Man, I must have had beginners luck with that. I went in and tried again
with the method I used the first time and got about a dozen failures in
a row.

So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that
Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.

Generative fill is something akin to playing the slots, you can get a
lot of losers to have a winner.

Re: OT Photoshop 2024 help

2024-02-05 Thread Bill
I opened the image in Photoshop, drew quite loosely around the tripod
head with the lasso tool, then edit/generative fill and clicked fill
with nothing in the dialogue box.

If you do too tight a selection Photoshop will screw it up, it needs
surrounding detail to create the fill so you need to give it plenty of
elbow room. The selection I gave it was about the same size as the globe.

My understanding is that generative fill in it's present form creates
everything at a maximum resolution of 1024x1024. The people who know
more than me seem to be using fixed size boxes at that size and then
doing multiple passes with generative fill with higher resolution images.

One of the things you might have received with your subscription is
access to Photoshop Beta which is the test bed for Photoshop, so new
features appear there and as they are perfected they then trickle into
Photoshop 24 as updates.

For example, the image I posted was done on Photoshop Beta version 25.0.0

Photoshop woes

2021-12-27 Thread John Sessoms
I was inspired to see if I could find anything in my photography to
submit for the PDML PUG for January.

I found something but it's not great, but there was something that might
have potential if I could combine two photos - taken about an hour apart
at sunset on a stormy day.

But they're also taken from about 10' apart and for some reason they're
slightly different focal length (like 150mm & 175mm - I think I was
using my 80-200 zoom) and the parallax is just enough Photoshop can't to
an automatic merge.

So I'm doing it manually loading the two DNG files into Photoshop layers

... and it looks like shit.

I hope I can come up with a plan 'B', because I want to get out of my
current rut.

Help you did. In the file saving options, there is a check box for "save
in background" that was checked.
I unchecked that, and life is back to normal.

Re: Dumb Photoshop Question

2021-09-10 Thread David Mann
That seems a bit strange. I've been processing some photos today and the only
times it's added anything to the filename is if I've reopened a raw file
through Bridge that I've already processed and saved previously. For the
record, my workflow is to use Bridge to organise / select my raw files then
edit in Adobe Camera Raw, finally opening in Photoshop to convert the profile
and save. I found Photoshop produced better jpg files than ACR for some reason.

I think this is a recently-added feature as today is the first time I've
noticed this behaviour. I only discovered it when it didn't ask me to replace
the existing file when I saved the newer version - instead it saved a filename
with "-2" appended.

I've just tried opening a couple of jpg and psd files and this behaviour didn't
occur. FWIW I'm using an iMac.

Sorry for not being helpful :)

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Cool Photoshop feature

2021-03-17 Thread P. J. Alling
I used to use a technique of stepped up resolution in smallish
increments of 10% per iteration using bi-cubic sharpening on good well
exposed *ist-D images.  Then place a layer containing an actual scan of
film grain on top to add some false detail.  With the right subject, and
a good well exposed image, and not pushing it too far, maybe going to
something between 9mp and 12mp, they didn't look too bad printed fairly
large.  I even created a couple of Photoshop actions to do most of the
grunt work.

Cool Photoshop feature

2021-03-15 Thread Bill

This was just released a few days ago, so should be on your next update.
Camera raw now has a feature called "enhance", which uses artificial
intelligence to increase the resolution of files.
I just tried it on a couple of old *istD files, and it seems to work
very well indeed, it turned my 6mp file into a 24mp one with no
upscaling artifacts that I could see.

It might be something to consider for people who shoot BIFs.

Re: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Hey, John; glad to hear you are making progress.

The GPU is used for a whole bunch of large and small things.
Particularly for me the GPU is used to render the brush tool cursor
when I choose Full Size Brush Tip and Show Crosshair in Brush Tip. I
use this for more accurate dodging and burning (skin retouching).
It's also used for smooth scrolling around the image when magnified.

If GPU disabled is no different for you from enabling GPU options then
I expect that your graphics card isn't well supported and you'd be
better off just disabling it. Your unusual VGA hookup could be
affecting this. GPUs may need a reasonably modern monitor with a
direct HDMI or USB-3 (USB-C) connection for proper functioning.

Cheers!

