Re: What lens would you like Pentax to make?

2011-08-31 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I like the 40-43 mm focal length on 16x24 mm format. Given the cameras
I'm currently using, I wish Pentax would build a few more Pentax-L
43mm f/1.9 Limited units. The Voigtländer Nokton 40mm f/1.4 is an
excellent lens, but it's not as sweet as the FA43 Limited.

The only alternative in this focal length that might do as well as the
Pentax 43mm is the Leica Summicron-C 40mm f/2.

When the FA* 200/4 macro was last available (2004) retail price at Adorama was
$1295 IIRC. Again IIRC, that wasn't too different from retail prices for lenses
like the FA* 80-200. So I might expect that a DA* 200 macro would be in the
price range of the DA* 60-250. Obviously pure speculation.

As I think more about the notion of a 200mm macro, however, I am not sure it is
that great an idea. I have the FA* 200/4 and I don't use it nearly as much on
my digital bodies as I did on 35mm film bodies. In part, I believe, because it
gives me a 300mm-equivelant FOV. I commented to Tan the other day that if she
wanted the classic 80-200 experience, then she would be happy with the 50-135
lens. By the same token, if you or I want the classic 200mm macro capability,
then what we really want looks more like a DA* 135/1.8 macro. Wouldn't that be

Back to the SMC Tak 135/2.5. This screwmount lens was available in two
versions, One is better than the other. If I remember, they're not easily

one has an additional stop marked on the DOF scale. You might find more info in

There's also a K mount version of the better lens. I had one of those and only
recently sold it. Excellent lens. But -- dare I say it -- with the DA*

- The serial number is 43,812 against 43,802 for the version 1

- Presence of the marking 4 on the scale of depth of field (the

Yeah, you're mostly right, but there's a down-side to putting
everything underground: Every time there's a problem holes have to be
dug at great cost of money and time, along with all the disruptions
that causes. Once the fix has been made and everything filled in and
patched up, the pavement is always uneven and bumpy.

Real bumpy.

Dangerously bumpy to cyclists.

And after a winter or two those patches begin to disintegrate into

And that's only repairs, Over the past decade or so private concerns

optics under our streets with the expected bumpy roads left behind.

Some streets are un-ride-able to the point that I avoid them

speed, or if I want length, I go for the A* 200 which is longer, effectively
just as fast, and has auto exposure if I want it.

Mind you, despite getting an amazing deal on the 200, the 135 was a LOT
cheaper, it's also probably about a third the volume, and half the weight.

Could you do an SDM adaptall?

2011-08-31 Thread Larry Colen
I think that part of the reason that the adaptall mount went out of favor is
the difficulty and complexity of doing a screw-drive autofocus version. It's
one thing to make a linkage that'll handle f-stops, but the tolerance you need
for screwdrive would be really tough to pass through an adaptall style mount.
However, SDM is an electronic connection, not a mechanical one. For that
matter, you wouldn't even need a mechanical linkage for aperture, just the
stop-down actuator.

I was contemplating that with sensors improving so quickly, that it's barely
cost effective to spend the money making fast glass, to get a stop or two, when
sensors will give that same speed in a couple years time anyways, for a lot
cheaper. Therefore, fast primes are going to quickly become a niche market,
especially in DSLR mounts, and that there probably aren't enough Pentax mount
DSLRs out there to justify the development costs of new fast prime optics.
However, it might be economically feasible for a boutique optics company to
make fast primes using something akin to an adaptall system.

PESO - Frankenburger

2011-08-31 Thread Rick Womer
This whole block of Niagara Falls (Canadian side) has some of the most
delectable touristy kitsch available anywhere.

Not for Art (or Ahhht), just for fun.

Re: What lens would you like Pentax to make?

2011-08-31 Thread P. J. Alling
The SMC Pentax 135mm f2.5 is a bit more convenient, and has slightly
better coatings. Though the Takumar has a really nice dedicated lens
hood, that I use on the Pentax.

If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you try the S-M-C
Takumar 135mm f2.5. NICE lens.

Re: Could you do an SDM adaptall?

2011-08-31 Thread Stan Halpin
Wishful thinking alert: Pentax needs a system that will allow their DA*400 or
500mm lens to AF with a 2x extender. So, either reasonably fast glass or a much
improved AF system that works well @f8-11 in low contrast dim light.

I think that part of the reason that the adaptall mount went out of favor is
the difficulty and complexity of doing a screw-drive autofocus version. It's
one thing to make a linkage that'll handle f-stops, but the tolerance you
need for screwdrive would be really tough to pass through an adaptall style
mount. However, SDM is an electronic connection, not a mechanical one. For
that matter, you wouldn't even need a mechanical linkage for aperture, just
 the stop-down actuator.

I was contemplating that with sensors improving so quickly, that it's barely
cost effective to spend the money making fast glass, to get a stop or two,
when sensors will give that same speed in a couple years time anyways, for a
lot cheaper. Therefore, fast primes are going to quickly become a niche
market, especially in DSLR mounts, and that there probably aren't enough
Pentax mount DSLRs out there to justify the development costs of new fast
prime optics. However, it might be economically feasible for a boutique
optics company to make fast primes using something akin to an adaptall system.

I think we're halfway there, given the performance of the K5 with SDM lenses.
If they continue to make progress at the same rate, that kind of performance
will happen soon. Remember too, that focusing a long lens is a bit easier than
focusing a wide lens.

I'm catching up

2011-08-31 Thread Larry Colen
Despite having an appointment this morning, and wasting several hours trying to
find a pair of shoes to buy, I started framing walls on the shed today, which
is about the most visible progress per hour of work on these projects:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157627442381829/

I still need to put the header in over the wall framed for windows, and a
header and framing for the roof on the end wall, but it's nice to see visible
progress.
