2000 That hurts!
The most amazing part: a battery charger is not included. Charging
from USB C only.
Not to mention the fixed LCD screen.

2021-03-31 Thread Henk Terhell

Also 2000 euro here at Kamera-Express.
I would never buy this camera because of the fixed screen.
For me this is a turning point as a long time Pentax user.
As Ricoh is looking for a partner with Pentax, I'll search for my
crystal ball.
I like an APS-C camera besides FF because of the longer reach and easier
carrying than my K-1.
Options are: 1) get a KP before it is sold out, 2) wait on future
Pentax models that surely have a tilt screen, 3) look outside the Pentax
box or 4) forget about APS-C.

SO I just spent a bit of time this morning finding the locations in the
article.  all but two of them... I suspect Freeman didn't just happen on
some these particular places.

google ye selves and you'll see what I mean...

The Mohawk Theatre  -  North Adams, Massachusetts
McManus Pharmacy -  Nyack, New York  (Edward Hopper's birthplace and
boyhood home )

The Barber Shop and Supply at 140 Main - Nyack, New York
Ramsey Movie Theatre is in Ramsey, New Jersey (even has a web page!)
Sam's Too Shoe Center is in Brattleboro, Vermont (locally famous and loved)

Mt Carmel Trust and Savings, -  Mt. Carmel Illinois
Mom's Cafe  is in Salina, Utah (googled Mom's cafe on state street and
got there in a flash)

If anyone can read more signage that I could in the one with the Vintage
sign on the thrift store or the writing on the post office "S
Mountain" I bet I

can locate those as well.

Methinks Pentax have taken leave of their senses.

My K3 has cost 1300 euros new IIRC. It's still doing fine, I'm quite
happy with it, and it will hopefully last a few more years. I don't
think I'd be ready to shell out 2000 euros to replace it, if and when
that should ever become necessary.

I reckon I'd rather go for a second-hand K3 II.

Some people do this deliberately to try to keep copycats from over
running the areas where they like to photograph.

I don't know if anyone here remembers the picture that I put into the
PDML Chicago gallery show from a few years back, it was the one of the
abandoned school shot through the old swing set.

Apparently a couple of years after I took that picture, some Model
Mayhem photographer took a girl out there, did a photo session using the
swing set as the major prop, and after he was done he took a chain saw
to the structure to ensure no one would be able to copy his magnificent
work.

I read a story out of Utah a few years ago where some numb nut got a
nice image of something or other in one of the parks, IIRC, there was a
fully in bloom cactus in the forground, and after he was done he kicked
the plant to death, again to ensure none else would be able to get the
same picture he got.

Obviously, or at least hopefully, no one is going to take a wrecking
ball to an old building just to ensure none else gets to photograph it,
but this is the mindset that many people have.

Rereading the photographers comments in the BBC article I see that he
deliberately left off locations "Freeman prefers not to disclose the
location of each shot so that the photographs portray a "generic" vision
and representation of small-town America."  I think that is bull hockey,
personally.  I'm guessing he didn't take careful notes..

and I also think he got pointed to some of the places...

I kinda remember your story about that model shoot.. but it is a bit
different   these days.. because of the web everyone has been everywhere...

...  I looked at his web page and all his galleries.. prefer his
daylight shots but don't think of them as anything special, frankly.

Mayhem photographer took a girl out there, did a photo session using
the swing set as the major prop, and after he was done he took a chain
saw to the structure to ensure no one would be able to copy his
magnificent work.

I read a story out of Utah a few years ago where some numb nut got a
nice image of something or other in one of the parks, IIRC, there was
a fully in bloom cactus in the forground, and after he was done he
kicked the plant to death, again to ensure none else would be able to
get the same picture he got.

Obviously, or at least hopefully, no one is going to take a wrecking
ball to an old building just to ensure none else gets to photograph
it, but this is the mindset that many people have.

Maybe the sensor is something special, no idea, seeing is believing. I
never felt they should be losing money. My feelings: Paying double
(compared to the KP) for a partial upgrade and a partial downgrade
feels strange.
Everytime they claim improved AF, in practice it feels identical
(mediocre). Improved frame rate, buffer, build quality, 4K video
doesn't make me run to the store. Video on Pentax DSLR is an absolute
nightmare compared to the competition.
If the viewfinder and sensor is really special maybe I would bite, but

Aftermarket chargers aren’t terribly expensive, but I already have several. I
often depend on being able to charge multiple extra batteries when I’m not
shooting with them.

I find the the articulated screen of the K-1 extremely handy, but make do
without it on my K-3s.

I am somewhat hopeful that all of the performance improvements won’t take
nearly as long to implement on the K-1 iii as they did on the K-3 iii. I’m
also quite certain that they don’t even want to mention the existence of a
future K-1 iii until sales of the K-3 iii have tapered off.

Indeed, I have two of them, the older trusted one that came with the K1 I
think, and the new one that uses an USB-charger unit. The charger part can be
connected to camera directly as well, to charge the battery inside. No problem.

The USB charger should be usable for my safari-trip as well, where only USB
power is available from the CAR batteries ;-)

I pre-ordered a black K3 III, to be used as the main camera on a safari-trip to
Botswana, with the 150450 attached for wildlife, and also
take the K1 with me as a backup, and to use the 24-70 en 15-30mm on, for
landscapes.