RE: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Finished testing the GPU options. Went through each with sample files of
the same size (9 MB), using no GPU acceleration and then Basic, Normal and
Advanced settings, and had no problems with the Basic and Normal settings:
however, on switching to Advanced, the problem recurred. I found it
interesting that turning GPU acceleration off did not appear to greatly
effect the normal speed of redrawing the image after changes such as
cropping and resizing. So I wonder whether there is any advantage to using
it of which I am not aware? Just to add a complication, I am displaying my
work on an external monitor linked via the VGA socket through a VGA to HDMI
converter to an HDMI input!

Thanks again, Bruce.

Since changing the app is easier than Windows, have you tried downgrading to
an earlier version of Photoshop?
Try adding more scratch space. You can configure multiple drives to supply

Try playing with the GPU acceleration options. I'd first try disabling it

BTW, it's working fine for me on a 5K iMac. Ps version 21.0.3.

RE: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Hi Bruce - thanks for the suggestions: I'm using just over 9GB of scratch
space on a separate drive, which is in the mid-range of what PS is
recommending. I'm going to switch through the GPU options to see what
effect each has, starting with it disabled.

Last few days PSCC has become unusable. I am currently working on a number
of old family photos, which I have scanned to TIFF files, usually at
anything from 400-1200 ppi, depending upon the original size of the print
(always from prints).
I can crop, spot fix, clone areas, adjust highlights/shadows etc. with no
problems, but even a minor resize causes the whole application to freeze.
Anyone else having this problem? I am using an HP Pavilion laptop with a
decent specification, and have over 107GB available on my scratch disk, and
over 800Gb available on the source disk, so I don't think capacity is the
issue. Processor is a Core-i7 at 1.80 GHz, 16GB RAM and 64-bit W10 fully
updated.
A little research suggests perhaps it is not PS but Windows causing the
issue, but I don't want to roll back the last windows update unnecessarily.

OT: A photoshop batch task?

2018-06-14 Thread collinb
I've a base template PSD file with 3 layers. File has been duplicated to the
desired target files n advance.
#1 is the background
#2 is text
#3 is text.
I'd like to read info from a text file and loop through created PSD files
and change the layer 2 and layer 3 text to what I read sequentially from the
text file.
Anyone ever do that?

People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-16 Thread Bipin Gupta
I've been using Photoshop for donkey years, but stopped with the CS6
version for a couple of reasons:
a) Photography is my hobby and I am not into it for money. Also I have
this idiosyncrasy to own the very best of things like shoes- Bata,
Cameras - Pentax, Watch - Rolex & Omega, Cars - Infinity, Travel
Luggage - Samsonite & so on.
But I changed to a 4K Intel Core i7 laptop, and the fonts + modules
appeared miniscule and I could not read them. Adobe & Microsoft were
at loggerheads blaming each other so the problem remains unsolved.
RIP Photoshop CS6.
b) $ 10 a month may appear small, but I would rather own my own
software which resides on my own machine, not somewhere in the cloud.
Reason why I have not moved into a Gated Community where you pay a
monthly service + maintenance charge and listen to all the Rules they
make.
I rather have my own little house at the meeting point of 4-Roads -
what is called a unique corner site.
c) I have used a number of Software - Pentax's own PDCU5, Cyberlink
Photo Director, DxO Optics Pro, Lightroom + some more, but find LR CC
2015.12 with the NIK interface the friendliest, easiest & fast.
d) I am aware that Photoshop is the Studio Owner's and Pro Photogs
favorite, so they will have to go on using it in whatever way Adobe
hands it out to them - whether they have a choice or not.
Not for me, as I will move on to something else like Luminar, GIMP etc.

Thanks for reading.

Re: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-16 Thread Brian Walters
Well, I'll add my 2 cents...

I used the CC Photographer's Plan when it first appeared and kept at it for
about 18 months. Prior to that I was using CS3. However, I found that I just
wasn't making use of CC's additional features over CS3 (other than occasional
use of the dehaze filter), so I cancelled the subscription and went back to CS3.
CS3 handles raw DNGs from my K5 and, with the Metaraw plugin I can even open
raws from my Olympus OMDs.

