Bill and I had a difference early on in my tenure on the list that was
intense, but short lived. I look forward to Bills wit and clarity and
consistently check his thread comments. I very much value his perceived respect
for my thoughts and work. His leaving the list would be sad indeed.

Great lens as well.
Funny E-10 story: a woman in my department would try to use this camera
periodically. She was one of these extremely intelligent, ultra competent
people, but she could never get the E10 to to work properly. One day I'm going
through thee whole process with her. She aims thee camera and hits the shutter
release. Smoke starts to come out from under the flash. I was sure the camera
was toast, but it still works fine to this day. My friend bought a sketch pad.
;-). Actually, she later left chemistry and became on of those folks who sails
expensive sailboats from point A to B for the rich owners that didn't have
time. The most common trip was from the US to the Mediterranean and back. As I
said, an amazing person. She met a nice pirate and settled down (on a boat of
course).

Me too I guess (excepting Canon DSLRs of course ;-)

Interesting. Is it the name, the heritage, what? Just curious. After
shooting Pentax film for over 10 years, when I got a D60 I wasn't at all
enamored with it - it was plasticky and felt a bit cheap. The brand
didn't bother me because - let's face it - anyone shooting Pentax
doesn't give a stuff about branding. But when I got a 1D mark II it was
such a pleasure to use - the layouts of the controls are pretty
unconventional, yet once learned were faster than anything I can recall.
The actual design of the camera is ergonomically pleasing, and (at the
risk of making Godders wince) actually beautiful. Really like it.
Seriously - I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the 1D as
an object is right up there with an Aston Martin in my eyes.

I would imagine that most mid-range cameras aren't to my liking - Canon,
Nikon or Pentax - except the K7 that i saw at GFM was really nice - and
would definitely consider one (or K5) as the design and ergonomics
looked great.

So what is the big thing about hating a Canon?

RE: OT: new camera

that's quite easy. People are free to do whatever they want as long as they
don't infringe other people's rights to the same thing - my freedom to swing
my fist stops where your face begins.

Where words are concerned, people have the right to say any damn thing they
want provided other people are not forced to listen to them, and have the
right to reply. If they say something actionable, of course, they can expect
to find themselves in court - one should not have to tolerate lies - but
simply insulting someone as an expression of opinion is something we should
all tolerate.

Without wishing to dwell on specifics, if B calls G an F all this tells us
is that B is in fact an A.

Wonderful shot. ?I'm curious why you didn't come in a lot tighter. ?I think
that I'd have shot from about half the distance, so that the car was about as
close as possible to the lower left corner and the top of the frame didn't extend
much beyond the brick building.

Were you trying to get more of the neighborhood to set context?

The image was shot at ISO 100 near dusk, I was fighting for every bit
of DoF I could get given that I was shooting at f2.4 and a fairly low
shutter speed.

It almost has a LensBaby-ish DoF to it.

I like the image of the car, but the background is kind of distracting.
It would work better, I think, if the pickup truck in the background
were even more out of focus ... or better yet, not there at all.

FWIW, that's my position, too, Bob.

Exactly. Of course since this right of expression extends to all, we are all
free to point out bigotry and abominable behavior when it occurs. And if the
person who made the nasty comment can't handle the fact that his conduct was

October PUG is up

It's here: http://pug.komkon.org/10oct/index.html or here:
http://pug.komkon.org/ Sorry for the delay.

I had to do a few things differently this time to accommodate the
dimensions of the photo. Most of the changes will be obvious, once
you take a look at the gallery. One thing that might not be all that
obvious is the download original link near the bottom right of each
photo. I've never included this before and won't again.

19 photos. Enjoy.

 Anyone here have/use one?

I have one. It has a busted shutter release. It will focus and meter
with a half-press, but won't trip the shutter when pressed all the
way. The shutter release on the battery grip works fine, though, so I
guess it's a portrait camera.

There is no accommodation for pre-A K-mount lenses. M42 with an
adapter works peachy.

Aside from the usual complaints which, other than the lack of
_aperture simulator_, I didn't really find all that bad, the film
loads on the right side and feeds to the left. This means that when
you go to the local automated 1-hour processor, all of your pictures
are upside down on the proof sheet and CD. If you sleeve your film
like I do, you'll find that all the numbers are upside down and
backwards. Not a big deal, but if you're anal retentive...

why? isn't pompous twittery also an inherent trait? If you limit other

Secondly, why do you limit it to inherent properties, whatever that means?
