Re: Ailing Monitor...

2015-06-17 Thread Zos Xavius
I have a 2312 and it was the best purchase I've made in a long while.
The newer ones are 100% (roughly) sRGB coverage. I find this good
enough since I mostly export to sRGB anyways and its the profile my
printer prefers. I don't think you can go wrong with the 23 or 24.
Especially for the cost. Due note that the 12 models introduced led
backlighting. The 2310 was shown to perform very closely to the newer
panel. IPS is the way to go for sure.

Re: Selfie

2015-06-17 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
That is typical Malamute personality. Although their appearance can
be intimidating, they are ordinarily quite friendly to strange humans,
although not always to strange animals. They are not "one person"
dogs. In Northwest Alaska, where the Inuit relied on them for
transportation, no family could keep enough dogs to form a full team
for a seal, walrus or whale hunting expedition, so they relied on dogs
borrowed from their neighbors. Dogs that wouldn't go with and obey
someone other than their owner were, therefore, liabilities, and
eliminated from the gene pool.

The link takes me to a "509 Bandwith Limit Exceeded" message from PDML's

Did anyone else get SPAM that contains a link to the PDML archive?

That is typical Malamute personality. Although their appearance can
be intimidating, they are ordinarily quite friendly to strange humans,
although not always to strange animals. They are not "one person"
dogs. In Northwest Alaska, where the Inuit relied on them for
transportation, no family could keep enough dogs to form a full team
for a seal, walrus or whale hunting expedition, so they relied on dogs
borrowed from their neighbors. Dogs that wouldn't go with and obey
someone other than their owner were, therefore, liabilities, and
eliminated from the gene pool.

went to a "you can only lease" option for all their cars. So you get
upgrades frequently but you are paying through the nose continuously
for the rest of your days for more car and upgrades than you may need.

I have an Audi I bought new in 1998. It still works just fine and I'm
happy with it. I simply couldn't afford the you must lease option for
that. Sure I'd be driving a 2014 Audi now, but I don't need it and I
can't afford it. There's nothing wrong with my 1998.

I don't like Adobe any more. I have to use their products to get what
I want, but I don't like them, especially their marketing division.
Software leasing is for well-heeled corporations, not retired folks on
a fixed income. But they don't give a fuck. They smelled a huge
cash-grab opportunity and went for it. Then high-fived each other for
the rest of the week.

I don't have any love for Adobe either but the subscription-based model
works for me. I can't get my head around Lightroom but I use Photoshop
all the time. I originally got a hand-me-down version of CS3 but there
was no way I was ever going to be able to fork out the outrageous cost
of moving to CS6.

But 10 bucks a month? That's affordable - at least for now. And I still
have CS3 lurking in case Adobe get extra greedy...

Leasing automobiles works for some people too.

But if it doesn't work for you, you at least have the alternative to buy
an automobile. And if a new automobile is too expensive, you can buy a
used one. Plus, you can buy a Chevy, Toyota, VW ... if Ford's not your
cup of tea.

That model doesn't work with Adobe because they have an effectively
unregulated monopoly.

Don't forget that $10 a month is an INTRODUCTORY offer. The price was
supposed to double after one year.

Adobe backed off because of all the squawks, but they didn't say they
were abandoning the idea.

Re: New Lightroom/Photoshop Features

2015-06-17 Thread Matthew Hunt
There is an additional fix for Pentax users that's not mentioned in
the release notes. Lightroom now recognizes the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4
Contemporary lens, instead of reporting it as "Unknown Lens". This
affects things like the metadata filters and the information overlay.
(I reported the bug to Adobe and went back and forth with an
engineer--on a Sunday--to provide an example file, so I knew this fix
was coming.)

Images that were already in the catalog will not be updated to show
the lens. Godfrey explained how to update them back when a different
lens was added, and I stole his explanation and posted it here:
http://photo.stackexchange.com/a/11376/2138
Note the caveats in the comments: This updates the raw files (at least
for DNG) so it won't work on a read-only filesystem, and it may cause
a lot of extra backing-up if you do automatic backups of changed
files. One thing that helps is to narrow down your selection as much
as possible--I only shot the 17-70 on my K-5 II, so I selected that
camera explicitly in the filter panel, in addition to the lens.

Interesting point. My take on this was that once they had you on
subscription (and presumably enough uptake to remove any future stand alone
option) that versions become meaningless. You get the current software with
the monthly subscription, so you can call it just PS and LR.

Unless of course, they wish to divide it at some point, and give the latest
updates immediately, only to those who pay a 'premium monthly charge'.

Here's a bit more then from above. When you bought a stand-alone item, you
paid a one off charge for the software and expect to get some updates in the
life of that product, before the launch of a new version. In a subscription
only product, you sign up and you know the costs for a limited period, but
have no guarantee of long term costs or what it may later give (or not give)
you.

I'm also aware, to give this some balance, that I'm of an age where I expect
to know what I'm getting and have some control of costs and storage. I
imagine that people in their early 20s may have a very different take on
this and feel my approach to software use and storage is old fashioned. I
simply don't possess the blind faith that a younger generation often does in
modern technology. I consider myself to be in the 'told you so' generation'!

Well then, that's quite amazing. With the 55-300 I find about 300m is the
limit for large animals & 100m for large birds but much less if you want
detail. Perhaps none of those 150-450's will land in my lap!