It’s good for professionals that use photoshop. It’s less good for folks who
just use Lightroom. I don’t know of a single feature in Lightroom CC I need
that isn’t in LR6. For that matter, there are serious issues with the cool new

the added cost of losing the ability to edit photos if I stop upgrading. Yes,

Re: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-16 Thread Doug Brewer
I use it. I don't use it as much as I use Lightroom, but I do sometimes
slide it open if I determine I need something it offers that LR doesn't,
and it works. The newest version is pretty snappy, even on my relatively
old MBP, although I have to say I seldom work with excessively large files.

Editing photos rises to the level of meditative state for me, during
which I immerse myself in the process and shut out the dark noise of the
world for a while, and for that state I find it difficult to get too
torqued up about ten bucks a month. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

There are a number of Photoshop competitors that appear to have almost
the same features for less money or are available for outright
purchase.   Unless there is something you /need/ that only the latest
version of Photoshop has, which seems unlikely for a Photographer,
there's no need to upgrade.

The current business model that Adobe is following is good for most
professionals, it's also very, very good for Adobe who seem to be
minting money at the moment.  It's not so good for the average
photographer, who needs to upgrade occasionally as hardware improves and
those improvements are happening with much less frequency.

Re: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-15 Thread Zos Xavius
Frankly its obvious that new development is only going to be on CC
from this point forward. Lightroom 6 was constantly behind the CC
version too, so that should say a lot about how much they care about
it. Adobe wanted to pull this move to subscription all along. It makes
sense if you regularly buy new versions of lightroom anyways. Frankly
I pirated versions 2-5, but now that they have the CC versions I can
just use my work copy legitimately. That said, if I had to pay the $10
a month I would gladly. I get way more than $10 a month of usefulness
out of both products. People love to praise capture one, but it is
basically twice as expensive and doesn't even have photoshop which I
feel is a necessity anyways. Frankly I still like lightroom. It
finally is playing nice again on my computer so I don't hate it like I
did a year ago. Of course upgrading to the PC equivalent of a Macbook
Pro didn't hurt either. Once you get your catalog file and previews on
an SSD and get your ram in the 16-32gb range it will run pretty well
even on an older computer with a fairly slow GPU. The ram and SSD are
the big things. An sandybridge or newer i5 or i7 doesn't hurt either.
It ran perfectly fine on my older crap Acer i5@2.5ghz when I stuck
16gb of ram in the machine. On 8gb it was pretty painful, especially
when the OS was running off of a slow HD drive. I also have a 200k
image catalog in lightroom. When I make a new catalog for small
projects with just a few thousand images it is really fast. So unless
your catalog isn't really huge, you can probably get away with even
less of a machine. The big thing was just getting enough ram so you
aren't swapping. LR alone can eat up 4-5GB of RAM pretty easily. If
you stitch panoramas I've seen it use up to 20GB or so pretty easily.
So its not really efficient in terms of ram usage for panorama
creation. It does make a fully RAW panorama though which is really,
really cool if you think about it.

CC has come quite a ways since version 5. Just being able to do
panoramas and hdr in lightroom alone is pretty huge. For $10 a month
with photoshop its really not a bad deal at all considering what you
get. Photoshop CC is pretty nice too. The new CC Classic has a lot of
performance improvements and I can say it definitely feels a bit
snappier than the older version. Dehaze comes in pretty handy too,
especially if you landscape. With a light touch it does actually work
pretty well.

RE: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-15 Thread John Coyle
I've had the CC version since it was launched, and have had absolutely no
issues with it. I moved
up to it from PS Elements, and before then had CS3, so there was a significant
improvement in
functionality. The advantage of having new features and improvements available
immediately at no
additional cost is a definite plus.
I must say I don't consider the cost to be rapacious - for me, with just PS and
Bridge, it's only
A$13 a month! I neither like nor want Lightroom, but I could add that again
with no increase in the
cost, I believe.

I'm looking for reviews from people I know, because Brett wants to upgrade and

Would anyone like to share their thoughts on how it works, rather than just

Re: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-15 Thread DagT
I use PS CC (now 2018).

It works OK, and especially after I got the K-1 and the kamera and lens
profiles were updated pretty fast. Too often a camera upgrade earlier meant an
updated PS too, so if you change cameras (too) often the price of the CC is not
that much.