Glad they both take the same DLI-90 battery

My tentative plan is to sell one of my two K-1ii bodies and to buy the K-3iii
or some other APS-C body in a month or two.

If anyone wants to buy a used K-1ii, let me know. I will include a charger and
at least one battery. And an articulating screen.

People keep mentioning the KP as an alternative to the new K-3iii. I never paid
attention to the KP. What are the merits of the K-3ii vs. KP? One option I have
considered is buying a used K-3ii in liu of the new release, but would the KP
be a better alternative? Why?

GESO: Looking back at Galapagos 2018

2021-03-31 Thread Stanley Halpin
When traveling one of the ways I have tried to share my experiences has been to
post a few images every day or two on Facebook. Because it is easy to do.
I also have a travel blog, but that is harder to manage when operating in
low-bandwidth conditions.

So I have quick selections with minimal editing which go to Facebook. Some
random time later Facebook tells me I should check out my Memories from
such-and-such a time period and there is a Share button.

I got such a Memories reminder the other day, I did do the Share thing, and a
few of my Galapagos images went back into Facebook circulation. I decided I
won’t do that again. Because those were a quick select, minimal editing batch
of photos. So instead I went back into my Galapagos images, selected a few
favorites (yes, there was overlap with the set I had posted 3 years ago), di
some slight editing, and posted those instead of the recycled Memories.

So now I have a Collection in Lightroom of those images from my revisit to
Galapagos images. So I clicked the icon to Sync that collection. Et voila for
your viewing pleasure, without any need to put up with Facebook, Galapagos
2018. Including a Galapagos Flightless Cormorant…

misery..  didn't mind sleeping more hours than not but the fever and
chills overnight wasn't much fun and
the arm soreness was much worse than first one -- maybe my arm was not
quite as limp as it should have been.. but all fine now.

anticipate some more reports coming in here from far and wide -
certainly got a lot on FB

It is a great relief.. so in two weeks I can get my regular check-up
without much worry travelling farther afield than walking distance

Re: DP initial review of K-3 III

2021-03-31 Thread Larry Colen
Having no first hand knowledge here is my assessment.

Just due to the sensor being several Moore’s cycles newer than that K-3 or K-1,
its raw performance will exceed even that of the K-1. However, since the days
of the K-5 sensor performance has been to the point that in anything but the
most ludicrous lighting, the difference in performance will be much more of a
bragging point than any visible or practical difference for the vast majority
of photos.
The current K-1 will still have an edge on some ultra wide and fast lenses,
being able to use more of their angle of view. It will also have an edge in
using some film era lenses that just seem to subjectively work better at their
designed angle of view.
There are certain features that the K-3 iii is missing, that I expect will be
available on the K-1 iii, both for space and to differentiate it from the
K-3iii, since there is a very small percentage of crazies that actually push
their cameras to their sensor performance limits.

I am very interested in seeing what the placement of the 101 focusing points
is. I frequently find myself wanting to focus on something that is outside the
area covered by focusing points. My expectation is that there will be a
tremendous improvement in both focusing speed and accuracy, but I can guarantee
you that there will be a lot of people for whom this is not sufficient, and it
wouldn’t be good enough even if it psychicly knew what to focus on and did so
perfectly even before you knew what you wanted it to focus on.

There will be as many people complaining that it isn’t mirrorless as there are
who appreciate the new pentaprism, and will use this as evidence of the
imminent demise of Ricoh/Pentax. Lather, rinse repeat for every new feature.

I suspect that at least part of the high ISO performance will be post
processing rather than raw hardware performance, and this will be an issue for
at least a significant percentage of photographers. It will be interesting to
see how configurable that will be.

I predict that a lot of the reviews of the K-3 iii will comment on it’s stellar
performance, and what a joy it is to use, and these glowing reviews will have
little effect on the final sales numbers.

Very cool. I did note that it said Valentine Tx on old Route 66. Having taken
66 (get all sporty on interstate forty) at least as far as Amarillo on my way
to my sister’s place in North TX, I looked up Valentine TX and it seems to be
on hwy 90, which is at the far South West end of TX a bit south of I-10.

LArry Thanks for that... I had thought we were on the side road off of
I-40 when I took that.. which was 66.. but we did take I-10 and the
southern route at one point.. .  I know Valentine was right though
because I had it in my notes that I wrote at the time... unless your
source was mistaken or 90 used to be 66.

This is one thing I want to be correct about!

Second jab is rough. The soreness is not from arm tension, it’s from your
still-energetic immune system mobilizing. That’s good!

I had the same symptoms without the fever after jab 2. They’re very common,
particularly in younger folks than you.

It seems to address every criticism of the K3II except for a lack of a
tilt screen, so of course everyone is going to dump on it.

As I'm not currently the target market, more or less perfectly happy
with my current kit, all I see is a much improved APS-c, DSLR, and as I
like DSLRs more than mirrorless cameras, I'm glad they made it.  I hope
they sell a ton of them.

Good to hear you've gotten through it!

I've had both shots (Moderna) and got lucky, I guess ... No reactions at all,
other than the usual 'sore shoulder' I always get with any injection. The
second shot with either Pfizer or Moderna has show a huge number of different
levels of reactions, it seems. Happily, few that seem terribly bad. The risk
from the vaccination is far lower than the risks of the virus, no matter what.

I stay careful, but feel secure that I can continue my usual regimen and be a
little less concerned about the possibilities.

Onwards!