Yes - for native raw files, but you can run those files through the DNG
converter and they should load in fine in LR 4.

For example, my LR 5.7 wont load the native .orf files from my Olympus

i remember the flap, but the facts were different; there was location data

as for the GPS data in photos — Apple (and Android, i assume) cameras have
an option to turn off the camera's access to location info; that's easier
than remembering to strip them later, and a good protective step when giving

DNG Converter is a free, stand alone application and version 9.1 has
just been released. The most recent versions wont run with older OS.
For Windows you need Windows 7 or later - not sure about Mac.

PESO - The Mount

2015-06-17 Thread frank theriault
This is not the best shot the day (I think that goes to Tailwhip,
posted yesterday), but it's sort of a follow-up to Monday's Mike on
the Rail:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/06/the-mount.html

I was trying to explain to Jack why the stunt is hard, and maybe
seeing how he has to mount does visually what I couldn't textually.

As you can see the left peg of the rear wheel will be on the rail. To
get the right peg on the rail Mike has to bring the front wheel way
above the rail and land it "just right" so that right peg slides up
the rail.

The end result is the rider sliding up the rail on his axle pegs, not
using the pegs on the same side as usual, but on either side of his
bike:

http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2015/06/mike-on-rail.html

There's a name for this stunt but Mike hasn't answered my email request yet.

Hope you enjoy (the picture, if not the prolix post). Comments always welcome.

Cheers,

frank

As Godfrey suggested, there is always ebay.

Or try KEH. I have not used them but a couple days ago I ran the gear
that I would like to sell through their quote system. It's less money
than I would hope to get from ebay but far less work, and I consolidate
shipping and save there. I will probably send my stuff off to them in July.

So the bike never "hits" the rail, just those big "pegs" sticking out

As many of you know, I'm quite the fan of craft beer. And by very good
fortune there's an excellent wine and craft beer shop almost at the
end of my street, Streetcar Wine & Beer. Since they regularly feature
the work of local artists in their store it was probably only a matter
of time until I ended up showing some work there. And that time is
now. I have a few framed prints on show there during the month of
June.

If you can't make it down to the shop you can see the images featured

I've sold to KEH as a last resort, when all other methods fail. They haven't
paid much for the stuff I've sold, but it was better than throwing the stuff
away.

Dave, if you do list on Craigs list etc and need to meet face to face, what
I've done is meet in a very public place, like a gas station or fast food
place and I have a cell phone at my ready just in case.

As Godfrey suggested, there is always ebay.

Or try KEH. I have not used them but a couple days ago I ran the gear that
I would like to sell through their quote system. It's less money than I
would hope to get from ebay but far less work, and I consolidate shipping
and save there. I will probably send my stuff off to them in July.

trying to sell on local buy and sells, family suggested Kijiji but i
have a hard time accepting local people i dont know coming to my house

I contacted the local high school's photography teacher today via his
email and he thanked me for my offer, but, he also has a bunch of
older Nikon gear that they don't use and don't want or need any more.

So, I'll try one more time on the local networks but if that does not
work, now what. I 'd hate to just take the to the electronic scrap
recycle place. One camera was $7K new, now i can't even sell it for
$60.

After discussing with a friend how tough photographing bright orange can

Used to have similar issues with reds also in the film days, but now in
digital capture, monitoring the histogram has made that pretty much a
nonissue.

After discussing with a friend how tough photographing bright orange can
be, I ran into this amusing challenge in my front yard this afternoon.
Just to make it a bit more fun, there's a poppy in the background in full
sunlight:

Thank goodness for K-5 dynamic range and the lightroom adjustment brush.

There's a name for this stunt but Mike hasn't answered my email request
yet.

Hope you enjoy (the picture, if not the prolix post). Comments always
welcome.

Cheers,

frank

Re: New Lightroom/Photoshop Features

2015-06-17 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Godfrey,

I appreciate the technical insights you provide every so often on the
issues discussed.

Sorry, I couldn't help but parody your previous response here.
My parody was not in contradiction, but just in projecting the customer's
perspective. And it wasn't a reflection on you, but rather on the

recent trend in the consumer services' industry in general, and
Adobe in particular.

1. Your response reminded me of the response I've heard recently
*N* too many times from some corporate customer services. They admit that
their system (product, etc.) is not working properly, but then say they
wouldn't not be able to do the things right, giving me details of their
idiosyncratic system (e.g. they are unable to communicate with
another department of theirs, or "their computer doesn't allow them doing"
what's right). I usually tell them that my pen's design prevents it from
writing that company's name on a check, and that I hope they'd agree it is
a good reason for not paying for their services.

2. In addition, I am rather tired of Adobe's own and fun-boy-advocates
such as Scott Kelby arrogantly ASSuming that LR users must be upgrading
their computers every 2 years.

3. Finally, - during the week that followed the release of LR-6.0, I spoke
with the customer support of Adobe, and they assured me that the
stand-alone version of the installation (suitable for a free trial) will
be made available again soon, after they'd fix some errors in it. And that
has never happened.

Again, sorry, Godfrey, the main aim of my response was Adobe.

No need to be snarky: I didn't say otherwise. I haven't used PS much in
recent years either, which is why I have a perpetual license for LR and
continue to use an old version of PS.