On the other hand I´m not an advanced PS user, so I can´t answer any
complicated questions :-)

On Oct 12, 2011 when the photo was allegedly taken,
in the Masai Mara where the dastardly deed was done,
in the early morning as implied by the title of the image:

1. The moon was full at 0505 that morning.
2. The moon set at 0620 on a bearing of 281.4° as seen from the casual
observers position on Saltlick road. I.e., basically a bit North of West.
3. The sun rose at 0623 that morning, as you might expect, on a bearing of

I feel some of your pain; I'm running CS5 so I can't upgrade my OS until I

the upgrade (CS6 Extended, because there was no CS6 Standard available).

Oh and I forgot that adobe now has k-1 and k-3 ii profiles built in as
well. So you aren't stuck with just adobe standard or embedded
anymore. You can pick natural, portrait, etc. I rarely use anything
other than reversal film (which sadly isn't supported) so the profiles
are pretty useless to me. The portrait and natural ones aren't bad
though.

Yes you can just convert pef to dng with the dng converter. Or you can
shoot DNG and just open the raw. Do note that the K-1 has a bunch of
advanced features that the older camera raw does not support like
multiple area white balance. In the latest lightroom, it works with
the K-3 or at least it doesn't shift to green anymore. Lightroom also
has the latest adobe profile for the K-1 where the older camera raw
you are stuck with just embedded. I use embedded usually myself, so
maybe that's not a big deal. Skin tones can be better sometimes under
adobe's profile though.

The K1 PEF is not supported. Adobe ended support for CS6 Camera Raw with
the July 29 2015 release of ACR 9.1.1.
Users of the K1 either need to shoot DNG or use the Adobe DNG converter
on your PEFs and end up with a DNG file anyway.

I started shooting DNG with the K10 because Adobe was slow to update ACR
and have continued to shoot that format. I see no reason to not shoot
DNG files if you are using Adobe products.

Re: K-1 and Photoshop CS6

2016-11-18 Thread P.J. Alling
The only reason to use PEF format is if you're shooting a *ist-D since
it doesn't support DNG or you need to save space, as early
implementations on Pentax cameras produced DNGs 130% to 200% the size of
a PEF file. That hasn't been an issue for quite some time.

Re: K-1 and Photoshop CS6

2016-11-18 Thread John

According to Adobe's web site:

K-1 DNG & PEF are supported by Adobe Camera Raw 9.5.1 or later.

ACR for Photoshop CS6 will not be updated beyond 9.1.1.

I'm still using Photoshop CS6 Extended with the default Camera Raw
plugin (7.0) and have had no problems with Pentax K-1 DNG files.

I switched to DNG with the K20D and have used them for the K-3 & K-1, as
well as going back and setting the K10D to DNG.

If you don't want to use DNG as your raw format, the latest stand alone
DNG converter might work for you.

Re: Photoshop CS6 dilemna

2016-04-16 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Paul,

Both Apple and Adobe have been tightening the security of late. Doing an
install from the Time Machine backup sometimes works but sometimes doesn't.
It's a permissions problem. I had a problem trying to install Lightroom 6
(perpetual) too. This is what I did to solve it:

1- Go to Adobe and download a copy of the current perpetual license installer
for PS CS6. You should be able to find this at
https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html.

2- Boot your system on an account that includes administrator privileges. (I
always maintain an administrator account separate from my user account. If your
'user' account you has administrator privileges, skip to step 8.)

3- Using System Preferences, choose the accounts tool.

4- Authenticate using the lock icon.

5- Select your user account.

6- Click "Allow user to administer this computer" so that it is checked.

7- Restart the system and login with that account.

8- Have your Adobe Photoshop CS6 user code handy.

9- Run the Photoshop CS6 Installer and let it install Photoshop.

10- Start PSCS6, follow the steps, and enter your user code to verify the
license.

11- If you had to set your account to "allow user to administer this computer",
reverse that with System Preferences and restart.

At Step 9, you might not be allowed to run Photoshop with a notice that you've
exhausted your license installation limits. That means that you should have
deactivated Photoshop before needing to wipe the drive and reinstall. The only
way to solve that is to start a chat with Adobe support and have them reset
your activation properly.

Good luck!

G
